Time to Feast!
Taste of Rockaway is Saturday!
By Katie McFadden

Its back and bigger than

ever, so bring your appetite!
Taste of Rockaway Beach is
Saturday, May 7.
Taste of Rockaway Beach, a
now highly anticipated biannual event, is a foodies dream.
Saturday will be the sixth Taste
since it started in December
2013 and it will be the largest
yet. From noon to 6 p.m. participants will have the opportunity to try food samples from
18 different local businesses.
For those whove never experienced the Taste, it is a
chance to try something from
local restaurants that you
may not have been to before
or sample something from
local favorites, and it is an
outstanding bargain for all.
For just $10, anyone can join
in the fun by buying a pass at
any of the participating es-

tablishments by May 6. This

years bars and eateries include Thai Rock, Bungalow
Bar, Sayras Wine Bar, A + A
Chinese Cuisine, Elegante,
The Rock wine bar, Umas,
Rockaway Roasters, Uncle
Louie Gs, Surfside Bagels,
Whits End, Playland, 101
Deli, Rockaway Beach Golf
Club, Community House,
Ship to Shore Wine Shop,
Pico and Smoothie Haven.
According to Robert Kaskel,
event organizer and owner of
Thai Rock, this springs Taste
will feature some new aspects. The Rockaway Beach
Golf Club finally opened its
doors in late April, so those
who havent been yet will
get a chance to see the indoor club that features simulated golf and try some bar
snacks. The brand new Ship
to Shore Wine Shop (8808 Beach Channel Drive),

owned by the owners of Sayras Wine Bar, is expected to

make its debut during the
event. The Rockaway Union,
which hosts the event, is also
branching out and has invited some establishments out-

join in. Mexican restaurant,
Pico, in Belle Harbor, and
new smoothie shop, Smoothie Haven, in Arverne, will also
be part of the route, but you
wont have to go out of your
way to get to them. Smoothie Haven opened a storefront
last year at 7416 Beach Channel Drive, but with the ability to go mobile, participants
will be able to taste some of
their smoothies along the
route as they will likely be
located between Thai Rock
and Bungalow Bar. Although
Pico is located at 219 Beach
129th Street, you can also get
a taste of their food at another Rockaway Beach business. The gym, CROM Physical Culture (217 Beach 98th
Street) will be hosting a Pico
pop-up restaurant, which will

Owed More Than A Day

My father died when I was
eleven years old. It happened in
October. Eight months earlier in
February, twins, a brother and
a sister, died soon after birth.
Some time in between February and October the family dog
died, too. Some year, huh?
It was my father dying that
was far and away the most traumatic, life-changing event of my

life. Divorce was uncommon in

those days; a dying parent even
more uncommon. As a kid, you
felt incredibly different than
other kids.
Of course, you felt the loss of
the guy who took you to Yankee
games and let other kids on the
block jump in the station wagon
for a trip to the beach or Valley
Stream State Park. But you also

felt stigmatized. Back then, you

were the only kid you knew who
didnt have a father. Somebody
making simple conversation
about your dads occupation,
Whats your father do? would
make you physically unable to
speak. Youd change the subject, act like you didnt hear,
or walk away hoping someone
nearby would fill the person in,
that your father was dead.
All of the heartache is still as
much a part of me as my hands
and legs. But only with years
comes a perspective that is not
so self-centered.
When my father died the world
came apart but it seemed like it
was coming apart for everyone
else as well. The war in Vietnam was in full swing; crime in
New York City was quadrupling.
Murders topped 2,000 a year.
Neighborhoods were burning
down. Son of Sam. Blackouts.
Gas shortages. Drunk driving
was a regular thing.
I say it all the time. People my
age? The only reason were here
is because of luck. But a big
chunk of my luck was having a
mother steer us through those
catastrophic times.
My fathers death was so painful I couldnt see, let alone, appreciate the job my mother had
before her.
I mentioned twins dying.
Those were my mothers babies.
They died in February, Sharon
and Neil. The pain that mustve
meant for my mother mustve
been extreme but she had little
time to grieve. More was waiting for her. Just a few weeks later
my father went in for an operation for what they thought was
an ulcer.
The doctor came out of the operating room and said, Hes got
two weeks to two months. No
bedside manner just a broadside. It wasnt an ulcer, it was
stomach cancer.
So the twins had just died,
and now her husband was dying. Did I mention there were
six other kids at home? The oldest was just a sophomore in high
school.
And the single mother with six
kids had nothing in the bank.
Social security checks and a part
time secretarial job would have
to do.
We make jokes now. But at
the time it wasnt all that funny

Page 5
going to public health places
where we were guinea pigs for
dentists in training. We got fivepound chunks of US Government issued cheese given out of
the backs of trucks. We couldnt
go on class trips sometimes because we just didnt have the
money. It didnt really sink in
with the kids. We were pretty
poor but didnt realize it. My
mother never told us. The most
shed say is, we cant afford it.
We were not the easiest brood
to manage. We were her children but we were also children
of those crazy times. We were
five boys and one girl and no
one ever accused of us being a
choir. Oh, and the family grew
dont ask why or how she
allowed us to get a Great Dane.
Who turned out to be, by far, the
best behaved of the group.
There was no how-to manual
and theres no diary to hint at
how she managed. I know she
went to church every day so that
mustve helped. And we went to
school every day. More or less.
So that mustve helped.
But I still shake my head.
When things fell apart she was
a single mother with six kids
and a Great Dane. And now?
Well, she still goes to church
and her grandchildren have
graduated from or are going to
great colleges including Harvard.
Shes still what draws us all
together. And what shes meant
hasnt been lost on her grandchildren who are already talking about buying a big house
somewhere so the wide, extended family can continue to come
together.
The Great Dane has long since
gone but those six kids never
confused with a choir sing her
praises now. Although a newspaper column cant cover a
family history if we jump to the
chapter named May 2016 youll
know we look in awe upon my
mother, Helen, on this Mothers
Day.
And Ma, I think I can speak for
us all: We love you.

May Boardwalk Update

The Parks Department released
its boardwalk update for the
month of May. Although it looks
like more progress is being made
in Phase 3 from Beach 106th to
Beach 126th, Parks still says this
portion of the boardwalk wont be
complete until sometime in July.
Phase 1 and 2, from Beach 86th
to Beach 106th Street, have been
open since last summer, but small
crews may still be seen in this
area as they complete punchlist items. Earlier this year, Phase
4, from Beach 60th to Beach 86th
Street opened, but some work still
needs to be done. You will continue to see small work crews period-

ically in Phase 4 while the contractor completes punch-list items.

Beachside access structures are
substantially complete. Landside
access structure RPL decking and
railing installation continues this
month from Beach 60th to Beach
73rd street. In this phase, all landside access points are open except
at Beach 61st, 62nd, 65th and 74th
until late spring.
Parks says Phase 5A, from Beach
39th to Beach 60th Street will be
open by Memorial Day of this year.
This month, boardwalk railing,
furniture and light installation,
along with landside access structure construction, including RPL

decking and railing, will continue

until complete.
Phase 3 was originally supposed
to open by Memorial Day as well,
but Parks announced last month
that the opening will be pushed
back to sometime in July due to
delays caused by new crane safety rules which restrict crane operation during high wind. So far,
Parks says new water main work,
pile driving, as well as sand retaining wall, pre-cast pile cap installation, sand fill, utility installation,
and land side access structure

cap installation are substantially

complete in Phase 3. Boardwalk
precast plank setting and railing installation have begun. This
month, installation of the boardwalk precast planks, railings, land
and beach side access ramps
and stairs, light poles, sidewalks,
curbs, and plumbing fixtures, will
continue in Phase 3. While work
continues, beach access will only
be available at Beach 106th and
Beach 116th in this area. Access
will also be available at Beach
126th Street by Memorial Day.

The Lazer Speaks

OPENING DAY!
By Lou Pastina

It was a cold and rainy

start to the season in Rockaway this past weekend but
that didnt stop this intrepid traveler from venturing
out and checking out what
was happening in the Rock.
First I needed my wingman, Tim, to join me in my
adventures. When I told
him the first stop was the
Grand Opening of the Rockaway Beach Golf Club, he
promptly told me, Yeah? I
was there last weekend!
Well I guess that a was good
sign, because this place had
been waiting two years to
get approval to go live from
NYC. Thank you Mr. Mayor for such a pro-entrepreneurial approach to helping
new businesses get started
in this city. The best way to
bring unemployment down

is by encouraging people to
start their own businesses!
And this Golf Club thing has
all the makings of a great
place. I am not a golfer, but
I took a couple of swings
and I could get hooked on
this synthetic way of playing
golf. You see there is a bar
only a few steps from the
tee, and you can visit the bar
after each swing! I like that.
Best of luck Steve Stathis for
persevering, your place will
be around way longer than
this Mayor. It was worth the
wait.
Our next stop was the
opening night of the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. With
Matt Patterson bartending
it was going to be an interesting stop. But the RBSC
was less than full, and Mike
was filling in for Matt. Mike
was up to the task, and he
served us some tasty suds.

The place looks great as always ; but cold, rainy weather kept everyone away. So
with that in mind we scooted over to Sayras for a look
at what was happening on
the strip. But lo and behold,
no one was there either, but
it made getting a drink at the
bar easy and those meatball
sliders, good lord! If you do
Taste of Rockaway get the
meatball sliders at Sayras
they are the best. Speaking
of Taste of Rockaway, its
Saturday, May 7 and its bigger and better than ever. A
good plan is to do the Taste
and then shoot down to RAA
for music and art to close
out the night.
Well, the sun finally poked
its head out briefly on Saturday afternoon, and since
we had nothing in the fridge
we took a drive to Bungalow Bar. What a difference

sun and warmth makes,

while it was still too chilly
for outdoor dining, we ate
indoors. And it was packed!
And the food was delicious,
especially the steak salad.
A stroll outside after dinner
revealed that Bungalow Bar
is indeed ready for Memorial Day weekend with a new
tent, nice new grass, painted deck, the place looks really good. And they had so
many people working there;
the service was excellent.
Thats what I mean about
entrepreneurs, they create
jobs! And did you know the
Grayriders are playing their
7th Memorial Day weekend
gig on May 30th! Even old
rockers get jobs!
Yeah, it was a cold, rainy
start to the season, but
dont worry we have global
warming to heat things up!!
Yeah baby bring on summer!

With the addition of several
new retail stores, Rockaway is becoming more fashionable and on
Wednesday, May 25, local businesses will show off their products at the Inaugural Rockaway
Beach Fashion Night.
From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., local
retail businesses will gather at
the Community House (101-19
Rockaway Beach Boulevard) to
feature their Summer 2016 fashion collections. The fashion show
will showcase locally designed
and inspired beachwear and accessories. Additionally, the show
will feature mostly community-based photographers, hair
and make-up stylists, performers
and runway models. Some of the
products featured will come from
St. James Clothing, Boarders, Lola
Star, Off Season, Zingara Vintage,
De La Mer 1981, End of the A,
NiLu Kids, Blue Bungalow, Lanas
Loft, U.S. Surf and Surplus, Polly
and Esther and more.
Lola Star, Jimmy Dowd of St.
James Clothing and the Commu-

nity House are joining to make

this fashion forward event possible. Our goal is to promote
community involvement through
an elevated retail shopping experience. We will achieve this by
showcasing all the cool and creative fashion available at retail
shops in Rockaway, Lola Star said.
The evening will provide interactions with the important designers
and business owners that play an
integral part in Rockaways economic growth and creative future.
The show will be emceed by
world famous illusionist Rockaway resident Adam Cardone with
a fabulous after party with dance
grooves spun by one of Rockaways favorite DJs, Paddy Tubz.
This red carpet event will be free
of charge, but the Community
House will offer VIP Packages and
other specials.
Other local retail clothing stores
that want to get involved can contact Lola at Lola@lolastar.com or

Chance To Win
A FREE ANNUAL FERRY
PASS
On April 28, 2016 the New
York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC)
and Hornblower, the operator
of Citywide Ferry, announced
the launch of CitywideFerry.
NYC, the official web portal for
first citywide ferry service in
nearly 100 years.
During the construction and
development phase of Citywide Ferry, the website will
feature project updates, upcoming public meetings, a live
stream of boat construction
once underway, maps and
schedules, along with information on applying for one of
the over 150 quality local jobs
Citywide Ferry is expected to
create for New Yorkers.
Five lucky New Yorkers who
take a two-minute survey about

Citywide Ferry on the CitywideFerry.NYC website will automatically be entered to win one
of five annual Citywide Ferry
passes once service commences in 2017. Winners of the annual passes will be announced
as Citywide Ferry gets closer to
launch with one entry per person. The link to the ten-question survey is at the top of their
website.
Citywide Ferry Service will
be priced at the cost of a single subway ride, and operate
from 21 landings across the
city. When fully operational in
2018, it will carry an estimated 4.6 million trips per year
across six routes, providing
new transportation options to
communities where housing
and jobs are growing fast.

TIME TO FEAST!

give participants a chance to

try a Belle Harbor eatery while
checking out a hot spot to get
in a workout after over-indulging on Saturday. If the Pico popup at CROM is a success, other
neighborhood restaurants may
have the opportunity to create
pop-ups at future Taste events.
Other types of businesses are
also being thrown into mix.
As some of the sponsors of the
event, the vintage clothing
shop, Zingara Vintage and the
boutique clothing store featuring original products, Off Season, will offer special discounts
in their stores during the Taste.
Zingara Vintage has also donated some special coupons
for $10 to spend at the store.
These coupons will be given
at random in an envelope that
comes with the event pass. You
wont know if you get one until
you open the envelope, Kaskel
said. Another sponsor, St. James
Clothing, has made up Taste
beverage koozies, which will be
given out during the event. Lola

THURSDAY, MAY 5, 2016

Star is also contributing by making event t-shirts for the staff of
the participating restaurants.
The $10 ticket fee and a sponsorship by the Queens Chamber
of Commerce helps cover the
advertising costs. The restaurants dont make money off this
event. The vendors donate the
food and we have this low ticket price to pay for advertising,
which in turn goes towards local
newspapers. We spend several
weeks advertising this event to
give back to the local newspapers and keep the money within
the community, Kaskel said.
Involving more types of businesses in the event is part of the
mission of The Rockaway Union. When the Taste of Rockaway started, it was hosted by
the organization HEART, which
only included restaurants and
taverns. The Queens Chamber
of Commerce then created an
organization called the Rockaway Beach Merchant Association. In 2014, both groups
joined forces to become the
Rockaway Union. Together,
were trying creative ways to
get all businesses involved and

not just restaurants. The whole

purpose of the Rockaway Union
is to improve business activity
and quality in the Rockaways,
so were all pitching in and
everybody is getting something
good out of it, Kaskel said.
In addition to new businesses being involved, theres also a
new perk for participants. The
event pass can be purchased at
any of the participating restaurants until May 6 for $10, or $15
on the day of the event. The cost
in itself is a bargain, but those
who purchase a ticket will also
receive a $10 coupon for many
of the participating businesses, to spend at a later time. The
coupon is good until June 30.
This gives people an incentive
to come back. Everyone will
come to the Taste and have a
great time, but we want people
to come again. If you showed
support at the Taste, you basically get your money back
when you use this coupon. Its
a nice promotion and a way to
let people know we appreciate
their business and want them
to return, Kaskel said.
The Taste of Rockaway Beach

Page 13
has grown over the years and
Kaskel expects Saturdays event
to be the most attended yet.
Were expecting anywhere
from 1,200 to 2,000 people. Last
spring we had 1,000 people and
we have 18 vendors this time.
No matter what, its going to be
most attended one so far and
I think it can blow the doors
off of past events, Kaskel said,
adding that he welcomes the
continuous growth. Saturday
will be a carefree, fun-filled day
with delicious food from all that
Rockaway Beach has to offer. Its
affordable, its enjoyable and it
will be memorable. Speaking as
a merchant, I love seeing thousands of happy people eating
our food, he said.

event or merchants looking to

An Ounce Of
Mother Worth.
Happy Mothers Day! There is
an old proverb, which states, God
couldnt be everywhere so he invented mothers. With that one
sentence I know I have managed
to offend at least two groups of
individuals, those secularists who
cringe at any mention of a higher
power and those die hard Catholics who will immediately fire off

an email instructing me that God

is omnipresent so, in fact, he can
be every where at once. To both
groups of people I say - get over
yourselves, its Mothers Day! To
the PC Police, I recommend you
take the day off, spend some
quality time with your Moms
and let them try and loosen
your heads because it is obvious
that they are all screwed on way
too tightly for rational thought.
And for all you fundamentalist Catholics out there, please
remember that I grew up in an
Irish-Catholic family where
an ounce of mother was worth
more than a pound of clergy.
That being said, as you all know
this Sunday, May 8 is Mothers
Day, a day we celebrate motherhood by acknowledging and
honoring our mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers,
step-mothers, etc. Celebrations
of mothers and motherhood can
be traced back to the ancient
Greeks and Romans, who held
festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele,
but the clearest modern precedent for Mothers Day is the early Christian festival known as

Mothering Sunday. Personally,

growing up in the 1950s I didnt
have to go back that far and I
learned everything I needed to
know about Mothers Day from
the Donna Reed Show and Leave
it to Beaver! But I digress! What
better way to celebrate this special day with your Mom than to
take her to brunch at the Broad
Channel VFW this Sunday from
10 am to 2 p.m? As I always say,
there are so many reasons to love
brunch -- most importantly is the
simple fact that any meal which
has a Bloody Mary as its MVP is
a meal worth getting up and out
for... and the foods not bad either!
And before you start jumping all
over me about mentioning alcoholic beverages, keep in mind that
for many of her younger years my
Mom would proudly proclaim to
the family each year I intend to
spend Mothers Day the same way
I began my first pregnancy back in
1950...happily inebriated!

Long live the singer-songwriter.

Some say theyre dead and buried. Well, theres proof otherwise.
A singer-songwriter is an artist
who writes and performs their
own material, usually accompanied by an acoustic guitar or
piano. They perform the roles of
composer, lyricist, vocalist, and
instrumentalist.
The tradition of the singer/
songwriter has existed since man
could eke out a note on a primitive instrument and tell a story
through song. Woody Guthrie
was arguably the founder of the
modern folk movement in the
1940s, which inspired followers like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez,
James Taylor, Neil Young and
Joni Mitchell to revive the movement in the 1960s and 70s. They
are songs of protest, lost love or
plainly telling a story of a character, fictional or real. Besides
the American tradition, there
is the long-held Irish folk tradition, which was reintroduced by
the Clancy Brothers and Tommy

and Bruce Springsteens Nebraska album as major influences in

his playing and songwriting.
Hailing from the Windsor Terrace/Park Slope section of Brooklyn, Rafferty was one of six children born to a NYPD officer and
a school crossing guard. His connection to Rockaway runs deep.
His family, along with his cousins, the Timlins, rented a house
on Beach 93rd Street during the
summer season. Rafferty spent
seven summers as a lifeguard at
the Beach 66th Street shack. The
song, Girl from Summer on his
latest album represents Rockaway itself based on his time and
lasting memories spent on the
peninsula. The track also describes events that only former
lifeguards would understand.
Time was also spent in Connollys, when he should have
been at Sunday mass. He describes his cousin Helen Timlin
(now Kilgallen of Ocean Bliss
Studio and Rockaway Times notoriety) as being a big Neil Young
fan. She let him borrow her cas-

A Mothers Day Tribute

By Katie McFadden

I dont have stories of my

mom helping people as a cop,
like my father. But my mom
has been a hero in other ways.
First and foremost, I have to
thank my mom for bringing
me into the world. Carrying
a child for nine months and
giving birth is a feat in itself.
I came along 12 years after
my sister and eight after my
brother. The big gap wasnt
intentional. My mother tried
several years for a third kid
and endured several miscarriages. But because she didnt
give up hope, she had me at
the age of 38, and I am forever
grateful.
While my dad was the one
that taught me to be frugal,
my mom has always been
generous. My mom was a registered nurse and worked as a
case manager for many years
in Jamaica Hospital and she
was great at her job. At least,
when I got a cold or a bump,
my mom was able to tell me

what it was and assure me that

I wasnt dying. Despite being
good at what she did, I dont
remember a day where she
didnt come home saying, I
hate work. Shes happily retired now but I appreciate her
sacrifice of enduring the daily grind to ensure I had more
to enjoy than my $4-a-week
allowance from dad. I cant
count how many times she
took me to the mall or to the
movies almost every weekend. While my mom was good
about spending money, shes
never been good with numbers. Ill never forget the time
I asked her to help me with
my 4th grade math homework. My dad was the math
guy, but he was working so
I asked for moms help. I got
every single question wrong
on that assignment. My mom
passed her poor math skills
along to me, but she gave me
the gift of writing.
As I got older and went
through that teenage angst
phase, I admit I wasnt as

Patricia McFadden

close with my mom as I was

when I was little, but in 2010,
I was reminded of just how
valuable she was when she
desperately needed a transplant. It was the first time I
realized I could lose her forever. She was put on the donor list and by some miracle
she had her transplant about
10 days later. It was a long
road to recovery for my mom,
but she fought through and is
now healthier than ever.

My mom believes part of

the reason she was given a
second chance was to take
care of her own mother. My
moms relationship with my
grandma showed me what a
daughter should be to their
mother. From taking her out
to eat to taking her on every
family vacation to simply
calling her every day, my
mom made sure my grandma
never felt alone. They were
best friends. This will be the
first Mothers Day without my
grandma, who passed away
in July. The grief felt among
my family has been immense
and I know this Mothers Day
wont be easy, but I will do
my best to be what a daughter should be to their mother, too, and together well get
through.
P.S. I hope my own kids
will be as good to me as my
mom was to her mother.
Yes, mom, I have all intentions of providing grandkids
one day, please stop bugging me.

More Than Just A Boy And His Dog

By Pat Morgan

Sometimes a walk on the

beach is more than a walk on
the beach. Sometimes inspiration happens. And so it did
for local filmmaker Jeremy
Goldberg.
Goldberg is a student at the
School of Visual Arts (SVA)
in Manhattan and his animated short film/thesis project, Precipitation, is eligible for an award in the three
Outstanding Animated Film
Award categories at SVAs
upcoming 27th Dusty Film &
Animation Festival. His animated short, eight months
in the making, was initially inspired by a day down at
the beach with his golden retriever, Jack. They were playing catch when storm clouds
suddenly moved in and cut
their day short. The story line
for the film came flowing out
later while Goldberg was on
the elliptical exercise machine at Cyberzone. While he
was striding on the machine,

he frantically typed the details into his iPhone as they

came to him.
The animated short takes
the viewer through a journey
of clouds in the shape of a boy
playing ball in the sky with
his dog. Not to give away the
plot, but the main character
is transformed and returns as
another cloud form, but still
retains its essence.
The theme of this film
is about people changing,
Goldberg said. We grow
to be different, but the love

for each other is the same.

Goldberg wrote, directed and
created the animation for his
film.
Jeremy was inspired by animation from an early age. I
watched Nickelodeon every
day, specifically Rugrats and
SpongeBob
SquarePants,
said Goldberg. He knew that
he wanted to create cartoons
and eventually interned at
Nickelodeon and MTV in
2015.
Upon
graduating
high
school, Goldberg had the

option of attending the Rhode Island School of Design

or Pratt Institute, but he selected SVA because it was in
Manhattan. He wanted to be
part of city life and the energy it provided. SVA offered
two types of animation options; 3D Animation in the
Computer Arts department
or Traditional Animation in
the Movie and Film department. His decision was influenced by a chance meeting
with filmmaker Brad Bird of
The Incredibles and Mission
Impossible fame. Bird suggested that Jeremy go the traditional animation route so
he could sharpen his story
development skills.
Goldberg graduates this
month and hopes to obtain
a position in television production. Los Angeles is the
center for these career opportunities and a move there
is a viable option. He would
love to work on animated TV

himself a Rockaway Times tee.
Former Beach Club owner
Steve Good runs the Wild West
Diner in Florida now. Steven
Peithman stopped by to tell him

that people in Rockaway are so

much better dressed these days.
We gotta hand it to the McFaddens, Patricia and Dan, who
brought some real color to those
drab looking pyramids in Egypt.

Soon To Be 100 !
ROSE OSHINSKY
By Marshall Sorgen

Rose Oshinsky was born in 1916

in Grodno, Poland on May 15, 1916.
In the midst of Word War I with Europe being in much turmoil, much
of the extended family lived together and they did what they could to
get by. Roses grandmother owned
a small bakery which contributed
to the support of the family.
In 1923, Rose and her family emigrated to America a move that
changed her life forever. A young
girl in Poland had limited opportunities in life. But now, settling into
a walkup apartment on the lower
east side of New York all things
were possible.
Rose enrolled in school, quickly
learning to read and write English,
excelled in all the other subject
matter and was then eligible for the
rapid advancement classes. She
joined the school glee club, which
did concerts around New York City.
This was a very happy time, which
fostered a lifelong love of music.
Later on Rose started her first job

while continuing to attend school

at night. Girls married very young
in those days and in 1931, at the
age of fifteen, she met and married
her first husband, William Klein.
Tough times followed the country
was mired in The Great Depression. But, with a little ingenuity
and determination they endured.
Her first son, Sol was born in 1933.
After giving birth, she remarked,
I did this? Its amazing! Her husband William was in the produce
business so the family always had
enough to eat. The family was increased in 1940 with the birth of
another son Donald.
The dark clouds of World War II
loomed large the following year.
There was much scarcity and anxiety about the future. But Rose and
her family always managed to take
some time for fun like going to Coney Island or the Brooklyn Botanic
Gardens.
After the war the family moved to
Florida, lived in a cozy mobile home
for a few years and enjoyed the sub-

tropical balmy weather. Rose and

her two sons moved back to New
York because of the untimely demise of her husband. She went back
to work to support herself and family. It was a struggle but with a little
fortitude and determination she
made it work. Her son Donald married and had three sons, Billy, Erik
and Darryl. They in turn had three
girls Talia, Aliyah and Whitney.
In 1950, she met and married her
second husband, William Oshinsky. On their first date they went
dining and dancing and at the end
of the evening, he proposed marriage to her. Rose thought he was a
nut job however she eventually
accepted and that became a 50year happy liaison.
Rose and her family moved from
Brooklyn to Rockaway in 1964
where she has lived ever since.
Through the years she has worked,
played and traveled with her husband, Bill, made great parties and
always enjoyed coming back to the
beach scene in Rockaway.

Happy 100th Rose !

In recent times they joined the

Rockaway Park Senior Center
and they had memorable experiences taking part in shows under
the guidance of Bill Mendlowe
and Abe Mintz.
With family members moving away from New York, Rose
now regards the senior center
as extended family. The hot
meals, the trips and the social
connections are all very important to her.
If you have a conversation
these days with Rose, you will absolutely walk away with a smile
on your face. She will listen, be
sympathetic and if asked, offer
some good advice. From humble beginnings, Rose has made
a great life for herself fantastic!

Choosing A Doc
Dear Editor:
For most people, selecting a
good Primary Care Physician
(PCP) is a big decision. Lets
see, what do I want?
A doctor close to home, a
doctor that comes highly recommended by neighbors and
friends or a doctor who has
been many years in the community? Do I want a male doctor, or a female doctor? Some
doctor-patient
relationships
last many years, and some disintegrate quickly.
I felt compelled to write this
letter as I heard quite a few
horror stories lately. These sce-

narios can serve as a word to

the wise for us all. 1] A patient
had a PCP for 14 years-The PCP
moved out of town with just a
weeks notice. The patient is still
looking for a suitable doctor. 2]
A patients doctor went on vacation, left no back-up doctor. This
patient was out of medication.
In order to get the meds, the patient had to go to a doctor for a
full workup, to get the meds. 3]
A patient glanced at her chart
when the doctor was out of the
room. She was astonished to see
how much medical information
was missing, especially two
major surgeries. 4] A patient received a bill for $8,500.00 from
their dentist, after paying the
dentist $12,000.00 for extensive work. The patient inquired,
what is this bill for?? The patient
never received another bill. 5] A
patient had some very serious
heart tests, and was told the
cardiologist would follow up
in three days with the results.
Twenty five days went by and
the patient received a call from
the doctors nurse. Her professional response was: your tests
look O.K.

Rockaway Rant
Dear Editor:
Manhattan like Rockaway is
surrounded by water.
Manhattans
waterfronts,
since Bloomberg, have been
amazingly and stupendously
transformed, beautified and
retrofitted.
What about Rockaways waterfront?
Not one development, it
seems to me anyway --- not one
creative or interesting improvement here in Rockaway since
2000 (or, can I say since 1965?).
In fact, Rockaway is not even
breaking even!!! Rockaway still
hasnt even returned to her
1960 state of being!

The Rockaway Times

Look at the Neponsit home,
and how about the twenty blocks of beachfront from
Beach 30 to Beach 50, and why
is the boardwalk still undone,
and why are the bayfront and
baywall disgusting? And look at
The Blvd on B-115. And speaking of The Blvd, why are the
roadbeds of both Beach Channel Drive & The Blvd. horrible
& deplorable, and the MGP site
still sits like a Louisiana swamp,
and - OMG -the Army Corps of
Engineers 1965 plan to protect
Rockaway is still on the drawing board, and look at the monstrosity foisted on Beach 94 by
some
politically-connected
developers! Its true that both
Rockaway bridges have been
retrofitted - twice!- in the last
twenty years, so that now Rockaways visitors (our revenue
source) gotta pay $8.00 to come
and go.
Everybody in Manhattan (&
Brooklyn for that matter) is in a
hurry; everybody here is asked
to be patient.
Manhattan prospers, Rockaway lingers.

CELEBRATING
ALL MOTHERS
By Paulette Mancuso

May is the official month

of spring celebrating Mother Earths abundance. All
at once the trees pop with
flowering buds and the
soil brings forth all sorts of
greenery and colors.
It is
a time of rejuvenation: refreshing what is old, reviving
what has been resting, bringing new life into the day to
day.
Spring in many cultures in
the world is a time to celebrate motherhood; in some
cultures it falls on the first
day of spring, in others it is
during the spring season.
Bringing forth life is associated with this season manifesting in the seeds that grow
into flowers and vegetables,
and the birds nests from
which tiny chicks take flight.
The first layer of this celebration is of course to honor our mothers, all of our
family members and friends
who are mothers who have
given of themselves to give
life. The next layer is to
think about their nurturing
qualities, their generosity,
their selflessness. And with
gratitude from the heart, acknowledge all we have been
given being born into this
world. Life is a gift we were
given by our mothers.
Some women are mothers without having had
children. These are the ones
who are nurturing and supportive and who are there
to water the seeds of new
ideas, to encourage growth,
to be there for whatever life

brings. They can be friends,

aunts,
cousins,
sisters.
Mothers and acting mothers share an innate ability to
care for and nurture. This
balances the thinking part
of us, the part that reasons
and acts from learning. The
motherly instinct is from the
heart space and is pure and
simple.
So, lets celebrate all that
spells motherhood and
honor and be grateful for
all the mothers in our lives
here or past who have
touched us in a unique way.
May you be happy. May you
be free. May you be grateful.
May you let go of things that
do not serve you. May you
have inner peace.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

DEMOCRACY AWAKENING
By Joan Flynn

I was arrested on Monday. I

was in Washington DC with our
daughter Katie. She has been arrested four or five times but this
time we got arrested together. It
wasnt just the two of us; over 300
people were with us, including
Jerry Greenfield and Ben Cohen.
You know, the ice cream guys.
On their website Ben said, The
history of our country is that nothing happens, until people start
putting their bodies on the line
and risk getting arrested. It all
comes down to a simple idea that
we believe in whole-heartedly: if
you care about something, you
have to be willing to risk it all
your reputation, your values, your
businessfor the greater good.
Protesting injustice had been on
the agenda all week. In fact, there
were over 1,200 arrests in all. Wed
been in Washington, D.C. with
Democracy Awakening, a remarkable event that brought together

hundreds of groups and thousands of people in an effort to fix

our broken democracy.
There are two trends that everyone from Greenpeace to the
NAACP realize that are making it
impossible for much good work
to get done. The first is the flood
of unregulated cash flowing into
campaigns and elections. And
the second is the wave of attacks
in many states on citizens right
to vote. Each of the 260 groups
that came together for this action
knows that our only chance of
winning on any of our causes is to
come together to fix democracy
first.
The Nation magazine reported,
So much of the media continues
to treat the erosion of American
democracy as a fringe issue rather than as one of the most fundamental issues in the election,
which makes gatherings like Democracy Awakening and Democracy Spring so important.
Not surprisingly, the same me-

our dysfunctional democracy.
Movement leaders agreed that
whats critical now is for people to
take the energy from Capitol steps
and convert it to power back in
their home districts. Many of the
Democracy Awakening activists
held meetings with members of
Congress after the protest to push
for bills like the Voting Rights Advancement Act and Fair Election
Now Act that would restore the
Voting Rights Act and provide
public financing for elections.
Democracy Spring and Democracy Awakening are proof that a
strong pro-democracy movement
has emerged, but its still in its
infancy. This is not a moment.
Its a movement, said NAACP
president Cornell Brooks on
the steps of the Capitol and he
instructed the crowd to Stay

dia that ignores these fundamental issues barely covered the protests that addressed them.
The breadth of the Democracy
Awakening supporters makes it
unique. Greenpeace, the NAACP,
and the Communications Workers of America (CWA), three
groups with distinct memberships
who have rarely worked together
in the past, planned the gathering.
Now theres recognition that all of
their priorities are connected.
We have been struggling for
these same issuesfor a functioning and fair democracy, for a clean
and healthy environmentfor so
many years, said Annie Leonard,
the executive director of Greenpeace. Ive been doing this work
for thirty years, and I feel like we
are at an incredibly unique moment, because so many people
across the progressive movement
have realized that what is stopping us from achieving our goals,
whether it is good public education or a clean environment or

Women of Rockaway:
LOLA STAR

By Katie McFadden

Who runs the peninsula? Women. A large number of local businesses and organizations are
owned and operated by females.
And they deserve recognition.
As part of an ongoing series, the
Rockaway Times is profiling local
female entrepreneurs each week.
This week is Lola Star, owner of
Lola Star Rockaway on Beach
116th.
This month, Lola Star celebrates her first year of bringing
her magic to Rockaway with her
Beach 116th Street souvenir and
gift shop. When you walk into
the bright red doors of the shop,
youre welcomed into party-like
atmosphere as you browse original Rockaway-inspired t-shirts,
hats, mugs and other souvenirs,
as well as funky items from roller skates to mermaid gifts and
more. I design a lot of merchandise that is inspired by the spirit of
Rockaway. Ive been inspired by
my experiences there and the history of resiliency in Rockaway so
I have a lot of merchandise that
celebrates that spirit and other
magical, funky, interesting treasures that Ive searched the entire
world for to cultivate this fun,
welcoming party environment,
she said. Lola is joined by a staff
that includes locals, Evelyn and
Julie, and many seasonal employees.
Lola, formerly known as Diana
Carlin, had been given the nickname Lola when she was a kid.
When I was 7-years-old, I used
to roller skate around my familys
basement to Barry Manilows Copacabana. Her name was Lola
became my fantasy persona. Id
be dressed in my grandmothers
flapper dress, dreaming about
the future, living in this roller disco fantasy, feeling empowered.
Lola became my nickname and
when I started designing clothes,
I wanted the brand to have that
same sense of empowerment I
felt down in that basement, so
Lola Star became an appropriate
fit, she said.
Lola not only developed her
persona at a young age. She also
had an early entrepreneurial spir-

it. I was a business person since
I was born. As soon as I learned
how to French braid, I made a
catalog of different braids I could
do and I did for them neighborhood kids for money. One year I
wanted a Cabbage Patch doll and
my parents wouldnt get me one.
I got a weaving loom, so I wove
Cabbage Patch blankets and embroidered them with the names
of dolls and sold them to kids in
my class and I bought my own
Cabbage Patch dolls. One year
I went on tour with the Grateful Dead. My friends wanted to
party, but I realized how much I
could make selling tie dye t-shirts,
so I spent the whole time selling
t-shirts in the parking lot. I never
saw a show. I was always a business person, but I didnt know it,
she said. Lola had started designing t-shirts at 15 years old and by
18 years old, she opened her first
store in her hometown of Detroit,
called The Groovy Rainbow Planet. I handmade everything in my
moms laundry room, much to
her dismay, so in the summers
between college, I would open
this store, and then go back to
school to study painting, she
said.
Lola aspired to be a painter, but
reality hit when she graduated.
I realized that being a painter
would be a difficult lifestyle and I
didnt like the idea that my paintings would always be in such a
small environment like a single
gallery, so I started to take t-shirt

design more seriously because it

was a way my art could become
a part of who you are, she said.
Shortly after graduating college,
Lola moved to New York to find
more opportunity as a designer. While designing t-shirts part
time, Lola worked gigs doing
store and window displays for
businesses like Urban Outfitters
and Barneys. Both of those jobs
were beneficial because I gained
valuable experience that I bring
to my own stores now, she said.
Noticing the need for a souvenir shop in Coney Island, Lola
opened her first store there in
2001 and her brand has continued to grow. She now owns two
Coney Island shops, one on the
boardwalk and one on Surf Avenue, which she will soon transform into a dazzle parlor where
shell sell temporary tattoos and
a station where people can bedazzle their own t-shirts. She also
has plans to open a shop in Staten Island. In 2010, Lola brought
her love of roller skating to Coney
Island with the Dreamland Roller Disco. The Coney Island rink
closed but she later reopened in
Prospect Park, where she continues to host roller disco parties
every Friday night.
Lola opened her Rockaway
shop in May 2015. Two years
ago I was spending time in Rockaway and I could feel this energy
and I felt like Rockaway was on
the verge of exploding with magic and I thought I had to open a

store here now. With all of these

new businesses and events here,
its an exciting time and Im happy to be a part of it and be among
all these amazing fellow business
owners, she said. Although living in Brooklyn, Lola says she is
looking for a place in Rockaway.
Since I opened a store here, my
heart has found its home in Rockaway and every time I go over that
bridge to Brooklyn, I have this
feeling that I dont want to go. Ive
made great friends and here and
want to spend more time here,
she said.
Since opening her Rockaway shop, Lola has broadened
her presence by adding carts
to the boardwalk, which shell
have more of this summer. Shes
also going to skate into Rockaways heart when she brings her
Dreamland Roller Disco parties
to the Beach 108th street rink on
Saturday nights this summer.
Knowing the struggles of being
an entrepreneur, Lola will be giving other entrepreneurs opportunities for exposure. She is organizing a Fashion Night Out on May 25
at the Community House, where
local retail businesses can show
off their products. Also, this summer, she is opening a market for
creative people with big dreams
to sell their products at Beach 67th
Street. As the popular surf spot becomes a bigger destination, more
opportunities are popping up.
Maribel Araujo of Caracas will be
bringing food vendors to the area
while Lola will host an art market
featuring six vendors to sell homemade items on weekends. Shes
currently accepting applications
(Email BeachShops@lolastar.com
for info).
To those looking to start their
own businesses, Lola says, believe in your dream and ability
to achieve that dream and make
it into a reality. Know that youre
going to be faced with a lot of
challenges, but you can overcome them and the trouble and
scariness of embarking on such a
journey is all worth it.
Lola Star Rockaway, located at
174 Beach 116th Street, is open
seven days a week. Check out lolastar.com for more info.

Arts in Parts Does Their Part

TO RESTORE BUS STOP MURALS
the community, Grillo said.
Grillo says this is the third
restoration project of the murals over the years. She is in
discussions with the Parks Department to have the murals
waterproofed so that her work
isnt repeatedly damaged. In the
meantime, she will be restoring
one of the least damaged murals. You have this beautiful
new boardwalk but all of these
murals are damaged. Im trying to do one at a time. Since
this one at Beach 85th Street
was damaged least after Sandy,
I decided to start here. By next
week, everything will be painted and sparkly again for at least
a year, Grillo said, explaining
that on May 5 at 10:30 a.m., she
would be repainting the Beach
85th Street mural along with a
team of volunteers from an advertising company. After the
Beach 85th Street mural, Grillo
has plans to restore the surfer
mural on Beach 107th Street,

as the Parks Department says

it has funding available for this
project. She then plans to wait
to restore the other murals until something is done to ensure
they wont deteriorate so quickly. I want them to look good
but I dont want to waste energy. These are Rockaway icons
and people dont want them
destroyed, she said.

Esther Grillos bus stop murals are getting a facelift, but first
they needed a good cleaning. On
Wednesday, April 27, Grillo received some help from a group
of kids from the creative nonprofit Arts in Parts who cleaned
up the Beach 85th Street mural.
Grillo painted her bus stop
murals back in 1997. Vulnerable to the elements, the murals
have lost their sparkle and Grillo is hoping to bring it back. Always looking to involve children
in her projects, Grillo attended
a recent Rock Soup meeting in
hopes of finding a helping hand
to clean up the Beach 85th
Street mural before she restores
it. Grillo linked up with Arts in
Parts and about two-dozen children showed up to help clean.
With gloves, sponges and mops
in hand, the children went to
work to clean up the mural,
which has been damaged over

the years by skateboarders, bicyclists, Hurricane Sandy and

general wear and tear.
The kids came out during the
spring break to help with the
project. Were having spring
break workshops focusing on
leaving places and people better than we found them though
picking up litter, giving compliments and helping the community. We are trying to do our
part because the kids are inheriting whats being polluted. The
opportunity to help a local artist was really exciting because
weve worked on murals with
the kids before but this is something that they drive by every
day and will continue to drive
by, Arts in Parts co-founder
Heather Kramer said. I always
try to bring kids into these projects because then they have
some ownership over it. Kids
from the community helped
me paint these originally. These
murals are points of pride for

Dont Sleep On This

Get Checked
By Peter Galvin, MD

The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, in the

United States is high, estimated
at 2% of women and 4% of men
in the middle-aged work force.
The incidence of OSA in black
people, Asians and older adults
is estimated to be even higher.
Unfortunately only 10% of people with OSA are diagnosed a
dismal figure considering that
OSA is associated with resistant
hypertension and a greater risk
of stroke, cardiovascular disease
and death. In fact OSA is directly linked to hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure,

cardiac arrhythmias, sudden

cardiac death, stroke and diabetes. In addition, OSA is a major
risk factor for those undergoing
surgery with general anesthesia.
Often screening for OSA is only
recommended after an event
like a car accident brings the
symptoms (daytime sleepiness
or inattentiveness, falling asleep
at work) to light. You may recall
the Metro-North train crash last
year where the engineer had the
train going 80mph into a 30mph
curve. The engineer was subsequently diagnosed with OSA.
The word apnea means absence of breathing. Those with
OSA actually stop breathing

while asleep which causes the

brain to awaken. This causes
interrupted sleep with a lack
of REM sleep (dream sleep).
Screening for OSA, which usually
involves having the patient stay
overnight at a sleep lab, is recommended for anyone reporting
loud snoring, observed episodes
of apnea, gasping or choking at
night, unrefreshing sleep (waking
up tired), morning headaches,
or unexplained fatigue and excessive tiredness during the day.
An acronym for the symptoms is
called STOP-BANG. It stands for
Snoring, Tiredness, Observed
apnea, Pressure (as in high blood
pressure), BMI greater than 35,
Age over 50, Neck circumference
greater than 16 inches and Gender (as in male). Score 1 point for
every yes answer. A score of 3 or
greater indicates a moderate to
high risk of OSA.
Polysomnography (sleep lab
study) is the gold standard of
testing and is preferred. Home
testing is available but is not recommended for those who have
a high probability of OSA. Home
testing may underestimate the
severity of sleep apnea and has

The Rockaway Times

a false-negative rate as high as
17%. Treatment of OSA with a
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) mask reduces the
10-year risk of fatal and non-fatal motor vehicle accidents by
52%, 10 year risk of a heart attack
by 49% and the 10-year risk of
stroke by 31%. Treatment with
CPAP has also been found to be
cost effective.
If you or someone you know
is at risk of or has symptoms of
OSA get to your doctor for an
evaluation. If the medical examination and blood tests fail to
find a cause for your symptoms,
your doctor will most likely refer you to a sleep lab for a sleep
study. You may think that wearing a mask during sleep will be
uncomfortable but most patients report that they get used to
it plus they feel so much better.
Not to mention that their risk of
getting serious diseases is significantly reduced.
My next column will deal with
another sleep abnormality
narcolepsy.

The New American Lawn
By Alex Berkowitz
When we think of our front
yards, we think of shrubs, flowers, and a green lawn. But lately
a number of my clients at Sungold Design Group have been
asking me for alternatives to a
high-maintenance traditional
grass lawn. With average temperatures increasing, and water becoming more expensive,
its more and more difficult to
maintain the lush greenery of
grass lawns. Also, the truth is
that we live on top of sand, so
when we water it drains right
through making it a constant
race to provide our lawns with
the proper amount of water to
avoid the dreaded browning.
Weeds can take over when the
grass is mowed too short causing many of us to throw up our
hands in frustration! Never
fear- today Im going to discuss
alternatives to the traditional
front lawn.

First off, we live in Queens

County, and there are NO NYC
laws in existence that mandate
that a private residential property must have a lawn in the front
yard. Now please dont run and
have your front yard covered
in concrete- this is Rockaway
and we pride ourselves on the
beauty and landscaping of our
homes. My point is that there
are many landscape alternatives
we can use on our front yard that
are as beautiful as a lawn, with
lower maintenance and less environmental impact.
I love the look and feel of
grass as much as anyone, and
if you have kids or a dog having
a lawn makes sense. However,
since the development of Levittown in 1947, weve been holding onto the ideals of the iconic
American lawn, and 65 years
later I can tell you there have
been great strides in landscape

A SIDE ISSUE
DUE TO A HOT
SITUATION

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & his daughter

Katie Lucev

A long time ago in Rockaway

Beach, far, far away, a house fire
took place on Bayside Place (Bch.
84th Street) in the Hammels Section of the peninsula. The heat
from this house fire was so intense that nearby homes, some
distance away, were threatened
with spontaneous combustion!

The NYC Fire Department

saved the day by spraying water on the endangered buildings that were close by to
keep them cooled down. But
despite the efforts, the vinyl
siding on one house melted down. But this home was
saved from total destruction. A
job well done by NEW YORKs

SINGER-SONGWRITER

Continued from Page 15

sette of After The Gold Rush that

lulled him to sleep every night.
Young also inspired Rafferty to
take up the harmonica later on.
In the age of artists spitting out
overmixed downloadable digital singles, Rafferty has reverted
back to an unconventional approach by releasing his albums
in a series, which has been affectionately compared to the Star
Wars Trilogy. His latest album,
The King of New York, hails
back to the old school method
of recording. In the age of endless audio remixing, Rafferty
took a barebones attitude to this
recording. On most of the 12
tracks, it is simply Rafferty and
his crisp sounding Taylor 412CE
acoustic guitar. The few tracks
recorded with the band (Julian
Deych on guitar, Jessica Corbin
on keyboards and vocals, Patrick
Ryan on acoustic bass, Michael
Guigiano on drums/percussion,
and Jon Altschuler on organ)
were captured in one take in a
friends basement recording studio in Park Slope. This album was

THURSDAY, MAY 5, 2016

preceded by Lucky (2013) and
the third portion of the trilogy
Less More Perfect is scheduled
to be released in 2017.
The origins of Raffertys songs
are heartfelt. His songwriting
approach is simple: write about
what you know. Rafferty is able to
offer the listener compact stories
with his intelligently placed lyrics
narrating each tale. There is not
one clich phrase in any of his
tunes. Its like having a new short
story in each song.
The title track, The King of New
York, is a fond tribute to his father, Mike aka Skippy, who was
an NYPD officer for 37 years in
Manhattan. Being a heavy smoker and exposed to smoke in a fire,
Skippy had contracted emphysema. He was still on active duty
at the age of 63. Despite his failing health, being a police officer
defined his whole identity. He
reluctantly filed his mandatory retirement papers six weeks before
his scheduled end date. One night
he went to bed and didnt wake
up. He was technically still on the
job and was buried in his Summer Blouse. The song describes
how a beat cops thought of them-

selves as royalty, in which Rafferty crowns his father The King of

New York. The song is dedicated
to every police officer and firefighter that has served this city.
Another track, Drinkers Life,
describes the longing for tradition
in a world of gentrification, which
will change things not for the better per Rafferty. It was inspired by
a Pete Hamill book. In the song,
the Irish Wake begins when the
mourners left Smiths funeral
home and went across the street
to Farrells. Their close proximity
made sure that everyone had to
stop for at least one after the formal wake at Smiths. No one was
ever lost from the wake to the bar,
he said. In a similar vein, Rafferty
has another track titled Brooklyn, You Owe Me One which
describes the tension between
Brooklyn natives and the new arrivals gentrifying their neighborhoods.
In late 2012, Rafferty was challenged to write a song about Superstorm Sandy. Hey Sandy
FU! was first performed at the
Bungalow Bar. Around that time,
he recalls playing an emotionally
charged Thursday night gig in Pippins, located in Bay Ridge where
many residents of the Rockaway
peninsula were displaced. He was
moved by how people from the
peninsula were helping each other, which he describes as a testament to mankind.
Rafferty speaks fondly of the late
Brian Monahan. He had the pleasure of playing with Brian on a few
occasions, most memorably playing Christmas songs in McSorleys
Ale House in NYC. He said Brian

Page 39

connected with people like no

one I ever met. Rafferty, like other
musicians, benefited from overflow gigs due to Brians popularity.
Rafferty tells the story of how Brian met his friend Mike Minogue
on only one occasion and had a
brief conversation about Mikes
admiration for Bruce Springsteen. One night, Mike walked
into a bar that Brian was playing. As soon as Brian saw Mike
walk in, he switched mid-song to
an obscure Springsteen song that
just blew Mike away. Brian had
that gift and is sorely missed.
Raffertys official album release for The King of New York
was held at Rocky Sullivans in
Red Hook Brooklyn on April 16.
Besides Brooklyn, Rockaway
and Long Beach, Rafferty also
has a growing following on the
Jersey Shore. He plans to promote this album backed up by
the aforementioned musicians
who played on it. He recently
dubbed the band John Rafferty
and The Horse Thieves, which is
a tongue-in-cheek tribute to his
infamous ancestors from County
Roscommon, Ireland.
Rafferty has upcoming gigs at
the Bungalow Bar (377 B92 St) on
Friday, June 10 and Friday, June
24. For more information on his
CD and 2016 Summer Schedule,

CRUEL AND STANDARDIZED PUNISHMENT

By Joan Diehl

My daughter, MJ Diehl, has

a fourth-grader who was subjected to the New York State
ELA exams. She nicknamed
the testing experience aptlyCruel and Standardized
Punishment. The reactions
of my students, in The FifthGrade Writers Club at PS/
MS 114 substantiate her indictment. Ive taught children
of various backgrounds and
skill-sets for decades and
if theres one thing I know,
theres a more humane and
effective way to evaluate intelligence and tap into a childs
true potential. My students
echo these sentiments below:

JOSHUA NATANZON
State Test Mayhem: Ring! The
state test had begun. Sweat
rained down my forehead, and
I was in the presence of a beast,
the ELA state test. I was trembling like a cute puppy stuck
outside in icy cold snow. As I
took my seat my heart beat so
fast, I thought it would explode.
The words looked like shooting
arrows but I defended myself
with my pencil sword. I said to
myself, I am smart, I can do
it if I proceed and be the best
I can be. I took my pencil in
my trembling hand and started
to write. And like a marathon
runner exhausted-I finished
the state test. It felt like I had
destroyed a monster.

STACEY JIANG

The ELA is the test that makes

even excellent students cower in
fear. I limped towards my doom
and a packet of tests was slammed
into my hand. Once I opened my
packet, words stabbed my heart
like spies sent to kill their target.
Then, I encountered the beast,
formally known as the multiple-choice. I filled in the bubble
on my answer sheet and a list
of regrets filled my mindand,
that was only question one. I
thought the test was over since I
just finished multiple choice but
sadly it was just the beginning I
soon reached the worst of the
worst, the most diabolical of all
villains, the extended response.
Even though I had all the time in
the world to finish, I felt like I was
writing one wrong answer after
the other. Soon, the onslaught
was over. For adults, this would
be just like ending your six-hour
workday. I wish this test proves
to my dad and mom how hard
Im working in school, but this is
not the main point here. I think
we should abolish the ELA test,
end it forever. I think that one
test shouldnt determine how
you are as a student- why do
we have to take a test made by
some guy in Albany? I think its
so morbid and horrendous in its
entirety.

Blue Fescu, low growing creeping Junipers, Liriope, Sedum,

and the soft and durable traditional Pennsylvania Sedge,
make eye-catching displays.
Many people have asked me
about artificial turf. What I can
say is there has been great development in that category, but
the products still do not have a
truly natural look and though
plusher than Astroturf, they
can feel less like sod and more
like plastic Tiki lays.
The bottom line is, you dont
need to feel pressured to maintain a lawn in the year 2016. But
if you love the look and feel of
a lawn and are happy to invest

in its maintenance, make sure

your gardener doesnt mow it
too short and consider updating your sprinkler system to
one that is more efficient. At
Sungold we provide irrigation
for our customers that is highly efficient to ensure that their
landscape will remain beautiful through the years.
Happy Gardening!

Rethinking your lawn doesnt
have to be a radical overnight
shift, but now is a good time
to start taking action that will
lead to saving money and water resources in the future. An
easy way to decrease the size
of your lawn is the increase
the area used for planting
beds. Adding shrubs, trees,
flowers, and ornamental
grasses will add beauty to

On The Road With Rover And Rosa

THAILAND
By Wild Rover

One of the best things about

travel is its infinite fluidity. The
travel experience is so dependent on you, the traveler, that even
visiting the exact same place can
produce a drastically different
experience based on your mindset and energy. The same goes
for timing and order when traveling to multiple countries on the
same trip. For Irish Rosa and I,
Thailand as our fourth destination, put it in a tough position to
maximize its potential. So while
we enjoyed it, it stands as a relative disappointment, but thats as
much about us, as it is Thailand.
At concerts, the crowd and band
feed off the energy of the other,
which is why shows are so thrilling, because you dont know exactly what kind of energy each
side is going to have that night.
For Thailand, the Mrs. and I had
weak energy, and worse, specific
expectations, and as a result the
Thailand show didnt blow the
roof off as it maybe should have.
We landed in Bangkok after a
short flight from Luang Prabang.
Like a lot of flights in SE Asia
there isnt an available gate, so
we exit the plane to board a bus
to ride into the terminal. Irish
Rosa promptly slips on the stairs
and lands right on her butt. As a
Latina, she has plenty of cushion
to ease the fall, but it was the type
of omen that when it opens the
trip, can be hard to shake. Worse
than the slippery stairs, our expectations stacked the deck
against Bangkok. We like to have
no expectations when we travel.
Without any specific expectations, you can better appreciate
a place for what it is, rather than
comparing it to what you thought
it would be. Almost impossible
to do with a place like Bangkok.
From the Hangover 2 movie to
the famous ladyboys and redlight
districts, almost everyone has an
image of Bangkok in their minds
eye. For us, we pictured a Southeast Asian wild west anything
goes type city filled with markets,
noise, and all manner of vibrant
street life. Other than the ladyboys, who youll see enough that
you start to check everyone for an

Adams apple, our vision of Bangkok totally missed the mark.

Bangkok is a huge, cosmopolitan city that for the most part is
clean and well run. Whats so
bad about that you ask? Absolutely nothing. Its usually a recipe for a great city, but our expectations and timing made it a
negative for Bangkok. If we had
to compare it to somewhere, itd
be a much cheaper, more exotic Hong Kong. Sounds good,
right? This where the timing hurt
Bangkok for us. If we had started our trip here we would have
probably loved it, but in the order that we got there, the big city
aspect felt already covered by
HK and the temples and monuments seemed modest after
Cambodia. For us, Bangkok sat
between two stools and our energy didnt unlock the city. With
the right energy, theres much
to enjoy in Bangkok. The food is
out of this world. There are dozens or ornately decorated temples and pagodas dating back to
the 18th century. The nightlife
scene is hip with great rooftop
bars atop many high-rise hotels.
Great Muay Thai with ringside
seats for less than $50. A great
city to eat, drink, and explore on
any budget.
Side note, good God are Chi-

nese tourist groups annoying.

They travel in groups of no less
than 30 led by a shrieking guide,
and half have umbrellas to poke
you in the eye in these packed
tourist destinations, despite the
fact that theres not a drop of
cloud in the sky. I really have no
idea why they even travel since
it looks miserable, but they are
oblivious as can be and seem
happy. Suffice it to say they are
making more allies for the US
than any president could, since
they are universally loathed by
locals and guides alike.
After Bangkok, we headed south to sample Thailands
world famous beaches. We spent
five days in Koh Lanta, an island
on the southwest coast of Thailand. We chose the island because its a little harder to get to
and in the sweet spot of not too
touristy, but developed enough
to be easy. Best yet, there were
no hordes of Chinese on giant busses ruining every place
they went like in Bangkok. They
hate the sun luckily. Instead
the most common tourists were
Swedes, so a decided upgrade
there. Beautiful sunsets, amazing, mostly empty beaches, great
kayaking, and dirt cheap delicious food definitely put Thailand up a notch. Very relaxing

and enjoyable five days, but a

beach is a beach no matter how
nice, so not much more to report
on that front.
Keeping with our Central
America comparisons, Thailand
is definitely Mexico. Great food,
amazing beaches, some decidedly seedy aspects, under-appreciated history, and plane
loads of sunburnt or soon to be
sunburnt tourists. Both Thailand
and Mexico are filled with tourists for a reason: theyre great
destinations. But because of
that all of the major destinations
have a significant tourist industry overlay, which makes it easy
to enjoy, but harder to get a layer deeper than the tourist trail.
Thailand was the first place we
felt like observers/visitors more
than old friends like we felt in
the other places. Not to overstate that point since thats more
frequently the case when you
travel, but we were so spoiled
by our previous destinations, so
that it was more noticeable. We
hear that Northern Thailand,
places like Chiang Mai, are the
real heart of Thailand, which we
did not make it to. Even so, we
would still recommend a stop in
Thailand, but best utilized as a
gateway to the less touristy parts
of SE Asia.

Bookends
By Artie Wallace

I personally have a collection

of books, some are collectors
editions, some are rare (over 100
years old) and some are personally signed to me by the authors.
Your collection of books may not
be the same as mine, but just the
same, they reflect your interests.
Why shouldnt your bookends reflect your interests as well?
Shopping around for the perfect set of bookends can be tough
and justifying the price once you
find them can be tougher. This
week lets focus on making our
own bookends.
First: Decide on a theme for
your bookends. This should be
something that reflects your interests.
Second: Choosing a figure for
your bookends. There are many
things to choose from, I recommend shopping on Ebay. You can
find mini busts, brass figures and

porcelain or ceramic figures all of

which have some weight to them
making them good for bookends.
You can choose to refinish your
figure or (if aged) leave it with the
aged look.
Third: Once you have your figure, you will need to make a base
for it. Driftwood works great for
a rustic look, for a more modern
look a finished base will look bet-

Page 43

ter. If your figure is large, youre

ready for step four. If you chose
a smaller figure you will need to
add a side to your bookend for the
books to rest against. Do this by
adding a piece of wood about four
to six inches high by the depth of
your base, secure it by pre-drilling
the holes and use wood screws. It
is always a good idea to secure it
before gluing.
Fourth: Finishing your base. For
driftwood make sure you have a
flat edge for the bottom. For store
bought wood, you may want to
decorate the edge using a router
or files. Then stain or paint your
base to the color of your choosing.
Apply a spray-on clear coat when
done with your base.
Fifth: Mount your figure to the
wood base using Gorilla Glue. If
your figure has a small area where
it will attach to the base, drill or
sand out an indent for it to lie in
before gluing (this will make it
more sturdy).

Greens, Cannellini
Beans, and Chicken
Sausage Pan Stew

By Sharon Feldman
Serves: 4
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 3-ounce chicken sausage (I used a
combo of apple and herbs)
1 medium onion, cut into wedges
1 15-ounce can cannellini beans, rinsed
and drained
2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 14-ounce can reduced sodium chicken
broth
12 cups chopped kale or baby spinach
(about 7 ounces)
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
In an extra large skillet heat oil over medium
heat. Add sausage and onion wedges;
cook and stir 10 minutes or until browned.
Remove from skillet and keep warm.
Add beans, thyme and garlic to the
skillet; cook 1 minute or until heated
through. Add broth; bring to a boil.
Reduce heat. Boil gently, uncovered, 5
minutes or until reduced by about half.
Gradually add kale or spinach, tossing
until wilted before adding more. Cook
and stir 2-3 minutes until tender. Return
sausage and onion mixture and add
the vinegar; heat through. Top with
additional thyme.

Rockaway Little League

ROCKIES NIP REDS IN SENIOR
THRILLER
Rain washed out last Sundays
slate but there was enough action
to go around on Saturday, highlighted by the J&E Industries Rockies extra inning win over the previously undefeated Slices n Ices
Reds.
The Reds had started the year
with Rockaway Little Leagues
best record (5-0) and were looking
to reach the halfway point of the
season untarnished. The Rockies
meanwhile dug an 0-2 hole early
on and were hoping to fight their
way back to .500. The J&E squad
had the advantage late but Slices
n Ices was not going to relinquish
first place easily. The Reds scored
two runs in their last at bat of regulation to tie the game. Then came
extra innings. In an emergency
relief appearance Christian Cook
pitched a scoreless 7th inning, giving the Rockies their chance. Sean
Byrne led off with a single. Dylan
Keegan next hit a double to move
the winning run to 3rd base. Two
outs later, Patrick Doyle delivered
the big hit to win the game 8-7.
The loss dropped the Slices n
Ices Reds into a virtual tie for first
place, percentage points behind
the 4-0-1 Henry Myers Plumbing
Diamondbacks who also slipped
from perfection by virtue of a 5-5
tie with the surging Pauls Bike
Shop Royals. The Shannon Florist
Pirates (3-1) are also in the thick
of things in the highly competitive
Pee Wee Senior division.

There were late inning heroics

in the Major Boys division as well.

The DriveSafe Auto Center Mariners made it a four-way race, topping the Contes Carpet Royals to
join three other teams at 3-2. The
DriveSafe squad had stalled after
the green flag, sputtering to a 1-2
start in 2016. Back-to-back wins
put them back in contention. The
Royals seemed to have the Mariners path blocked last Wednesday,
holding a 6-2 lead in the bottom of
the final frame. DriveSafe mounted a furious comeback to tie the
score 6-6. John Daudlin came to
the plate with runners on second
and third. A single would have
won it. His three-run home run
over the centerfield fence made it
a 9-6 walk-off win for the Mariners.
Anthony Ciappetta played a very
solid centerfield for the Ms. Sean
Peter Mullen and Peter Memoli
were DriveSafes pitchers. At the
plate, Daudlin went 4-5, Kiernan
Smith was 3-4 and Joe Palombo 2-4
for the victors. The Royals are also
in the first place logjam at 3-2.
On the distaff side, the Knights of
Columbus Hilltoppers (2-2-1) had
an exciting start to their season.
In their first game against the St.
Johns Episcopal Hospital Tigers,
the Tigers dominated early, scoring nine runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th
innings to the one run scored by
Hilltoppers Carianne Sconzo. The
Hilltoppers bats came alive in the
fifth inning with nine runs, including two homers by Colleeen Bambury and Jen Quagliariello. The
game was called at the end of the
fifth due to darkness, leaving the
score tied at 10-10.

Game 2 pinned the Hilltoppers

against the Graybeards Bonnies in
a tough game in which both teams
were held to singles and a few runs.
The Bonnies broke it open in the
fourth with seven runs for a 13-9
win. Great effort by all players! Next
up, we had the Hilltoppers playing
the Tigers again on April 18. The
game was low scoring the first two
innings with the Tigers on top 4-1.
Jackie Piccione was on the mound
for the first three and secured four
strikeouts and an assist. During
the 3rd and 4th innings the Hilltoppers bats livened up and running
picked up to give them 13 runs to
the Tigers 4. Mary Israel and Corrinne Connelly each hit doubles,
advancing runners. The Hilltoppers took a 17-10 win.
In their 4th game, the KofC gang
met the Stop and Shop Pandas.
The Hilltoppers came out fielding
and hitting from the start. Defensively, Jen Quagliariello and Colleen Bambury as pitchers and the
sure mitt of Corrinne Connelly at
first base held the Pandas at bay;
while the nice at bats of Lauren
Endall, Leah Meier and the 2-RBI
triple of Kallynn Schanstra rang up

the score. The Hilltoppers came

out on top with a 10-4 win!
The Hilltoppers are off to a great
start this season, both defensively
and offensively. Rockaway Little
League has brought in some great
opportunities for the girls leagues
including clinics and pitching clinics. Keep up the great work and
dedication ladies, theres nothing
like hearing from our RLL Alumni
that they are playing in H.S. like our
own Marie Elise Piccionne who
came to watch the tail end of her
sisters game and added that she
had hit a grand slam in her own
high school game that evening!
DIAMOND DUST: Photo Days
are coming soon. Look for an
email that tells the time slot for your
team. Order pictures in advance:
rockawaylittleleagueny.com/Photo_Day.html Friday, June 17 is
Rockaway Little League night at Citi
Field. Tickets for the Mets-Braves
game are $40 each. Everyone gets
a Mets t-shirt that night and all the
little leaguers get to go out on the
field prior to the game as long as
they wear their little league jerseys.
