When people think about suicide, they think about someone taking their life away on purpose, or in other words it
means, to kill yourself (Marcus 1). Suicide is a dramatic word that can change the way people view things in life. It is a
thought that brings a teen to the point of self-murder. It is an event where a young one feels desperation and pain just before
pulling the trigger or jumping off the bridge. Many of those who have thought about suicide or have committed suicide have
done so because their life has changed, and many are having difficulty adjusting to it. It is a time where everything seems to
go wrong, and a person starts to feel empty inside. It is like a mystery that could happen to young, old, rich and poor. The
only thing a person can do when there are signs of suicide is to prevent it from happening, but why is it that people turn over
to suicide, and how can a person prevent it from happening?
Being a friend to a suicidal person is the most important thing a person can do. Listen to what they have to say in
order for a friend to make a move. Listening to a suicidal person is very different from chatting with a non-suicidal friend.
Learning the dos and don'ts of dealing with a suicidal person may mean the difference between life and death. (Jacobs
80) When there are warnings of having a suicidal friend, never keep it a secret. Let others know what the problem is. Always
as questions that could give information. If the problem has been ongoing, remind the suicidal friend of other problems that
have been solved. Remind him or her of successes that turned out well in life. Always sound like there is care for a suicidal
person. Im worried about you and I want to help you or I understand, (78) can be some things that can be said. Always
arrange another time in which a get-together can be made. Dont just let go of a friend and keep in touch with them. Always
acknowledge the persons feeling of helplessness. You can say I can see how you feel. (Hyde 103) Taking some of these
questions, talk calmly, listen carefully and sympathize.
Peer counseling is a way in which many suicidal teenagers seek help from. Peer counseling in school is a way in
which many teenagers can get help from. Teens like to communicate with each other, because they know they will be
successful in helping each other out. Counselors can also help to recognize dangers signs, and could help stay alert to life
threatening situations. Getting this kind of professional help can create a good atmosphere for the person who has been
thinking about committing suicide. It makes the patient express his or her feelings freely, so that the intensity of those
feelings diminishes. Getting this kind of professional help causes the patient to go through many changes. A patient is there
to discover why they feel the way they do. Many patients discover that they are angry with someone in their life. Helping a
person prevent suicide can make a person feel good about them self. Virginia, who has thought about suicide at some point
in her teenage years, states that:

why they feel the way they do. Many patients discover that they are angry with someone in their life. Helping a person

teenage years. The only way people can prevent teen suicide is by helping respond to the thought before it is too late.
Preventing teen suicide involves many different things. It involves helping a friend walk their way out, peer counseling, or
getting the message out.
Some of these programs, however, are questionable because there is a controversy about whether or not suicide
prevention centers can actually prevent suicide. The overall study, however; is that suicide preventions centers may show
beneficial effects that will help diminish the rate of suicide in teenagers. These programs are especially designed for junior
and senior high schools. The best part about these programs is that they are designed to help a suicidal individual. Many
teenagers have committed suicide and there is nothing a person can do to bring them back. The only thing that can be done
is help others teens who have thought about suicide. There are usually warning signs of suicide, and people as a community
can always prevent a teenager from attempting suicide. It is always nice to see a firefighter save a person from a burning
building as well as to see a person helping their suicidal friend from dying.

"Blood is thicker than water", this idiom expresses the idea that family relationships are stronger and more
durable than friendship ties. This idea is reinforced through customs, traditions, and laws that give familial
relationships prerogative over non-familial ties and determine who may be defined as family. In fact this theme is so
pervasive in our society that, at times, it goes unrecognized for example; should a child's parents pass away all eyes
look to the next of kin or closest living relative. It is the same if there was a collection of debts that need to be paid.
The idea that familial relationships mean more than all other types of relationships. The fact that this idea is still
prevalent today, so many centuries later, leads the author to believe that there must be something fundamentally, or

qualitatively different about the relationships we have with family (mother, father, sibling), and those we have with
friends. If so, what is it?
Networks of family support tend to be denser than friendship networks ,creating a context in which
responsibilities toward family members develop .On one hand, family relationships are continued even if there is a
degree of animosity and conflict .Friendship, on the other hand, can be seen as an independent relationship that
tends to be based strongly on a sense of reciprocity. We therefore expect sibling relationships to be less strongly
influenced than friendships by these mechanisms.
By virtue of growing up in the same family, siblings know each other intimately and develop a body of shared
knowledge that may facilitate a common basis for social understanding. In 2005 Schaf, Schulman and Spitz found
that siblings provide emotional support for each other, resulting in reduced anxiety that can come with being an
outcast with peers. The sibling relationship has been shown to be increasingly valuable being as it has been found
associated with lower loneliness and depression and with higher self-esteem and overall life satisfaction. Also, sibling
support has been found to compensate when there is an absence of not only parental support but friendship support
as well.
Among the differences between these relationships are the expectations involved. In familial relationships
the emphasis is not on equality, balance, and reciprocity as is the case in friendships. However the sibling
relationship, not unlike the friend relationship requires maintenance by regular positive interaction, its does not remain
ready at all times to be activated whenever the need arises .The general everyday understanding of what family
entails is different from everyday understanding of what friendship entails. This does not mean that family and friend
relationships have no commonality, nor does it mean that people never regard friends as family or family as friends. It
does, however, suggest that different forms of unity and commitment usually differentiate the two sets of
relationships; specifically, the demands that family and friends generally view as legitimate to expect of each other
are usually patterned differently, including the consequent effect on the emotional, practical, and material resources
that they are prepared to give. A family is a group of people you're stuck with for life whether you like it or not.
Importantly, at various phases within the lifespan, the particular structural circumstances of people's lives
may result in both a greater reliance on friends and a reduced involvement with family .For example, for some young
adults who are establishing their independence from their family but not (yet) started their own, that is, involved in a
committed partnerships or a parental phase of life, friends may be the main component of their emotional and
practical support networks .At this time, they may have relatively little involvement with their family relationships.
Without necessarily rejecting these ties, their choice is to place more emphasis on friendships with others who may
be in a similar situation like unto themselves (Allen, 2008).

Living a healthier life can not only extend your life, it can also improve the quality. Feeling
physically better and having control over your own life can greatly increase your mental health as
well. Although there are some aspects of physical and mental health that are beyond an individual's
control, there are many things that people can do to improve their quality of life. Some things that
can help people reach this goal is nutrition and meal preparation, exercise and physical fitness and
maintaining regular check up's with doctors.
Our bodies, like cars, need fuel to run. And like cars, the quality of the fuel that we use can
affect our performance. Making sure that you are giving your body all the fuel it needs and the best
quality fuel you can will improve how your body runs and feels. Our "fuel" comes from food and the
nutrients that food provides. A number of government agencies in the United States (including the
Food and Drug Administration [FDA], Department of Health and Human Services, and Department of
Agriculture) have spent years researching proper nutrition and developing guidelines for food intake.
They have come up with seven general dietary guidelines for healthy adults. These seven general

guidelines are Eat a variety of foods to get the energy, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber you
need for good health. Maintain a healthy weight, This can lower your chances of having high blood
pressure, heart disease, a stroke, certain cancers, and the most common kind of diabetes. Choose a
diet low in fat and cholesterol; this can lower your risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer. A
diet low in fat can also help you maintain a healthy weight. Choose a diet with plenty of vegetables,
fruits, and grain products. These types of food provide needed vitamins, minerals, fiber, and
carbohydrates, and are generally lower in fat to help you maintain a healthy weight. Use sugar in
moderation, sugar has many calories and few nutrients and can contribute to tooth decay. Use salt in
moderation, this helps lower your risk of high blood pressure. If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so
in moderation. Alcoholic beverages supply calories, but little or no nutrients. Drinking alcohol is also
the cause of many health problems and accidents and can lead to addiction.
While having a healthy diet can improve your overall health, it is important to remember that
even healthy foods can sometimes make you sick if they aren't prepared properly. Foods that haven't
been cleaned, stored, or cooked properly can become home to bacteria and viruses that can make
you sick. Buy fresh products that have been stored properly. Many products such as dairy (milk,
eggs, yogurt, and cheese), meat, poultry, and fish have a 'sell-by' date printed on the label. Check
the sell-by date on products before buying -- stores should not be selling products that have expired
(and you should not be buying them) because it means the food may be starting to spoil. Similarly,
dairy products and meats should be stored in refrigerated or frozen sections to prevent spoiling.
Don't buy a product if it looks like it has been sitting out or doesn't appear fresh. When buying raw
fruit and vegetables, buy the freshest available and wash them before eating; Don't choose fruits or
vegetables that are starting to mold, and remember to wash them when you get home and before
you eat them. Even if your food comes from a store that is clean or in a package that says 'prewashed', you don't know who or what has touched them before you. Don't buy food, drinks, or
medicines if the packaging has been damaged. While a slightly crushed box of cereal may not be
cause for alarm, in general you don't want to buy packaged foods that have been damaged. Some
types of food, for example canned or jarred foods, may start to spoil if the can or lid is dented. And
sometimes people tamper with foods (or medicine) in the stores. A good rule of thumb is to never
buy something if the package has already been opened.
Exercising and staying physically fit are an important part of maintaining your health. Proper
exercise and fitness can improve your health in many ways. It can: Improve the health of your heart
and lungs (which lowers your chances of heart disease), Lower your cholesterol and blood pressure
(which lowers your chances of heart disease, stroke, and other chronic diseases), Maintain your
weight (which lowers your chances of heart disease, stroke, and other chronic diseases), Improve
your strength and flexibility (which makes daily activities easier and lowers your chance of
osteoporosis, broken bones, pulled muscles, and other injuries) and Improve your mental health (by
lowering anxiety and depression and increasing feelings of control and well-being). The type of
exercises you do and how often you do them can vary greatly from person to person, but all
healthcare professionals agree that exercise is beneficial to everyone's health. There are many
different kinds of exercise (walking, running, swimming, dancing, and weight lifting, to name just a
few), but three basic types of exercise. A good exercise program will include some combination of all
three of these types of exercise; Cardiovascular exercise improves and strengthens your heart,
lungs, and circulation and helps people lose weight. Cardiovascular exercise is any type of exercise
that raises your heart rate to a 'target zone' (determined by your age, weight, and health). Some of
the most commonly discussed types of cardiovascular exercise include running, aerobics, bicycling,
walking, and stair climbing, but could also include dancing, skating, skiing, martial arts, tennis, or any
type of exercise that raises your heart rate. Strength training helps you by making you stronger and
giving you better endurance (so you can do things longer). This makes day-to-day activities easier
and reduces your chances of injury. While many people think of weight lifting when they hear
'strength training', there are many different types of exercises you can do to improve your strength
(and you don't have to be a muscle-man or woman to do them.) Some common strength training
exercises include sit-ups, push-ups, and using nautilus machines, strength bands, and free weights.
Exercises that increase your flexibility give you greater range of motion in your joints and make your

body more supple, again, making day-to-day activities easier and reducing your chances of injury.
Many people do specific stretching exercises to increase their flexibility but other types of exercise
(such as dancing, yoga, and martial arts) can also improve flexibility.
"Prevention is the best cure" is a popular saying among healthcare professionals. This means that
the easiest way to get healthy is to avoid getting sick in the first place. While this is not always
possible, there are many ways to prevent possible future health problems and illnesses.
Having a healthy diet and exercise regularly can prevent very serious diseases like heart disease,
diabetes, high blood pressure, and strokes, to name a few. But there are many other ways to prevent
illnesses or stop illnesses from getting worse. A number of these can be listed, but these are by no
means the only ones. Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional for more ideas on prevention
and healthy living, especially related to your lifestyle and nutrition. Easy ways to stay healthy and
prevent illness is to eat well and exercise regularly and have a yearly physical with your doctor or
healthcare provider. This checkup should include checking your weight, blood pressure, listening to
your heart and lungs, and a general physical exam; discussing your lifestyle (exercise, diet), health
problems, and current medication; and answering any questions you may have about your health.
Healthy living is a combination of many things, including good nutrition, regular exercise and
a positive attitude. Taking care of your body and feeling pride in your accomplishments can improve
both your physical and mental health. There are many things you can do to improve your quality of
life - improving your diet and exercising regularly is two of the easiest steps. No matter how small
you start (adding an apple a day to your diet or walking 5 more minutes a day), you can make a
change and an improvement in your life

The National Environment Agency Pollution Standards Index (PSI) readings for the annual haze hailing from
Indonesia hit an unhealthy range of 111 yesterday morning at 7am. The detrimental effects that haze can have on a
person is dependent on his or her health as well as the duration and intensity of outdoor activity. Heres some ways
to protect yourself from this hazy onslaught:
Stay Indoors.Clearly one of the best ways to battle the health effects of haze is to avoid going outdoors. Stay
indoors as much as possible and shut the windows. Switch on the air conditioner if possible or use suitable air filters
and air purifiers to remove dust particles and contaminants in the air.
Avoid Strenuous Outdoor Activities.Minimise your duration of exposure outdoors. If you have to do outdoor
sports or exercises, try bringing your workout indoors or postpone it instead. Aerobic activities such as running,
cycling or playing football will require deep breathing and that would mean inhaling all the harmful pollutants in the
air. Those who have pre-existing chronic heart or lung conditions, or who are not feeling well should avoid going
out. Even if you do not have a pre-existing condition, it is still better to be safe than sorry as excessive exposure to
the miniscule dust particles can increase ones risk of developing viral and bacterial infections.
Wear A Mask.If you must go outdoors, put on a respiratory mask. Surgical masks or paper masks do not offer any
protection against the solid particles present in the air. An appropriate respiratory mask to combat the haze would be
the N95 mask, which is designed to filter airborne particles and protect wearers from inhaling the haze particles.
These respiratory masks are available at major pharmacies and supermarkets.
Hydrate Frequently And Increase Fibre Intake
Given that haze can irritate your throat, causing it to be dry or sore or even lead to coughing, it is essential to drink
up to flush away the toxins absorbed through the skin and lungs. Eating more fruits and vegetables that are rich in
vitamins A and C can boost your immune system. Foods rich in vitamin A include carrots, sweet potatoes and
spinach and are known to protect your eyes and lungs from air pollution. Foods rich in vitamin C like oranges, kiwis
and broccoli can promote lung tissue health and prevent you from catching the common flu.
Avoid Smoking
On top of the toxins present in the hazy air outdoors, the last thing you want to do is to further irritate your lungs
with cigarette smoking. Smoking will make your lungs more sensitive to the effects of air pollutants.
Pay Attention To Air Quality Updates
Check the local environment agencys website regularly for updates on the latest air condition. You can
visit NEA for live updates on the latest PSI readings to verify if the air quality is within a healthy PSI range.

Most students, when making career choices, will say I want something interesting. Your interests
have already influenced many of the choices made in your life: your choice of A-level and
degree subjects; the ways in which you spend your spare time; the holidays, and perhaps

the jobs, which you have taken during vacations. They may have been responsible for many
of the friends you have made and helped you to develop your personal skills. These interests
are likely to have a similar influence on your career.
For some people, an interest is of such importance in their life that it is the main influence on their
career choice. A gifted athlete, for example, may be able to use their interest and ability to
succeed in a sporting career. Many more people will be content to play their sport at a
recreational level, but will still take this interest into account when selecting a career or an
employer. Some may enter sports-related careers, in leisure management, sports
administration or promotion, retailing sports goods or teaching physical education. Others
will seek out careers in different fields that offer similar opportunities for physical activity,
teamwork, competition or challenge. Or they may simply choose between employers on the
basis of the company sports facilities.
