Mogul knocks Cruz from

race as Clinton stumbles in
Indiana
By CHRIS JOHNSON

In a nearly unprecedented event in
American political history, Donald Trump,
who has never held elective oce, all
but secured the Republican presidential
nomination after a resounding win in
Indiana this week that knocked his last
main rival, Sen. Ted Cruz, from the race.
Trump immediately sought to pivot
to a general election contest against
Hillary Clinton, criticizing the Democratic
frontrunner over trade and other issues.
After a campaign that consisted in

recent days largely of stoking fears about

transgender people using the restroom
consistent with their gender identity, Cruz
(R-Texas) dropped his bid for the White
House on Tuesday night.
Addressing supporters in Indianapolis,
Cruz announced hes suspending his
campaign after Trump badly beat him in
the Indiana primary.
With a heavy heart, but a boundless
optimism for the long-term future of our
nation, we are suspending our campaign,
Cruz said.
Although he was dropping out of the
race, Cruz spoke vaguely about continuing
his ght for liberty and the movement he
says he started. The former candidate
didnt say whether he would now support
Trump.

ANC to vote on
Whitman-Walker project
The
Logan
Circle
Advisory
Neighborhood Commission, ANC 2F,
was scheduled to vote Wednesday night
on whether to accept a recommendation
by one of its committees that WhitmanWalker Health scale back the size of its
proposed redevelopment of the site of
its Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center at
14th and R St., N.W.
Last week, Whitman-Walker and its
partner in the joint venture project,
Fivesquares Development, released
A rendering of the proposed
details for plans to convert the site
redevelopment of the Elizabeth Taylor
into a 155,000-square-foot, six-story
Medical Center.
structure that would include retail
shops and restaurants on the ground
oor, underground parking, 60,000
square feet of oce space, and at least 80 residential apartments.
Whitman-Walker, which would retain majority ownership rights in the project,
would use about half of the oce space for its community health programs,
according to Whitman-Walker spokesperson Shawn Jain. Whitman-Walker would
use its share of the revenue generated by the project to sustain and help nance
its longstanding mission as a community health center with a special outreach to
the LGBT community, Whitman-Walker ocials have said.
ANC 2F member Kevin Deeley, who chairs the ANCs Community Development
Committee, told the Washington Blade that after receiving a presentation on April
27 from representatives of Whitman-Walker and Fivesquares Development, the
committee adopted a resolution with recommendations that it was to present to
the full ANC meeting on May 4.
Deeley said the committees resolution supports the overall design concept
and endorses the projects plans for the historic preservation of the Elizabeth
Taylor building and a separate building on the site. Whitman-Walker purchased
the existing buildings and surrounding land in the early 1990s before the 14th
Street, N.W. corridor exploded into the bustling entertainment, retail and
upscale residential destination it has become.
They approved the general concept with a few reservations, Deeley said of
the ANC committee. They thought the concept was a little too monolithic, he
said, adding that the committee would like the project to be somewhat less
massive in size.
Since the project was designed to be within the size and height limits mandated
by the citys zoning restrictions for that section of the city, Whitman-Walker and the
developer do not need to apply for a zoning variance from the D.C. Board of Zoning.
What they do need is the approval of the D.C. Historic Preservation Review
Board, which is charged with making sure all new buildings in historic districts,
such as the 14th Street district, are designed in a way that they respect and
preserve the character of the district without exactly duplicating nearby
existing buildings, according to a HPRB pamphlet.
Under D.C. law, city agencies must give great weight to ANC recommendations,
but the agencies, not the ANCs, make the nal decision on a proposed project
such as Whitman-Walkers.
Andy Altman, managing partner of Fivesquares Development, who attended
the ANC committee meeting on April 27, said he was pleased with the committees
response to the project.
I actually thought it was a very positive meeting, he said. I thought it was a
good discussion. I thought the people were very supportive.
Altman said his development rm, Whitman-Walker ocials and nationally
known architect Annabelle Selldorf of New York, who designed the proposed
new structure, will take into consideration all comments and suggestions by ANC
2f and the Historic Preservation Review Board, which he said has already been
given copies of the plans for the redevelopment project.
There are modications that can be made to this design, Altman said. I think
well wait to get all the comments from the preservation oce and the preservation
review board and then look at what changes to make at that point, he said.
I think the fundamentals of the project in terms of its historic buildings and
the way of the architects concepts are very, very strong, Altman said.

The Furies Collective house has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

Furies house, N.Y. Stonewall

site set for historic recognition

The National Park Service on Monday added a row house on Capitol Hill used in the
early 1970s as headquarters for a lesbian feminist group called the Furies Collective to
its National Register of Historic Places.
The action makes the Furies house at 219 11th St., S.E. the nations rst national
lesbian-related historic landmark.
The announcement of the Park Service decision came a little over three months after
the D.C. Historic Preservation Review Board voted unanimously to add the house to the
D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites.
In a separate action, federal government ocials have disclosed that President Obama
was close to designating as a national landmark a mini park in front of the Stonewall bar
in New Yorks Greenwich Village and part of the surrounding neighborhood.
According to the Washington Post, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, National Park
Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis, and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) were scheduled to
hold a listening session on May 9 to obtain input on the proposal from local residents
and businesses.
Six days of rioting by LGBT customers at the Stonewall in June 1969 triggered by a
police raid on the bar are considered one of the key events leading to the start of the
modern LGBT rights movement.
We must ensure that we never forget the legacy of Stonewall, the history of
discrimination against the LGBT community, or the impassioned individuals who have
fought to overcome it, Nadler said in a statement. The LGBT civil rights movement
launched at Stonewall is woven into American history, and it is time our National Park
system reected that reality, Nadler said in a statement.
He was referring to Obamas reported plan to designate by executive action the area
surrounding the Stonewall as part of the National Park Service, possibly in June, in time
for New Yorks LGBT Pride celebrations.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and several New
York State lawmakers have expressed support for the proposal.

Gray accuser helped fund production of black gay novel

Indicted businessman
Thompson outed
in Post story
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Millionaire
businessman
Jerey
Thompson, who pleaded guilty in 2014 to
illegally contributing more than $650,000
to Mayor Vincent Grays 2010 election
campaign, quietly gave money to a project
to produce a musical play and movie
based on one of the gay-themed novels of
internationally acclaimed black gay author
E. Lynn Harris, according to an investigative
report by the Washington Post.
In an April 15 story based on newly released
court records related to the investigation into
Thompsons campaign contributions and
interviews with people who know Thompson,
the Post reports that Thompson invested in
an eort by his former friend and associate
Proteus Spann to turn Harris best-selling
novel Invisible Life into a Broadway musical
and feature lm.
The Post story also reports that court
documents the Post obtained through

a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit

and interviews with sources reveal
that federal prosecutors learned that
Thompson regularly gave money and
gifts to young men with whom he had
sexual relationships.
Among other things, the Post story says
Spann stated in an interview with the Post
that he was among Thompsons associates
who helped to arrange for young men to
meet Thompson and that Thompson has
long been a closeted bisexual man.
At the time Thompson pled guilty,
then U.S. Attorney for the District of
Columbia, Ronald Machen, disclosed
at a news conference that Thompson
told investigators that Gray was aware
of and cooperated with the illegal and
hidden campaign operation orchestrated
by Thompson. Machens disclosure
generated widespread speculation, in the
midst of Grays re-election campaign, that
Gray would likely be indicted on charges
in connection with Thompsons actions.
Machens revelations that Gray was
implicated in the campaign funding
scandal is believed by nearly all political
observers to be the reason for Grays
defeat in the November 2014 election.
Earlier this year, Channing Phillips,

who replaced Machen as U.S. Attorney,

announced the investigation into Grays
possible ties to the illegal campaign
activities had ended and no future
indictments would be forthcoming.
Thompson was among 12 people to
plead guilty to charges associated with
the investigation, including seven who
pled guilty to oenses directly involving
or connected to Grays 2010 re-election
campaign, according to U.S. Attorney
spokesperson William Miller.
The Post story reports that Thompsons
sex life surfaced in the investigation
because prosecutors were concerned
that Thompsons credibility as a witness
could have been seriously damaged if
Gray had been charged and brought
to trial. Investigators, who learned of
Thompsons ings with young men,
wanted to determine if any of them were
underage, the Post reports.
Spann and others told the Post that none
were, and that all of the men with whom
Thompson had relations were of legal age.
The Post story says Spann has not
spoken to Thompson since 2012, when
federal agents raided Thompsons oces
and seized documents linking him to
the then alleged illegal contributions to

Grays 2010 campaign as well as multiple

other campaigns for D.C. and federal
candidates running for public oce.
Spann said he was hurt to have been cut
o nancially and emotionally by Thompson
after the start of Thompsons legal problems.
In a 2013 interview with the Hollywood
Reporter, which reported on Spanns plans
to make a lm adaptation of Invisible
Life, Spann said Thompson appeared
to have withdrawn his nancial support
for the project after Harriss mother led
a lawsuit against Spann challenging his
legal right to Harriss novels.
According to the Hollywood Reporter,
an unnamed nancial benefactor to the
project was fearful of being linked to
the project through publicity generated
by the lawsuit. A court eventually ruled
in Spanns favor and conrmed he had
obtained legal rights to the Harris novels.
But Spann, who is African American
and bisexual, said he understands why
Thompson went to great lengths to shield his
personal life, the Post story reports. Spann
lamented what he said a gay or bisexual
black man still goes through, especially in
the nancial world, the Post story says.

Beloved drag performer Vicki Voxx dies

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

as an artist and performer were at the

core of what makes Arena what it is.
Jazz musician Aaron Myers, who met
Hill about seven years ago shortly after
moving to D.C., said Hills warm and
friendly demeanor and sincere interest in
those he knew made it easy for the two to
become close friends.
Myers said Hill was born and raised in
D.C. and attended the citys H.D. Woodson
High School.
He said he came to learn that Hills
persona as Vicki Voxx had long ago become
a legend in D.C.s drag community. In
addition to establishing close ties to fellow
drag performers, including Ella Fitzgerald,
Kristina Kelly, and the late Mame Dennis,
Hill was among the drag performers who
supported community causes.
At the time of the 80s and early 90s
it was the drag community that was
helping to raise money for those who
were dying of HIV/AIDS and who needed
assistance, Myers said. And they would
do these shows all over raising money for
the cause when the federal government
had not yet designed a system to oer
assistance.
Vicki Voxx played an important part in
those fundraising eorts, Myers said.
Kelly said Hill became part of the D.C.
area drag community more than 30 years

ago.
We became friends quite some time
ago, said Kelly. You know, the drag
family sometimes is the only family some
people have. We latch onto each other
because this world is sometimes very
dicult, she said.
He was a very good person. He did
hair and wigs for a lot of the people in our
community, Kelly said. He helped everyone.
Myers said he was moved by Hills
positive attitude when he visited him
in the hospital about a week before his
passing.
He was asking me how I was doing, said
Myers. He told me that he was not afraid
to die. He was fearless until the end.
But Myers said Hill told him something
a while ago while the two were watching
a drag show that hell never forget.
Myers noted Hill pointed out that the
drag performers, who were considerably
younger than him, were not moving
within the spotlight that was directed
onto the stage.
He said theyre dancing but theyre not
dancing in their light, Myers recounted.
He said if you can follow where the light
is you can really, really touch this entire
room. He said theyre really all over the
place but if they can get into that light
theyll be OK.
Added Myers, And I think thats what
hes done now. Hes found a new light and

hes sticking with it. Im seeing all of the

outpouring of love on his Facebook page.
I can only see how hes aected and left a

States and the world.

Trans woman stabbed to death in Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. A 16-year-old boy faces a second-degree murder charge in
the death of a transgender woman.
KAKE, a Wichita television station, reported the teenager allegedly stabbed
Tyreece Reecey Walker to death on May 1 in the apartment complex in which
she lived.
The teenagers mother reportedly told police her son told her that Walker
tried o sexually assault him.
That is completely 100 percent out of character for Reece, Walkers friend
told KAKE.
Reports indicate that Walker was a trans woman, even though the Wichita
Police Department referred to her by her birth name.
Walkers death comes 15 days after police found the body of Keyonna Monroe
Blakeney, a trans woman of color from D.C., inside a Rockville, Md., hotel. Zella
Ziona, another trans woman of color, was shot to death in Gaithersburg, Md.,
last October.

Hearing in the works for

fedl religious freedom bill
Measure would enable
anti-LGBT discrimination
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Congress has mostly stayed out of
the religious freedom ght as states
pass legislation allowing anti-LGBT
discrimination for religious reasons, but
that may soon change.
A U.S. House committee is planning a
hearing on the First Amendment Defense
Act, a religious freedom bill with the
purported purpose of preventing federal
government action against individuals
and businesses that oppose same-sex
marriage for religious reasons. Critics say
it essentially carves out a legal exemption
for anti-LGBT discrimination.
The legislation was introduced by Rep.
Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) in the U.S. House
and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) in the U.S. Senate.
M.J. Henshaw, a spokesperson for the
House Oversight & Government Reform
Committee, said the panel is working
toward a hearing on the legislation,
although no date has been scheduled.
A follow-up email on whether the
hearing was likely before the end of this
month wasnt returned. It remains to be
seen if a committee vote or consideration
on the House oor will follow the hearing.
Chaired by Rep. Jason Chaetz (R-Utah),
the House Oversight & Government Reform
Committee is packed with conservative
Republicans, including Rep. Steve Russell
(R-Okla.), who recently attached to a major
defense spending bill an amendment that
would undermine President Obamas
executive order prohibiting anti-LGBT
workplace discrimination among federal
contractors.
The anti-LGBT National Organization for
Marriage has been pushing for a hearing
on the First Amendment Defense Act in a
campaign it calls Fax for FADA. The eort
encourages supporters to sign a petition
in support of the legislation, which triggers
a fax sent to House Republican leadership
and the House Oversight & Government
Reform Committee. According to the
National Organization for Marriages
website, the petition as of Wednesday had
3,870 signatures.
Brian Brown, president of the National
Organization for Marriage, wrote in a blog

Word is that the First Amendment

having an impact!
Upon its introduction last year in an
attempt to counter the expected ruling
from the U.S. Supreme Court in favor of
same-sex marriage nationwide, the First
Amendment Defense Act is seen as an
attempt to make a carve out into that
decision without entirely overturning it.
Among other things, LGBT advocates
have said the legislation as introduced
would 1) permit a federal employee
to refuse to process tax returns, visa
applications or Social Security checks for
same-sex couples; 2) allow recipients of
federal grants and contracts, including
those for social services programs like
homeless shelters and substance abuse
treatment programs, to turn away
LGBT people; and 3) permit anyone
who believes they have been somehow
required by the federal government to
approve of married same-sex couples
to le a lawsuit and potentially receive
damages from taxpayer funds.
Roddy Flynn, executive director of
the LGBT Equality Caucus, said the
legislation is akin to controversial state
anti-LGBT laws recently enacted in North
Carolina and Mississippi, calling the
plannedhearingthe latest in a string of
attacks on LGBT people.
First North Carolina and Mississippi,
then the NDAA amendment, now a
hearing on FADA, some lawmakers are
determined to permit discrimination at
all costs, Flynn said.

Gay group sues Justice Dept. over anti-gay docs

Records sought on
Eisenhower purge
of gays in 1950s

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.

lchibbaro@washblade.com
The Mattachine Society of Washington,
D.C., an LGBT rights group, is suing the
U.S. Justice Department for the release
of documents linked to what it says
was a massive purge of gay and lesbian
employees of the federal government in
the 1950s and 1960s.
The group says in a statement that it
led a lawsuit on April 27 asking the U.S.
District Court for the District of Columbia
to order the DOJ to release all documents
linked to President Dwight D. Eisenhowers
1953 Executive Order 10450.
The executive order, among other things,
associated homosexuals with infamous,
dishonest, immoral, or notoriously
disgraceful conduct and asserted they
posed a security risk and were unsuitable
for federal government employment.
Executive Order 10450 legalized the
discrimination of homosexuals, the
lawsuit states. It is estimated 7,000
to 10,000 federal employees were
terminated for homosexuality in the
1950s alone as a result of the executive

order, according to Mattachine Society of

Washington, D.C.
The groups statement says its pro bono
attorneys with the law rm McDermott,
Will & Emery led the lawsuit exactly
63 years after Eisenhower issued the
executive order on April 27, 1953.
The lawsuit, led pursuant to the
Freedom of Information Act, is the
culmination of three years of delay and
government excuses for withholding
documents which the department has

identied and refuses to release, the

Mattachine statement says.
Among other things, the lawsuit
specically requests all les in the FBIs
possession created by and communications
to, or from, Warren Burger concerning
Executive Order 10450, it says.
It states that then-Assistant U.S. Attorney
General Burger, who later became
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was
designated by Eisenhower to implement
and enforce the executive order.
The lawsuit charges that DOJ ocials
incorrectly cited ve exemptions in the
Freedom of Information Act that allow the
government to refuse to release certain
documents on grounds that releasing
them could jeopardize national security,
breach condential government sources,
violate the condentiality of a grand jury, or
jeopardize law enforcement investigations.
On information and belief, the
requested agency records have been
improperly withheld in that the FOIA
requires their disclosure and they do
not fall within any of FOIAs exemptions
from required disclosure, including but
not limited to those exemptions cited by
defendant, the lawsuit says.
Court records show that the case has
been assigned to Senior U.S. District
Court Judge Royce Lamberth, who was
appointed by President Ronald Reagan.
Although Lamberth has been criticized for

siding too often with the government in

cases authorizing electronic surveillance,
he has also on occasion ruled harshly
against government ocials, according
to the Washington Post.
The Post has reported that in a case
where the Interior Department was accused
of repeatedly failing to account for money
owed to Native Americans, Lamberth held
two cabinet secretaries in contempt.
The Mattachine Society of Washington,
D.C. was co-founded by pioneering gay
rights leader Frank Kameny in the 1960s
as the citys rst gay rights organization.
After being dormant for many years,
gay rights advocate Charles Francis
played a lead role in reactivating the
group in recent years several years ago.
He currently serves as its president.
Francis and others working with him
have established the groups new mission
as one of archive activism aimed at
uncovering long hidden documents
showing how gays were persecuted by
the federal government in past years.
It is now time for the Department of
Justice to remove the seal from this dark
chapter of LGBT American history, Francis
said. This is a history that has been sealed
or destroyed for decades, he said. Our
federal government owes it to the untold
thousands of men and women whose
careers were destroyed to come clean and
produce these records now.

FDA targets LGBT youth in anti-smoking campaign

Ads to be placed in
social media, elsewhere
in 12 cities

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.

lchibbaro@washblade.com

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration

announced on Monday that it has
launched
a
rst-of-its-kind
public
education campaign to discourage
smoking among LGBT young adults.
The $35.7 million campaign, which the
FDA says is funded entirely by user fees
collected from the tobacco industry, includes
one of several videos placed on social media
in which actors portray LGBT people
including drag queens dancing in gay
bars while speaking out against smoking.
We know that LGBT young adults in
this country are nearly twice as likely to
use tobacco as other young adults, said
attorney Mitch Zeller, who serves as director
of the FDAs Center for Tobacco Products.
We want LGBT young adults to know
that there is no safe amount of smoking,

A new FDA ad campaign urges young LGBT

an event this week in Silver Spring.

Zeller said in a statement. Even an

occasional cigarette can have serious
health implications and lead to addiction.
In a description of the campaign on the
FDAs website and during a telephone
news conference on Monday, FDA ocials
said the videos are among a series of
paid advertising venues promoting a

tobacco-free message through print and

digital media as well as outdoor signs and
billboards in 12 major U.S. markets.
The campaign, which the FDA dubbed
This Free Life, intends to reach LGBT
young adults by appealing to their
shared values, similar life experiences and
common interest, the FDA statement says.
The statement says that based on
scientic research related to smoking, of
the more than two million LGBT young
adults in the U.S., more than 800,000
smoke occasionally.
The This Free Life campaign is
designed specically to reach the
occasional or social smokers in the LGBT
community to help prevent tobaccorelated disease and the loss of tens of
thousands of LGBT lives to tobacco each
year, the statement says.
Richard Wolitski, acting director of
the Department of Health and Human
Services Oce of HIV/AIDS and
Infectious Disease Policy, said during the
teleconference on Monday that ocials
decided to target LGBT young adults
between the ages of 18 and 24 because

research shows that age range to be

the period in which most LGBT people
come out to themselves and others
close to them. In response to a question,
he acknowledged that most people who
smoke started doing so at the age of 16
and sometimes younger.
Wolitski said other recently launched
FDA anti-smoking campaigns that target
all youth in the U.S. would likely reach
LGBT youth under the age of 18, including
many who dont identify as LGBT.
FDA ocials held a presentation
on the LGBT anti-smoking campaign
for D.C.-area stakeholders, including
representatives of LGBT organizations on
May 3 in Silver Spring, Md.
David Mariner, executive director of the
D.C. LGBT Community Center, and Sultan
Shakir, director of the LGBT youth advocacy
group SMYAL, said their respective
organizations would help to facilitate the
FDAs anti-smoking campaign. Mariner
said the D.C. Center has a long-established
seven-week Freedom from Smoking class,
which is oered at the Centers oces at
2000 U St., N.W.

Scant details on strategy

to conrm Fanning
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest
oered fewdetails Monday aboutthe Obama
administrations strategy to encourage the U.S.
Senate to conrm Eric Fanning as the rst-ever
openly gay Army secretary.
On the same day President Obama participated
in a round of TV interviews to encourage
Senate action on the nomination of Chief Judge
Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, Earnest
wouldnt say in response to a question from the
Washington Blade whether the administration
would employ the same strategy for Fanning,
whose nomination has been pending for nearly
six months since November.
The president certainly will continue to make
clear that he believes that Mr. Fanning would
serve with distinction as secretary of the Army,
ERIC FANNINGs nomination
Earnest said. Mr. Fanning is somebody that
for Army secretary remains in
limbo.
has extensive experience at the Department

of Defense, hes served in a number of roles
FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY
there, and he would bring that experience
and that judgment to the secretarys oce.
The president believes that he is exactly the right person for the job, and its
unconscionable for Republicans to continue to block his nomination for no good
reason.
In addition to serving in senior positions on the civilian side of each military
service at the Pentagon, Fanning prior to his nomination as Army secretary
was chief of sta to Defense Secretary Ashton Carter. Fanning also served as
acting Army secretary as his nomination remained pending, but relinquished
that position amid concerns occupying that role without Senate conrmation
violated the Vacancies Act.
Last week, Senate Armed Services Committee Chair John McCain (R-Ariz.)
tried to initiate a oor vote on the Fanning nomination, but was blocked
over objections from Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kansas), whos placed a hold on
the nomination purportedly over concerns about Obamas plan to close the
detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.
Earnest spoke broadly about the administrations commitment to Fanning
when asked for details on the strategy to compel Roberts to abandon his hold
on the nominee.
Obviously the White House has made a strong and eective case to Democrats
and Republicans in the Senate that Mr. Fanning deserves conrmation, Earnest
said. And well continue to make that argument on the merits to everyone who
continues to try to block his nomination.
On the Senate oor, Roberts cited a phone call he received from the White House
encouraging him to lift his hold on Fanning just prior to his exchange with McCain.
Earnest wouldnt comment on the content of that call or even conrm it occurred.
Im not privy to that phone call, Earnest said. I cant conrm that it occurred.
Were going to make a strong case on the merits that our national security would
be enhanced by the Senate conrming the secretary of the Army, particularly
when its someone as distinguished as Mr. Fanning.
Asked whether the administration thinks Fannings sexual orientation and
potential distinction as the rst openly gay Army secretary is a factor in the hold,
Earnest declined to comment.
I have no idea what the motivations are of Republicans to unfairly block the
nomination of a patriotic American to this critical national security post, Earnest said.
Although Roberts has said his hold is based on his desire for assurances
detainees from Guantanamo Bay wont be relocated to Ft. Leavenworth in
Kansas, the lawmaker reportedly received those assurances already in 2009
when he placed a hold on then-Army secretary John McHugh, prompting the
senator to lift his hold and allow the Senate to conrm the nominee.
Meanwhile, Roberts has an anti-LGBT voting record in the Senate, which consists of
no votes on Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal and the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act as well as support for a U.S. constitutional amendment that would have banned
same-sex marriage nationwide. The Kansas lawmaker received a 0 on the Human
Rights Campaigns most recent congressional scorecard.

Senate Dems seek action for trans students

Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Al Franken (D-Minn.) are leading a group of 40 fellow
Democrats in calling on the Obama administration to make clear that discrimination
against transgender students including for bathroom use is prohibited under
federal law.
In a letter dated May 2 to Education Secretary John King, the senators seek new guidance
spelling out discrimination against transgender students contravenes the prohibition on
gender discrimination under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.
In the face of ongoing legislative assaults on LGBT students, and transgender
students in particular, we remain concerned that the Department of Education has
not yet further claried that schools permitting discrimination against LGBT students
to continue unabated risk losing their eligibility for federal funds, the letter says.
Although the Department of Education has stated that Title IX covers gender identity
discrimination, including for single-sex classrooms and sexual harassment, it has not
yet provided specic guidance to schools on how these protections apply in the myriad
other circumstances experienced by transgender students in schools.
The senators make this request amid continued consternation over North Carolinas
House Bill 2, which prohibits transgender people from using the public restroom in
schools and government buildings consistent with their gender identity.
The letter cites a recent ruling from the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals determining
schools are required under Title IX to allow transgender students to use public facilities
consistent with their gender identity. Legal observers say the ruling is a blowto House
Bill 2 that renders the provision related to transgender students unenforceable.

New legislation would ban ex-gay therapy

Two Democrats Sens. Cory Booker (N.J.) and Patty Murray (Wash.) are taking
the lead in the U.S. Senate on legislation seeking to ban ex-gay therapy nationwide by
requiring the federal government to classify it as a fraudulent practice.
Booker and Murray along with 16 other Democrats introduced the Therapeutic Fraud
Prevention Act, which would classify the widely discredited practice as fraud, making it
illegal under the Federal Trade Commissions authority.
Booker, who last year introduced a resolution condemning ex-gay therapy, said in a
statement the practice is harmful, especially to children.
Our legislation will remove any question that the FTC and State Attorneys General
have the tools they need to classify conversion therapy as what it is fraud and ban its
use, Booker said. Conversion therapy is a discredited, harmful practice that has been
rejected by countless medical and mental health organizations for years. It has no place
in our society.
Major institutions, including the American Psychological Association, have come out
against therapy aimed at converting sexual orientation and gender identity on the basis
that it doesnt work and can harm the patient.
Murray said in a statement therapy aimed at converting a persons sexual orientation
is fraud, and it has no place in our country.
This bill would make it abundantly clear that the FTC can take swift action to put a
stop to this deceptive and damaging practice, Murray said. I will continue to push for
ways to make sure all people, regardless of who they are or who they love, are treated
equally and with respect.
The bill is companion legislation to a bill Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) introduced last year in
the U.S. House also seeking to ban ex-gay therapy throughout the country.

EFE reported Mariela Castro received an award on Tuesday from U.N.
Development Program Resident Representative in Cuba Myrta Kaulard that
acknowledged CENESEXs eorts to promote equality and combat genderbased violence in the country. Mariela Castro also said that delegates to last
months Cuban Communist Party congress in Havana acknowledged people
suer discrimination because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.
We felt that support for our work within the party was more explicit, much
clearer, Mariela Castro told Cibercuba, a Cuban website.
Mariela Castros supporters credit her with championing LGBT-specic issues
on the Communist island.
Mariela Castro, who is a member of the Cuban Parliament, has publicly spoken
in support of marriage rights for same-sex couples. She voted against a 2013 bill
against discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation because it
did not trans-specic protections.
Cuba has oered free sex-reassignment surgeries under its national health
care system since 2008, but independent LGBT rights advocates insist that only
a few dozen trans people have been able to undergo the procedure. Adela
Hernndez in 2012 became the rst openly trans person to hold public oce

Then-President Fidel Castro sent more than 25,000 gay men and others
deemed unt for military service to labor camps known as Military Units to
Aid Production in the years after the 1959 Cuban revolution. The Communist
islands government forcibly quarantined people living with HIV/AIDS in staterun sanitaria until 1993.
Cuban LGBT rights advocates who are not aliated with Mariela Castro and
CENESEX maintain that authorities routinely harass them.
The Cuban Foundation for LGBTI Rights and other independent advocacy
groups launched a campaign late last year that encourages Cubans to sign a
petition in support of marriage rights for same-sex couples. Those behind the
initiative have accused Mariela Castro and CENESEX of not doing enough to spur
lawmakers to act on the issue.

Campaign raises money for Indonesian group

A new campaign that began this week seeks to raise money for an Indonesian LGBT
advocacy group.
Alturi, a Los Angeles-based organization that seeks to promote further engagement
on global LGBT issues, on Wednesday announced the campaign in support of Arus
Pelangi.
The campaign seeks to raise $25,000 to fund Arus Pelangis emergency assistance
program which includes a safe house for LGBT rights advocates in the Indonesian
capital of Jakarta through the end of the year. The money would also help the
organization sustain its You Are Not Alone campaign, hotline and other initiatives

Alturi said in a press release that Arus Pelangis emergency assistance program will
run out of money at the end of this month.
OutRight Action International and Human Rights Watch have also joined the
fundraising campaign.
Arus Pelangi has provided a critically important voice for the LGBTI community in
Indonesia for more than 10 years, said Steve Roth, co-founder of Alturi, in the press
release.
Alturi announced its campaign in support of Arus Pelangi against the backdrop of
eorts to crackdown on LGBT rights advocates in the worlds most populous Muslimmajority country.
An Indonesian House of Representatives commission in March urged the countrys
Ministry of Communications and Information to consider a measure that would block
websites from promoting so-called LGBT propaganda. Those found guilty of consensual
same-sex sexual relations in the semi-autonomous province of Aceh face up to 100
lashes in public under a new penal code based on Sharia law that took eect late last
year.
Indonesian LGBT rights advocates in recent months have also expressed growing
concern over an increase in homophobic and transphobic rhetoric on the part of
political and religious readers.
Arus Pelangi Chair Yuli Rusinawati, who founded the organization in 2006, told the
Blade on Tuesday from Indonesia that she welcomes the campaign.
We greatly appreciate the support from the international community, which will
enable us to keep pushing forward with our work on multiple fronts, said Rusinawati
in the Alturi press release.

U.S. assisting Bangladeshis after attacks

The U.S. is oering assistance to Bangladeshis under immediate threat in the wake
of the murders of two prominent LGBT rights activists in the country.
State Department spokesperson Julia Mason told the Washington Blade on Monday
that the U.S. along with other governments and non-governmental organizations
has already assisted, or is in the process of assisting, numerous individuals we believe
are under immediate threat.
This includes, in some instances, relocating them and their families to safer locations
and providing medical assistance or dependent support, said Mason. We will continue
doing so moving forward.
A group of men linked to Ansar al-Islam, the Bangladeshi branch of al-Qaida, hacked
Xulhaz Mannan and Tanay Mojumdar to death inside an apartment building in the
countrys capital of Dhaka on April 25.
Mannan who worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development launched
Roopbaan, the countrys rst LGBT magazine that shares its name with a Bangladeshi
advocacy group, in 2014.
The murders of Mannan and Mojumdar took place two days after members of the
so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for the hacking death of Rezaul Karim
Siddique, a university professor, in the northwestern part of the country.
The Sunni militant group has also claimed responsibility for the hacking death of Nikhil
Joarder, a Hindu tailor who faced a blasphemy charge in 2012 for allegedly insulting
the Prophet Muhammad. Islamists in Bangladesh have killed nearly two dozen other
members of religious minority groups and secular academics, writers and bloggers
since early 2015.
A member of the Bangladeshi LGBT community who was inside the apartment
building when the attack against Mannan and Mojumdar took place told the Blade on
Monday that the murders sent a clear message to the countrys activists.
They are going to kill them one-by-one, said the LGBT Bangladeshi, who asked the
Blade not to publish their name because of security concerns. They started by targeting
Xulhaz Mannan.

Cruz drops White House bid; Sanders wins Indiana

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

In the weeks leading up to the Indiana

primary, much of Cruzs campaign was
focused on raising fears about transgender
people using the restroom in an attempt
to draw a distinction between himself
and Trump, who made (now reversed)
comments in opposition to North Carolinas
anti-LGBT law and said transgender people
should use the restroom they think is
appropriate for them.
Cruz pounced on Trumps remarks,
perpetuating the widely discredited idea
transgender restroom use amounts to
allowing sexual predators to use the
womens facilities. A black-and-white ad
produced by the Cruz campaign equates
transgender people using the restroom
to men using womens facilities, saying
its not appropriate.
On the campaign trail in Indiana, Cruz
indicated transgender women should
only use the bathroom at home and
avoid public facilities altogether. When
transgender personality Caitlyn Jenner
posted a video using the restroom in
Trump Tower and saying, nobody got
molested, Cruz said on the Sunday talk
shows the real danger isnt people who
are transgendered, but child molesters
seeking bathroom access under the cover
of non-discrimination laws.
Gregory Angelo, executive director of
Log Cabin Republicans, said the focus
on transgender attacks was the reason
for the candidates downfall, pointing
to Trumps victory among religious
conservatives despite Cruzs rhetoric.
Evangelicals made it crystal clear
tonight: They care more about jobs
and trade than some nonsensical
prattle about bathrooms vilifying the
transgender community, Angelo said.
Cruz had a history over the course of
the presidential campaign of demonizing
LGBT people. An outspoken opponent
of same-sex marriage, Cruz introduced
in the U.S. Senate a constitutional
amendment seeking to reverse the U.S.
Supreme Courts decision in favor of
marriage equality. After the court handed
down the decision, Cruz indicated it
should only apply to certain states and not
the entire country despite overwhelming
legal opinion to the contrary.
Throughout his campaign, Cruz said
hed ght for religious liberty, which in
the context of the Republican primary
is seen as code for enabling anti-LGBT
discrimination. The candidate highlighted
at events the stories of business owners
who were penalized under state law for
refusing services to same-sex couples out
of religious objections, saying anti-LGBT
individuals were in fact the victims.

Amendment Defense Act, religious

freedom legislation seen to enable antiLGBT discrimination.
Jay Brown, a spokesperson for the
Human Rights Campaign, said the Cruz
attacks on transgender people will
remain part of his legacy long after his
failed presidential campaign.
Ted Cruz has waged an ugly, bigoted
campaign against LGBT equality for
months. Cruz will be remembered for
spending the last days of his presidential
campaign shamefully trying to stoke
a dangerous brand of hate against
transgender people like me to score

political points, Brown said. Ted Cruzs

false attack ads and repeated smears
against us in the closing days of his
campaign were clearly rejected by voters.
Theres a lesson here Americans of
all parties believe LGBT people should
be protected from discrimination and
politicians who dont take note risk being
rejected at the ballot box.
Meanwhile, on the Democratic side,
Sen. Bernie Sanders won Indiana with
52.5 percent of the vote followed by
Clinton with 47.5 percent. The results
were deemed an upset because polls had
showed Clinton witha slim lead heading
up to the primary.
But after losses in the New York and
Acela primaries, Sanders needed wins
by staggering margins to overtake
Clinton in winning the Democratic
nomination much larger than what he
received in Indiana. On Sunday, Sanders
announced his plan going forward is
to compel unbound super delegates to
vote in accordance with primary results
in their states as opposed to backing
their candidate of choice, although he
admitted his path to victory is narrow.
According to Los Angeles Times,
Sanders told reporters his win in the
Indiana primary demonstrates hes not
yet out of the race and senses a great
deal of momentum.
We understand and I do not deny it
for one second that we have an uphill
battle in front of us, Sanders reportedly
said. But there is a path to victory,
although it is a narrow path.
Trump won the Indiana primary with
53.2 percent of the vote, a walloping
victory over Cruz, who obtained only 36.7
percent. Ohio Gov. John Kasich won 7.6

percent of the vote.

The victory means Trump can claim
at least 51 delegates and likely all 57
delegates up for grabs in the state.
The win also dashes hopes of political
observers the Republicans would proceed
to a contested convention.
In his speech after his win at Trump
Tower in New York City, Trump was clearly
headed toward the general election as he
laid into Clinton, whom he said would be a
poor president before citing a poll showing
he has a small lead over the Democrat.
Trump criticized Clinton for comments
she made about miners, saying she was
reducing them to numbers, and blamed
her for her husbands implementation of
the North American Free Trade Agreement
in the 1990s, which the Republican said
has devastated the country.
She doesnt understand trade, Trump
said. Her husband signed, perhaps in
the history of the world, the single worst
trade deal ever done: Its called NAFTA,
and I was witness to the carnage over the
last weeks especially.
Trump pledged to reverse the situation
by forcing U.S. companies to stay in the
country, saying outsourcing to other
countries has resulted in unemployment,
but thats not going to happen anymore.
Were going to bring back our jobs, and
were going to keep our jobs, Trump said.
Were not going to let companies leave.
Now, if they want to go to a dierent
state: Good luck, compete. But when they
start going to dierent countries that in
many cases are countries that devalue
their currency and make it impossible
for our companies to compete, thats not
going to happen, not going to happen,
and if they want to do it anyway, there will
be consequences, and there will be very
serious consequences.
Although Trump has built a reputation
for demonizing minority groups over the
course of his campaign, he sought to
reach out to black and Hispanic voters as
he reiterated his plan to build a wall along
the U.S.-Mexico border.
Were going to have unbelievably
great relationships with the Hispanics,
Trump said. The Hispanics have been
so incredible to me. They want jobs.
Everybody wants jobs. The African
Americans want jobs. You look at whats
going on, they want jobs.
Other goals Trump outlined in his
speech were eliminating the $19 trillion
national debt, getting respect from
foreign nations, defeating ISIS and making
sure people are going to be saying Merry
Christmas again.
Following Trumps win in Indiana,
Republican National Committee Chair
Reince Priebus took to Twitter to
declare the candidate the presumptive
Republican presidential nominee.

Baltimore mayors LGBT liaison dies

Demetrius Mallisham, the mayors liaison
to Baltimores LGBT community, died at Johns
Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore on
April 28 due to complications from pancreatitis. He
was 46.
Mallisham was born in Newark, N.J., and was
an Army brat living mostly in Ft. Belvoir, Va.
He earned a bachelors degree from Radford
University and had worked in various jobs. One of
those was in Prince Georges County where he was
trying to get gang members back on the right track.
Mallisham eventually moved to Baltimore and
served in the Mayors Oce of Neighborhoods.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake released a
statement on the day of his death. All of us who

being constantly upbeat, enthusiastic and eager to
help, she said. For someone who was not originally
from Baltimore city, he made Charm City his home. I
will never forget the number of times I joined a neighborhood event and saw him
joyfully interacting with community members and children. What a champion of
our city.
For his service to the LGBT community as the Mayors Liaison, he received an
award from The Center for Black Equity Baltimore in October 2014.
Working for Madame Mayor is a blessing that I dont take for granted,
Mallisham told the Blade at the time. She makes my job easy by being a true
ally to the LGBTQ community.
Mallisham was well liked within Baltimores LGBT community.
Demetrius was a good man. He was a bright soul always helping people and
willing to nd ways to help folks help themselves, Merrick Moises, a close friend,
told the Blade. His death is quite shocking. I am comforted by the fact that he
will always be loved and remembered for the light he carried with him and the
joy he gave to others. He will be missed so much.
His brother Mark Mallisham told the Blade that Demetrius was an advocate
for all people. His life mission was to help all people. He had a caring soul and
was the nicest person I knew besides our Mom.
A wake is planned for May 5 at 10:30 a.m., and the funeral is to take place at 11
a.m. at New Waverly United Methodist Church, 644 E. 33rd St., Baltimore 21218.

Sex habits inuenced by porn: study

NEW YORK Gay men who watch bareback porn are more likely to have
risky sex, according to a new study by Columbia University and Public Health
Solutions.
For it, 265 gay and bisexual men were surveyed after being recruited using
Facebook, and had all watched porn in the last three months and lived within 50
miles of New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia or Washington
According to the ndings, published in PLOS One, 92 percent of the men said
they had watched porn depicting bareback anal sex, and 70 percent of those
revealed that viewing it led them to re-enact what they watched.
Forty-eight percent said they believed watching bareback porn had contributed
to them engaging in riskier sex, while 55 percent said that watching the porn had
led them to seek sex afterwards. In contrast, the study found that men who
watched porn with actors that used condoms participated in safer sex, PLOS
One reports.
A mandate forcing porn actors to wear condoms has been passed by the Los
Angeles City Council. However this has caused a lot of the industry to leave the
city and lm elsewhere.

HIV rates down, but gays still being infected

BALTIMORE The number of new HIV infections and the transmission rate
in the United States dropped by 11 and 17 percent, respectively, between 2010
and 2015, but fell short of the goals set by President Obamas U.S. National HIV/
AIDS Strategy (NHAS), researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at
the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public
Health reported this week in the journal AIDS and Behavior by Science Daily.
In 2010, the NHAS set key targets for the reduction of HIV incidence (25
percent) and the transmission rate (30 percent) by 2015, in response to the
stubbornly persistent infection rate of approximately 50,000 per year.
From 2010 to 2015, the number of new infections decreased from 37,366 to
33,218, an 11.1 percent reduction, while the rate of transmissions decreased
from 3.16 to 2.61, a 17.3 percent reduction, the researchers reported. Over the
same period, estimated all-cause mortality decreased from 17,866 to 16,085,
while HIV prevalence increased from 1,181,300 to 1,270,755 persons living with
HIV.
Perhaps most challenging is that disparities persist at each stage of the
HIV care continuum. For certain populations, namely gay men, young people,
transgender people, the African-American and Hispanic communities, and
those who live in the southern U.S., the gains of the last ve years have not been
distributed equally across all communities. For gay and other men who have sex
with men, the epidemic may even be worsening, researchers said.

Gay, trans suicide rates higher in Colo.

DENVER Colorados suicide rate, one of the highest in the country, is climbing,
with 19.4 suicides for 100,000 residents, according to data released Tuesday
from the Colorado Health Foundation. Gay residents are disproportionately
aected and transgender residents contemplated suicide at nine times the rate
(36 percent) as the overall population (4 percent) in 2014.
There were 1,058 suicide deaths in the state in 2014, the Denver Post reports.
Thats up from 16.5 suicides per 100,000 residents in 2007. The new data
reveals men are three times more likely to die by suicide compared with
women, and rural residents are more likely to die by suicide than their urban
counterparts.
The report, Data Spotlight, Mental Health in Colorado: Working to Close the
Disparity Gaps, also found:
478,000 Coloradans are struggling with mental health issues.
Coloradans who are gay or bisexual are two to three times more likely than
heterosexual peers to experience poor mental health, with nearly 60 percent of
LGBT high school students reporting poor mental health.
There is little dierence in the rates of poor mental health by race, but data
shows blacks and Hispanics are less likely to receive help from a mental health
professional. Just 7 to 8 percent of those minorities receive professional help
compared with 13 percent of white Coloradans.

Eroding trust in D.C. govt

Youth Investment Trust is an
embarrassment

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

The D.C. Children & Youth Investment

Trust Corporation (CYITC) was formed in
June 1999 as an independent 501(c)(3) organization to link public and private resources
committed to addressing the long-term
needs of children, youth and their families
in the District of Columbia. According to its
original mission statement, Its goal was to
create alliances fostering strategic and effective investment in children and youth, to
ensure high quality programs and services
for every child in D.C. and to create mechanisms to evaluate the eectiveness of our
eorts. Unfortunately it went sadly o the
tracks. The most egregious example was
the money stolen by former City Council
member Harry Thomas Jr.

In 2012, according to the Washington

Post, A solemn and weary Harry Thomas
Jr. stood before a federal judge Thursday
and blamed a sense of entitlement for
his having used his former position as a
D.C. Council member to steal hundreds of
thousands of dollars intended for youth
programs. U.S. District Judge John D. Bates
then imposed a sentence of three years
and two months in prison, the most severe criminal sanction ever given a local
elected ocial in the District.
Recriminations continued and in 2013
the Washington Post quoted Diane Bernstein, the Trusts founding vice chairman
saying, We were reaching for the stars
here, and we were doing it. Only when the
policy people stepped in did things start
to go downhill. In 2007, Adrian Fenty (D)
took oce as mayor and replaced Bernstein and then-Chair John W. Hill Jr. with
his own people. Bernstein said, What was
originally intended to be an independent
grant-making organization evolved into a
means for political appointees to funnel
money to pet projects.
Looking at the Trust over the years Bernstein was right. There was never appropriate oversight and the board didnt take
responsibility for what was happening. As
a non-prot CEO for more than 35 years I
E DIT OR IA L C A R T OON

can only see the problems with the Trust

as outrageous, inexcusable and maybe
criminal. My hope is there will be an indepth audit of all the Trusts programs
and funds with sta and the board held
responsible and criminally charged if that
turns out to be appropriate.
But the problems with the Trust should
be a warning to all future mayors and others responsible for oversight of taxpayer
funds that close monitoring of organizations entrusted to doling them out is
crucial. When the city works with a nonprot to which they have a role in appointing board members they must ensure
those people understand non-prots. It
isnt enough to appoint someone with a
big name if that person doesnt have the
knowledge, time or willingness to be integrally involved.
There are other organizations in the District that hand out funds to various nonprots and we need to make sure they
have reporting requirements in place and
a board and sta that understand nances, and can read a budget and expense
report.
One example of another such organization in the District is the D.C. Commission
on the Arts and Humanities. It distributes
District money to many small groups and
it is important to look at how it operates
to make sure this embarrassing disaster
at the Trust isnt repeated. The boards of
these organizations should have a nance
and audit committee. Their sta must understand the board is entitled to see and
review all budgets, income and disbursements, and not just after the fact.
The city should take a much bigger role
in helping non-prot organizations receiving taxpayer funds and insist their board
and sta receive training on what their responsibilities are. Too often these boards
are made up of people dedicated to a particular cause and wanting to do a good job
but not having the experience to do it. It
is not enough to give mayoral appointees
to boards and commissions ethics training, which I understand they get, but they
need training in the requirements of the
job they are being asked to do.
There is a responsibility that anyone
entrusted with spending public funds has
and that is to do it responsibly and always
be able to justify how it is used. People are
generous and most taxpayers dont resent
paying their fair share as long as they know
it is being used appropriately. The kind of
activity that went on at the Trust, be it just
inept or criminal, erodes the public trust.

Confronting racism at Yale and other universities

Naming buildings after slave
owners raises controversy

KATHI WOLFE, a writer and poet, is a regular

contributor to the Blade.

Hope is a song in a weary throat, the

iconic civil rights activist, lawyer, friend of
Eleanor Roosevelt, National Organization
for Women co-founder and poet Anna
Pauline (a.k.a. Pauli) Murray, wrote in her
poetry collection Dark Testament and
Other Poems.
Ive been thinking of Murrays stirring
words since learning that Yale University
has just named one of its two new residential colleges after Murray. As a Yale
Divinity School graduate, Im thrilled that
Yale has honored Murray, the rst African-American to graduate from Yale with
a doctorate in judicial science (in 1965).

This is the rst time that Yale has named a

residential college after a woman and/or
a person of color. Thats the good news.
My heart sank when, at the same time,
I learned that Yale, after decades of impassioned controversy and protest, has
refused to rename its residential college
named for John Caldwell Calhoun, a leading slavery advocate, seventh United States
vice president and an 1804 graduate of
the university. In announcing this decision,
the Yale Daily News reported that Yale
President Peter Salovey said that keeping the name would help the community
to remember one of the most disturbing
aspects of its history. Removing Calhouns
name obscures the legacy of slavery rather
than addressing it, Salovey said.
As a white woman, I couldnt and
wouldnt try to talk about this as a person
of color. My family owned no slaves, Im
queer, low-income and female. But, no
question, I have white privilege. I agree
with Salovey: We should remember, not
obscure, our history especially, its
most hideous aspects. Yet, doesnt naming a building after someone honor that
person and that persons history? How
is naming a residential college after Cal-

houn not honoring his legacy?

Nonetheless, as Patricia Bell-Scott, author of The Firebrand and the First Lady:
Portrait of a Friendship: Pauli Murray, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Struggle for Social Justice, wrote me in an email, Yales
honoring Murray is an important step.
The decision ... came in response to student protest and heated discussion about
the symbols of slavery and institutional
barriers in keeping with Murrays legacy,
said Bell-Scott, who is African American
and Professor Emerita of Womens Studies & Human Development and Family Science at the University of Georgia. She agitated all her life for human rights and she
always saw her work in historical context.
Murray, who lived from 1910 to 1985
and who had a long-term relationship
with a woman, spent her life ghting what
she called Jim Crow and Jane Crow.
Her work for social justice included, as
a Howard University student, organizing sit-ins against eateries that wouldnt
seat people of color; crafting the legal
strategy that ensured that sex discrimination was included in the Civil Rights Act;
and becoming one of the rst women to
be ordained as a priest by the Episcopal

Church in 1977.
Murrays commitment to justice became personal to me when I recently
spoke to my friend, the Rev. Joan Forsberg. Forsberg told me that, in the 1960s,
Murray helped her (then) husband, the
Rev. Bob Forsberg. Bob was doing urban
ministry in New Haven. A white landlord
was unfairly evicting a black woman from
her apartment, she said. Things escalated and he called on Pauli Murray for free
legal counsel and she was immediately
responsive, she said.
Playing what if with history is tricky.
Who knows what someone from another
time would do if they lived today? Yet, I
cant help but think that Murray would
applaud, support and join in the protest
and discussion now taking place at Yale
(and many other universities nationwide)
over the naming of buildings for slave
owners and racism on campuses.
Murray was in continual dialogue
about how to create a humane and loving
community, Bell-Scott said.
Lets honor Murray by carrying on this
dicult, but essential dialogue by working for justice with all our heart and
soul.

to use their bathrooms at home. Is he shilling for an adult diaper company? His absurdly impractical suggestion would create
problems where there are none, just to fabricate dangers that can only be allayed by
voting for him. Luckily he is far scarier and
creepier than the people he is demonizing,
who just want to pee. I am more concerned
by people not washing their hands.
Liberty Counsel President Anita Staver
pledges to bring her Glock to the restroom.
The right has always had its vanguard of
women holding back the tide. On the other
hand, Wonkette defended Clinton on April
29 with an article titled, Dear Salon, Set Your
Dick On Fire And Eat It. This, if perhaps un-

derstandable, was a needless provocation.

The bathroom bills appear to be informed by old Alfred Hitchcock thrillers.
When even Fox News talking heads call
them a solution without a problem, and
corporate titans hammer states that
rushed the bills through, you know the
wingers misjudged the moment. They
spend too much time in their treehouse.
People who do not t traditional gender roles have always existed; they were
just socially invisible. Women have always
had as great a range of talents as men.
Why should conservatives get away with
sowing rancor just because they want
to erase the diversity all around them in
hopes of retaining unmerited privilege?
Years ago at a Mautner Project dinner
at the Wardman Park Hotel, the mens
room had entrances on both sides, making it a convenient shortcut to the lobby.
As I stood at a urinal, a group of women
dressed to the nines entered and asked
if I minded if they came through. I dont
mind if you dont mind, I said, which as
far as I recall is the only time I touched
myself while speaking to lesbians. They
passed through without incident. And
this is more than any nondiscrimination

ordinance calls for.

I am supposed to feel threatened by the
prospect of brazen women and trans folk
laying siege to the powder rooms of the
patriarchy, but if anything I am relieved.
I have used gender-neutral bathrooms at
LGBT lm festivals without any problems.
Granted, I was disappointed to learn that
womens rooms werent the luxe lounges
portrayed in old movies like The Women
and All About Eve, where you could linger to chat, x your makeup, and wittily
blackmail one another. But what facilities
do you expect for your 12 bucks?
We can laugh, but the Pajamahedeen
clatter away from behind pseudonyms
as they spread gender panic and spew
whatever epithets they are calling Hillary
this week. If she is as evil as they say, they
better hope she doesnt track them down
from their IP addresses and GPS devices.
But come next year, she will be too busy
dealing with the likes of ISIL to worry
about amateurs. This November, if we
stay awake, the juvenile jousting will fall
limp as the nal glass ceiling is shattered.
Go ahead, call me names.

The real story behind NAPWAs collapse

Justice not served by sending
Oldham to prison
By JUDITH BILLINGS
Having bitten my tongue at the advice
of Frank Oldhams attorneys as we waited
for justice to prevail, I, as one of NAPWAs longest serving board members,
am nally able to set the story straight
regarding how we concluded we had no
choice but to close the doors on the rst
national AIDS organization, whose genesis was the Denver Principles.
I joined the NAPWA board in 1999, invited by Teri Anderson, interim executive
director, and served until 2012. I am a
married, heterosexual white woman, living with AIDS, mother, grandmother and
great grandmother. I chaired the committee in 2005 that hired Frank, served as
board chair for his rst two years and on
the executive committee for the remainder of his tenure.
Frank and I worked closely together
to bring NAPWA out of a $250,000 decit and into a nancially positive position. Frank was a passionate, relentless
fundraiser for NAPWA, using many deep
relationships he had developed over his
long and distinguished career, on behalf
of those living with AIDS. He is a warm,
gentle, consummate professional. Under his leadership NAPWA was able to
struggle through the crushing downturns

of 2008-2010 and maintain clean audits

throughout his tenure.
Frank is a trusting soul who tries to see
the best in all people, and in the last couple
years recommended to the board the membership of several people who, in retrospect,
did not have the best interests of NAPWA
and its constituency at heart. It didnt help
that the three chairs who followed me all
resigned during their tenures, leaving us
the last few months with a new chair who
was unable to control some members who
consistently disrupted board meetings,
shouted, yelled obscenities at other board
members, and made it impossible to conduct meaningful business.
In the spring of 2012, Frank told members of the executive committee he
would like to resign from his position, effective Dec. 31, 2012, staying with NAPWA
as its fundraiser. He suggested young
leadership would be a plus, ideally a gay,
African-American male representing one
of the populations hardest hit by the
epidemic. Our board chair, who was just
such a person, agreed he was willing to
ll that role.
In the fall, the executive committee
proposed the plan to the full board during a conference call, believing it provided
for a smooth leadership transition with a
known quantity. The call exploded into
invective, screeching obscenities from
the several disruptive members who disagreed. As a result, the board had no opportunity to discuss the advantages of the

plan, and was thrown into its nal chaotic

months with a deeply divided board and
dwindling resources.
Upon receiving an unexpected dismissal letter, Frank asked to talk with
the board, but was denied that chance.
Not only was Frank barred from speaking with the board, he was denied access
to his oce to take his personal belongings. To this day, he does not know what
happened to the years of mementos he
cherished pictures of him with friends,
political gures; items he had collected
during his travels; his own personal records.
Being summarily dismissed and denied
a board hearing, Frank unfortunately reacted by availing himself of what he believed he was owed in salary, vacation
and sick leave. His action was not preplanned, an embezzlement scheme, or
any intent to take other than what he felt
he had a right to.
The matter could have been quickly
settled by asking Frank to repay the approximately $11,000 in question which
he has done and moving on. Instead,
several of the disruptive board members,
led by one in particular, continually pressured the Maryland States attorney to
indict Frank. And contrary to the pre-sentencing investigators recommendation
that Frank be given only supervised probation, at least one former board member petitioned the judge to add jail time,
saying it would be in the best interests of

the HIV community. Poppycock! The sentence has been decried by many in the
community.
The former board member who appeared at the sentencing hearing, reading the victim impact statement, had
been on the board less than a year, never
served on the executive committee, and
did not represent beliefs or views of we
who suered through the obstructionist
tactics that characterized NAPWAs nal
year. The person was shaking as he read
the statement as he should have been,
knowing how disingenuous and self-serving it was.
Justice was not served by impugning
the integrity of Frank Oldham, Jr. a true
warrior in the continuing battle against
HIV/AIDS. We who love and respect him
will continue to work for a reconsideration of his sentence with the hope we can
quickly return him to continue his tireless
eorts on behalf of the HIV/AIDS community.
A petition has begun urging reconsideration of Oldhams sentence; you
can sign it here: ipetitions.com/petition/
in-support-of-frank-oldham-jr-a-signedpetition.

The glories of gay camping

Cool Ranch Doritos, canned
beer and no cell reception

BROCK THOMPSON is a D.C.-based freelance

writer. He writes regularly for the Blade.

Recently, I went camping with a group of

gays in the middle of what I was told later
was Maryland.
I havent been camping since at least the
seventh grade. That was back in Arkansas when I had my brief irtation with the
Boy Scouts. We met in the basement of a
Methodist church. I was initially drawn to

the neckerchief, knee-high socks thing, but

Troop 71 bordered on the paramilitary side
of things. I assumed being prepared was
knowing how to whip up a quiche for unexpected company, not how to trap and skin
wild animals. So I decided that pleated green
shorts werent for me, and I didnt make it
past the pussy willow badge.
Needless to say, camping left a sour taste
in my mouth. But I thought Id give it another
try. And just in time for my friend Lukes biannual camping trip, comprising 25 rather
ab-y and aable gay boys, and me with my
shirt on.
We started out Friday afternoon and after some driving stopped at a liquor store in
rural Maryland. This is where I saw my rst
Confederate ag in a long while. But it was a
sticker in the shape of a heart and attached
to a Volkswagen bug, so I wasnt exactly sure
what message I was supposed to take away
there. But the liquor store did sell ros in a

can, so I considered it a win overall.

Saturday we went to the river. Before this,
we had to secure the campsite and store the
food in case bears came. Once at the river,
most of the boys coupled up in canoes. I
was given what the boat company labeled
the singles kayak and o we went for a
six-hour cruise. The weather cleared and we
got incredibly tipsy. Once done, I returned
my single-shaming vessel and walked to the
nearest gas station, which also doubled as
the towns pizza parlor. There I was oered
a ride to Morgantown. I thought this was
either reective of the nicest of rural Americans, or how horror movies start. Either way
I politely declined.
The next morning, we were full up on gossip and snack foods and headed back to the
city. But not before stopping at a popular
breakfast spot down the road where the
waitress asked if we were there for the Donald Trump rally.

Once back in the city, I reected on all

the things that I found glorious about gay
camping. I did enjoy that fact that one can
do things as a gay camper that would have
him quickly shunned as gay urbanite, such
as eating Cool Ranch Doritos with abandon
and drinking a box wine that was simply
labeled red. I also a drank a lot of canned
beer, which gays usually rank alongside that
of your canned meats. But not during gay
camping. Essentially, gay camping weekends with friends allow us a certain stepping away from intricate social customs of
gay city life, while at the same time we are
reminded of the important things indoor
plumbing, automatic coee makers, and living in a Democratic bubble.
That and theres a certain value in stepping away, getting muddy, and having no
cell reception for a few days.
And one day, maybe I will get that ride to
Morgantown.

Biking saved my life literally

4 years, 5 rounds of chemo
later I returned to D.C. streets
By ANNIE LIPSITZ
In my early 20s, I rode my bike everywhere. I rode in the pea soup heat that is
D.C. in August. I rode throughout the winter, numb ngers and all. Wind became
my least favorite weather element, but I
persevered.
Then, out of nowhere, at the age of 27,
I was diagnosed with leukemia. Suddenly,
all the things that had made up my daily
life were gone. I had to give up fresh vegetables, hugs, dance parties, staying awake
past 8 p.m., and, sadly, riding my bike.
(You cant really pedal your way around
D.C. while attached to an IV pole).
And maybe some of those things seem
easy to give up when your life is on the
line. But what if its exactly those things
that make you feel alive? Biking around
D.C. made me feel alive.
I had decided early in my treatment
that I would survive. Not surviving was
never an option. But I was never sure that

Id be able to ride my bike again. What if

my now untrustworthy body just wasnt
up for it?
Thankfully, that wasnt my fate. Eventually, I started riding again. But only inside
on a trainer in my mothers basement.
And while riding inside allows you to
watch endless reruns of Americas Next
Top Model, it doesnt have that same feeling of freedom and exhilaration as ying
down the 13th Street hill from Columbia
Heights to U Street. Riding inside helped
me feel stronger, but not as strong as I
wanted to be. I wanted to be able to ride
back up that hill I had just own down.
It took four years, ve rounds of chemotherapy and two bone marrow transplants, but I was nally allowed to ride my
bike outside in the streets of D.C. On that
rst ride, I was gleeful. I made up errands
to run and friends to visit just to make it
longer. Everything felt familiar. The ip of
my pedal to position my foot. The comforting click of my u-lock. The rush of cool
air as I descended the hill to my house. It
was one of the best rides of my life.
After that, I decided to do something I never thought I could do. Ride my rst century.

electrolyte replacer I could nd. I bought

my rst clipless pedals and fell over more
times than Id like to admit. I still wasnt
sure I could do it, but I had to try.
It took me 7 hours and 52 minutes to
ride 102 miles and cross the nish line of
my rst century. It was almost better than
beating cancer.
On May 22, D.C. is clearing the streets
for the rst-ever D.C. Bike Ride. Thousands of riders will cruise a blissful 17
miles through a car-free D.C., while I hope
experiencing even a fraction of the joy I
feel while on my bike.
Ironically, Ill have to miss D.C. Bike Ride
because Ill be at my twice-yearly check
up with my oncologist. But now I can walk
into that appointment knowing that Im
healthy and strong and that hundreds of
my pals in D.C. just spent the day pedaling around our city, smiling, and feeling
alive!
Join the ride today at DCBIKERIDE.COM.
Join the D.C. Bike Ride on May 22.

GAY MENS CHORUS CELEBRATES MILESTONE WITH KENNEDY CENTER CONCERT

By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
For this weekends 35th anniversary
concert of the Gay Mens Chorus of
Washington, Artistic Director Thea
Kano wanted to shake things up. Shes
steering the 220-member choir slightly
out of its comfort zone by performing
the 25-movement Latin work Carmina
Burana.

Although she says there was no

grumbling about the Latin or the
daunting music written 80 years ago
by Carol Or she says its been a good
chance for the chorus to prove its musical
mettle. The New York-based Gallim Dance
will join with choreography and members
of the New York City Master Chorale,

another choir Kano directs.

We dont usually perform these
sort of larger-scale oratorios, so its a
departure and a chance to show o
our musicianship, Kano, in her 12th
season with the chorus (her second at
the helm), says. Its not unusual for
Carmina Burana to be choreographed

but usually at least the times Ive seen

it its been very boy-meets-girl. Ours
will show same-sex relationships but also
romantic relationships as well as familial
relationships and platonic relationships
as well. The dances seek to remove

SARA MINDEL
How long have you been out and who
was the hardest person to tell?
Ocially I have been out since my rst
major break up in college. Growing up in
D.C., I never felt that I needed to be out
but now looking back I think that was a
bit of a cover. Although I can say I have
never really been in. The hardest people
to tell were surprisingly my parents.
Despite the fact that I was surrounded
with LGBT folks my whole life and they
were pretty liberal, I think parents are
always the toughest.

Mothers Day is this weekend and its a year for change for Sara Mindel.
Now divorced, she and her ex will join their 7-year-old son Alexander for a
super-duper Moms dinner with both moms.
It should be fun, the 38-year-old D.C. native says. He loves being with all
of us together. Of course divorce is hard and complicated with a kiddo, but
we always work it out and I have an amazing community. This kid has a lot
of love.
Mindel, a psychotherapist whos also on the Rainbow Families board, says
LGBT families should decide whats important to them and create their own
traditions that work.
Truly I love celebrating most things but also I think it is so important to
remember that Mothers Day was created and maintained by capitalism and
is truly a Hallmark holiday, she says. One does not dictate the value of a
mother, a family or a child in any way. We do that for ourselves and our loved
ones who deserve it.
Mindel returned to Washington after stints in Philadelphia and Boston
for school. She lives in Bloomingdale and enjoys yoga, hiking, camping and
crosswords when I get a chance.

Whos your LGBT hero?

Bayard Rustin, an amazing man who
worked toward the greater good and
never lost himself. Ellen for living boldly
and letting us watch her story as it
unfolded, always staying true to her
authentic self. And Kaitlin Ryan for her
fantastic research on LGBT youth and
family acceptance allowing the focus
to be on how we embrace and treat
marginalized people.

Whats Washingtons
best nightspot, past or present?
Chaos or Liquid Ladies from back in the
day! But now Im a mom, so if I go out, I
go out more with friends than to party.

Describe your dream wedding.

I would say that my own wedding was
pretty great. It was a beautiful day out in
the mountains with all of our family and
friends.Regardless of where I am now, I
wouldnt take that back for the world!

What non-LGBT issue are

you most passionate about?
Creating a more compassionate and
empathetic society and children. As a
therapist who specializes in trauma, its
easy to see how corrosive judgment,
shame and trauma are to the human
condition and society. I believe in raising
boys to be compassionate and kind and
girls to be strong and bold, and viceversa of course.

What was your last

Facebook post or Tweet?
A throwback video of my son and me
twirling spaghetti with our ngers in our
ears. Totally silly but I couldnt resist!

If your life were a book,

what would the title be?
Most likely Smoke and Mirrors: a Guide to
Survival. I joke a lot about how I try to at least
make it look like I am keeping it all together!

If science discovered a way

to change sexual orientation,
what would you do?
Um, short answer, no. I dont think
science is the problem.

What do you believe in

beyond the physical world?
A whole lot. I am a skeptic but pretty
religiously get my tarot read and most
of all I believe in connection. Connection
to people, community, the earth, all
that is around us. I believe connection is
essential to our wholehearted selves.

Whats your advice for

LGBT movement leaders?
I think its so important that we begin to
seriously think and become active about
inclusion and intersectionality. This is
not just for gender but for race, class
and age. I would love to believe we have
come further than we have, but we are
still leaving so much of our community
behind and to fend for themselves.

What historical outcome

would you change?
I believe that everything happens for a
reason and the most important thing
is that we learn from history both
personally and politically.

Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
This question is just impossible for me
for a thousand reasons. I may have to
answer this one over a drink!

What would you walk

across hot coals for?
Thats easy my son. Wholeheartedly.

What LGBT stereotype

annoys you most?
That lesbians dont have sex.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

Clich, but it would have to be D.E.B.S.
Enough said.

Whats the most

overrated social custom?
Texting. I miss the days of the art of
conversation.

What trophy or prize

do you most covet?
A Grammy. Ive always wished I could sing.

What do you wish youd known at 18?

That I was worth more than I thought I
was and that I would have to learn to love
myself versus get it from someone else.

On what do you insist?

Kindness and integrity

Why Washington?
D.C. is my hometown and every time I
leave something always called me back.

The cast of 110 in the Shade at Fords Theatre. Slightly dated, the musical still soars and stirs.

Lizzie looks for love in

stirring 110 in the Shade
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Long before dating apps, nice smalltown girls relied on things like church
socials and sometimes a big Fourth of July
picnic to meet guys. For Lizzie Curry, the
self-deprecating heroine of 110 in the
Shade, its the latter.
Set against a droughty 1950s Texas, the
tenderly aecting musical (now at Fords
Theatre) unfolds over one life-changing
day. Just home from an unsuccessful
man-shing expedition in a neighboring
town, Lizzie (a terric Tracy Lynn Olivera)
is a bit daunted but not undone. Thirtyish
and never kissed (except by a boy in the
schoolyard who did it on dare), Lizzie is all
practicality on the surface, but beneath
her wry and capable exterior, lie myriad
insecurities along with an unyielding
yearning for romance.
Lizzie is the heart of the home she
shares with her widowed father H.C.
(the reliably excellent Christopher Bloch)
and her brothers, blunt Noah (Stephen
Gregory Smith) and sweet but dim Jimmy
(Gregory Maheu) a sentiment the
male trio expresses in Lizzies Comin
Home. Still, theyre eager to help nd
her a mate. The latest target is Sheri
File (nicely underplayed by Fords
veteran Kevin McAllister), a reticent man
whos interested in Lizzie (and she in
him). Despite an attraction, emotionally
unavailable File pulls away.
In the hard-to-watch follow-up scene,
brother Noah insists its time to face facts:
Lizzie is plain and will never marry. While
Lizzie tries to hide her hurt before her family,
in private she unabashedly bares her fears
with Old Maid, a sad aria heartrendingly
sung by powerhouse Olivera.
Adapted from the 1954 play The
Rainmaker by N. Richard Nash, the
musical premiered on Broadway in 1953
with a book (also by Nash), and a ne
score by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt,
creators of The Fantasticks. The 2007

Broadway revival memorably starred

Audra MacDonald as Lizzie.
The work sometimes shows its age. Lizzies
value is based almost solely on her ability to
attract men. Yet she ultimately does it on her
own terms, refusing to use artice to trap a
husband. With a fun tune titled Raunchy
Lizzie breaks the tension, allowing her inner
vamp to come out and play, but just for a
few minutes. Then she again pats down her
pinned back hair, smoothes her rumples
and checks her buttons.
Just when Lizzie thinks her love life
will remain forever as dry as the arid
town, her luck changes in the person of
Starbuck, a good-looking con man played
by Ben Crawford. The character is part
Elmer Gantry and part The Music Mans
Harold Hill, but visually tight black
pants, leather jacket and shiny dark hair
hes all Conrad Birdie. Yet, Crawford
employs a mix of vulnerability and goofy
bravado that makes the part his own.
Starbuck rolls onto the scene promising
that hell bring rain. In no time he has
the towns people and whipped the near
desperate townspeople into rainmaking
frenzy with The Rain Song Lizzie clocks
Starbuck as a fraud, but she also senses he
might have something for her. It seems this
spinsters personal drought may have ended.
Lizzie and the sketchy stranger get to
know each with the captivatingly sung
and acted songs Melisande and Simple
Little Things. Olivera and Crawford share
chemistry and, for this piece, a similar
contemporary acting style.
Fords
production,
staged
and
choreographed by Marcia Milgrom
Dodge, boasts a diverse cast blessed with
gorgeous voices. Theyre accompanied by
a splendid eight-person orchestra (that
sounds much larger) led by top-notch
musical director Jay Crowder.

STEVEN REINEKE, conductor

Beyonce stuns with

throbbing, messy new album
By CHRIS GERARD
This isnt your Grandmas lemonade
its spiked with a complex brew of
pride and nostalgia, anger and betrayal,
deance and resolution.
Or maybe it is Grandmas, depending
on who she is history tends to repeat.
Beyoncs sixth album, Lemonade
(released online April 23 but in stores
Friday, May 6) is a bold and relentlessly
innovative fusion of ultra-modern R&B
with strong undercurrents of classic
soul and gospel slashed with elements
spun from a staggeringly diverse sonic
universe. Its a deeply personal journey
that chronicles a complex relationship
riven by distrust, rage and anxiety that
is echoed in the context of an America
roiled by blazing social upheaval.
Coursing through the minimalist
electro-beats and throbbing bass are
samples and interpolations from sources
as diverse as Led Zeppelin, Yeah Yeah
Yeahs, Soulja Boy, Alan Lomax and
others. There are few easily digestible
pop hooks. Although detractors deride
her as a vapid pop diva propped up by
her songwriting and production team,
Beyonc is condent enough not to simply
nd the 12 catchiest songs her cadre of
collaborators could write. Lemonade
isnt loaded with tracks that will burn up
Top 40 radio shes beyond that but it
remains accessible and engaging.
The lyrics on Lemonade often read like
the journal of a woman scarred by betrayal,
unambiguous in how ripped asunder she
is, but with a tenacious determination to
rebuild. The haunting Pray You Catch Me
sets the relationship dynamic that forms the
core of the album immediately: You can
taste the dishonesty/its all over your breath
as you pass it o so cavalier/but even thats
a test/constantly aware of it all, my lonely
ear pressed against the walls of your world.
Hold On contrasts an almost jaunty
musical vibe with lyrics seething with
suspicion and acrimony. Dont Hurt
Yourself, a collaboration with Jack White,
sears with razor shards of guitar and
one of Beyoncs gutsiest vocals. The
Weeknd brings a smooth, sexy sheen
to the provocative 6 Inch, an anthem

of empowerment. Daddys Lessons

is a surreal country stomper that nds
Beyonc gazing back at her childhood
experiences and relating aws and ssures
that both men in her life have in common.
He told me when hes gone/heres what
you do when trouble comes to town/and
men like me come around/oh, my daddy
said shoot. Her aim proves dead-on true.
Sandcastles is a devastating ballad,
Beyoncs heart laid bare with a stunning
vocal performance. The hurt is there, but
its also buoyed by the hope of a ame
that may burn with rage and regret but
still feeds on passion.
Kendrick Lamar joins her on the
powerhouse Freedom, a blistering
reection on the resilience and strength
of a woman as an individual as well as
collective battles being fought every
moment. Lemonade closes with the
audacious strut Formation, in which
Beyonce revels with pride in her personal
heritage. Its a remarkable bit of studio
wizardry with a deeply pulsing bass and
vocals that leap out of the speakers like
knives in a 3-D movie.
Like Kendrick Lamars To Pimp a
Buttery before it, Lemonade captures
the zeitgeist of an era that has seen the
rise of the Black Lives Matter movement
amidst broiling social tensions. A new
world of omni-present video-capable
smartphones has suddenly exposed what
has been hidden in plain sight for years
but was too often ignored because it
wasnt blaring across the internet and the
24-hour information enlade that marks
our current reality.
Its clear that Beyonc felt she needed
to make a statement, and she does.
Its symbolized in the albums stirring
one-hour visual accompaniment which
features appearances by the mothers
of three young black men whose brutal
murders became ashpoints and helped
ignite a restorm that shows no sign of
abating: Michael Brown, Eric Garner and
Trayvon Martin. These are names that will
ring through history.
Lemonade is a soul-rending catharsis
both intimate and vast that will be looked
back upon as strongly evocative of an
era of growing anger, tension and an
absolute unwillingness to accept the
status quo. Beyonc wrings the sweetest
juice from the bitterest lemons the world
ings in her direction.

Filmmakers present
their work at Maryland
Film Festival
By BRIAN T. CARNEY
Legendary
gay
lmmaker
John
Waters oers a simple reason why you
should go to the Maryland Film Festival
(marylandlmfestival.com) this weekend.
The Maryland Film Festival is the best
place to see new movies that will surprise,
horrify or delight you, he says. Its better
cruising than Grindr.
And the Baltimore native should know.
Hes a proud board member of the festival
which will oer about 120 screenings at
venues throughout Baltimore. The festival,
which opened Wednesday and runs
through Sunday, May 8, is described as an
exploration and elevation of the passions of
lmmakers. It emphasizes the connection
between lmmakers and audiences,
so each North American feature-length
screening will be hosted by thelmmaker.
Waters himself will be on hand on
Friday, May 6 to continue a festival
tradition and host one of his favorite
movies. This year his selection is The
Deep Blue Sea by gay auteur Terence
Davies. The movie centers on the
disastrous aair between Hester Collyer
(Rachel Weisz) and English ghter pilot
Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston) in the
wake of World War II.
If you ever have been in love in a
destructive, obsessional manner, the
movie I am presenting, The Deep Blue
Sea will be your perfect date movie,
Waters says.
The festival also features some excellent
LGBT movies. On Saturday, audiences
can watch the moving documentary,
The Guys Next Door with lmmakers
Amy Geller and Allie Humanek. The
documentary tells the remarkable story
of college friends Rachel and Erik and

their extended families. Rachel is married

to Tony; they are raising three kids in
suburban Boston. Erik is married to
Sandro, and when the two decide they
want to start a family, Rachel oers to be
their surrogate.
The lm opens shortly before the birth
of Erik and Sandros second daughter and
follows the two couples over the course of
the next several years. Filmmaker Geller
says that the movie is an intimate portrait
of an American family that explores who
we are now.
It also challenges our idea of family, she
says. Its about how children change the
way we think about the past and how they
change the way we plan for the future.
Humanek says directing the lm jointly
challenged their ideas about lmmaking and
collaboration. Working so closely together,
Humanek says, was incredibly hard. Were
both very strong-willed and we think about
things very dierently. But we had the same
goal and in the end the creative challenge
resulted in a better product.
On Sunday, Canadian lmmaker Ingrid
Veninger will be on hand to watch her
new movie He Hated Pigeons. Veninger
describes the lm as a slow-burning
odyssey about love and loss. It features a
beautiful man in a red pick-up truck who
travels from the northern Atacama desert
to the southern Patagonian edge of Chile
to fulll the wish of his mysteriously
deceased lover Sebastien.
He Hated Pigeons got started when
Veninger attended FEMCine, a womens
lm festival in Chile. Actor Pedro Fontaine
was assigned to be her translator and
over the course of the festival they
became friends.
I left Santiago for the Yukon and found
myself thinking about returning to Chile to
make a feature lm with Pedro in the lead
role, even though I had never seen him
act in anything, Veninger says. When I
landed, we Skyped and Pedro committed
to being in my next lm, without knowing
anything about the script.

SARA LEMANSKI caught the orienteering bug after watching her wife compete.

Local orienteering
club welcomes all
By KEVIN MAJOROS
Earlier this year, the Washington Blade
spotlighted noncompetitive sports clubs
in the area. One of the sports proled,
orienteering, also has a competitive side.
Orienteering is an outdoor sport
suitable for all ages and tness levels
and Quantico Orienteering Club is the
largest and most active orienteering
club in the nation. Orienteering is similar
to a scavenger hunt in which you use a
compass and a detailed map to nd
checkpoints (controls) that have been
placed at locations marked on the map.
The club is primarily straight but is
becoming wildly popular with the LGBT
community. Last weekend, the orienteers
hosted the Patapsco Granite meet at
Patapsco State Park which oered advanced
courses and a special granite sprint course.
Upcoming events are online at qocweb.org.
Immediately following the event, LGBT
participants posted their appreciation on
social media: Awesome time orienteering
this morning at Patapsco State Park!
(Steve Marker); Orienteering!?? Love it!
(Matt Mitchell); and Great job guys!!! We
escaped mostly unharmed. (Jared Silk).
Orienteering oers participants the
option to just walk along at a leisurely
pace or race against other competitors.
Quantico uses an electronic timing
system called an epunch that records
your start, control check-ins and nish.
After the results are posted, you can login and check your times compared to
others who competed that day.
The group has established sites
throughout the Maryland and Virginia
region and operates primarily from
September to June with events on
three weekends per month. The cost
is inexpensive and there is no preregistration.
Along
with
standard
orienteering, Quantico oers night
orienteering, ski orienteering and
mountain bike orienteering.
The group suggests that participants
leave their phones in their cars and club
member Sara Lemanski can attest to that
being a good idea.
When I rst started I walked a lot

because trying to read the maps was

traveled together to the North American

The members of Quantico Orienteering
are very welcoming and dont care if you
are LGBT, Lemanski says. When Amber
and I got married in March of 2015, they
were so happy for us.
Her wife may be the world-class
athlete in the family, but Lemanski has an
impressive sports background herself.
Originally from Michigan, Lemanski
grew up on military bases including Fort
Sumter and played any sport she could get
her hands on including softball, basketball
and soccer. While she was attending
University of Texas at San Antonio she
played club lacrosse and soccer.

Everything was ne
till you brought up
this transition stu!

MICHAEL RADKOWSKY, Psy.D. is a licensed

psychologist who works with gay individuals
and couples in D.C. He can be found online
at personalgrowthzone.com. All identifying
information has been changed for reasons
of condentiality. Have a question? Send it to
Michael@personalgrowthzone.com.

MICHAEL,
Stef and I have been dating for
two years. Weve gotten along great,
live together and have a lot of fun.
Shes extremely butch and thats been a
big turn on for me.
However, a few months back,
she started talking about wanting to
transition. This was a major surprise to
me, though some friends say I should
have seen it coming. She told me shes
been struggling with gender stu for a
long time but didnt share it with me.
As she gets increasingly serious about
this, Im getting sadder and madder
because I think Im going to lose my partner
and my relationship. I identify as lesbian
and I want to be with a woman. The idea
of being physically involved with Stef if she
transitions isa giant turno.
Stef is angry with me for not wanting
to be with her if she transitions. She says
she shouldnt have to choose between
our love and her identity. She also says
that if I really love her, then I will want to
be with her no matter what.
I think this is crazy. She sprang this on
me out without any warning. While she
had evidently been thinking about this
for a long time, I had no idea my girlfriend
was thinking of becoming a guy.I put a lot
of love and time into this relationship, so
thats not fair to me.
Also, I think the physical body and
gender of the person I am with are
preferences that I am entitled to have.Im
not intolerant but I dont want to be
guilted into something that isnt right for
me so that Stef gets to have everything
she wants.I resent her presumption that
I should just support this 100 percent.
Advice about how a couple should
proceed with this issue?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
You should be with someone out of
love, not because of guilt or pressure. If

A D V I CE

you arent interested in staying with Stef

should she transition, thats your choice
to make.No one can dictate to whom you
should be attracted.
While its true for some people that
gender doesnt matter, that we love
whom we love, many folks have strong
interest in being with either guys or
gals. That doesnt make you intolerant,
its just who you are. Given our history,
LGBT people should know the absurdity
of making value judgments about sexual
orientation and attraction.
I understand your feeling betrayed by
Stef for not having shared her thinking
about transitioning earlier. I wonder if
asking Stef to share more of her story
might help you to understand her
thinking and the choices shes made.
That might lessen your pain and help
you have some empathy for her. But
depending on what you hear, it might
make you angrier. She might, for example,
say that she had hesitated to tell you out
of fear that she would hurt you or that
you would react badly, leaving you feeling
that she underestimates your resilience
or is blaming you for her lack of courage
or forthrightness.
You are in a position similar to someone
who nds out his or her spouse is
gay.Love often gets mixed in with anger,
shame, confusion and a huge sense of
loss. Sometimes people get support from
knowing that they are not alone.Do you
want to consider seeking out a support
group? A good place to start is the
Straight Spouse Network (straightspouse.
org).Despite the name, this is also a group
for those with a transgender partner.
If Stef does decide to transition,
perhaps youll make your peace with this
and be able to function as a supportive
friend. Transitioning is a challenging
process and Stef will need a lot of love
as she goes forward. However, if you are
angry and feeling guilted by Stef, you will
not be a great candidate to be a helper.
To Stef: Yes, it would be wonderful for
you if you could transition and stay with
your girlfriend, but if shes not interested,
you cannot change her mind. This really is
her call. Life sometimes forces us to make a
choice about what is most important to us,
and it sounds like you are headed straight
into that crucible. I hope you are seeking out
strong support for yourself from others.
To the two of you: Its clear that youve
meant a lot to each other. If Stef transitions,
can you both honor the relationship
youve had by respecting the choice that
the other is making? Going forward, you
are more likely to feel better and be at
peace if you aim toward generosity and
understanding rather than parting with
bitterness and resentment.

Kano says choruss

work is far from over

gender and have it be simply about love.

Andrea Miller, artistic director of Gallim
Dance, says shes enjoying returning to
Carmina Burana.
When I was in my teens and I would
babysit, I would always do dance classes
with the kids and the rst section of
Carmina Burana was always our main
dance, she says. Ive listened to it
throughout my adult life.
Shell bring her company of nine
dancers several of whom are gay
to D.C. for the weekend. Last weekend,
about 75 members of the chorus
performed the work with the dancers in
New York at Lincoln Center where Kano
says it was extremely well received.
Kano calls the choreography very
visceral and very tribal. Miller says the
work was a joy to choreograph.
The thing about Carmina Burana is
that it touches on very human emotions,
she says. The range of the human
experience and truth, struggle and
passion and lust and even existentialism.
I think it makes a lot of sense to see those
bodies. Its so visceral to the music.
For the second half, the chorus will
revisit works that had previously been
commissioned for it such as Build a
House from Alexanders House and
This House Shall Stand, from Songs
of My Family, as well as This Train,
the rst song rehearsed at the choruss
rst rehearsal in 1981. Theyll also sing
Make Them Hear You, from the musical
Ragtime, one of the choruss signature
numbers. Theres a Man Goin Round
will pay tribute to chorus members who
have died.
The second half is like a big hug, Kano
says.
Rob Finn, who sings bass two and
joined just last year, says the anniversary
is a huge milestone.
I think the mission has changed since
1981, he says. It is now our responsibility
not only to continue that ght for visibility
and equality that we have always
fought, but also to remember and teach
our history while we do it. We must
remember how hard we have fought,
honor those brave men and women on
whose shoulders we stand and celebrate
the achievements so many of them did
not get to see realized.
The chorus has 220 singing members,
two vocal ensembles, 100 support
volunteers, 400 subscribers, 500 donors
and an annual audience of about 10,000.
Theyve performed at the White House,
Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Memorial and
more. It started after Marsha Pearson, a
straight woman and former D.C. resident,

heard the San Francisco Gay Mens

Chorus sing at the Kennedy Center and
thought D.C. needed its own gay choir.
Despite many accomplishments for
both the chorus and gay rights in general,
Kano says the choruss work is far from
over.
We still have a long way to go, she
says. We really see that when we go
beyond the Beltway to more rural areas.
We have a future because until we can get
everyone to open their minds for equality,
we have work to do. Were here to stay.
Robert Boaz is in his 19th season with
the chorus and sings baritone. He says
the chorus has lasted because we have
a reason to sing.
There are countless stories of how
family members, friends and loved ones
hearts and minds have been changed
because of our singing, he says. We give
hope to the LGBT youth out there who
might think there is no one like them. We
show our audience and the world that
we are people just like everyone else.
We take the mystery out of being gay for
those who think they dont know any gay
people.
Kano says the chorus hopes to have its
new managing director in place by July
1. Chase Maggiano, whos been with the
chorus three years as executive director,
will depart this month. Shes already
thinking about the next 35 years.
Among her dreams are substantial
growth for the GenOUT Youth Chorus,
formed last year under the GMCW
umbrella, more international trips
theyre going to the Ukraine next month
after a trip to Cuba in 2015 and more
recording. She would love to see the
chorus sing on a pop single on the radio
(If Lady Gaga needs us, were available,
she says with a laugh) and maybe
someday even win a Grammy.
Theres a whole smorgasbord of things
Id like to see us do, Kano says. We have
so much talent and with 250 people on
stage, we really make a huge sound.
Its an absolutely incredible sound that
makes a visceral impact. It really hits you
in your core.
Boaz agrees theres much more for the
chorus to do.
GMCW will be relevant until no one on
earth is homophobic, he says.

Avoid these common homebuyer errors

Keep emotions out
of the process
By TIM SAVOY
With the spring market well underway
at the start of May, many potential homebuyers are starting to get serious about
making an offer on their new home. The
month of May marks one of the busiest
times for the D.C. market, and there are
many common errors that potential buyers should avoid before getting to the closing table. Here are a few things to consider
when making an offer this spring:
First, know what you can afford! Many
homebuyers start their home search online through websites like Zillow, Trulia or
ColdwellBanker.com. While each of these
sites is great for understanding the supply of homes that are on the market, it is
important to be preapproved for a mortgage prior to getting serious with the
home search process. You may think you
can afford X amount of home, but you
might qualify for only part of that amount.
Remember that there are a variety of factors that make up your preapproval from
your credit score to the amount of money
you plan to put down on a property. Your
first step to take, if you have not already,
should be to find a great loan officer to
describe your loan options.
Also, be sure to take into consideration
the type of home you would like to purchase. For example, an individual who is
preapproved for their maximum mortgage may not factor in costs for condo
fees if purchasing a condominium. As

The D.C. market is competitive and one common error that homebuyers make is the inability
to compete for a home they want.

a rule of thumb, remember that your

monthly payment for a mortgage can be
broken down into PITI; that is, principle
and interest (this is your loan), taxes and
insurance (plus a condo/coop/HOA fee
where applicable).
Next, be prepared when it comes to
making an offer. For serious buyers who
would like to enter a contract, bring your
checkbook to showings and open houses
in the event you decide to write an offer
on your next home. Contracts in the D.C.
area almost always include some kind
of earnest money deposit (or EMD). This
deposit, which comes back to the buyer
at closing in the form of down payment
or closing costs, is normally two to three
percent of the purchase price.
One of the most common errors that
homebuyers make is forgetting about
closing costs. These costs are paid at clos-

ing and generally account for 2.5 percent

to 3 percent of the transaction costs.
Common closing costs include transfer
taxes paid to the city/state you live in,
brokerage fees, title costs and insurance
and proration for utilities like condo fees,
water and property taxes. These costs are
added on top of the down payment that
you make to purchase a property. For example, if you are purchasing a $500,000
townhome with 20 percent down, you
can expect to pay $100,000 in a down
payment and around $12,500 to $15,000
in closing costs. Of course, there are
many other options for a down payment
depending on your lenders options.
The D.C. market is competitive, and one
common error that homebuyers make is
the inability to compete for a home they
want. For listings new on the market, it is
of course very important to run compa-

rables on the property. However, keep

in mind that listings in the hottest places
in D.C. sell for 100 percent of the listed
value, if not higher in some cases. Thus,
plan to search for the perfect place with
new listings rather than getting a steal on
negotiating. However, dont be afraid of
competitive listings as many buyers may
be making some of these common errors.
Finally, it is important not to make the
error of emotions. Yes, buying a home is
a seriously scary and emotional process.
However, remember that millions of people accomplish a purchase each year. For
the purposes of the process, your home
purchase is considered a business transaction. Emotions can often make nonpersonal actions seem very personal between buyers and sellers. Remember that
at the end of the day, you will end up with
the home of your dreams with patience
and preparation. The full emotion should
come after the home is closed and the
Champagne has been poured.
All in all, the home buying process is
complex and full of potential pitfalls for
homebuyers, both new and seasoned.
Each year, more than 40 million people
move in the United States, and a good
portion of those purchase a home. It is
important when purchasing a home to
keep focused and prepared for the process. After a short time, you will be moving into your new home and breathing
smoothly once again. To those house
hunting now, good luck!
