TITLE
Modification on Pin & cotter arrangement of equaliser & compensating beam mechanism of WDG3A,
WDM3B & WDM3D locomotives fitted with equaliser & compensating beam mechanism.

2.

BACKGROUND
Locking of equaliser & compensating beam mechanism of high adhesion bogie is done by pin and
cotter. Failures of cotter and pin have been reported by some Railways because of breakage of cotter
and subsequent falling off of cotter & pin.

3.

OBJECT
This Modification Sheet is intended to redress the problems of pin & cotter arrangement of equaliser &
compensating beam mechanism.

INVESTIGATION
In drawing no. SK.VL-139 (Alt.9), although the cotter is specified as as per IS:2638, the details of the
cotter have not been specified. On investigation at various sheds, it was found that cotters being used in
different sheds are quite varying. Sometimes the cotters are split along the thickness, but sometimes
along the width. Thicknesses of the split portions are also not uniform. The bending of the cotters are
also improper and non standard. Sometimes there is a gap between the washer & cotter, which also
cause breakage of cotter.

APPLICATION TO CLASS OF LOCOMOTIVES


Locomotives fitted with equaliser & compensating beam mechanism.

MODIFICATION CONTENTS
SK.VL-139 (Alt.09) is revised to SK.VL-139(Alt.10) to include details of cotter and step size washer.
i.

If cotters of non standard designs are fitted in equaliser & compensating beam mechanism, they
should be removed from service.

ii.

The cotter of recommended design as shown in drawing no. SK.VL-139 (Alt. 10) should be fitted.

iii.

If slack appears between washer and cotter, additional step size washers (item no. 10 of drawing no.
SK.VL-139 (Alt. 10)) may be used.

iv.

In RDSO drawing no. SK.VL-139 (Alt.9 and also Alt.10), the pin is of non lubricating type. It is very
essential to note that only non-metallic self lubricated bushes must be used with such pin. In such
cases where non-metallic self lubricating bush is provided, lubrication of pin is not required.

v.

It is understood that in most of the locomotives metallic bushes are provided and often it may not be
clear to the maintenance staff whether metallic bushes are fitted or non-metallic bushes .Therefore
lubrication of pins should be continued through the lubricating holes of pin till full switch over to nonmetallic self lubricating bushes is done. The non-lubricating pin as mentioned in drg. SK.VL-139
must be fitted only with non-metallic self lubricating bushes.

i.

Flat split cotter to item 9 of RDSO drawing no. SK.VL-139 (Alt. 10).

ii.

Step size washers of 1/2/3 mm to item 10 of RDSO drawing no. SK.VL-139 (Alt. 10).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
i.

Cotter once used should not be reused in locomotives.

ii.

After assembly, cotter ends must be bent as shown in View-X in drawing no. SK.VL-139 (Alt. 10).
