I-Search Project Reflection
Deciding on what I wanted to be when I grew up has always been a challenging task for
me. The careers I were interested in were risky and did not guarantee me a stable lifestyle and as
a consequence, were not the path my parents wished for me to walk on; however, the fact that
performing arts and entertainment was something that deeply attracted me never changed.
Given this opportunity to explore a career of our choice, I choose the path of a
choreographer and dance instructor. I always knew that it took way more that just being good
to be a dance instructor and choreographer, but I didnt realize exactly how much training and
experience one had to go through before reaching the level of a professional.
Ive discovered many of my favorite choreographers on the internet and I decided to
message a few famous dancers whom I deeply admire. The professionals I wanted to interview
were all very famous dancers; therefore, my sincere request to learn about the career from them
could easily be disregarded as spam or fan-mail. There was no guarantee that they would respond

or even see my message, but I assumed it was worth a shot. A couple of questions I had in mind
were how they first came in touch with dancing and what inspired them to pursue the career. I
also wanted to know what kind of training they went through before reaching the level they are
currently at, and what kinds of special experiences boosted their skill levels.
I messaged up to five of my favorite choreographers and also emailed their companies,
but unfortunately I received no response despite my absolute sincerity in the messages I sent out.
It was an outcome I was ready to receive because of the overwhelming popularity of the people I
wished to interview. This made me think about how these dancers were able to receive such high
levels of recognition and support. I read several biographies of successful choreographers, and
one thing in common between the majority of them was that they began learning dancing at a
very young age. Theyve been through multiple years of intense training and hardships to be at
where they are today. Ive also watched several interviews, and many of the professionals say
that it is indeed a difficult path; however, if you do choose to walk this path, you will learn
knowledge and gain experiences that a normal life and job would not be able to provide.
I am very passionate about performing arts and dancing especially, but because of my
inexperience, I am not sure if I will be fully ready in the future to risk living a stable life for the
sake of what entertains me. My parents are also concerned about this career, but at the same
time, they want me to choose a job that I am interested in. I hope that in a few years time, I will
be able to make decisions about which career would allow me to live a life without regrets.
The information I acquired through completing this project made me realize the path of
becoming a dancer, or a performer of any kind, is no doubt a path that is full of risks and

uncertainties. There is no shortcut to the top for this is a career that relies solely on ones
experience, determination, and passion.
