Tote welcomes LNG container ship

American ship-owner Tote Maritime has taken delivery of the worlds first LNGpowered containership in San Diego. The ship is set to leave for the East Coast
over the next few days where she will operate from the Port of Jacksonville
(Jaxport) in Florida.
LNG-fuelled container ship Isla
Bella was delivered last Friday
during a ceremony at General
Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in
San Diego, US .
Tote Maritime, serving routes
from the mainland US to the
Caribbean as well as a routes to
Alaska, is converting its vessels to
run on LNG, Jaxport said.
Tote Maritime is the new name
of Totes pair of shipping companies, Sea Star Line and Tote Ocean
Trailer Express, collectively rebranded in September.
Isla Bella was christened at
the yard in April, and was in sea
trials in August. The vessel will
operate a route between Jacksonville and San Juan, Puerto
Rico on entering service before
the end of the year. Sister ship
Perla del Caribe will enter service on the same route in the first
quarter of 2016.
Tote Maritimes LNG-fuelled
container ships are designed by
DSEC, a subsidiary of Korean shipyard known for LNG tanker construction, Daewoo Shipbuilding
and Marine Engineering (DSME).
They include DSMEs patented
LNG fuel-gas system and a MAN
ME-GI dual fuel slow speed engine,
allowing operation either on fuel
oil or LNG.

Jacksonville LNG
A joint venture of US utility-owned
LNG supplier Pivotal LNG and California-based LNG infrastructure
provider Wespac Midstream is supplying fuel for Totes new ship.
The venture is building a new
natural gas liquefaction facility in
Jacksonville, Jacksonville LNG.

where the port is also completing
a new Intermodal Container Transfer Facility, allowing rapid container transfer to rail.
The LNG bunkering station will
initially fuel ships from land and
ultimately within the harbour
using a LNG bunker barge,
reported HHP Insight.
WesPac Midstream and its affiliate Clean Marine Energy, in March
ordered the LNG bunker barge
that will eventually serve Tote in
Jacksonville. It is expected for delivery from Conrad Orange Shipyard next year and will initially be
based in Tacoma, Washington, to
service Tote ro-ro vessels.
Wespac Midstream is also
developing an LNG fuelling and
export jetty in Delta, Canada.
Pivotal LNGs other activities
include supplying LNG to a subsidiary of Jacksonville-based
Crowley Maritime, Carib Energy
for use by industrial customers in
Puerto Rico.

Crowley Maritime also plans to

add two new, LNG-powered, container-roll-on/roll-off ships, which
like Totes ships, will serve the
route between Jacksonville and
San Juan.

Eagle LNG
Eagle LNG Partners, a partnership between GE Ventures and
Ferus Natural Gas Fuels, plans
a separate facility in Jacksonville
that would offer LNG-as-fuel
domestically and supply small
scale LNG to nearby export
markets. It would be about
three miles Northwest on the
St. Johns River.
The project, which reached
FEED stage in May, would include
three liquefaction trains capable
of producing 0.55 million metric
tonnes of LNG per annum at full
capacity.
The facility would have
4,000,000 to 8,000,000 gallons of
total storage on site, a marine
load-out facility to accommodate
small-to mid-size LNG vessels as
well as bunkering barges and a
truck load-out facility.

Fuelling
Harvey Power is capable of operating on LNG, and can operate over
19 days in normal GOM rig supply
mode without refuelling, between
refueling, said Harvey Gulf.
The vessel will refuel with LNG
at Harvey Gulfs new LNG bunkering facility at Port Fourchon in
Louisiana, which conducted its
first LNG bunkering in February.
Harvey Gulfs LNG bunkering
facility is being marketed as offering LNG-fuelled vessels a fuelling
location within a 40-mile radius of
600 oil and gas rigs and platforms.

Shipyard
Harvey Gulf in June launched a
new affiliate and announced plans
to acquire two American shipyards
from the Gulf Coast Shipyard
Group.
It is acquiring Gulf Coast Shipyard in Gulfport, Mississippi,
where Harvey Energy was built,
as well as Trinity Yachts in New
Orleans, Louisiana. The Gulfport
yard is offering services for new
buildings and repair of commercial
and military vessels.
The new vessel uses three
Wrtsil 6L34DF dual fuel gensets,
providing 7.5 MW of power and is
fueled by a Wartsila-supplied

Planned Icelandic port to offer LNG bunkering

German port management company Bremenports recently gave an update on its
plan for the future Finnafjrur Port with LNG bunkering facilities.
A feasibility study is underway for
a new port in Iceland involving
Bremenports, Icelandic authorities
and the Icelandic engineering
company EFLA, reported Norwegian news website Barents Observer.
Bremenports managing director
Robert Howe updated on the project during a presentation to the
Arctic Circle 2015 assembly in

Reykjavik last week.

The proposed site for the port
makes it ideal for ships transiting
a future Transpolar Sea Route created by the melting of arctic ice,
expected to be transitable from
around 2030, said Howe. Preliminary proposals for port include
LNG bunkering.

Site selection
The municipality of Langanesbygg and Bremenports last year
signed a partnership agreement in
which Bremenports agreed to pay
for feasibility studies over the
next few years.
EFLA director of business development Hafsteinn Helgason is
engaged in the feasibility studies.
EFLA in August installed two
weather monitoring Lidar devices
on an Icelandic fjord called

Finnafjrur at Langanes. Preliminary research and proposals

for harbour installations in
Finnafjrur indicate that building
costs will be within reasonable
limits for such undertakings, said
EFLA.
Devices were installed on both
sides of the fjord, investigating
the feasibility of building a major
vessel port on the site.
Research on the land was completed in May, while research on
weather conditions and the geology of the area is currently being
carried out, EFLA said. Buoys to
measure waves and currents will
soon be placed within and around
the fjord. Data on currents and
weather conditions will be collected for at least two years and
environmental assessments will
take up to four years.

Primagaz bunkers LNG at Danish Port of Esbjerg

Primagaz Denmark, part of Dutch bottled gas distributor SHV Energy, has announced
the first LNG bunkering at Denmark's Port of Esbjerg for Danish bunker supplier
Unioil-Supply.
Primagaz has conducted LNG
bunkering for platform supply vessel Rem Leader.
The company completed the
bunkering just 48 hours after the

Dubai plans LNG fuel

The charterer of FSRU Explorer,
state gas distributor Dubai Supply
Authority (Dusup), may possibly
be planning to bunker smaller
batches of LNG to an LNG-fuelled
tug using a barge with ISO containers starting in 2016, industry
sources told TradeWinds. Dubai

Deltamarin designing LNG-powered bulker

Finnish engineering group Deltamarin, Greek bulk carrier owner Arista Shipping, American class body ABS
and French LNG cargo tank manufacturer GTT have announced a project to develop LNG propulsion for bulk
carriers, Project Forward.
Arista Shipping has since May led
the project to create a commercially viable LNG-powered dry bulk
carrier design.
The concept design will be
based on the Deltamarin B.Delta
design for bulk carriers from
82,000 and 210,000dwt, for which
120 ships have been ordered.
It will employ GTTs membrane-type LNG fuel tanks.
Plans foresee development of
an additional LNG fuel retrofit
module for existing bulk carriers.
The designs are expected to
comply with IMO NOx Tier III and
Marpol Annex VI SOx emission levels. The partners expect emission
reductions from Project Forward
could be 40% for CO2, 80% for NOx

and 98% for SOx.

Project Forward will span
two years applied research and
development work.
ABS will conduct concept and
detail design approvals according
to its rules for bulk carriers and
gas-powered ships.

Markets
Arista Shipping Principal Alexander
Panagopulos, said, Owners must
decide within the next 5-10 years
whether gas as fuel is a practical
means of compliance with lower
emissions standards and this project will enable all of us to understand its feasibility.
GTTs vice president, LNG as
fuel division, Jacques Danton said:

At this time, we can recognise
market leaders launching LNG
projects now in order to be the
first on the learning curve. During

the ramp up phase of LNG as fuel,

autonomy will be a key feature for
integrated solutions as provided
by membrane technology.

Germany funds LNG container ship retrofit

The German government has awarded a grant for the conversion of German shipping company Wessels containership Wes Amelie to enable it to run on LNG, the first LNG retrofit for a containership.
German Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of
Transport and Digital Infrastructure Enak Ferlemann awarded
Wessels the grant under the ministrys Mobility and Fuel Strategy.
The strategy, first published in

2013, promotes the maritime use

of LNG as an environmentally
friendly fuel.
The award follows a two-year
feasibility study between Wessels
Reederei, gas specialist TGE Marine Gas Engineering and engine

Christian Peter Hoepfner Wessels Reederei, Dr. Hans J. Gtjens Bureau Veritas, Dr. Thomas Spindler MAN SE, Enak Ferlemann Parlamentarischer Staatssekretr BMVI, Tessa Rodewaldt Maritime LNG
Plattform, Dr. Klaus Dieter Gerdsmeyer TGE Marine Gas Engineering,
Gerd Wessels Wessels Reederei, Stefan Eefting MAN SE, Helge Pols
BMVI, Achim Wehrmann BMVI (Source: Wessels)

manufacturer MAN Diesel & Turbo.

The grant was in the sevenfigures region, according to
Wessels.

Specifications
The expected retrofit of vessel,
1,000 TEU cargo capacity Wes
Amelie, follows on the first
orders of LNG container ship
new buildings, two 3,100 TEU
containerships for US operator
Tote Maritime.
The German container ship
currently has a fuel tank capable
of holding 1,063cbm heavy fuel
and 128cbm marine gas oil. She
features Ice Class 1 A notation
and is fitted for carrying dangerous goods.
The companies investigated the
main engine conversion options for
the propulsion system from heavy
fuel oil to LNG.
LNG refit will allow the operator to reduce pollutant emissions
by the following levels: Sox by
around99%, NOx by around 90%,

CO2 by up to 20%.
Wessels said the ship has 23
sister ships, 16 of them structurally identical, which "allows
follow-up projects to be easily
implemented.
This ship therefore facilitates a multiplier effect, with
sufficient quantities of conversion capable vessels on the European continent.
The use of LNG as fuel requires the availability of liquefied
natural gas on shipping and trade
routes. The existing LNG infrastructure (liquefaction plants,
storage capacity, bunker facilities)
in even high-traffic ports is not
nearly sufficient enough for full
coverage of ships under LNG
operation.
The BMVI funded project contributes to the resolution of this
chicken or the egg problem by
promoting the demand for LNG as
fuel for the maritime industry,
through a demand-generating flagship project.

Lloyds Register acquires fuel tester GMT

UK class body Lloyds Register has acquired UK fuels testing company Guardian Marine Testing. LR GMT will
help shipping companies reduce emissions and lower operational costs.
Lloyds Register acquired an 80%
share of GMT in March this year.
Lloyds Register was previously a
client of GMT, with testing for
Lloyds Register making up around
80% of GMTs business.
The acquisition integrates two
businesses, Lloyds Registers Fuel
Oil Bunkering Analysis and Advisory
Service (FOBAS) and Guardian Marine Testing. The new company is
called Lloyds Register GMT.

Shell and Albert Heijn join on LNG trucks

Shell last week opened its fourth LNG filling station for trucks in the Netherlands at a location belonging to Dutch
supermarket chain Albert Heijn in Pijnacker, the Netherlands.
Albert Heijns LNG-fuelled trucks,
used to deliver goods to stores,
have access to LNG fuel at the
new station.
Shell and Albert Heijn have
agreed to work together to sup-

port the market for LNG as a fuel

for heavy transport in urban areas.
Shell expects owners of LNGfuelled trucks, which it says are
quieter than diesel-fuelled trucks,
will take advantage of the ability

to stay on the road longer in areas

where evening noise restrictions
apply.
Supermarkets in urban areas
face such restrictions, it said.

Station

The new station in Pijnacker has a

capacity of 70,000 liters of LNG,
and can provide more than 200
trucks of LNG per day.
Customers like Albert Heijn can
access LNG using a Shell Card,
which also allows access to a wide
range of services.
Shell has since October 1 had
access to the import and storage
facilities of the import terminal
which supplies its LNG truck station network.
Shell was foundation customer
of Gates new 'break bulk' terminal intended to serve small scale
LNG demand.

Shell is also working on the construction of a new, specialised LNG

bunkering vessel capable of making ship-to-ship transfers of LNG.
Shell general manager, downstream LNG, Lauran Wetemans
said: Shell is expanding its network of LNG filling stations and it
offers customers the option to
pay with one card. Depending on
the evolution of the market, we
will continue to invest in the development of LNG for transport
infrastructure. "
Albert Heijn shops and distribution director Cees van Vliet explained the advantages of quieter
trucks. He said, Noise plays a
very important role. We can provide with LNG trucks at night to
deliver goods when there is less
traffic and we therefore also have
a positive effect on road safety
around our store."
