Hi,
The main thing is to make the waveguide port large enough that all the
energy in the em elds around the line are captured so that the port
impedance can be calculated correctly, but not so large that the truncated
eld solution becomes overmoded or inaccurately-meshed. The rule of
thumb I have heard is that the port area should be ~10 times as wide as
the width of the strip, and ~5 times as high as the substrate thickness,
though I have found it necessary to adjust this for specic situations. If
you're unsure, sometimes it is helpful to run a preliminary simplied model
rst and try various waveguide port sizes, looking for dimensions where
the port solution is insensitive to small variations.
On rare occasions, I have also found it necessary to add shielding around
the port. In my experience, this usually resolves issues with port-to-port
coupling at low frequencies where the model becomes electrically very
small.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
You can simply go to the menu "Macro", then "Solver", then "Ports" and
nally "Calculate port extension coefcient". You can enter the parameters
of your substrate and the trace widththen CST will give you the size of the
port you have to use, including a schematic that will explain you how to
create your port.
A very easy way to do it. I hope this willhelp you.

David

Hi Sobuz,
Accoridng to waht already sayd before, I give you my "personal rule".
Considering the folloqing dimensions:
1) microstrip metalization width = w [-w/2,w/2] in Xcoordinates
2) microstrip metalization thickness = t [0,t] in Y coordinates
3) substrate thickness = h [-h,0] in Y coordinates

the "rule" I use is:
A) waveguide width = 7*w [-7*w/2 , 7*w/2] in X direction
B) waveguide hight = 6*h [-h, 5*h] in Y direction
Hope it will help you.

Francesco
