WARNING
1. Always observe precautions.
Parts requiring special attention in this product will include a label containing the
mark shown on the left plus precautionary notes. Be sure to observe the precautions.
Be sure to observe the Safety Information given in the Operators Manual.
2. Before starting the procedures, be sure to unplug the power cord.
This product contains a high-voltage unit and a circuit with a large current
capacity that may cause an electric shock or burn.
The product also contains parts that can jerk suddenly and cause injury.
If this product uses a laser, laser beam leakage may cause eye damage or
blindness.
3. Use the specified parts.
For replacement parts, always use the genuine parts specified in the manufacturers parts manual. Installing a wrong or unauthorized part could cause dielectric breakdown, overload, or undermine safety devices resulting in possible
electric shock or fire.
Replace a blown electrical fuse or thermal fuse with its corresponding genuine
part specified in the manufacturers parts manual. Installing a fuse of a different
make or rating could lead to a possible fire. If a thermal fuse blows frequently,
the temperature control system may have a problem and action must be taken
to eliminate the cause of the problem.
P-1
4. Handle the power cord with care and never use a multiple outlet.
Do not break, crush or otherwise damage the power cord. Placing a heavy
object on the power cord, or pulling or bending it may damage it, resulting in a
possible fire or electric shock.
Do not use a multiple outlet to which any other appliance or machine is connected.
Be sure the power outlet meets or exceeds the specified capacity.
5. Be careful with the high-voltage parts.
A part marked with the symbol shown on the left carries a high voltage. Touching it could result in an electric shock or burn. Be sure to unplug the power cord
before servicing this part or the parts near it.
6. Do not work with wet hands.
Do not unplug or plug in the power cord, or perform any kind of service or
inspection with wet hands. Doing so could result in an electric shock.
P-2
CAUTION
1. Precautions for Service Jobs
A toothed washer and spring washer, if used originally, must be reinstalled.
Omitting them may result in contact failure which could cause an electric shock
or fire.
When reassembling parts, make sure that the correct screws (size, type) are
used in the correct places. Using the wrong screw could lead to stripped
threads, poorly secured parts, poor insulating or grounding, and result in a malfunction, electric shock or injury.
Take great care to avoid personal injury from possible burrs and sharp edges on
the parts, frames and chassis of the product.
When moving the product or removing an option, use care not to injure your
back or allow your hands to be caught in mechanisms.
2. Precautions for Servicing with Covers and Parts Removed
Wherever feasible, keep all parts and covers mounted when energizing the
product.
If energizing the product with a cover removed is absolutely unavoidable, do not
touch any exposed live parts and use care not to allow your clothing to be
caught in the moving parts. Never leave a product in this condition unattended.
Never place disassembled parts or a container of liquid on the product. Parts
falling into, or the liquid spilling inside, the mechanism could result in an electric
shock or fire.
Never use a flammable spray near the product. This could result in a fire.
Make sure the power cord is unplugged before removing or installing circuit
boards or plugging in or unplugging connectors.
Always use the interlock switch actuating jig to actuate an interlock switch when
a cover is opened or removed. The use of folded paper or some other object
may damage the interlock switch mechanism, possibly resulting in an electric
shock, injury or blindness.
3. Precautions for the Working Environment
The product must be placed on a flat, level surface that is stable and secure.
Never place this product or its parts on an unsteady or tilting workbench when
servicing.
Provide good ventilation at regular intervals if a service job must be done in a
confined space for a long period of time.
Avoid dusty locations and places exposed to oil or steam.
Avoid working positions that may block the ventilation ports of the product.
4. Precautions for Handling Batteries (Lithium, Nickel-Cadmium, etc.)
Replace a rundown battery with the same type as specified in the manufacturers parts manual.
Before installing a new battery, make sure of the correct polarity of the installation or the battery could burst.
Dispose of used batteries according to the local regulations. Never dispose of
them at the users premises or attempt to try to discharge one.
P-3
5. Precautions for the Laser Beam (Only for Products Employing a Laser)
Removing the cover marked with the following caution label could lead to possible exposure to the laser beam, resulting in eye damage or blindness. Be sure
to unplug the power cord before removing this cover.
If removing this cover while the power is ON is unavoidable, be sure to wear
protective laser goggles that meet specifications.
Make sure that no one enters the room when the machine is in this condition.
When handling the laser unit, observe the Precautions for Handling Laser
Equipment.

Other Precautions
When handling circuit boards, observe the HANDLING of PWBs.
The PC Drum is a very delicate component. Observe the precautions given in HANDLING OF THE PC DRUM because mishandling may result in serious image problems.
Note that replacement of a circuit board may call for readjustments or resetting of particular items, or software installation.

Handling of PWBs
1. During Transportation/Storage:
During transportation or when in storage, new P.W. Boards must not be indiscriminately
removed from their protective conductive bags.
Do not store or place P.W. Boards in a location exposed to direct sunlight and high temperature.
When it becomes absolutely necessary to remove a Board from its conductive bag or
case, always place it on its conductive mat in an area as free as possible from static electricity.
Do not touch the pins of the ICs with your bare hands.
Protect the PWBs from any external force so that they are not bent or damaged.
2. During Inspection/Replacement:
Avoid checking the IC directly with a multimeter; use connectors on the Board.
Never create a closed circuit across IC pins with a metal tool.
Before unplugging connectors from the P.W. Boards, make sure that the power cord has
been unplugged from the outlet.
When removing a Board from its conductive bag or conductive case, do not touch the
pins of the ICs or the printed pattern. Place it in position by holding only the edges of the
Board.
When touching the PWB, wear a wrist strap and connect its cord to a securely grounded
place whenever possible. If you cannot wear a wrist strap, touch a metal part to discharge static electricity before touching the PWB.
Note that replacement of a PWB may call for readjustments or resetting of particular
items.

3. Soak a small amount of either ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol into a clean, unused Dust-Free Cotton Pad which has been folded over into quarters.
Now, wipe the surface of the PC Drum in one continuous movement from its rear edge to its front
edge and off its surface one to two times.
Never move the Pad back and forth.
1076D003
4. Using the SAME face of the Pad, repeat the procedure explained in the latter half of step 3 until the
entire surface of the PC Drum has been wiped.
Always OVERLAP the areas when wiping. Two
complete turns of the PC Drum would be appropriate for cleaning.
1076D004
NOTES
Even when the PC Drum is only locally dirtied, wipe the entire surface.
Do not expose the PC Drum to direct sunlight. Clean it as quickly as possible even under
interior illumination.
If dirt remains after cleaning, repeat the entire procedure from the beginning one more
time.

Punch Mechanism
A copy being transported through the Finisher is briefly stopped and punched by the
Punch Unit.
(1)
When the trailing edge of the copy leaves the area of contact between the Punch Registration Rollers, the strength inherent to the copy paper, together with the elasticity of the loop, causes the trailing edge of the copy to be pressed against the area of contact between the Punch Registration
Rollers. This positions the copy correctly at the punching position.
The Punch Unit punches holes in the copy along its trailing edge.
M-18
NOTE
When fed into the Non-Sort or Finisher Tray:
If the copy paper length is 279 mm or more, the leading edge of the copy has already left
the area of contact between Vertical Transport Roller 2/Rolls 2 when Punch Registration
Clutch 1 is energized. At the same time that Punch Registration Clutch 1 is energized,
therefore, Punch Registration Clutch 2 (normally-open type) is energized to cut off drive
to Vertical Transport Roller 2.
When fed into the Elevator Tray:
If the copy paper length is 279 mm or more, the leading edge of the copy has already left
the area of contact between the Elevator Exit Rollers when Punch Registration Clutch 1
is energized. At the same time that Punch Registration Clutch 1 is energized, therefore,
Elevator Tray Exit Motor is deenergized to cut off drive to the Elevator Exit Roller.

1. The Finisher moves the 1st Crease Stopper according to the Folding mode (Crease,
Half-Fold, or Z-Fold) and the paper size selected on the copier.
The 1st Crease Stopper is moved by 1st Crease Stopper Motor. The position for the 1st
Crease Stopper is determined by changing the number of 1st Crease Stopper Motor output pulses according to the Folding mode and paper size.
The 1st Crease Stopper is moved as the spiral shaft turns.
The Switching Plate changes its position at the same time that Paper Crease Switching
Solenoid is energized and deenergized.
The Switching Plate is actuated to select the correct paper path when a copy is fed into
the Paper Folding Unit and smoothly to the 1st Transport Path. After the copy has been
folded, it is fed to the Vertical Transport Section. The Switching Plate Mylar helps guide
the copy paper.
2. A loop is formed in the copy fed from the copier between the Folding Transport Roller
and Folding Registration Roller.
When Paper Center Crease Switchback Sensor detects the leading edge of the copy,
Paper Crease Motor starts turning forward. Skew Correction Clutch (normally-open type)
is then energized to stop the Folding Registration Roller and kept so for a given period of
time so that a loop is formed in the copy.
When Skew Correction Clutch is deenergized, the plunger of Half/Z-Fold Switching Solenoid is drawn in or out depending on the Folding mode, which in turn changes the position of the Folding Switching Plate.
The leading edge of the copy is pressed against the area of contact between the Folding
Registration Rollers, which forms a loop in the copy to correct any skew in its leading
edge.

3. The leading edge of the copy is transported up to the 1st Crease Stopper.
The 1st Crease Stopper is provided with a guide shaft that runs parallel with the spiral

4. The guide plate beside the Center Folding Roller and Folding Roller 1 guides the copy
toward the area of contact between these two rollers. Since the leading edge of the
copy is blocked by the 1st Crease Stopper, this movement in the copy forms a loop at
the area of contact between the two rollers.
The guide plate is shaped to ensure that a good loop is formed in the copy.
5. When the leading edge of the loop in the copy reaches the area of contact between the

between them, thus making a fold in it.

Z-Fold Operation
1. The copy pinched between the Center Folding Roller and Folding Roller 1 through the
preliminary folding operation is transported to the 2nd Transport Path. When the leading edge of the crease in the copy reaches the 2nd Crease Stopper, there is another
loop formed in the copy, since the copy is still transported by the Center Folding Roller
and Folding Roller 1. Because of the shape of the 2nd Transport Path, this second loop
is formed toward the area of contact between the Center Folding Roller and Folding
Roller 2.
When Skew Correction Clutch is deenergized, the plunger of Half/Z-Fold Switching Solenoid is drawn out, which in turn changes the position of the Folding Switching Plate.
In Z-Fold, the Folding Switching Plate swings into the position shown on the next page,
allowing the copy to be transported to the 2nd Transport Path.

The Staple Empty Detecting Sensor is used to detect whether there is a staple sheet or
not in the Staple Cartridge. This sensor is a reflector type photosensor. When there is a
staple sheet, the light from the sensors LED is reflected by the staple sheet, turning ON
the sensors phototransistor. This results in a LOW signal being input to PJ14A-8. If there
is no staple sheet, the LED light is not reflected, which turns OFF the phototransistor. At
this time, a HIGH signal is input to PJ14A-8 and the Finisher Panel gives a staple-sheetempty warning.

The Finisher carries out a staple sheet detection sequence when there are about 60 staples left in the Staple Cartridge. If a staple-sheet-empty condition is detected during a
stapling sequence, that particular stapling sequence is continued until it is completed.
After the sequence has been completed, the staple-sheet-empty warning is given
prompting the operator to change the Staple Cartridge. Immediately after a new Staple
Cartridge has been loaded, the Stapler is operated to complete six consecutive stapling
sequences (it is stopped when Stapler Home Position Sensor is activated a sixth time).
This is done to prevent a dummy run (an operation of the Stapler without actually driving a staple into the copy) immediately following the replacement of the cartridge.

Stapling Paper Detecting Sensors LED/PQ are provided to prevent a dummy run (an
operation of the Stapler with no copies placed). To cope with different stapling modes,
the stapling paper is detected at a position before the actual stapling positions. A reflector type photosensor is installed under the slider rails for the Stapling Unit.

The copy set transport mechanism employs two pairs of rollers, Copy Set Pressure Rollers 1 and Copy Set Pressure Rollers 2, that transport the copy set into the Stapling Unit.
Drive for the copy set transport comes from Copy Set Transport Motor.
To prevent a copy or copies in the middle of a copy set from slipping and being left
behind during transport, each of the two pairs of rollers is made of a soft material.

(1)
4470M045AA
A two-phase stepping motor is used as Copy Set Transport Motor to ensure good positioning accuracy for stapling. The movement and speed of the copy set are controlled by
applying pulse signals output from PJ17A-5 to 8 to the motor. Each output pulse from
IC1A turns Copy Set Transport Motor one step, which is a 1.8 revolution of the motor
shaft. This is equivalent to a movement of about 0.377 mm of the copy set as it is fed by
the Copy Set Transport Rollers. The number of output pulses from IC1A therefore controls the movement of the copy set.
M-54

B. Center Staple
Drive from Copy Set Transport Motor is transmitted to Copy Set Pressure Rollers 1 and
Copy Set Pressure Rollers 2 which, in turn, transport the copy set until Paper Center Stapling Leading Edge Position Sensor LED/PQ detects the leading edge of the copy set.
From the position when Paper Center Stapling Leading Edge Position Sensor LED/PQ
detects the leading edge, the rollers further transport the copy set to the stapling position
over a distance corresponding to a set number of pulses (which varies with the paper
size).

Paper Center Stapling Leading Edge Position Sensor LED/PQ detects the leading edge
of the copy set when the copy set is to be stapled at two points at the center. An interrupter type photosensor is used to enhance detection accuracy that can otherwise be
degraded because of the wide transport guide plate involved.
Stepping motors are used for the transport of copy sets, meaning that the motors themselves can provide good stopping accuracy. The sensor is, nonetheless, used to further
enhance the positioning accuracy, since Copy Set Pressure Rollers are soft, meaning
that they have a wider area of contact between the rollers.

Each time a copy is fed into the Finisher Tray, Copy Set Pressure Rollers 1 are brought
into contact with, and separated from, each other. This aligns the copy with the rest of
the copies of the copy set. (If, for example, ten copies are fed into the Finisher Tray, the
rollers carry out this sequence of pressure/release operation for each of the second
through ninth copies.) The pressure/release operation occurs a given period of time after
the trailing edge of the copy has moved past Finisher Tray Exit Sensor.
The pressure/release operation of Copy Set Pressure Rollers 1 is done also for transporting the copy set stored in the Finisher Tray.
The drive for this operation comes from Copy Set Clamp Motor 1.

NOTE
Make the following adjustments in this order: Phase Adjustment, Crosswise Position
Adjustment, and Longitudinal Position Adjustment.
A. Phase Adjustment
This adjustment is concerned with the stapling action of the Stapler Assy in synchronism
with that of the Clinch Assy.
NOTE
For the adjustment, use two Phase Adjustment Jigs (4427-7108-01).
Clinch Assy
Insert the jig into the adjustment holes in the Clinch
Assy to preserve alignment. Then, with the Stapler in
its most opened position, install the belt at the front of
the unit and hook the thick tension spring.

NOTE
If the clinching action is faulty, loosen the screws
that secure the Clinch Assy and change the staple
entry point to find a position for correct clinching
action.
NOTE
As a guideline, the leading staple of the staple
sheet should be in correct alignment with the center of the slit in the Clinch Assy.

TROUBLESHOOTING
1.
SENSOR CHECK
To ensure an easy and safe check for sensor operation, the Finisher allows the Tech.
Rep. to determine if signals are properly input by checking the sensor input data when
the copier is in the standby state (including misfeed, malfunction, and closure failure conditions).
1-1.
NOTE
These are only typical screens which may be different from what are shown on each individual copier.

If a misfeed that has occurred between the Paper Folding Unit and Punch Unit
cannot be cleared even with the given misfeed clearing procedure, first
remove the Punch Unit, then try to remove the sheet of misfeed paper.
(This is done because sliding out the Paper Folding Unit can damage not only the
paper, but also some mylar films.)
NOTE
To reset the misfeed detection, unlock and slide the Finisher away from the copier,
remove the misfeed paper, and slide the Finisher back against the copier.
