ETHEL M CHETTLE POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP IN ARCHITECTURE


Established in 1987 under a bequest from the estate of Mrs Ethel May Chettle who bequeathed the income from her residuary
estate to the University of which 80 percent was to be towards postgraduate work in the Department of Architecture leading in
part to the establishment of the Ethel Chettle Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Architecture.
The object of the scholarship is to allow an outstanding student to undertake full-time postgraduate research study in
Architecture and the Allied Arts at the University of Sydney. The scholarship may be awarded on recommendation of a
committee comprised of the Dean, Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) and Professor or Discipline Head of Architecture and the
Allied Arts to a recent graduate in architecture from a faculty or school in Australia, provided the applicant is of sufficient merit.
An application and supporting documentation as specified by the Faculty of Architecture are required.
The scholar shall furnish progress reports to the Faculty at yearly intervals. Copies of all papers published as the result of
holding the scholarship shall acknowledge tenure of the Ethel Chettle Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Architecture and
the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sydney and the scholar shall furnish copies to the Faculty.
The scholarship shall, in the case of a candidate for the degree of Master of Philosophy (Architecture), be tenable for up to two
years, with no extension possible. For a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Architecture), the scholarship shall be
tenable for up to three years, with a possible extension of up to six months. Continuation of the scholarship in both cases is
based on evidence of satisfactory progress toward the degree. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to
the commencement of the scholarship will be deducted from the maximum tenure of the scholarship.
The annual value of the scholarship shall be at the same rate as that for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA).
Expected value for 2014: Approximately $24,653

DAVID NOEL MURRAY POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP


Founded in 1972 by a bequest from David Noel Murray who bequeathed his residuary estate to the University to establish a
scholarship in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions:
1. The scholarship shall be known as the David Noel Murray Scholarship.
2. The object of the scholarship is to enable a graduate with the degree Master of Architecture from this University to
undertake a full time postgraduate research course within the Faculty of Architecture.
3. The scholarship shall be awarded as funds are available to a graduate with the degree Master of Architecture of the
University of Sydney. The award shall be based on a students academic record for the degree Master of Architecture.
4. The scholarship shall, in the case of a candidate for the degree of Master of Philosophy (Architecture), be tenable for up
to two years, with no extension possible. For a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Architecture), the
scholarship shall be tenable for up to three years, with a possible extension of up to six months. Continuation of the
scholarship in both cases is based on evidence of satisfactory progress toward the degree. Periods of study already
undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the scholarship will be deducted from the maximum tenure
of the scholarship.
5. Up to two scholarships shall be awarded so that, as far as the income from the bequest will allow, it will be related to the
prevailing value of an Australian Postgraduate Award.
6. The scholarship shall be awarded on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the Dean of the Faculty of
Architecture, Design and Planning and the Professors of Architecture, Architectural & Design Science, and Urban and
Regional Planning.
Expected value in 2010 is the same as the APA; as the income from the bequest will allow.

URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP


The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions:
1. The scholarship shall be known as the Urban and Regional Planning Research Scholarship.
2. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a student commencing a full time Master or Doctor of Philosophy degree in the discipline
of Urban and Regional Planning, with a focus on City Form and Urban Infrastructure.
3. The scholarship shall be awarded on the recommendation of a panel consisting of the Urban and Regional Planning Head of
Discipline, the Associate Dean for Graduate Research Studies and a third academic staff member with relevant experience in
research supervision. Applicants will need to demonstrate significant previous academic merit and research potential.
4. The Scholarship will be valued at $35,000 per annum to be paid as a stipend. Continuation of the Scholarship is based on
evidence of satisfactory progress towards the degree.
5 .The scholarship shall, in the case of a candidate for the degree of Master of Philosophy, be tenable for up to two years. For a
candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, the scholarship shall be tenable for up to three years. Periods of study already
undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the scholarship will be deducted from the maximum tenure of the
scholarship. Extensions to the duration of this scholarship will not be offered.
Expected value for 2013: approximately $35000

FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE DESIGN AND PLANNING INDIGENOUS STUDENT RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP


Established in 2004 by the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, the Scholarship shall be awarded to an Indigenous
Australian or Torres Strait Islander research student of exceptional research promise to undertake a Master of
Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning. The scholarship is awarded
to a qualified applicant in the year following the expiry of the tenure of the previous holder on recommendation of the
Faculty Graduate Research Committee. The scholarship shall be awarded under the following conditions:
1. Applicants must have applied for and subsequently enrol full time in, or be currently enrolled full time in, a
Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning.
2. The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit and appropriateness of the research proposal.
3. The scholarship shall be equal in value to an Australian Postgraduate Award and payable as a stipend.
4. The scholarship shall, in the case of a candidate for the degree of Master of Philosophy (Architecture), be
tenable for up to two years, with no extension possible. For a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy
(Architecture), the scholarship shall be tenable for up to three years, with a possible extension of up to six
months. Continuation of the scholarship in both cases is based on evidence of satisfactory progress toward the
degree. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the scholarship
will be deducted from the maximum tenure of the scholarship.
5. Applicants must provide confirmation of aboriginality in the form of a letter of identity from either a local land
council, legal service, medical service or any other official Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation
The annual value of the scholarship shall be at the same rate as that for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA).
