1 Safety instructions
Safety instructions
The compact transmitters Prosonic T FMU have been designed to operate safely in
accordance with current technical and safety standards and must be installed by
qualified personnel according to the instructions in this manual. The manufacturer
accepts no responsibility for any damage arising from incorrect use, insatallation or
operation of the equipment. Changes or modifications to the equipment not expressly
approved in the operating instructions or by the bodies responsible for compliance may
make the users authority to use the equipment null and void. Damaged instruments
which may be a safety hazard must not be operated and are to be marked as defective.

Operation
The instruments may only be operated by trained personnel authorized by the plant
operator. The instructions given in this manual are to be followed exactly.

"Warning" indicates activities or processes which - if improperly executed - could lead to
serious injury to persons, to a safety risk or to destruction of the device.
Equipotential terminal
A connection which must be connected to the grounding system of the equipment: this
can, for example, be a potential matching line of a star-shaped grounding system,
depending on national or company code of practice.
DC voltage
A terminal at which DC voltage is applied or through which DC flows.
Alternating current
A terminal at which (sinusoidal) alternating voltage is applied or through which AC flows.

Level echos from the blocking distance (BD) cannot be evaluated due to the transient
characteristics of the sensor. Install the Prosonic T at a height so that the blocking
distance BD is not undershot, even at maximum fill level. Use a pipe nozzle if you cannot
maintain the blocking distance in any other way. The interior of the nozzle must be
smooth and may not contain any edges or welded joints. In particular, there should be
no burr on the inside of the tank side nozzle end. Note the specified limits for nozzle
diameter and length.

If the blocking distance is undershot, it may cause device malfunction.

Do not install the sensor in the middle of the tank (3). We recommend leaving a
distance between the sensor and the tank wall (1) measuring 1/3 of the tank radius.
Use a protective cover (page 18), in order to protect the device from direct sun or rain
(2).
Avoid measurements through the filling curtain (4).
Make sure that equipment (5) such as limit switches, temperature sensors, etc. are not
located within the emitting angle . In particular, symmetrical equipment (6) such as
heating coils, baffles etc. can influence measurement.
Align the sensor so that it is vertical to the product surface.
Never install two ultrasonic measuring devices in a tank.

Installation
Note!
Make use of the echo quality display (page 14) to find the best installation position.
Screw the Prosonic T at the screw-in piece using an 60 AF spanner. In order to facilitate
the wiring the housing is rotatable after installation.

Display module
(optional)
When the display module is used, the Prosonic T is operated via an operating matrix.
The current matrix position and the associated parameter (e.g. measured value) are
displayed on the module. The bargraph represents the measured value or the echo
quality, depending on the matrix position.
The basic functions for simple applications (empty and full calibration, locking and
unlocking) are accesible without the display module.
Endress+Hauser
When operated without the display module, the empty- and full-distance are detected
by the instrument itself and have to be confirmed by a key combination.

Linearization
After the basic calibration, the measured value is displayed in V0H0 as a percentage of
the span. The value can be converted into any other unit by the linearization function.
Four different modes of linearization can be selcted in V2H0.

"Level" (V2H0=0)

selected in V8H2 (m or ft).

Error message
As long as a linearization table is being entered, the current output indicates an error
message. The error disappears as soon as the table is complete and activated.
When the table has been activated, the following measured values can be read out:

The current output always follows the measured value V0H0. Therefore, the
4 mA value (V0H5) and the 20 mA value (V0H6) must be adapted to the new units (see
chapter 6.3).

makes sure, that the current output does not fall below 4 mA even if the measured value
is less than V0H5. Use this option, if your control system can not handle currents below

Echo Quality
(V3H2)
Additional parameters
The echo quality of the ultrasonic signal is displayed in V3H3 in steps from 1 to 10.
Additionally it is indicated by the bargraph in the matrix positions V0H8 and V0H9. Use
this display in order to find the best installation position. For a sound measurement, the
echo quality should be at least 5.
Interference echo
suppression (V3H0)
Step
1
Matrix
position
V0H8
V3H0
V0H8
Entry / Meaning
Check the displayed distance between sensor diaphragm and product surface. An
interference echo suppression is necessary, if the displayed value is too low.
Enter the actual distance between sensor diaphragm and product surface. Confirm
by pressing H. Wait approx. 40 s. The interference echo is suppressed.
Check the displayed distance between sensor diaphragm and product surface. If
the displayed value is still to low, a furhter interference echo must be suppressed.
Therefore, repeat Step 2.
Temperature
(V3H5)
The actual temperature at the sensor is shown in V3H5. If the limit of 80C has been
exceeded once, the highest value ever reached remains stored (drag indicator).
The lost echo delay time makes sure that no alarm will be output if the echo becomes
lost for a short period of time (for example due to foam). Values between 0 and 255 s
can be entered. The dafault setting is 60 s. For standard applications the lost echo delay
time should be not less than 30 s.
Actual level
(V3H1)
Vessels with tightly rounded roofs (dome covers) can cause double echos giving rise to
a display showing a level which is too low. Double echos can be excluded by increasing
the first echo factor to "maximum".
Output damping
(V0H4)
14
V3H4
off
medium
maximum
The effect of the output damping is to attenuate the analogue output and the measurand
indication on the display of the Prosonic T. When the liquid surface is not steady, a
steady reading can be obtained with the aid of the output damping. Values from 0 to
255 s can be entered. The default setting is 3 s. Please note, that the Prosonic T can not
resolve level changes faster than the output damping.

of these steps can be checked.
Level simulation

Volume simulation
(V9H6=2)
Use the volume simulation, to check the scaling of the output value:
1. Set V9H6=2
2. In V9H7, enter a main value (level, volume or weight).
3. Check if the output current (V9H8) assumes the correct value.
4. Set V9H6=0 to return to the ordinary operation mode.
Current simulation
(V9H6=3)
Use the current simulation to check correct operation of the external instruments:
1. Set V9H6=3
2. In V9H7, enter a current (in mA).
3. Now, the specified current is present at the output. Check, if the external instruments
respond correctly to this current.
4. Set V9H6=0 to return to the ordinary operation mode.
