TEACHING POINTS: Past tense verbs: regular and irregular
Question and negative forms

SIZE OF CLASS: 20
AGE OF CLASS: 9-11
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
To help the students to understand that verbs can tell about actions that happened in the
past.
To help the students to write a paragraph or composition using past tense verbs.
To help the students distinguishing past-present.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
Given the flashcards and past form of the verbs on the board, the students will be able to
match flashcards and verbs correctly.
Given some blanks in the sentences, the students will be able to fill in the blanks with the
correct form of the verbs.
Given a list of verbs, students will identify which of them are irregular and which of them
takes (i)ed in the end.
MATERIALS:

Wall pictures
Hand outs ( list of past verbs)

Flashcards

Verb cards

Pencil

Blackboard

Tables and charts

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE:
It is assumed that the students have already learned present simple form and
also they have enough vocabulary to understand the lesson.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEM:
The students have difficulty in identifying regular and irregular verbs so the
teacher will help them. In addition the students have difficulty in using the verbs
according to positive, negative and question sentences.
The students will encounter some problems in differentiating the past and
adjective forms of some verbs ( interested ).

PROCEDURE:
1. WARM UP:

Warm up / Motivation
After greeting, some questions about the topic are asked.
-Ali, where were you yesterday?
-When did you sleep last night?
-Who was the winner of Galatasaray-Fenerbahce match?

Review of the previous lesson

Where is the capital city of Ozbekistan?


When do you get up in the mornings?

Who teaches you planning?

Who likes playing football?

State the aim of the objectives


The teacher says , I went to picnic last weekend.
Where did you go?
I watched TV last night, what did you do?
I didnt do my homework yesterday, because I had an
headache.

2. PRESENTATION:
The teacher shows the flashcards to the students one by one and says:
-I slept till 10.00 yesterday.
-I saw your brother last weekend.
-He looked at the picture two weeks ago.
-The baby cried because he was hungry.
-When did you meet him?
The teacher wants the learners to look at the list of verbs that are in the form
of infinitive and past. Then he wants them to repeat the verbs after him.

3. PRACTICE:

The teacher asks:

Where did you go last night?

The teacher makes sentences in the form of simple present tense and wants the students
to make them in the past form.

4. PRODUCTION:
We can give a story chronologically in flash cards and ask them to fabricate a
story.
