REFLECTIONS P.O.A.

Field Teaching Practice sessions were hampered by a number of disruptions at the school, however my
lecturer reminded me that teaching is not only about delivery of lessons but being involve in the school
activities and so I did get involved in all activities. I must say I enjoyed being part of it. The college for also
grateful for my assistance.

Lesson No 1 INTRODUCTION TO THE BALANCE SHEET

Positives- This lesson was well received by the students from the very inception when they enjoyed the selfie moment,
they referred to it during the explanation of the balance sheet. Using my questioning map I was able to elicit information
from each of the students who were the ones really creating the ideas and this was evident from the responses received
in the during the group assessment. The highpoint of this lesson was when the class was over students were still engaged
in discussing the content and final assessment game, where items was placed on each groups desk and they group
member worked together to tag the correct classification asset capital or liabilities. Resources used were quite
applicable to the content and the students enjoyed the song and the use of the cellphone.
ImprovementsTime management as the game took more time than I had anticipated and class ran a few minutes into the break.
However the students did not mind at all.

LESSON NO 2 . THE CLASSIFICATION OF ASSETS
Positives
Originally this lesson was meant to be thought within two periods, however I was asked to divided the
lesson into two separate parts
Classifying Asset and Practise Exercises (double)
For this lesson I used the flipped classroom technique I could tell that the students enjoyed learning from
each other and the confidence of the chosen student being boosted. There was evidence of the student
understanding key term based on the assessment results. The closure technique worked quite well as
both as assessment as well as a summary. There was a vast improvement in time management, I utilised
this time to complete an extra practise exercise and started planning for our Open Day presentation.
Open Day planning 1
Students were placed in groups and given the opportunity to pick a topic randomly using the process of
elimination one member of a group picked a topic.

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
Negatives - Generally, today I fell really pleased when I left my class because I achieve the targets and
the students were getting interested in planning for the open day. But there is always room for
improvement and I felt that I could have improved on my questioning skills.
Lesson 3 Classifying Liabilities and What is Capital ?
Someone once said, One of the key characteristic of a good teacher is learning to be flexible and being able to
read students mood.
Today I experienced this first hand as my class was just after lunch and the students seemed quite distracted with
Carnival in the air and sports day around. So I quickly shifted my teaching method into a game and we even created
a song or rhyme.
At the end of the class everyone was chanting
Grp one Liabilities are what is owe
Grp 2- How long is it for?
Grp 3- More than a year
Grp- 1Thats a long term
Grp 2 Less than a year
Grp 3- That a current liability
Grp 1 Capital ?
Grp Owner contribution to the business
We were able to cover the content very quickly and so we had more time to discuss our open day .

Lesson No 4 The Balance Sheet And The Accounting Equation

Positives
Todays lesson went quite well, the students responded to the questions and 90% answered the practise assessment
accurately. Originally, I would have given the student the acronym for the accounting equation but instead I allowed the
students to create this acronym . I was pleased when in less than 2 tries they had come up with the said acronym I had in
mind.
Negatives
I was asked today to repeat myself on two occasion during this class by the students at the back of the class, this can
mean two things I need to control the chatter at the back of the class or I need to project my voice at a higher rate.

Lesson 5 What is working Capital? Part 1

Positives:
This lesson when well. The majority of the class was attentive and participated in the class. For this lesson I used a
variety of strategies such case a chart, case studies and practise exercises. It was worth it because the students
understood the concept, it did not cover the importance of the working capital and but they were asked the question why
is working capital important? the responses were quite favourable. I received positive comments from the cooperating
teacher especially due to the fact that he had felt that the class would not understand this topic.
Negatives:

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
It took a full five minutes for the class to settle down today, I later found out that this was because of friction from group
work. I immediately dealt with this issue by speaking to members in private and then did some re-grouping. So im hoping
by the next class this will be resolved.

Lesson 5 Working Capital Part ii

I left class quite pleased today because despite the distractions from the previous class we had a
successful class. As time passes on I could see my students interest in the subject growing. One student
remarked: Miss I really like Accounts. I reminded the class that they are a team and they should always
work together and help their partner.

Lesson 6 the vertical format of the balance sheet (order of liquidity)

It is said that practise make perfect and this is so true. The use of drama in the set induction captured the
students attention. The students participated in todays lesson and this created excitement and allowed
for the seamless movement from teaching point to teaching point. An interactive chart was used as an
assessment tool , much to the delight of the students. I have also improved in terms of time management,
questioning skills and classroom management.

Lesson no 7 the vertical Format of the Balance Sheet Order of Permanence

As usual the class seem very receptive of the lesson, I believed this was because of having clearly stated
objectives at the beginning of the class. Additionally, I used a group activity for the assessment and this I
felt I could have managed a little better because students took 3 mins to decide on the group leader.

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
However, I was able to complete all objectives because once the students were settled they worked
quickly with my guidance. I am really pleased with the performance of this class.

Lesson Number 8 the Vertical Balance Sheet part II order of permanence

Today I gave the students a choice and told them they had to power to decide what we would
do, on one hand we could move on and on the other we could practise what we learnt the
previous day. I also allowed them to work individually. Motivation levels in class was so high , I
realised that teenagers like to feel that they are in control and are making the decisions. The

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
students were quiet and worked swiftly on the tasks. The funny thing is that I did plan to do
the recap, I just made the students believe that they were making the choice. I believe I am
getting very good at the teaching game.

Lesson 9 & 10 OUTLINE OF THE HORIZONTAL FORMAT OF THE BALANCE SHEET

(double period) order of liquidity

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
It is a good feeling when as a student teacher you are able to initiate a change in a students
attitude. During the closure section of the lesson a student who indicated he did not like
Principles of Accounts volunteered to participate in the activity. The students enjoyed the
lesson and expressed excitement for the next class. Time management was one area I was not
comfortable with today but today we wrapped up all teaching points and was able to get ten
minutes of preparation for our open day .

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
LESSON 11- CALCULATIONS IN THE HORIZONTAL BALANCE SHEET- ORDER OF LIQUIDITY
The students enjoyed this lesson immensely I incorporated the use of music in a competitive as an assessment activity
this kept the pace and the students moved swiftly from one calculation to another. I belief that I am gradually mastering
the art of being in absolute control of the class while giving the students great autonomy. More importantly I am using not
only my content knowledge but my pedagogical skills as well.

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
Lesson No. 12 the Balance Sheet Horizontal Format Order of Permanence Part 1
The students were not as attentive as they normally would be, this because it was the period just after
lunch so I used this time to work together on our pieces for the open day. We all had fun working together
not as separate team but as team Four 4 R. I could see the excitement growing inside of the students I am
really motivated to become a full time teacher.

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
Lesson No. 13 & 14 the Balance Sheet Horizontal Format Order of Permanence Part 2
The cooperating teacher gave me very good comments about my teaching style, even though I used
group work for the activities I was able to spot students who were about to get distracted. This I know
came after the three year of field teaching experience. However, the problem of time management popped
up again as I finished my lesson exactly within the thirty minutes and there was no time left for our open
day preparations. I gave my students my email and number and we agreed to communicate via social
media.

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
Lesson No 15 The Effects of Transactions on the Balance Sheet-

This lesson began with a recap of simple asset transaction this I termed going down memory lane this
captured the students attention and helped to recap a previous topic. The students found that they could
relate to this topic and so this made the teaching learning process much more efficient and more time was
spent on working practise exercises. After this lesson, one point I noted is that a good lesson is not only the
result of careful planning but also putting yourself in the minds of the students.

REFLECTIONS P.O.A.
Lesson 16 Review Lesson The Balance Sheet The Vertical Format Order of Permanence
Given that this was a review lesson is used the flipped classroom technique whereby I used
questioning skills to elicit the teaching point and content from the students. The lesson
progressed well with the class complete a full practise exercise. It is my belief that instruction
should be student centred, responsive to students cognitive and personal needs. Also, I
believe that as a teacher it is important to provide meaningful experiential and motivational
activities that will encourage the students to learn. Thus, in this lesson, I did a lot of activities
which would engage the typical teenage student.
