PSI Mission Statement

PSI provides graduate counselor education, integrating applied psychology and


practical theology to make Christian counseling a servant of the Church for Christ-
centered transformation.

Course Description

This course will survey the theories of human, cognitive, social, learning, and
personality development with comparative review and emphasis on roles of family,
school, and community. The course includes significant content on individual
development within the context of family development across the life-span.

Course Procedures

There will be a variety of instructional activities utilized in this class experience. These
may include, but are not limited to, lectures, handouts, readings, case vignettes, video
illustrations, experiential exercises, role-play, and other assignments. The above
mentioned activities, experiences, and exercises are not designed to be intrusive, as
there will be no pressure to disclose personal information.

Course Objectives

1. To become conversant with the major theories of individual and family development
and transitions across the life-span with pertinent ethical and legal considerations
(CACREP II.K.3.a, e).
2. To increase understanding of the nature and needs of individuals at all
developmental levels. The physical, cognitive, social and spiritual aspects of
development for the stages listed below will be studied and explored:

a. Infancy
b. Early childhood
c. Middle childhood
d. Adolescence
e. Early adulthood
f. Middle adulthood
g. Late adulthood
The goal of this knowledge is to be able to understand the presenting issues of our
clients in light of the developmental struggles they are experiencing, including such
issues as developmental crises, disability, exceptional behavior, addictive behavior,
psychopathology, and situational and environmental factors that affect both normal
and abnormal behavior (CACREP II.K.3.c).
3. To become conversant with the major theories of learning and personality
development (CACREP II.K.3.b).
4. To develop strategies for facilitating optimum development over the life-span
(CACREP II.K.3.d).

Method of Evaluation

Class Participation 10%


• Please note that class participation will be based on attendance and
discussion of the material in class. Missed classes will affect your grade.
• The attendance policy outlined in your student handbook is the standard
for this class.
Mid Term Exam 35%
Final 35%
Reaction/Reflection Assignments 20%
• As we cover each age and stage, you will be required to submit various
reaction/reflection assignments that will include, but are not limited to the
following:
° Personal memories from each stage of your development.
° Interviews with individuals in divergent stages of life.
° Reactions to questions and reserved readings.
