About Ladakh (Leh)

Ladakh is situated in Jammu & Kashmir and is the highest inhabited region of India. Ladakh,
referred by multiple names such as The Last Shangri-la, Little Tibet, The Land of Numerous
Passes, The Land of Mystic Lamas, The Broken Moon and Moonscape (the Moon Land), is
a remote yet popular tourist destination characterised by placid blue lakes, freezing winds,
barren landscape and multi-hued mountains.

History of Ladakh
Situated in a high altitude cold desert at about 3500 meters above sea level, Ladakh is tucked
in between the world's greatest mountain ranges, Great Himalayas and the Karakoram. It is
also traversed by two other parallel ranges, Zanskar and Ladakh.
As per geological studies, Ladakh was once a submerged portion of a large lake a few million
years ago. Powerful tectonic movements pushed up the submerged mass to become the
Ladakh of today. This is evident from the drainage basins Tso-moriri, Tsokar, and Pangong-tso,
which are situated on the plateaus of Rupshu and Chushul of south-east Ladakh.
Historically, Ladakh had a kingdom of its own towards the 10th century and was ruled by
dynasties, which were descendants of the kings of Old Tibet. The Himalayan kingdom of
Ladakh reached the summit of its glory during the reign of King Sengge Namgyal in the 17th
century.
The silk route, which connected the plains of India to Central Asia and West Asia, flourished
during this period. Textiles, spices, raw silk, carpets, dyestuffs and narcotics were the goods
traded by the merchants during this period. Leh, the capital city of the Himalayan kingdom of
Ladakh, gradually became a bustling entry point in this trade route.
Later, the kingdom of Ladakh, along with the neighbouring province of Baltistan, was
incorporated with Jammu & Kashmir in the 18th century. Post Independence, Baltistan became
a part of Pakistan whereas Ladakh remained with Jammu & Kashmir.

People & Culture of Ladakh

Ladakh is famous for its dramatic landscape and Buddhist heritage. Ladakhi, Purig, Tibetan,
Hindi and English are spoken in the region. There are many picturesque hamlets in Ladakh
situated on the banks of the Indus River. All these villages have Buddhist monasteries or
gompas, which are located atop hillocks in their vicinity.
Buddha Purnima, Dosmoche, Galdan Namchot and Losar are the most celebrated festivals in
Ladakh. The Dosmoche Festival is also another of significant festival of the region. The two-day
event involves dramatic dance performances by monks and offerings made by them to ward off
evil spirits and ill fortune and draws many tourists to the region.
Leh, the principal town of Ladakh, is bordered by Pakistan occupied Kashmir in the west, China
in the north & east, Lahul Spiti of Himachal Pradesh in the south-east and Stok mountain range
in the south. Today, Leh is an important Buddhist centre and it houses a settlement for Tibetan
refugees.

Thiksey Gompa, Alchi Choskor and Lamayuru Gompa are chief attractions in Ladakh-Leh. Leh
also offers travellers a chance to participate in adventure sports like mountaineering, white
water rafting and trekking. For the same, tourists can opt for Ladakh holiday packages.

Food & shopping in Ladakh

The region has many small restaurants and pit stops run by locals, which serve traditional
Tibetan food such as momos and thukpa. The butter tea served here made with yaks milk is a
must-try. There is not much to shop in Ladakh except souvenirs from local stores.

Travelling to Ladakh
The best time to visit Ladakh is during summers from the month of June to September. Tourists
are advised to carry a lot of woolens, as it tends to get extremely cold even during the summer
season. The best way to reach Ladakh is by road. Tourists can drive down from Manali to Leh
or also enter the region via Srinagar.

Travelling within Ladakh

The best way to get around Ladakh is either by hiring a taxi or renting a bike. Tourists visiting
the area generally travel to the destination in their own vehicles. Since the terrain is rough and
unpredictable, tourists are advised to carry spare parts and other essentials while visiting
Ladakh.

Accommodation options in Ladakh

Hotel options in Ladakh include budget, lodges and luxury hotels. Tourists visiting Ladakh can
also opt for other accommodation options, ranging from guesthouses to resorts.

Featured review about Ladakh (Leh)

Natural attraction with many artificial fun
"Setting out to Leh - Ladakh might be an invigorating background. Ladakh holds massive
excellence for the spectator; the uneven desert extends from crest to top, a heavenly painting
done in strokes of purple, tan and light black, with streaks of silver and patches of green along
the Indus River. Vacation spots in Leh-Ladakh incorporates its immaculate magnificence, its
well known religious communities, its urban areas and the undertaking games like trekking,
Page 3/21

rafting in Indus and mountain climbing. Safaris are additionally part of its vacation destination.
Investigating Ladakh on the Yak back or the camel might be an experience worth taking back
home.
The minute you arrive on this astonishing mountain town, you can regain some composure
taking magnificence. The stunning immaculate blueness of the sky above will just about sap you
off your breath. The trekking along the mountain way could be an experience worth recalling
home. The snow secured tops, the mountain blossoms, the profound valleys and the streams
streaming can transport you to a universe of complete isolation. The lilting mountain music, the
ministers in maroon robes on their path to the religious community, men in sun beaten
confronts trailing behind their group of sheep are the normal sights and resonances of Ladakh."

Heaven on earth
"Ladakh is a land like no other. Bounded by two of the world's most mightiest mountain ranges,
the great Himalaya and the Karakorum Himalaya, it is a high-altitude desert located at the
western edge of the Tibetan plateau which makes it unique and beautiful in its own way.
Isolated settlements of green oases full of swaying poplar trees, apricot orchids and cultivated
farmland makes it extraordinary despite the rugged terrain. High altitude and rugged terrain
where Ladakh is situated, has people with joyous nature. Their rights, rituals and customs are a
testimony to a variety and tasteful past which reflects in their local festivals that take places all
through the summer.
A visit to Leh palace is a must which holds a rich collection of ornaments, crowns, ceremonial
dresses and sooth paintings made from bright and pleasing colours derived from the crushed
gems and stones. Besides the old structure of the palace it is also the panoramic view of the
city of Leh and the Zanskar range.
Shanti stupa is a white domed stupa or a chorten on a hilltop in chanspa. Besides the religious
significance, the stupa is also famous because of the location, which provides one of the best
panoramic views of the city of Leh. The mountain terrains, view of Leh town and the peaceful
serenity of this place will take you to a different world. You can reach to this place either by
climbing the steps or by taking the road which goes directly to the top. If you love to do
meditation then this is the place for you to try and experience it. The best way to enjoy this place
is by keeping quiet and let your inner voice do the talking.
On a visit to the Shanti Stupa a quick bit of maggi noodles with some ginger, lemon and honey
tea wouldn't be a bad idea. Relishing some thukpa in any restaurant in the market area would
be a great idea. If you are visiting in the month of June and July you might want to enjoy the
juicy and delicious apricots. A stop over at the old Tibetan refugee market would be an ideal
place to shop Tibetan artifacts and prayer flags which are available in various shapes and sizes.
Rafting in the Indus River from a village called Chilling is an experience in itself. You can
choose from various distance options you wish to raft for which makes it convenient for anyone
to enjoy rafting and not get super tired after the activity. A sumptuous meal after the rafting
Page 4/21

would surely make up for all the hunger you

would have after paddling the raft for a while.
A visit to Gurudwara Patthar Sahib adds a spiritual touch to the journey. A deep history and
nestled location between the plains make it more the enjoyable and peaceful in every way. The
sanctum sanctorum make you overcome with piety and a sense of deep peace which is difficult
to describe.
Drive from Leh, climb quickly to Khardung La, one of the world's highest motorable passes, and
then to Hunder in the Nubra Valley, famous for its unique landscapes with desert like sand
dunes and double humped Bactrian camels. Driving deeper into the Nubra Valley and crossing
the world's highest airstrip at Thoise to Turtuk which has only recently been opened to
travellers.
A highlight on this trip, Turtuk was once a part of Baltistan. Besides the amazing scenery and
the warmth of a serene village, there is an ancient fort and a monastery.
Leh is situated on a high altitude and has less oxygen compared to the cities we live in. It is
necessary to be fit physically and carry proper medications to avoid collapse due to high altitude
sickness. If you are riding down from Manali to Leh be careful at the streams and carry plenty of
water and confectioneries with you on a motorcycle.
If you are driving down it should not be that tough compared to a ride on a motorcycle. It is
necessary to carry a complete tool kit along with a spare tyre tube, bulbs, spark plugs and any
other spare part you think might be worth carrying. It would be worth carrying that extra item and
bring it back than to repent on the way in between nowhere.
It is necessary to drink lots of water and fluids to avoid dehydration. As the location is high
above the sea level, it is necessary to protect the skin from the UV rays, as they are more
powerful than what we have at the sea levels. There is a common notion to have some rum or
vodka in the cold weather but it surely is not advisable on the high altitude. You need to breathe
more to compensate for low oxygen at high altitudes. It is the only place in the world where you
could have a frost bite and a heat stroke in the same day. Drink more water." - Janak Mistry,

One of the 1000 places to see before you die!

"A lot has been written & lot has been said about this heaven on earth, but it is less! Reading
will not give enough, one has to travel to experience & feel its magic!!
After visiting Ladakh, Ive realised that the best time to visit is after April if going for the first time.
Though it is a very beautiful place but the cold & the altitude, if not habitual, will kill & one will not
be able to admire & enjoy its beauty to the fullest. Also, the time my husband & I went to Leh,
life had just started to function normally after the harsh winters, half of the shops, restaurants,
hotels were closed & the markets just beginning to open up. Most of the lakes are frozen &
Page 5/21

accessibility becomes a major problem. Then the only option is to spend most of the time in the
hotel, eat in the hotel & watch the beauty from the room window!
Leh has so much to offer in terms of tourism. It is a haven for photographers & also for wildlife
lovers alike. There is great birdlife & one can find some rare species like the Black necked
crane. Before planning a holiday in Leh, one must be sure of a couple of things:
1. It will be cold. It is an arid cold desert with micro-climate & very windy at times. It becomes hot
in the day & can shower in the night. One can never predict the climate, so come prepared!
2. Due to the high altitude, it is imperative to rest the first day to get acclimatised to the weather
& height. Take it easy the first day, rest, eat well & spend time in the hotel.
3. It is better to book hotels & transport beforehand. There are several options online, choose
by reading reviews of other travellers. Please do not depend on public or local transport.
4. Food is available easily & of most of the important international cuisines. But make sure to
explain before one order.
5. People are friendly & helpful but conservative. Mind ones behaviour in public be it in attire,
physical gesture or attitude.
6. Ladakh is famous for its colourful festivals with huge costume dances & music. Check the
dates online & if possible visit during that time. It will be an experience in its own." - Monica

Leh : Best place to visit in India!

"We left for Leh towards the end of April last year, we were a bit too early as the winters were
almost about to end and the summers had yet not started. The Srinagar-Leh highway is mostly
closed during this period so we ended up taking a flight from Delhi to Leh. Leh Airport being a
military airport is operational only for 4-5 hours during the day. I believe there are 2-3 early
morning flights operating from Delhi to Leh. The flight takes roughly an hour to reach Ladakh
from Delhi.
As you get closer to Leh you will start to see snow capped mountains, the view from is just
lovely, so if travelling by flight try and get a window seat. The airport itself is located in a valley
so the last 20 minutes or so of the flight is just breathtaking. It is recommended to rest for a day
when your travelling Leh, the body takes its time to get adjusted to the altitude, it is
recommended to consult you family doctor and keep some medicines which can be taken to get
accustomed to the weather in Leh.
We stayed in a hotel quite close to the market however it was not centrally heated which made
sleeping in the night very difficult. Temperatures in April end May might go down to zero degree
so again it is recommended that if your travelling during this season you stay in a centrally
Page 6/21

heated hotel. Next day we decided to take a city tour, there are a couple of monasteries which
are a must visit especially Thiksey and Hemis.
Next day we set off to Pangong lake - The famous lake which many of us have seen in the
movie 3 idiots. Ladakh trip without a visit to this beautiful and serene lake. The route passes
through the Changla pass so even the journey is exciting. If your lucky you might end up seeing
snowfall when passing through Changla. Also don't forget to eat maggi at the Pangong Lake!
Although we did not go to Nubra valley, but if you are fond of sand dunes and a ride on double
humped camel you should definitely go to Nubra valley, You would need minimum 2 days for
Nubra valley. Next is Khardung-la pass, which is arguably the highest motorable road in the
world, although we couldn't go there as a result of a massive snow fall a day before but it is also
one of the major attractions of Leh.
In the end I would like to day that Leh is supposedly one of the best places to visit in India,
June-July is the best time to visit Leh, the climate is warmer and you get to do all the adventure
sports." - Kunal Agrawal, Mumbai, Mar 24, 2014

Magnificiant Leh
"This Ladakhi word works like magic in breaking ice with the locals in Leh or, for that matter,
anywhere in Ladakh. Couple it with a smile and you could Julley your way through Ladakh.
So Ladakh has been talked about by many and not one person whos been there would say
that he/she has been disappointed. This is a place that is unique in its beauty and unparalleled
in its serenity.
Now the best as well as the more-in-rage way to get to Leh is by road. This medium of
travelling makes you a part of a most breathtaking journey whether on the Srinagar-Leh route or
the Manali-Leh one. One can expect to pass through delightful ranges and sites that will only
make you wonder what Leh, your destination, could have in store. Taking a flight from Delhi,
Chandigarh, Jammu or Srinagar isnt a bad option either. In fact, this flight would be like none
other. Do insist on taking a window seat as visible from the aircraft are some of the most
magnificent sights including the Tso-Moriri Lake and the Zanskar River. Take my word when I
say that you would nearly want to touch the ranges of the Himalayas and the Karakoram.
Once there, dont neglect the good old advice of acclimatizing for at least two days.
Acclimatization is very important in areas of such height and one mustnt risk messing their
health up. Now Leh is a small but charming town. Dotting the city are numerous adventure
shops, travel companies, mountain-bicycle shops, taxis, garden restaurants, terrace restaurants
and more. The sweeping number of international tourists makes them practically look like the
second largest segment of the population. One can look forward to carrying back fond
memories of English-speaking shopkeepers calling you in to their attractive, well-doing shops
selling jewellery, trinkets, shawls, and tons of other knickknacks. Guest-houses are available in
plenty in Leh, their prices starting from a reasonable Rs 500 per day. Also explore the many
eating joints that serve not only typical Ladakhi cuisine but also continental, Lebanese and
Page 7/21

Greek. Taxis can be found in plenty and if youre in for some adventure, go ahead and rent a
bike.
Sight-seeing in Ladakh is a very rewarding experience as this is a place that offers so much to
see, learn and enjoy. Within the main periphery of Leh, one must visit the Tsomo Gompa, the
Leh Palace, the Hall of Fame and the Shanti Stupa. Of these, the latter two are definitely
recommended. While you could go through the gallant stories of war heroes in the Hall of
Fame, Shanti Stupa puts forth a landscape that is one in a million. Testimony to this would be
the tourists who come here only to sit back, watch the landscape and maybe even meditate!
You could also pack in the Zorawar Fort, which now accommodates only army barracks.
A spectacular thing about visiting Ladakh is that the ride to the other various sites wouldnt
disappoint you in the least. You can expect to be faced with sturdy and striking mountains that
compel you to marvel at their beauty. So while youre on this drive, make sure youre heading to
the Hemis Gompa, Thiksey Monastery and the Stok Palace. While the first is the largest and the
wealthiest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh, the latter is the current residence of the ousted royal
family. The Magnetic hill, Patharsaab Gurudwara, Nanak Hill and the Sangam between the
Indus and the Zanskar River are must-sees as well.
This being just in and around Leh, there are three other impressive places that are quite out of
this world but at a distance from the main city. The first is the Khardung-la top, also popularly
known as K-Top. Standing at a height of 18380 feet, Khardung-la is the worlds highest
motorable road. Once there, make sure you buy yourself some souvenirs. The second is the
Nubra Valley, a cold desert where youre sure to spot a lot of double-humped camels. Finally,
head to the Pangong-Tso (Pangong Lake), one of the largest brackish lakes in Asia. Situated at
a height of 14000 feet, the lake is 130km long, 45 km of which lies in India while the remaining
stays in China. Shaded from an ink blue to a turquoise to an aquamarine to a purple to other
brilliant colours, you have to see it to believe it. No description or praise of the lake is enough
until you see it with your own naked eye. Gorge on some hot Maggi and youre done! Though
that isnt the only incredible thing about the trip to Pangong. Before Pangong, bask in the glory
of reaching Chang-La, the worlds third highest pass, standing at a height of 17586 feet.
Wildlife enthusiasts can go crazy in Ladakh. The animals to be spotted range from the ibex,
marmots and wild ass to double humped camels, yaks and mountain goats (including
pashmina).
All in all, travelling to Leh can be a most cherished experience. There is so much to take back
and so much to miss when youre finally home. The amalgamation of culture and nature with
civilization is interesting. If possible, one must try to visit in the month of August-September so
as to catch the 15-day Ladakh festival. That would surely be the icing on your cake.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Main Bazaar has a few sweet shops selling samosas, chana
dhal with puri, and other Indian food in addition to the sweets. The shopping areas of the old
town and the area around the bus station are good for Tibetan styled restaurants, although few
Page 8/21

offer more than thukpa (noodle soup) and momos (dumplings). Vegetarian dishes are difficult to
find in these places.
Lamayuru Restaurant
German bakery
MonaLisa on the Old Fort Road offers good non indian cuisine at pretty affordable rates. Try
their pizzas and momos.
You can enjoy some great fresh baked breads with honey and cheese in the main market of
Leh.
Main Bazar has a decent selection of mid range Tibetan styled restaurants, popular with tourists
and locals. In the summer numerous garden restaurants spring up in Changspa serving
Tibetan, Western, and Indian dishes. Also, OpenHand Shop and Cafe around the Old Fort
Road has good South African, and Continental Cuisine. The place also has good western
coffee, and some good Indian Textiles.
There is little in the way of nightlife in Leh. You can order a beer at many of the restaurants, but
they close fairly early. For a more adventurous alternative, ask around the old town (or your
guest house owner) for Chang the local home brew beer. It goes for about 15 INR for a liter;
bring your own bottle.
There are a few springs scattered around Leh that provide a natural and plastic free alternative
to using bottled water.
Clean filtered and boiled water is available from shops, such as the organic food shop, and
guest houses.
Happy World Restaurant (Happy World Restaurant), Zangsti Road (situated in the corner of
Zangsti Road, and Fort Road beside the rivulet). Don't miss Happy World Restaurant, situated
in the corner of Zangsti Road, and Fort Road beside the rivulet. All types of food, and they are
really good.
Activities & things to do: SeeFor such a historic site and popular tourist destination, Leh has
surprisingly few tourist sights:
The former Palace of the King of Ladakh (admission 100rps). The most noticeable building in
Leh, the palace was built in the 17th century, and now undergoing restoration. There's not much
to see on the inside, but there are good views outside.
Buddhist temples:
Namgyal Tsemo Gompa - above the Palace, built 1430, is only open from 7AM-9AM during the
morning puja.
Soma Gompa - just around the corner from Main Bazar, it\'s a large modern gompa. It's also the
location of the Ladakhi Buddhist Association, a conservitive political orginisation, with ties to
Hindutva groups.
Page 9/21

Karma Dupgyud Choeling - monastery in the Karma Kagyu tradition

The small mosque
Shanti Stupa : built by a Japanese Buddhist group. This modern stupa is somewhat kitschy, but
still worth a visit.
Pangong Tso A beautiful high altitude lake at 4350 meters with deep blue waters, surrounded
by tall mountain peaks. This lake lies on the Indo - China boundary, with only one fourth of the
lake being in India. The road to this lake passes through Chang-la pass , claimed to be at 5425
meters. It's a five hour drive (149 Kms) from Leh to this place. There is also a small camp on
the way where a Yak Safari can be done. The passage is also very tough to cross by car. So a
four-wheel drive car is recommended. Experienced bikers should not have any problem. Day
return trips from Leh avoid the AMS issue , but you won't be able to see much during the your
60 minutes stay there .Overnight trips directly from Leh is outside safety guidelines . The safe
and comfortable option is to plan this trip at the end of your stay in Leh , and with a overnight
stop at Tangtse (altitude 3950) .
Monasteries in Ladakh : Most travellers use Leh as a base to visit the numerous gompas , the
Buddhist monasteries of Ladakh.
War Museum (War Museum, Leh). Fascinating place run by the Indian Army showcasing the
history, glory and the tools of the trade related to army operations defending India in some of
the most hostile terrain in the world. It also has a fascinating display on the Siachen battlefield the highest and more arduous battlefield in the world.
Donkey Sanctuary (Home for helpless donkeys), The sanctuary is situated just off the road
leading to Khardungla Pass. The public is encouraged to visit the sanctuary and friendly signs
will direct you to the sanctuary from the center of Leh. It is no more than a pleasant 5 to 10
minute stroll from the main road to the Sanctuary and the artistic surprise awaiting you is well
worth the effort. It is open to the public throughout the day and donations and juicy carrots are
most welcome and used exclusively for improving the lives and welfare of these wonderful
animals.
[edit][add listing] DoLeh is the place to prepare for a trekking in Ladakh, which offers a huge
number of possible trekking routes.
White-water rafting : on the Zaskar and Indus rivers is also organised from Leh. Please be
advised that the Indus rafting route from Nimmu towards the Pakistani border has rapids of
increasing severity which run along the grades of 4, 4+, and 5; the latter two grades being not
for the very faint of heart.
Nubra Valley. From Leh, you can hire a car and drive over the highest motorable pass in the
world, Kardung-La, to the Nubra Valley. You will need an 'Inner-LIne Permit' from the
government to travel to this area. The Nubra Valley is at the base of the Karakorum Range.
Within the valley are the Hundar Sand Dunes, well worth seeing. You can hire a 2-humped
Bactrian camel there for 300 rupees and take a ride, great fun!
BuddhismThere are several places in and around Leh where visitors are welcome to study the
Buddha Dharma, either privately or in a class environment. The Mahabodi Society on
Changspa Lane is one of the most active of these.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Please intake lot of water.
Page 10/21

for first 2 days relax and take adequate sleep

don't allow yourself to get dehydrated. Many people take the water thing too far, imho.
Avoid alcohol if you are planning to trek. Also coffee. But tea is fantastic and plentiful.
Wash hands before and after meal with soap. Probably the most important tip. There are wash
sinks in the restaurants and foreign tourists hardly ever use them but the locals do.
Buy your water from the two boiled water shops. Just ask people where they are when you get
there. Its cheaper than bottled water too and will help keep the plastic rubbish problem down.
If trekking, take some alchol hand gel for hand washing in places where the conveniences are
limited. Use detergents when you wash your dishes, but don't put them in the streams. Take the
water away from the stream to rinse off your plates. Do not put any soapls or detergents in the
streams.
Do not leave any rubbish, however small in the environment. Burn it or take it back to town.
Take usual small travellers first aid kit.
Take lip balm, sunblock, decent hat (not a cap) to prevent sunburn and dry skin.
I can't comment on the weather with any precision. Someone else will or do a search." - Girish
