NOTICE FOR NEW POSTGRADUATE CANDIDATES

FOLLOWING THE RESEARCH MODE


INTAKE SEMESTER 1 2007/2008
All new postgraduate candidates following the research mode (Masters and Doctor of
Philosophy) are required to take note of the following:

(1) Seminar Presentation and Candidature Defence

(a)
Candidates for Masters by research mode are required to present their research
progress in a seminar at least once during their candidature period as follows:

( i ) one seminar presentation during the minimum period of candidature (i.e. the
first 2 semesters of the candidature); and
( ii ) a candidature defence session for the candidate on the third semester of the
candidature. Candidates who receive unsatisfactory progress reports and fail in
the candidature defence may have their candidature terminated.
(b)

Doctor of Philosophy candidates are required to present their research progress in a


seminar at least twice during their candidature period as follows:
( i ) a seminar presentation during the minimum period of candidature (i.e. the first
4 semesters of the candidature);
( ii ) a candidature defence session for the candidate on the fifth semester of the
candidature. Candidates who receive unsatisfactory progress reports and fail in
the candidature defence may have their candidature terminated.

(2) Paper Presentation in National / International Conferences by Masters Candidates


Candidates for Masters by research mode are required to present papers on their
research at least once in a national / international conference. However, if the candidate
has already published papers on his or her research, he or she may be exempted from
this requirement.
(3) Refereed Publications and Paper Presentation at National/International
Conferences
by Doctor of Philosophy candidates
(a) PhD candidates are required to publish their research work in at least one refereed
publication. For this purpose, refereed publication includes publication in

international or professional proceedings.


(b)

All PhD candidates are encouraged to present papers on their research in national /
international conferences.

(4) Research Methodology Course (3 credit hours)


(a) All postgraduate candidates following the research mode are required to follow at
least 3 credit hours of Research Methodology Course (according to the needs of the
programme) to assist them in their preparation for research.
(b)
Research Methodology Course will be offered every semester and candidates are
required to follow the course during the beginning of their candidature (not later
than the second semester of the candidature).
