GRIZZLY FLATS If youve ever

been camping or out for a good
hike amid Northern Californias mighty redwoods, looked
up and thought to yourself, I
wonder what itd be like to soar
through the air at tree height
while suspended from a cable
200 feet above the ground?, you
can now sate your curiosity with
the Clear Creek Canopy Zip
Line Tour at Leoni Meadows.
The Clear Creek Canopy zip
line course spans a seven line
cable network at Leoni Meadows Christian Camp and Retreat
Center, located about 25 miles
east of Placerville near Grizzly
Flats. Varying cable lines rigged
up through the trees allow the
intrepid nature lover to soar at
varying heights across valleys,
canyons, and above treetops
over a flowing creek from station to station under the watchful eye and instruction of experienced guides.
I went to Leoni Meadows to
experience the zip line first
hand where I met up with zip
line guide George Alikin and
veteran zip liners Chris Pappas and Roger Cain. Along
with my newly discovered fear
of heights, I found exhilaration, thrills, beautiful scenery and an experience I would
happily repeat. As Alikin puts
it, the appeal of the zip line is
multi-faceted.
I find the appeal of it is that
Im outdoors, you get a thrill,
Alikin said. Even for me, and
Ive zip lined probably 500
times, its still fun every time I
do it.
After our first run I confronted a heretofore latent fear of
heights when we landed at a station high above the ground, a
wooden platform built around a
fairly large tree. Attached to the
cable wires and harness mechanisms, there was the sense of
mild security that if nothing
else, should the whole thing
come crashing down wed be

Alikin assured me that we were
perfectly safe. In fact, the zip
line cables are strong enough
to hold a small truck, and the
recommended weight requirements for use goes up to 280 lbs.,
well above any of the stress our
group was putting on the cables.
Heights aside, the thrill combined with the views of sprawling treetops and crashing water is breathtaking. Alikin concludes that the zip line provides a unique opportunity.
Theres different factors,
Alikin said. Its beautiful to
go out on the zip lines. Theyre
still a thrill even when you do it
dozens of times. As far as guidingits really fun to meet new
people. I think thats the most
fun part, when I bring groups
out and see their joy.

The zip lines are ideal for all

Leoni Meadows hosts their utilization by business groups, offices and campers alike. For

f you are looking for some adventure this summer, whitewater rafting may be the thrill
you having missing from your

The Foothills is home to
some of the best whitewater
rafting on earth and we are so
lucky to have such a pristine
river in our area to do thrilling
outdoor experiences on.
Make an appointment with

go down the river at 2,000 cubic-feet per second.
It is a fantastic way to enjoy nature, see the river and
add a splash of fun to your
life, said Deric Rothe, the

For those, like me, or are
scared of whitewater rafting
and think it is dangerous, it
actually isnt. About 75,000
people went rafting last summer and injuries are very rare.

Rafting is safer than driving

on the freeway, Rothe said.
Sometimes people fall out,
and they take a swim, but we

boat, he said.
One thing to remember if
you plan on rafting is to wear

sunscreen. It is encouraged to
wear sunglasses, a hat, shorts

mind getting wet, a smile and
enthusiasm, he said.
This coming summer is expected to have the best rafting in a few years from all of
the rain and snow we have
had.
Whitewater rafting will
be the highlight of your summer, Rothe said.

VISIT A MUSEUM
Folsom Powerhouse

The Folsom Powerhouse is part of a

colorful chapter of Sacramento history
and is also an example of the tremendous advance in the commercial application of electricity.
In 1895, the Folsom Powerhouse successfully transmitted electricity 22
miles to a power substation in Sacramento. The powerhouse was the nations first power plant to provide
high-voltage current over long distance
lines for major city and industrial use.
Today, the Folsom Powerhouse is the
only nearly intact 19th-century hydroelectric plant open to the public.
The Folsom Powerhouse is located in
the Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park at 9980 Greenback Lane in Folsom. For more information, go to parks.
ca.gov, or call (916) 985-4843.
Folsom Railroad Museum

The Folsom Railroad Museum is located in Historic Folsom and is a great

place to visit if you are interested in
learning about how the railroad helped
created the California we know today.
At this museum you will learn about
the first railroad west of the Rockies
and who built it. This railroad stretches
all the way to Sacramento and has been
here since 1856.
The museum is open on weekends
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at
198 Wool St. For more information, go

the Gold Country region. With so
many options available in the area,
choosing just one trail can be difficult, a good problem to have for any
outdoor enthusiast. One solution
is the All Trails app which judges
trails by difficulty rating and user

schematics of the trail which can
help a hiker or cyclist decide based
on what they want to get out of the
experience.
I explored the Sweet Water Trail
in the El Dorado Hills area, Browns
Ravine just up the road from Folsom, and Averys Pond in Newcastle. Many of these hikes do have
State Park parking lots where payment or a pass is required, however, with a little extra walking, free
parking is easy to find. All of these
hikes are within 30 minutes drive
from Folsom and are near Folsom
Lake.
The Sweet Water Trail is rated as
a moderate trail for hiking, an out
and back style dirt path along a
lake. The danger of the trail is its
heavy concentration of poison oak.

form of independence, giving us
entertainment and transportation
all in one. Today, the popularity of
partaking in the travel of the twowheeled nature has grown well beyond the days of riding to your childhood friends house, to the local
candy store or on your paper route.
Whether it is for exercise, leisure or
sport, cycling has become lifestyle
in the City of Folsom.
The City of Folsom offers one of
the best cycling venues in the region.
Whether its a casual ride with the
family on the many miles of paved
trails throughout the city, venturing off road to enjoy a trail ride with
friends, or participating in a group
ride, Folsom rises well beyond its
motto of being distinctive in nature
for its cycling amenities.

Road Cycling

When it comes to road cycling in

the area, the City of Folsom boasts
hundreds of miles of options. In Folsom alone, over 30 miles of trail are
designated Class I Bike Paths that are
all very well maintained. In addition
to the network of Class I Paths, more
than 67 miles of local riding territory
consists of quality Class II Bike Paths
that share the real estate with plenty
of room between the rider and traffic
throughout the city.
Factor in the more than 30 miles
of paved trails known as the Amer-

ican River Bike Trail that extend well

out of the city and it becomes clear
that Folsom offers more miles in designated road cycling opportunities than
one person can accomplish in a day.
There is a variety of scenery along the
routes from the streams and scenes of
the Willow Humbug Creek network of
trails to those that parallel the American River, such as the popular Natomas Loop. And there are others that
go through the areas Historic District
and can connect a rider to downtown
Sacramento.

While road cycling amenities and

host city for the Amgen Tour dominate
the local headlines, the Folsom area also offers great off road options for area
mountain bikers looking to get off the
beaten path. From many of the designated paved trails, one can veer off to
enjoy miles of single track that will take
them on a scenic ride through the areas
of Willow Creek, down along the American River and around Folsom Lake.
Here, riders will find themselves traveling through Folsom, Granite Bay and
even into El Dorado County in one single venture that travels around the lake
and much of its forested shorelines.
One popular local ride is the Granite
Bay Trail. Located on the north shore of
the lake, the Granite Bay Trail is a great
place for beginning riders and families
to enjoy single-track riding that isnt too
daunting or challenging. Smooth trails
with very little extended climbing and
inclines provide for an enjoyable ride
that is fun for all, while still offering a
good share of mild technical areas. By
riding through the different arteries,
one can extend the distance of this ride
up to as much as 12 miles.
Another ride along the lake is the Dike
8 Browns Ravine Trail. This 3.5-mile
single-track ride is great for even the
novice cyclist. It begins at Folsom Point
and takes you across the Morman Island
auxiliary dam, also known as Dike 8.

Once you cross the dam you will enjoy

rolling single-track trails for 3 to 4 miles
into Browns Ravine. Like many, this is a
very populated multi-use trail, so keeping your eyes out for walkers, equestrians and others is a must.
If youre looking for a more challenging
off road ride, a fun ride that will take you
through some local history is the nearby Skunk Hollow Trail. The trailhead
for this ride can be found just across the
street from the Salmon Falls recreation
parking area. The trail is mostly single
track with a good amount of rocky technical sections and downhill that eventually leads you to a beautiful open valley
where several turn of the century ranch
buildings are still standing.
To top off a few of the local favorite
mountain bike rides, the Salmon Falls
ride is a must for the avid enthusiast. Also known as the Darrington Trail, this
ride is well known in the area. It is 16
miles in length in and back, and while
the trail shares real estate with hikers
and horses, it is mostly populated by
cyclists. The start of the trail is a bit intimidating and rocky and known for its
share of trips over the handlebars. Many riders walk their bike through the
first section to avoid a spill. Its well
worth the walk for those that enjoy the
combination of technical rocky terrain,
single track, fire roads and a share of
high speed downhill.

Off to the races

yndon Johnson was our president, a gallon of milk was just 31 cents and Sonny and Cher had little hit song titled I Got You Babe. The year was 1965
and something new was coming to life in El Dorado County, the sport of auto
racing. Fifty-one years later, the roar of engines and the cheer of a wide-eyed
crowd is commonplace on Saturday nights at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds
in Placerville.
With the spring season upon us, the green flag has flown once again at Placerville Speedway. What started as a community football field back in 1956 and
transformed into a quarter-mile dirt race track in the summer of 1965, is now
known as one El Dorado Countys hot spots for family entertainment on Saturday nights between the months of April and October.
For anyone who has never been to a dirt track race, its an experience to behold,
with several classes of cars and both men and women behind the wheel from all
walks of life. Teenagers to seniors and everything in between; all from different

professions, living as weekend warriors or choosing to race professionally.

Some of the thrills include winged sprint cars boasting over 700 horsepower
traveling sideways at extreme speeds, riding on the narrow edge of triumph and
disaster, often navigating their way through fields of 20 cars or more.
This class of car has berthed a handful of drivers that from the likes of Placerville Speedway to the sports highest levels. Current NASCAR star Kyle Larson of
Elk Grove cut his teeth in the sport of racing at this facility, earning his first win
aboard a sprint car here in 2007. Others include Paul McMahan, an Elk Grove native and Brad Sweet of Grass Valley who honed their careers here and today compete in the nationally known World of Outlaws tour that travels the country and
returns to their home track one time annually.
These are just sampling of what can be experienced every Saturday at Placerville Speedway. The facility hosts 24 events in 2016. In addition to the three weekly divisions, many traveling groups complete the program throughout the year.
This year, Placerville Speedway begins a new era in the way of track management with local residents Scott Russell and Kami Arnold taking the wheel of operations under the banner of RMI Incorporated. This duo has deep roots in the local
sport and are looking to continue traditions while improving many aspects of the
weekly program to focus on strong family entertainment value.
The previous promoters of this track went to great lengths to build a strong
foundation centered around families, Arnold said. Our goal is to continue those
long-standing traditions and provide great, affordable family entertainment.
One such tradition at Placerville Speedway is their famed handmade corn dogs
that have been a fan favorite over the last 50 years. Hand dipped in freshly made
corn meal batter each race night, these piping hot treats are sold as fast as they
come out of the fryer.
The new season has begun at Placerville Speedway and the schedule of events
includes many special nights including the annual Fourth of July Spectacular and
the famed Kids Night among many. Ticket prices vary according to the event on
tap and details can be found on the track website at www.placervillespeedway.
