iBook: Product Design and Development
Masni Azian binti Akiah
Fakulti Kejuruteraan Pembuatan
Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka
masni.azian@utem.edu.my
Abstract
The Product Design and Development course focuses on the integration of marketing,
design and manufacturing function within a firm towards developing a new product.
Various methods are introduced throughout each development phases towards
ensuring successful product that is accepted by the targeted market. Current execution
of the course involves lecture sessions emphasizing principles and theories of product
design while the students are required to work in group to produce a working product
using available facilities at the faculty. The progress of the project moves concurrently
with the lecture sessions in classroom. Although various product development methods
have been introduced, but it was observed that the implementation for each method
for different kind of product could not be explored in-depth due to constrain in
covering all chapters during lecture hours. Therefore, a preliminary interactive content
of chapter 1 for Product Design and Development course are developed using iBook
Author application. The chapter covers an overview of critical phases in product design
and development activity, various ways of finding opportunities towards product
innovation, different type of project organization structure in the industry and its specific
function for each critical phase. Development of interactive media in teaching and
learning activity is expected to engage wider range of students and enhance users
learning experience which allows students to learn at their own pace.

jelas.

Abstract
This iBook covers the basics of Computer Aided Design using Solidworks 2011. The
general process of design and manufacturing an object starts from a single idea which is
then translated into a computer model using any CAD software, showing the complete
design and features. Several parts are combined to become assemblies depicting our
intended object. Finally, a technical drawing is produced from the CAD model that will
be used for manufacturing. Chapter 1 discusses the concept of 3D modeling and an
introduction to the software: Solidworks 2011. Chapter 2 will introduce the user to Part
Modeling which includes sketching and applying features. At the end of the iBook, the
user should be able to design and model 3D parts using Solidworks 2011.

Abstract
Most institutions of Higher Learning develop Learning Management System (LMS) for
lecturers and students to manage their academic activities. The objective of this paper
is to analyze the perceptions and attitudes of lecturers towards the usage of Curriculum
Information Document Online System (CIDOS) at Malaysian Polytechnics. A set of
questionnaire was designed and given to a total of 83 lecturers from Politeknik Ungku
Omar (PUO), Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz (PSA) and Politeknik Seberang Perai
(PSP). Based on the findings, half of the respondents were using CIDOS in their teaching
and learning while the others preferred traditional style of teaching and learning in
classroom. The results also showed that most of them lacked time in managing the
system while others showed a mixed reaction in that CIDOS was user friendly yet too
complex and difficult to use.

Pelajar turut mencadangkan agar pendekatan pembelajaran aktif turut
diperluaskan dalam subjek-subjek yang lain.

Abstract
It is difficult a graduate person to get hired with the fierce competition in the career
market today. Now, most employers are looking for good soft skills as the primary selection
criteria for choosing the employee than their academic achievement. This study aims
to determine the collaborative learning strategy based on lecturer preferences in
Malaysia Polytechnic. In this study, two types of instruments used were questionnaires
and semi-structured interviews. A set of questionnaire was personally administrated
to 145 lecturers from Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Politeknik Merlimau, Politeknik Tuanku
Syed Sirajuddin, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu and Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah. And several
interview sessions with the head of programme have been conducted to provide a
depth of information. All collected data had been analyzed using SPPS 19 software.
The result showed that Polytechnic lecturers preferred to use project / assignment
base strategy in their collaborative learning process compared to other Collaborative
Learning strategies.

Abstract
This paper presents the continuous quality improvement (CQI) on the delivery of
coursework. Problem-based learning (PBL) is used to enhance the student centered
learning (SCL) approach. The feedback from the students is analyzed in terms of
classroom assessment, instructor performance, coursework evaluation and peer
appraisal. A group project is introduced to the students in which they are required to
design, analyze and fabricate a simple functional engineering mechanical system. This
project is one of the practices for PBL where students have to show their teamwork,
hands-on, management and communication skills. The course final grades and outcome
based education results reflect the performance of the students. Students satisfactory
and teaching effectiveness are also evaluated. The effectiveness of teaching practice
for technical course is demonstrated and validated through the feedback analysis,
reliability of the instrument and the final course achievements.
