teammate Armstrong last June. But when the two make their
return to Nevada City on Sunday for the opening stage of the

In 2009, the BISSELL Pro Cycling Team was consistently on the
podium at top domestic stage races such as Mt. Hood, Nature Valley
Grand Prix, Fitchburg Classic, Tour of Utah and Tour of Missouri,
and dominated the team classification at many races in the US.
The BISSELL Team showed its strength as the finest domestic team,
finishing second in the team classification at the Tour of Missouri.
The BISSELL Team finished second in the NRC team standings.
For 2010, the team will continue to rely on the experience and
maturity of the team leaders Ben Jacques-Maynes and Frank Pipp.
Additionally this year, the team has focused on strengthening their

The BMC Racing Team expanded considerably in 2009 in its
fourth season overall and second in the professional continental
division. The acquisition of world road race champion Cadel
Evans, past world road race champion Alessandro Ballan, U.S.
national road champion George Hincapie and U.S. national
criterium champion John Murphy brought new attention to the
team, which is headquartered in Santa Rosa, Calif. Sponsored by
Switzerland-based bicycle manufacturer BMC, the team also was
awarded wild card status, earning it the right to be invited to races
on both the UCI ProTour schedule and the Historic Monuments
of Cycling calendar.

Tour de France stage winner Heinrich Haussler will lead Cervélo
at the Amgen Tour of California this year. Cervélo is home to 2008
Tour de France champion Carlos Sastre, as well as multiple-time
British cyclocross and road champion Roger Hammond and 2003
Ghent-Wevelgem winner Andreas Kleier. American Ted King and
Canadian Dominique Rollin made their European debuts with the
team in 2009, the latter after winning stage 4 in California out
of a breakaway the previous year. The team has battled injuries in
early 2010, losing Haussler and Kleier for the spring classics, and
will look to turn their luck around in the golden state. Cervélo is
the world’s largest manufacturer of time trial and triathlon bikes,
as determined in industry counts including decisive wins for the
past four years at the prestigious Kona bike count.

In 2007, the team’s directors decided to create an International
Australian cycling team. The vision for the team is to create
Australia’s first ProTour team. Initially the focus for the team
was the Australian domestic “National Series,” and then in 2008
an 8-week block of racing in the United States supplemented
the Australian component. In 2009, the team expanded its
racing schedule in the United States and raced from January to
September, in addition to the Australian component.
Rather than go direct to Europe, the team sees the U.S. as a
doorway to Europe with many of the attributes required to
be successful in Europe acquired and honed while in the U.S.
As a team they have a long-term view of being part of the U.S.
peloton. In 2010, the team has created a development team
that is vertically integrated and known as the Virgin Blue – RBS
Morgans Team. In addition to experienced general management,
the team has a significant amount of skills and experience in the
form of Henk Vogels, Ed Beamon and Patrick Jonker, who act as
the senior operations management.

Garmin-Transitions has proven to be one of the best teams in the
world, and it will return to the Amgen Tour of California with an
impressive squad including David Zabriskie, who ranked second
overall in the 2009 Amgen Tour of California and is currently the
U.S. National Time Trial Champion.
Garmin-Transitions features 10 Americans among a total of 28
riders from 11 different countries. Christian Vande Velde finished
eighth overall in the 2009 Tour de France despite suffering five
broken vertebra and a fractured pelvis and rib in a crash at the
Giro d’Italia. Also returning to the squad are sprint sensations
Tyler Farrar, Dan Martin, Ryder Hesjedal and David Millar. New
additions include World Time Trial Champion Jack Bobridge,
two-time top-ten finisher of Paris-Roubaix Johan Van Summeran
and sprinter Robbie Hunter who started off his season with a
bang, winning two stages at Murcia in early 2010. And true to
its mission of developing the next generation of champions, the
team has called up Kirk Carlsen and Peter Stetina from Team
Holowesko Partners, its U23 development team. In California,
look for extremely aggressive riding and stage wins from this
talented group of young professionals. The team’s fearless riding
style, along with its distinctive orange and blue argyle clothing
has made the squad a favorite with fans and media alike.
The team, based out of Colorado, is sponsored by Garmin, a

dedicated to promoting ethical sporting and developing the next
generation of cycling champions.

2009 was a very successful year for the squad, as they posted
exciting stage wins in the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, Vuelta
a España, Tour de Suisse and Amgen Tour of California, as well
as winning Milan San Remo. Team HTC-Columbia has been the
No. 1 team in the world for the last two years, winning more
races in 2008 and 2009 than any other team. Last year, the
men won 86 races and the women won 46, totaling 132 wins
by 22 different riders. Team HTC-Columbia seeks to create an
environment where success is achieved using the best methods,
technology and personal development tools found in the world
of sport. Their goals are to make change happen, to win by fair
means and represent the best aspects of sport.

include veteran climber Anthony Colby and time trail specialist

Kelly Benefit Strategies is a UCI American-registered team.
The team is owned and operated by Circuit Global Sports
Management, based in Minneapolis, Minn. The team enters
its fourth season with the strongest roster yet, retaining key
riders like David Veilleux, Scott Zwizanski, Alex Candelario and
Andrew Bajadali. The team also has added several young talents,
including Alex Boyd, Guy East, Ian Macgregor and Jesse Anthony.
In preparation for the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, the team
has expanded its international schedule, making appearances at
several Asian races, including the Tour de Langkawi, Tour of Korea
and the Tour of Thailand, as well as Tro Bro Leon and Le Tour de
Bretagne Cicliste.

For 2010, Team Liquigas-Doimo has high ambitions for the
Grand Tours. With four riders capable of competing for overall
victory, team directors are faced with a problem that many would
envy. Ivan Basso returned to racing in 2009 and quickly made
his presence known with an overall win at the Giro del Trentino.
An eventual fourth place at the Giro d’Italia was followed up
with the same result at the Vuelta. Basso heads into 2010 with
high aspirations, knowing that he has a strong team to support
him. Franco Pellizotti had a breakout year in 2009, with a stage
win and second place overall finish at the Giro d’Italia. In July,
Pellizotti put himself into many breaks and his gutsy performance
in the Tour de France’s high mountains netted him the Polka
Dot KOM Jersey, naming him the best climber. The 2009 Tour de
France also featured Liquigas’ two young aces, Roman Kreuziger
and Vincenzo Nibali. Kreuziger started the Tour with a stage and
overall win at the Tour of Romandie already under his belt. The
young Czech rider battled a stomach virus in the early stages and
eventually recovered to finish ninth in Paris. Nibali’s Tour saw the
young Sicilian climbing with the best riders in the world during
the Tour, finishing seventh overall. Much is expected of these two
riders in 2010.

 Know your bicycle racing vocabulary
Abandon — When a rider quits during a race.
Big Ringing It — A “big” gear when the rider has his chain on the
larger of the two front chainrings — allows a rider to go for maximum
speeds. This gearing is most often used on flat or rolling terrain.
Bonk — Total exhaustion caused by lack of sufficient food during a
long race or ride.
Bonus Sprints — On each stage, race organizers designate several
locations along the route where bonus points are given to the first three
riders that cross the line. These sprints create a “race within a race”
during each stage.
Breakaway — One or more riders who sprint away from the peloton
in an effort to build a lead. Competing riders in a breakaway will
often form uneasy alliances, working together and drafting to increase
or maintain their lead. Those alliances break down, though, as they
approach the finish. A team leader in a breakaway with multiple
teammates has a decided advantage over a rider who has no support.
Bridge — A rider or riders who sprint away from the main group of
riders, or peloton, and catch the breakaway.
Broom Wagon — The vehicle that follows the race, picking up racers
who have to abandon the race.
Caravan/Race Caravan — The official and team support vehicles in
a race. Each team has a car in the official race caravan. The team cars
follow the peloton and riders will often go back to their team car for
food, extra clothing, or to speak to their team director.
DNF — Short for “Did Not Finish”
Domestique — A rider whose main job is to help the team leader win
the day’s stage, or the entire race. A domestique may pull the leader up
to a breakaway, or pace them up a steep climb. If a team leader gets
a flat, a domestique may even be called upon to give up their front or
rear wheel and wait for the team mechanic, saving the leader precious
seconds.
Drafting — One or more riders ride single file behind another rider,
taking advantage of that rider’s slipstream. By doing so the rider behind
has less of a headwind and gets a breather. In a crosswind, riders may
ride in a diagonal line, instead. Drafting is the lynchpin of most bicycle
racing tactics. See also paceline.
Drop/Dropped — When a rider has been left behind by another rider
or group of riders.
Echappee — The cyclist who escapes from the pack. The ‘escapee’.
Echelon — A staggered, long line of riders, each downwind of the
rider ahead, allowing them to move considerably faster than a solo rider
or small group of riders. In windy sections where there are crosswinds, a
large peloton will form into echelons.
Equipe — A cycling team.
Feed Zone — A designated area along the route where riders can
grab “musette bags” filled with food and drinks as they ride by. There is
an unwritten rule in the peloton that riders should not attack the .field
while the riders are going through the feed zone
Lead Out — A racer’s teammate(s) form a paceline in front of the
leader, pulling hard for the finish. The supporting cast pulls off one at
a time, leaving the leader rested and fast for the last sprint. Leadouts
typically happen right before the finish line or sprint.
Mountain Climb Classifications — Large mountain climbs are
normally classified according to their difficulty. Category 4 is the easiest,
followed by Categories 3, 2, 1, and the Hors-Categorie (which is the
hardest). Mountain climbs are classified according to their length and
the average gradient of the road’s incline.
Off the Back — When a rider or riders cannot keep pace with the
main group and lag behind.
Off the Front — When a rider takes part in a breakaway.
Paceline — A formation of two or more riders who are drafting.
Typically, racers take turns doing the hard work at the front of the line.
Peloton — The main group of racers. With its dozens of colorful jerseys,
maneuvering for position and breakneck speeds, the peloton can be
quite a sight. Also called the pack.
Point to Point Road Race — A one-day race in which the route
travels between two separate points. The most prestigious of these races
are known as “Classics”
Popped — Blown; Had it; Knackered; Stuffed; Words used to describe
the legs losing all power.
Prologue — One type of beginning for a stage race, which is a
relatively short time trial.

Circuit Race — A multiple-lap race around a course of 2 miles or
more. Circuit races are great crowd pleasers. In the 2008 Amgen Tour
of California, the final portion of stage 7 (and the entire tour) is a circuit
race. If you’re in or near Pasadena, CA on the 24th, don’t miss it!
Clincher — A traditional bicycle tire that is mounted on a rim with a
wire or kevlar bead. Clinchers are easy to replace or repair, but they and
their rims tend to weigh more than a tubular.
Col — A mountain pass or climb, such as ‘Col du Telegraph’.
Criterium — A multi-lap, one-day race on a closed, short course,
typically one mile or less
Derailleur — A mechanism for moving the chain from one sprocket to
another to change gears on a multi-speed bicycle.
Disc Wheel — A bicycle wheel with covers or a solid disc, rather than
open spokes. Disc wheels are very aerodynamic, but heavy, and can turn
into a sail in a strong crosswind.
Field Sprint — A mass sprint at the .finish among the main group of
riders in a road race.
Gap — The amount of time or distance between a rider or group of
riders and another rider or group of riders.
General Classification (G.C.) — The overall leader board in the race,
representing each rider’s total cumulative time in the race. The rider with
the lowest time is number one on the G.C.
Hammer — To ride hard. Also, to “put the hammer down”
Jump — A quick acceleration, which usually develops into a sprint.
King of the Mountains — The KOM is the fastest climber in the
overall standings. King of the Mountain is awarded to the racer who is
awarded points based on the many KOM sprints in the Tour. Look for
the KOM jersey in the race.
Lacher — Drop out or let go.
Road Rash — Skin abrasions resulting from a fall or crash onto the
road.
Saddle — The bike seat.
Schwag — The free stuff competitors get when they race. May include
water bottles, jerseys, food, or more expensive toys.
Slipstream — The area of least wind resistance behind a rider.
Sprint — A quick scramble for the finish line or a mid-race king of the
mountain or other competition. A professional road race sprint is fast,
furious and tactical. Watch for riders to jockey for the second or third
spot, or organize leadouts by their teammates.
Squirrel — A small rodent, but also a rider who is erratic and
‘squirrely’ when riding in a group.
Velo — French for “bicycle”

Road closures
On Sunday, May 16, beginning at 11:25 a.m., Grass Valley Police personnel
BBQ Cook-Off State
will temporarily close roads to ensure for the safety of pedestrians and event
participants attending the race. The road closures will include Alta Street Championship & Cowboy
Shooting Festival
(between Alta Vista Way and W. Main Street), W. Main Street (between
Townsend Street and S. Auburn Street), Mill Street (between W. Main Street
and Neal Street), Neal Street (between Mill Street and Hansen Way) and Colfax
Avenue (between Hansen Way and Race Street). The roads will re-open once all
pedestrian and event participant traffic has cleared. During the time leading up to PRESENTED BY
