Music is sound that is structured in such a way that it contains rhythm, song and harmony,
especially the sound of the instruments that produce sounds. Music is also a universal language
capable of speaking in the development of a variety of languages, capable hearts content
creators and reflect cultures from various parts of the world. For example, without us knowing
when we listen to music in foreign languages that we can not understand, even though we saw no
means most of us know that the music or the song contains the meaning of love, heartbreak, grief
and so on, as well as instrumental music, though without words, there is an aura of its own in it.
Music can also be grouped according to the similarity to one another which is called by the
music genre. In general, the music can also be grouped according to their uses, which can be
grouped into three major domains, namely, art music, popular music and traditional music.
Lately music has become the need of the society at large. Music can also affect a person, proved
the fashion trend, many music lovers who mimic the style of dress of the musicians that their
favorites. Until now there are a lot of music in society and the so-called popular music. There for
a number of musical genres in popular music that can be found in various parts of the world
because of the nature of the music that is almost acceptable to all of them, pop, rock, jazz and
others.
B. Problem Formulation
Based on the background mentioned above, it is in the writing of this paper the author will
discuss the following issues:
1. What definition of popular music?
2. What are the genres of music featured in popular music?
3. What is the history of every genre of music featured on popular music in the world?

DISCUSSION
A. Understanding Popular Music
Popular music is a type of music that is currently favored by the general public. Music is also a
kind of music that fits with the current state of the times, to fit in the ear most people.
Popular music refers to any of a number of musical genres that have broad appeal and are usually
distributed to large audiences through the music industry. This is contrary to both art music and
traditional music, which are typically disseminated academically or orally smaller, local
audiences. Although popular music sometimes is known as pop music, the two terms are not
interchangeable. Popular music is a generic term for music of all ages that appeals to popular
tastes, whereas pop music usually refers to a specific musical genre.
Several genres of music including popular music such as pop, rock, jazz and so on.
B. Genres of music featured on popular music
Music genre is a grouping of music according to its similarity to each other. Here are some
genres of music featured in popular music, including:
1. Pop music
Pop music originally derived from the term stands for "popular", is a musical genre of popular
music that originated in its modern form in the 1950s, derived from rock and roll. The terms
popular music and pop music are often used interchangeably, though the former is a description
of popular music (and can include any style), while the latter is a specific genre that contains
quality appeal period. This music has a characteristic, the use of rhythm that feels free to put the
game drum and bass guitar. Usually, the musicians also add to the attraction and appreciation of
the listener or audience. Rock music or rock music is a genre of popular music which emerged
generally in the mid 50s. Its roots come from rhythm and blues, country music from the 40 and
50s as well as a variety of other influences. Furthermore, rock music also took on a variety of
other musical styles, including folk music (folk music), jazz and classical music.
Rock music is also one of the genre in the world of popular music repertoire that is usually
dominated by vocals, guitar, drums, and bass. many also with the addition of instruments such
keyboad, piano and synthesizer. Rock music usually has a strong beat and dominated by guitars,
both electric and acoustic. Distinctive or characteristic sound of rock often revolves around the
electric guitar or acoustic guitar, and use a very subtle back beat in the rhythm section with bass
guitar and drums, and keyboards like organ, piano or since the 70s, syntheiser. Besides the guitar
or keyboards, saxophone and blues-style harmonica are sometimes used as a solo instrument. In

interesting.
Jazz is a type of music that grew out of the merger of Blues, Ragtime and European music,
particularly band music. Several subgenres are Dixieland jazz, Swing, Bebop, Hard Bop, Cool
Jazz, Fussion Jazz, Smooth Jazz, and Cafjazz. Musikini flow is also derived from the United
States in the early 20th century.
Characteristic of this music are:
a. Bluetonality, is a kind of rhythm that is more akin to the blues scale. This is because the
beginning of jazz music comes from the blues.
b. Swinging, swinging rhythm that feels like.

Keroncong is the name of a type of ukulele and musical instruments as well as the name of a
type of music that uses a typical Indonesian keroncong musical instruments, flute, and is one of

3. Jazz music
Jazz music was born in the United States in 1986. It is a diulis by researchers jazz history and
agreed upon by all parties. Although jazz was born in the United States, but now the nation's jazz
not only America, but has become a musical colors that are owned by the whole world.
Initially, jazz music was born with a basic Blues, then in about 1887 became known form of Reg
Time, which at that time was a piano in bars. Blues and Reg Time evolved into boogie-wooogie.
The forms are in addition to the track itself penetrated, also developed through the journey of
jazz music. The researchers suggested music, that sort of jazz that can be considered as an early
form that develops over time to shape the current jazz, is a form of jazz music that there are
about tahun1915-1957. At that time, the negro in the city of New Orleans, USA, plays jazz music

the United States and eventually spread to the rest of the world as it is today.
D. History of every genre of music featured on popular music in Indonesia.
History of every genre of music featured on popular music in Indonesia is described as follows:
1. Pop music
The history of pop music in Indonesia preceded by the presence of a band called Koes Plus. The
group was formed in 1969, as a continuation of the group "Koes Brothers". Koes Brothers
became pioneers of pop music and rock 'n roll, and even served jail time because the music is
supposed to represent the flow of capitalist politics. At that time were fierce-fierce anti-capitalist
movement in Indonesia.
Actually Koes Brothers songs better in terms of harmonization (such as the song "Silent Lake",
"Dewi Rindu" or the "School Bus") compared Koes Plus songs. Koes Plus group led by the late

2. Rock music

But before the 1970s, there was already a band called The Rollies, the jazz rock band formed in

(drums), Benny Likumahuwa (trombone), Delly Joko Arifin (keyboards / vocals), Bonny

The Rollies is Indonesia's oldest and rock groups, including the group's most often experience
