Current Wall Finish Trends

With so many options available to interior designers, from both industry
growth and across-the-board safety and sustainability standards, it is both
important, and challenging for them to constantly keep up with current wall
treatment and finish trends. This applies to both commercial and residential spaces.
According to Pro.com, a website created and run by professionals of service
industries, the current trends of today include: Pantones color of the year for paint,
nature-inspired treatments, including large stenciling and murals, floor treatments
place on walls, traditional and vintage brick or wood veneers or paneling, ecofriendly materials, and chalkboard paint (pro.com). For wallpapers, and vinyls,
large, or bold prints featuring natural, textured, or geometric designs are identified
as the most popular (pro.com). The surge in sustainability awareness and
environmentalism led by social media and service industries has caused many of
these trends to become popular, especially the use of recycled materials like floor
coverings, as well as natural motifs. Another factor that has led to this wide variety
of trends is the expansion of the interior design industry to DIY-ers, causing a giant
explosion of creative and economical wall treatments and finishes in the industry. It
is apparent, however, that the most important and consistent recent trend is for the
design to be both unique and personal to the client and the space.

growth and across-the-board raising of safety and sustainability standards, it is both
important, and challenging for them to constantly keep up with the current flooring
trends. This applies to both commercial and residential spaces. According to
Pro.com, a website created and run by professionals of service industries, the current
trends of today include: dark, white, or gray hardwood, wide planks, bamboo, ecofriendly options, such as reclaimed wood, large tiles, cork, durable vinyl, cut and loop
carpet, and concrete (pro.com). Vinyl flooring appeals to many designers as an
economical, durable, and more versatile option than real ceramic or stone tiles.
Concrete also appeals to consumers over stone for these reasons. The surge in
sustainability awareness and environmentalism led by social media and service
industries has caused many of these trends to become popular, especially the use of
recyclable materials. Also, as the world further blends the worlds of home and
business, residential spaces are incorporating more traditionally commercial
products, such as vinyl flooring and concrete. Another factor that has led to this wide
variety of trends is the expansion of the interior design industry to DIY-ers, causing a
giant explosion of creative and economical floorings in the industry. It is apparent,
however, that the most important and consistent recent trend is for the flooring to
create a design that is both unique and personal to the client and the space.

Current Architectural Surface Trends

With so many options available to interior designers, from both industry growth and
across-the-board raising of safety and sustainability standards, it is both important, and
challenging for them to constantly keep up with the current architectural surface trends. This
applies to both commercial and residential interiors. According to the KLC School of Design,
the current trends of 2016 include: textured materials, large-scale patterns, weathered wood
and stone, geometric patterns, metallic materials, living walls created from plants,
upholstered panels, monochrome patterns, light-incorporated materials, and eco-friendly
options, such as reclaimed wood, panels, tiles, and cork (klc.co.uk). Exposed brick is also
popular in urban environments. The increase of importance in selecting more durable
materials due to sustainability needs and also more open spaces has led to many of these
trends. This surge in sustainability awareness and environmentalism led by social media and
service industries has also caused many of these trends to become popular, especially the
use of recyclable materials. As the world further blends the worlds of home and business,
residential spaces are incorporating more traditionally commercial products, such as
paneling. Another factor that has led to this wide variety of trends is the expansion of the
interior design industry to DIY-ers, causing a giant explosion of creative and economical
surfaces in the industry. It is apparent, however, that the most important and consistent
recent trend is for the surfaces to help create a design that is both unique and personal to
the client and the space.

Current Millwork Trends

With so many options available to interior designers, from both industry growth and
across-the-board raising of safety and sustainability standards, it is important, and
challenging for them to constantly keep up with the current millwork trends. This applies to
both commercial and residential interiors. According to National Door and Trim, the current
trends in millwork include: solid wood doors, barn doors, and reclaimed woods, all in dark
hues (national-door.com). Other popular options include the use of plywood substitutes for
woods that are more easily renewable, and that can come in a large variety of finishes.
These types of products are also recyclable, economical, lighter, and more sustainable than
traditional millworks hardwoods (kireiusa.com). Simple and non-extravagant design is the
most common strategy for current millwork. The increase of importance in selecting more
durable materials due to sustainability needs, and also more rustic, historic design inspiration
has led to many of these trends. The surge in sustainability awareness and environmentalism
led by social media and service industries has also caused many of these trends to become
popular, especially the use of recyclable materials and wood substitutes. Another factor
that has led to this wide variety of trends is the expansion of the interior design industry to
DIY-ers, causing a giant explosion of creative and economical materials in the industry. It is
apparent, however, that the most important and consistent recent trend is for millwork to
help create a design that is both unique and personal to the client and the space.

Part II: Presentation

For Health Fitness Center

CONCEPT STATEMENT
The design for the Health Fitness Center will incorporate elements that will create a
space that promotes a sense of high energy and movement, as well as an
adventurous, outdoor feel. Light-value, saturated blues and greens, and light wood
wallcoverings will encompass the interior spaces, while soft yellow accents and
natural beige woods bring warmth to smaller architectural trims, details, and accents.
These trims, details, and accents along with the wallcoverings will be utilized
throughout the Center, increasing unity, and they will be designed to create vertical
lines, increasing both energy and movement, and a sense of a higher ceiling and
larger, open spaces. Both mind and body will be awakened in the young and older
members of the Center, as well as the employees through the uplifting, natureinspired spaces, psychologically-trustworthy blues and greens and overall
contemporary design. The design will achieve unity through the application of the
revitalizing color scheme throughout the Center and the use of materials that are
inspired by the environment and nature. The Center will truly be an open, natureinspired place where everyone can feel welcome and free to socialize.

JUSTIFICATION OF WALL FINISH SELECTIONS

The wall finishes selected for the Health Fitness Center will fulfill the concept
statements goals and achieve a high-energy, visually-pleasing, unified, sustainable design
that will meet the needs of the Center. The selected paints for the design were chosen in
slightly lighter shades than desired in order to combat the darkening effect when they are
applied. The paints selected for the interior walls and ceiling have eggshell finishes and the
chosen paint for the trims and accents has a semi-gloss one. Not only will the eggshell and
semi-gloss finishes provide increased stain resistance and easier maintenance, but their
contrast in sheen will cause the accents to stand out more, creating a more visually exciting
design. The contrasting sheens, along with the vinyl wallcovering and wooden veneer also
chosen for the Center will provide further textural interest and will all aid in creating a
nature-inspired, contemporary design.
All of the chosen products aid in creating a safe, ecofriendly, LEED-certifiable
design. The paints are made with a special formula that contains zero VOC and the vinyl
wallcovering and wooden veneer are both recyclable and contain low VOC and are
NSF/ANSI 342 certified. They will also both aid in mold and mildew resistance, an important
factor in a Health Fitness Center where steam and water contact are daily occurrences. All
of the selected products have a Class A fire rating as well. The chosen wall finishes and
products will all help create a safe, sustainable, low-maintenance, unified, and visually
stimulating design for the interior of the Health Fitness Center.

JUSTIFICATION OF FLOOR FINISH SELECTIONS

The finishes and materials chosen for the Health Fitness Center will complete the goals
of the concept statement and achieve a very safe, and sustainable design. The materials
chosen are all commercial grade and will be very suitable for the heavy traffic of the Center.
Acoustic protection and non-slip materials were also chosen to cater to the Centers wide
variety of clientele, including senior citizens. The vinyl treatments all mimic the appearance
of soft woods, corresponding with the nature-inspired, outdoors theme of the Center.
Additionally, the subtle-colored carpet selections will blend well with these vinyl tiles, keeping
visitors and employees eyes focused upward due to the bolder wall and ceiling finishes,
increasing the energy and lightness of the interior spaces of the Center.
The easily replaceable carpet tiles, along with the replaceable, durable Class III vinyl
treatments, will achieve a design that will be very sustainable, and will last for many years. All
of the materials are heavily-tested in terms of safety codes, antimicrobial and fire protection,
as well as recyclability and VOC content. They have passed these tests, are Cradle to Cradle
certified, ADA-Compliant, and they are specially designed to help achieve LEED certification
points. The materials chosen, particularly the carpet selections which are recyclable, are all
eco-friendly and correspond with the Centers goal of an extremely sustainable design. The
floor materials chosen will create long-lasting, visually-appealing floors for the Center that will
help achieve an overall safe, nature-inspired, and sustainable design.

JUSTIFICATION OF ARCHITECTURAL SURFACE SELECTIONS

The architectural surfaces selected for the Health Fitness Center will fulfill the concept
statements goals and achieve a high-energy, visually-pleasing, unified, sustainable design
that will meet the needs of the Center. The selected materials provide contrasting textures
from smooth to rough, increasing the visual excitement of the design. The selected materials
will also harmonize with the wall finish materials and paints chosen, in order to create a
vertical, exciting, cohesive design. The colors of the materials will fit well into the scheme
mentioned in the concept statement, and with the slected wall finish and flooring selections
chosen for the Center. Some of the architectural surfaces contain a nature-inspired
appeal, accentuating the outdoors-like design concept planned for the Center.
All of the chosen products aid in creating a safe, ecofriendly, LEED-certifiable
design. Some of the architectural surfaces will provide texture for the guiding hands of the
disabled, or senior citizens. The materials all have above Class C fire rating as well. All of the
surface materials are either recyclable, or are created from recycled content, or both.
They are also all extremely durable and sustainable. These characteristics will aid towards
LEED accreditation, increase the lifespan of the design, and make the maintenance easy
for the clients. Ease of cleaning is especially important around the Juice Bar, hence the
application of these surfaces in and around that area. The chosen materials will also both
aid in mold and mildew resistance, an important factor in a Health Fitness Center where
steam and water contact are daily occurrences. The selected products will all assist in
creating a safe, sustainable, low-maintenance, unified, and visually-stimulating design for
the interior of the Health Fitness Center.

JUSTIFICATION OF MILLWORK SELECTIONS

The millwork materials selected for the Health Fitness Center will fulfill the concept
statements goals and achieve a high-energy, visually-pleasing, unified, sustainable design
that will meet the needs of the Center. The selected materials will harmonize with the wall
finish materials and the paints chosen, in order to create a nature-inspired, cohesive design.
The wooden counters will be an especially strong accent of the designs outdoor-like style.
All of the chosen products aid in creating a safe, ecofriendly, LEED-certifiable
design. The materials will all be treated to have a Class A fire rating and they are all
recyclable, or are created from recycled content, or both. They are also all extremely
durable and sustainable. These characteristics will aid towards LEED accreditation, increase
the lifespan of the design, and make the maintenance easy for the clients. Ease of
cleaning is especially important around the Juice Bar, hence the application of the easy-toclean and repair countertop chosen. The chosen materials will also be resistant against
mold and mildew, an important factor in a Health Fitness Center where steam and water
contact are daily occurrences, especially in the Juice Bar. The selected products will all
assist in creating a safe, sustainable, low-maintenance, unified, and visually-stimulating
design for the interior of the Health Fitness Center.

LIGHT EFFECTS ON PAINT SAMPLE

Daylight

Fluorescent

LED

The photographs of the paint sample, Icy Lemonade, demonstrate the

strong effects of different lighting situations on colors. Both the daylight and
fluorescent examples are lighter than that of the LED, but the daylight
sample is slightly darker than the fluorescent. Also, the LED causes a
brownish tinge to the sample and makes it seem more saturated, while the
fluorescent makes it appear more yellow, and lighter. The LED sample is the
closest to the color sample directly form the Sherwin-Williams website.

LIGHT EFFECTS ON FLOOR FINISH SAMPLE

LED

The photographs of the vinyl tile, Quiet Cover-Cottonwood, demonstrate the strong
effects of different lighting situations on color. The daylight example is dramatically
lighter than that of the LED and the fluorescent. Also, the LED causes a warmer,
reddish tinge to the sample and makes it seem more saturated. The fluorescent
example makes the sample appear a simple brown color, most likely from the
addition of yellow light. The image extracted directly from the Shaw Floors website
lies in-between the daylight and LED samples in terms of saturation and color.

LIGHT EFFECTS ON ARCHITECTURAL SURFACE SAMPLE

The photographs of the wood panel system, Thistle-Maple, demonstrate the strong
effects of different lighting situations on color. The daylight example is dramatically
lighter than that of the LED and the fluorescent. It is also slightly cooler than the
other two. Also, the LED causes a much warmer, reddish tinge to the sample and
makes it seem more saturated. The fluorescent example makes the sample
appear slightly more brown, most likely from the addition of yellow light. The
image extracted directly from the Architectural Systems website lies in-between the
daylight and LED samples in terms of saturation and color.

LIGHT EFFECTS ON MILLWORK SAMPLE

The photographs of the countertop, Kirei Bamboo, demonstrate the strong effects
of different lighting situations on color. The LED sample is the brightest of the three.
Also, the LED causes a much warmer, reddish tinge to the sample and makes it
seem more saturated. The daylight sample shows the grain of the material the
most clearly. The fluorescent example makes the sample appear slightly more
brown, most likely from the addition of yellow light. The image extracted directly
from Kireis website lies in-between the daylight and LED samples in terms of
saturation and color.
