National Taipei University of Technology Application FAQ

This document has the objective to answer the common questions regarding the application process for
Taipei Tech. We, Josuet Leoro and Daniel Reyes (ESPE and Taipei Tech alumni), will try to convey as much
information as we can in this FAQ. If you have any further questions you can contact us through the email
account:

1. What is the Taipei Tech-ESPE cooperation about?

When we graduated from ESPE we felt at that moment that it was hard to find opportunities to study
abroad by being awarded a good scholarship. During our graduate studies at Taipei Tech we noticed the
interest from professors of having more international students in their laboratories and classes due to our
good performance. Hence, we came out with the conclusion that the real problem is a lack of connection
between the students that want to study abroad and the professors that need good students. This was
our motivation to start a cooperation between ESPE and Taipei Tech, to help good students to get these
opportunities. After our graduation from the master program, professor Che-Hua Yang Dean of the
College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering asked us to help to seek for good students from ESPE.
Taipei Tech is highly interested in receiving more ESPE students with excellent research skills and English
level.

2. Due to this Taipei Tech-ESPE cooperation, ESPE is involved in the selection process?
Not yet. ESPEs dean of mechatronics department, ESPEs dean of electronics department, and ESPEs
office of inter-institutional affairs are currently helping to promote the graduate programs from Taipei
Tech. They are not directly involved in the selection process. However, in the future, the selection process
may be handled by ESPE. Currently, we (Daniel and Josuet) are involved in this selection process.

3. Where do I find the information to apply for a master program in Taipei Tech?

electrical engineering is the International Master Program in Mechanical and Automation
Engineering. Under this program you can specialize in one of the following fields:

Vehicle Engineering.
Energy and Refrigerating Air-conditioning Engineering.
Mechatronic Engineering.
Manufacturing Technology.
Automation Technology.
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

5. When is the application deadline?

Here are the important dates that the applicant needs to consider. Applications from International
students are only considered for Fall Semester.
The application deadlines usually are:
Early January Online Application System opens.
Late April - Application Deadline (The application form and all supporting documents must reach the Office
of International Affairs(OIA) by this date.)

check the results. Letters of Acceptance (LOA) will be mailed out to successful applicants, and the

6. What are the available scholarships to study in Taipei Tech?

There are two options available, the first one funded by Taipei Tech and the second one funded
by Taiwan Government.
You can apply to the Taipei Tech scholarship during the application process. Currently this our
focus, since they award multiple international students every year.
The second option is the Taiwan Scholarship. This scholarship is limited to three students per
year from all the applicants in Ecuador. As it can be seen this option is more competitive since it
considers much more applicants. If you are interested in this option, you can find more
information about this scholarship in the web page of the commercial office of Taiwan in Ecuador:
http://www.roc-taiwan.org/EC/ct.asp?xItem=583072&ctNode=9515&mp=707
7. What scholarship does Taipei Tech offer for international students?
Currently, for admitted international masters students, it offers the TAIPEI TECH International Graduate
Student Scholarship which grants tuition waiver for one academic year. For the second year, it is necessary
to reapply, and it will be granted based on the student performance.

8. If the TAIPEI TECH scholarship only covers tuition waiver, how can I support my living
expenses?
This is where Josuet and Daniel come in. As explained in question 1, there are some Taipei Techs
professors interested on having international students (Specially ESPE alumni) in their laboratories.
In many countries, as a graduate student it is common to receive a monthly stipend from a
professor when you join his/her lab depending on the professors budget and projects funding.
What we are doing is contacting professors that are willing to provide this kind of financial support
to ESPEs prospective students.

9. One of the requirements of the application process is a bank statement or letter of financial
support. What is this for?
It is a document reviewed by the admission committee to ensure that when you come to Taiwan you are
able to cover your living expenses in Taiwan. This is because the admission process and the professors
financial support are not related. Therefore, the admission committee needs to check if the student has
any financial support to live in Taiwan. However, it is also important to remark that the tuition waiver is
not granted to all the applicants. It depends on the student profile and scholarship vacancies.

10. What are the requirements to be selected for this opportunity of financial support from
Professors?
It is more suitable for the application that the student is already graduated from University.
However, the students that are in the process of graduation can also apply by submitting a
certificate that the applicant will finish his/her bachelor degree before coming to Taiwan.
The parameters to be considered for the selection:

Good English ability. (In the mid-long term students will have to take mandarin classes)
Transcript scores. (The transcript copy is needed as proof)
Research areas of interest and experience in projects related with those areas.
Fulfill the application requirements of Taipei Tech.
TOEFL certificate with score over 80 points will be considered as a plus.
Students selection priorities and professors vacancy.
Overall interest and commitment with this process.

11. Is Chinese language a requirement?

No, all the courses under the international master program are taught in English. Therefore,
Chinese is not required to attend classes. However, it is recommended to study Chinese while
staying in Taiwan, to easy your daily interaction with local people. If you are able to study some
basic Chinese before coming to Taiwan it would help you to get around.
12. Does the scholarship cover the flight ticket?
No. The flight ticket and the first three months living expenses must be covered by the student.
An amount of approximately $3000 USD are needed to cover the flight ticket, initial expenses
and these three months of living in Taipei.
13. If I want to support my living expenses in Taiwan, in this case can I still apply to Taipei Tech
for a master program? How much do I need in average to survive in Taiwan?
Yes, you can apply to Taipei Tech directly through the application system. Just follow the steps shown in
the flowchart. The average cost per year living in the Taipei Tech dormitories (Shared room for four
people).

rent.
More information regarding living in Taipei can be found in Taipei Techs web page:

14. How much is the monthly payment received from the projects with the professors?
It depends on the professor and the project that you may work in. From our experience and the current
students in Taipei Tech, the monthly payment is usually $335USD, which in a year would sum $4020USD.
As it can be noticed, it does not completely cover all the living expenses in Taipei, especially for the second
year. However, some professors may assign more than one project or pay more depending on the
students performance. If this is not the case, the student must cover this additional expenses.

15. The project from which the payment is received is the thesis project?
Not necessarily, but it could be if the project is related with your research.

16. What is the duration of the master program in Taipei Tech?

Normally it takes two years to complete all the requirements for the master degree. However,
to finish all the required credits from courses, a minimum of three semesters is needed. The
thesis can be completed during these three semesters. It all depends on the student.
17. What is the process to get the transcript in English from ESPE?
The transcript required for the application must be translated, legalized and verified from
different institutions before you can use it for the application. The process is as follows:
1. Get an official transcript from Admisin y Registro office (In average takes two or
three days).

2. Go to the ESPE language institute Inca, and contact the official translator Patricio
Serrano. The transcript must be translated by him, because for the future steps no other
translation is accepted (In average takes one week).
3. The original and translated transcripts needs to apply for a legalization step at ESPE. This
legalization is done by the general secretary Juan Carlos Orbe. He will sign all the
documents, making them a legal copy that you can use outside of ESPE. (In average
takes 4 days).
4. The documents then must be verified by SENESCYT (In average takes one day).
Address: Whymper E7-37 y Alpallana
5. The next step is to apply for a legalization at the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y
Movilidad Humana. (In average it takes 20-30 minutes)
Address: Av. 10 de Agosto 1855 y Carrin, Edificio Sols, planta baja.

6. The final step is to take the documents to the Commercial Office of Taiwan in Ecuador
for a final legalization step. (In average it takes 3 days)
Address: Piso 2, Edificio TITANIUM II, Calle Catalina Aldaz y Avda. Portugal

18. What about the process for the graduation diploma?

For the graduation diploma, the steps 3-6 must be followed. The translation is not necessary
because the graduation diploma has already an English version. A full color copy of the diploma
is needed for this process. The photocopy must be made at ESPEs library. They have a special
paper sheet for documents legalization.
