INTRODUCTION:This article is about the electronic protocol named

after Harald "Bluetooth" Gormson. For the person, see
Harald
I
of
Denmark.Bluetooth
is
an
industrial
specification for wireless personal area networks
(PANS).Bluetooth is a wireless protocol that is used to
communicate from one device to another in a small area
usually less than 30 feet. It is wireless low-cost radio
solution they enables small devices such as PDAs cell, cell
phones , laptops, palmtops go communicate between each
other and with the Internet. The technology will also be
extended to desktop so that priers or scanners can
communicate with desktop so that priers or scanners
without wires thereby enhancing ease of use and reducing
wiring problem.

Origin of Bluetooth:The Bluetooth specification was developed in 1994

In 1989 the specifications were formalized by the
Bluetooth special Interest group (SIG). It was established
by Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, IBM, Intel and Nokia later
joined by many other companies.
Bluetooth was
named after a late tenth century king,
Harald Bluetooth,
King of Denmark and Norway. He is known for his
unification of previously warring tribes from Denmark
(including now Swedish Scania, where the Bluetooth
technology was invented), and Norway.

WHAT IS BLUETOOTH ?
Bluetooth is a technology that allows devices to
communicate with each other without cables or wires. It
is electronics standard, which means that manufactures
that want to include this feature have to incorporate
specific requirements into their electronics devices. These
specifications ensure that the devices can recognize and
interact

with

other

devices

that

use

the

Bluetooth

technology.
Many popular manufactures are making devices
that use Bluetooth technology.

These devices include

mobile phones, computers and personal digital assistants

(PDAs).

The Bluetooth technology relies on short-range

radio frequency and any device that incorporates the

8

NIIT

technology can communicate as long as it is within the

required distance. The technology is often used to allow
two different types of devices to communicate with each
other.

Bluetooth

The developers of this wireless technology first

used the name "Bluetooth" as a code name, but as time
passed, the name stuck.

The word "Bluetooth" is taken from the

10th century Danish
King Harald Bluetooth .King Bluetooth had been influential
in uniting Scandinavian Europe during an era when the
region was torn apart by wars and feuding clans.
The founders of the Bluetooth SIG felt the name was
fitting
because:
1)

2) Bluetooth technology is able to unite differing

industries such as the cell phone, computing, and
automotive markets. Bluetooth wireless technology
simplifies and combines multiple forms of wireless
communication into a single, secure, low-power, low-cost,
globally available radio frequency.

Over the years

Since the development of Bluetooth in 1994

by Swedish telecommunications firm Ericsson, there have
been more than 1800 companies worldwide who have
signed as members of the Bluetooth Special Interest
Group (SIG) in order to build products to the wireless
specification, as well as to promote the new technology in
the marketplace
When Bluetooth was officially introduced in
1998, its intended basic purpose was to be a wire
replacement technology in order to rapidly transfer voice
and data.
There were many doubters who believed
Bluetooth would be a distant memory in just a couple of
years. However, multiple years have passed and Bluetooth
continues to make strides and advancements every day.
A lot has changed since the first Bluetooth
Core Specification Version was introduced in 1998. Over
the past couple years Bluetooth technology has really
begun to take giant leaps forward.
Toshiba being the founding group and in
December of 1999, companies like Microsoft, 3 Com,
Motorola and Lucent joined the SIG to become the
Promoter Group. The number of SIG members increased
very rapidly and currently numbers more than 2000
companies.

In 2003, the Bluetooth SIG began a major

overhaul of the Bluetooth specification with the
announcement of version 2.1. Then, in 2004, Bluetooth
version 2.0 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) was introduced.
Devices using version 2.0 + EDR began to hit the market
in late 2005.

The Bluetooth SIG

The name Bluetooth and its logo are
trademarked by the privately held trade association
named the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).
Founded in September 1998, the Bluetooth
SIG is a unification of leaders in the telecommunications,
computing, network, industrial automation, and
automotive industries. Today, the Bluetooth SIG is
responsible for encouraging and supporting research and
development in Bluetooth technology.
The Bluetooth SIG includes promoter member
companies Microsoft, Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Agree,
Motorola, Nokia, and Toshiba, plus thousands of Associate
and Adopter member companies .

Where did the Logo come from?

A Scandinavian firm originally designed the
logo at the time the SIG was formally introduced to the
public. Keeping to the same origin as the Bluetooth name,
the logo unites the Runic alphabetic characters "H", which
looks similar to an asterisk, and a "B", which are the
11

NIIT

initials for Harald Bluetooth. If you look close enough you

can see both embodied in the logo.

Evolution of Bluetooth specification

Since the introduction of Bluetooth and the
formation of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) by
five companies in 1998, Bluetooth technology has seen
astounding growth. In 2005, the SIG welcomed its 5,000th
member company, and the number of products using this
wireless protocol continues to grow.
This article offers a brief update on Bluetooth
terminology and developments, with special emphasis on
those impacting hearing care. It will also describe the
newest members of the growing collection of Bluetooth
products from Starkey Labs and how they lead toward
market convergence.

More about the origin

Bluetooth" was the code-name given by
engineers from Ericsson to honor a tenth-century Viking
king, Harald Bluetooth, who reigned from 940 to 985. He
was credited for unifying Denmark, bringing order to the
country. In all honesty, Harald's name was actually
Bltand, but was roughly translated in English as
"Bluetooth." But don't take this to mean the color of his
teeth were blue. Bltand actually referred to the color of
Harald's hair, which was a very dark color that was not
typical of Vikings.

CONCLUSION

Bluetooth is aimed at the short range radio link

market. Its scheme does not
Fit in the senario of broad range network like WAN or
Internet.
However,
Wapforum's solution is designed intendly to be as the
internet standards. So
They have different playground. Actually, one can
integrate them together,
Use Bluetooth as a bearer for transporting data between
the WAP clients and
their
adjacent WAP Server.
However, concerned with the security feature, WAP
get a stronger and more
flexible
one. It use public key scheme to excange the
secret key which is
used in symmetric-key algorithm to encrypt the user data.
So when gaining
security
strength, at the same time it also obtain a
comparative good
performance . But the Bluetooth depends its security on
the PIN code which
is used to generate the initialization key. Considering it
aimed to be used
in a short range, such security may be enough, though
obviously weaker than.mhthat it would have to
