BWFF2033 Financial Management Group (A)

Project Paper Guidelines
Registering Project Group
The project should be carried out by groups of five students. Students should form their
own project groups and then register them with the lecturer. The lecturer will then
assign each project group a unique number. This project group number must be stated
in the project report and in all communications related to the project.

Registering Companies
Each member of a project group must choose at least one company listed in Bursa
Malaysia (BM) from the industrial products sector only.
http://www.bursamalaysia.com/market/securities/equities/prices# ,

Surf the BM website:

and select the Main Market, then

select the trading & services sector. Each group member (after conferring with other
members) must select at least one company in that sector, and should note each
companys stock code and stock name.
Next, each member must check to ensure that each chosen companys annual reports for
five years, from 2010 2014, are accessible. The company should be dropped (and
replaced) if the annual reports are not available for all the five years. This may be
checked on the companys webpage that can be accessed by clicking on the companys
stock name.
Each member must then send the particulars of at least one company (that have the
required data) to her/his leader, who would collate the particulars of the group and send
them by e-mail to the lecturer for approval as soon as possible. In the e-mail, the leader
must state the following: (1) project group number, (2) members matric number, (3)
members name, and the list of the selected companies (4) stock codes, and (5) stock
names. Type or insert these pieces of information directly into e-mail, do NOT send
them in attachments. The lecturer will register one company for each member of a
project group if any of the companies has not been registered already to other members
of the same or other groups, and will inform the leader by e-mail.

Project Purpose
In general, the aim of the project is to assess the selected five (or four) companies
financial positions and performances for the years of 2010 to 2014. These are assessed
mainly from using the ratio analysis described in Chapter 3 of the textbook.
Assessing Company Financial Position and Performance
Each member must do the analyses for her/his chosen company by using the figures
obtained from the companys financial statements to compute all the possible ratios. All
members must then compare their companies against one another, to assess the relative
positions and performances of these companies.
Project report
The project report should be in English, typed using the Times New Roman font, size
12pt., and should be double-spaced with (no less than) 2cm margins except the right
margin, which should be (at least) 5cm (to allow the lecturer to write assessment
comments in that margin). The report should not exceed 15 pages. This does not,
however, include the references or appendices. There is no limit to the number of pages
that can be included in the appendices. All pages must be numbered. The report must
be in a single file (document), preferably, in MS Word, or in PDF format only, and
submitted via e-mail attachment. The title page of the report must be like that shown in
the last page of this document.
The report should have an introduction, the first section, which should briefly state the
purpose of the report and introduce the companies that have been chosen in the study,
including details of listing dates, nature and type of business, and other relevant facts.
Information and data for these can be gleaned from the companies websites and annual
reports, newspaper articles about the companies, and other relevant sources.

The

introduction should compare the similarities and differences among the companies, and
should not exceed three pages.
In the second section, each of the companies financial position and performance over
the five years must be analysed. This section should not exceed 10 pages - two pages
for each company.

Updated:

The third section, conclusion, should then compare and discuss the relative financial
positions and performances among the companies. This section should not exceed two
pages.
Next, the reference section must carry references that must have been cited in the report.
References must adhere to the APA format of citations and referencing.
Finally, the report should include appendices. In the appendices, include all the relevant
pages from companies annual reports. Relevant material from newspaper articles and
sources may be included as well.
The deadline to submit the report is 31 May 2016.
