In sewage treatment plants, undesired components are removed
from the wastewater by means of mechanical, biological and
chemical procedures. After the larger, undissolved impurities have
been mechanically removed with the rake and by means of
sedimentation in the sand trap and in the primary settling tank, the
biological treatment follows. Bacteria and other micro-organisms are
used to mineralize biodegradable organic wastewater components
as far as possible. Organically bound nitrogen is removed in
denitrification tanks.
In the course of expanding a municipal sewage treatment plant, flow
measurements were required at six new denitrification tanks.

Non-invasive ultrasonic flow measurement is a very good and
economic alternative to the magnetic-inductive flowmeters
customarily used in the water and wastewater industry. Because the
clamp-on ultrasonic transducers are simply installed on the outer
surface of the pipe, large diameters do not imply any significant
additional costs. Furthermore installation and commissioning are
very easy, requiring no pipework or large construction work.
The measuring points are at the inlets of the denitrification tanks
(with recycled sludge) and at the recirculation pipes. The high
transmission power of the FLUXUS? ADM ensures reliable and
failure safe measurements even in the case of large diameters,
deposits and/or contamination of the wastewater with solid sludge
particles. Using dual-channel transmitters makes it possible to set
up each measuring point for cross-measurements with two pairs of
transducers.
