details. They also give a free lunch.

Rotarians from their club. Our Moraga
Clunkers website will be up and running
and our Clunkers marketing cards will
be printed and ready to hand out.
The May Board Meeting will be held at
Trinity Church next Tuesday evening,
May 17th beginning at 5PM. All are
welcome to attend and contribute to the
running of our club.
On Saturday, June 18th the District
Bocce Ball Tournament is scheduled
at the Martinez Bocce Courts. Captain
Angelo reports we have 4 teams this
year and he will arrange a practice
session a few weeks prior to the
tournament.

~SPEAKER OF THE DAY~

Our speaker today was Agnes Moore, an
original Rosie the Riveter. Agnes was
introduced by Debbie Roessler. Debbie
asked all veterans in attendance to stand
and be counted.

Agnes Moore and Raj at the Podium

Agnes began her presentation with a

movie from ABCs Good Morning America
detailing a visit by 5 Rosie the Riveters
to the White House. The movie illustrated
the role played by women in building war
materials in WW II. The riveters were
greeted by both Vice President Biden and
President Obama.
Agnes described how the world was for
women in the early forties. She described
a work environment that included
mandatory unions and blatant sexism and
racism. A tough world to learn to do a
vital job.
Agnes was a welder. She explained that
very little actual riveting was performed
on the victory ships that she worked on.
Agnes described the welders job

working alone, sometimes in tight

quarters and on ladders.
Agnes worked in the shipyards from
January of 1942 through September of
1945. The shipyards built 747 ship over
a four-year period.

Thank You
Rotary

Letters

From Odyssey of the Mind

Agnes ended her presentation describing

the trip she and her colleagues took to
Washington DC. The trip included not
only the event at the White House but
many tours and meetings with Members
of Congress. George Miller asked Agnes
what she personally wanted from
Congress. She replied that they needed
to get some things done for a change!
The meeting ended with the raffle being
won by Louise Schopke. The grand
prize eluded Louise and she went home
with a $10 prize.
