Thousands math practice (Part 1)

Q1.If selling price is doubled, the profit triples. Find the profit percent. slv in dtls.
Solution: CP=100
Profit=x%
SP=100+x
A.T.Q
2(100+x) - 100=3x
3x-2x=200-100
x=100
i.e., 100%
Q2. A man sold an article for tk. 75 and loss something. Had he sold it for tk. 96, has gain would have
been double the former loss. The cost price of the articale is?
Solution:
Let cost price tk. X.
After selling tk 75, loss=tk(X-75)
similarly selling tk 96, profit=((96-X)
According to the Question
96-x=2(x-75)
or,
x=82
Q3.
At what profit percent must an article be sold so that by selling at half price,there may be a loss of 30%?
Solution:
Let, cost=100
At 30% loss selling price is 100-30=70
Double of 70 is 2*70=140
Profit when selling price is 140 is 140-100=40
So profit %=(40/100)*100=40%
Q4:
X sell an item to y at a profit of 28% and Y sells th esame item to Z at a loss of 25% on his cost. If Y had
sold the item to Z at TK 2. less than what it cost to y, what is the cost of the item to X in Tk?
Solution:
sells price of x=128,
so purchase price of y= 128.

Now, 25% loss of y, so sells price of y =(75*128)/100=96,

Now sells price more from x=128-96=32. So,
sells 32 more cost 100.
" " 1 " 100/32 when
" " 2 " " " " 100*2/32=6.25 ans
Q5:
A man gains 10% by selling an article for a certain price. if he sells it at double the price , the profit made
is
Solution:
Let,CP=100
So, s.P=110
When S.P =220
Profit=(220-100)=120
Profit %= (120/100)*100=120%
Q6:
In how many ways can the letters of the word 'LEADER' be arranged?
Solution:
The word 'LEADER' contains 6 letters, namely 1L, 2E, 1A, 1D and 1R.
Required number of ways = 6!/(1!)(2!)(1!)(1!)(1!) = 360.
6!/2!= 360
Q7:
A student multiplied a number by 3/5 instead of 5/3.What is the percentage of error in the
calculation???/
Solution:
Let the number is 15.
Now 15*3/5=9
15*5/3=25

Error in 25=16
error in 100=1600/25=64%
Q8:
a person travel a distance of 25 km at as speed of 75 km/h and then comes back at twice the speed. how
mAny minutes did he take in total???
Solution:
25/75=1/3*60=20mnts
25/75*2=1/6*60=10 mnts
so 20+10=30 Mnts
Q9:
If a person walks at 14 km/hr
instead of 10 km/hr, he would have
walked 20 km more. The actual
distance travelled by him is:
Solution:
d/10=(d+20)/14
d=50
Q10:
A person travels from X to Y at a speed of 40 km/h and returns by increasing his speed by 50%.What is
his average speed for both the trips?
Solution:
At 50% increase, new speed = 40 + 4050% =60
2

Avg speed= + =(2*40*60) /(40+60) =48 km/hr

Q11:
A starts business with tk. 3500 and after 5months B joins with A as his partner. After a year, the profit is
divided in the ratio 2:3. what is B's contribution in the capital?
Solution:
Let, contribution of B=x
atq,
A:B

(3500*12): (x*7)=2:3
42000/7x=2/3
x=9000
Q12:
Three partners A,B and C start a business . Twice the investment of A is equal to thrice the capital of B is
4 times the capital of C. Find the share of each out of a profit of taka 297000.
Solution:
let C=x
B=4x
A=(4x*3)/2=6x
so total x+4x+6x=11x or 11 so
A=(297000*6)/11=162000
B= (297000*4)/11= 108,000
C= (297000)/11 = 27000 taka
Q13:
in a flight of 600 km an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather .its average speed for the trip was
reduced by 200 km/ hour and the time of flight increased by 30 minutes. find the duration of the flight.?
Solution:
30 minutes = 1/2 hours
let usual speed = x per hour
so usual time needed to cover 600km is 600/x hours
reduced speed = (x-200) per hour
so time needed to cover 600km using reduced speed = 600/(x-200)
Now,
600/(x-200) - 600/x = 1/2
or, x-600x+400x-240000 =0
(x-600)(x+400)=0
so x = 600
duration of the flight = 600/(x-200)= 600/400 =1.5 or 90minutes (Ans)

Duration of the flight is 1.5 hours

Scheduled time of the flight is 1 hour.

Another way
Let the duration of the flight is x hr
Atq,
600/x-600/(x+1/2)=200
600/x-1200/(2x+1)=200
600(1/x-2/(2x+1))=200
3(1/x-2/(2x+1))=1
(2x+1-2x)/x(2x+1)=1/3
1/x(2x+1)=1/3
2x^2+x-3=0
2x^2-2x+3x-3=0
(2x+3)(x-1)=0
Therefore, x=1 (x=-(3/2) is not acceptable as time can't be negative)
Duration of the flight is 1+0.5=1.5 hours
Scheduled time of the flight is 1 hour.
Q14. The numbers M and N are such that the sum of 5% of M and 4% of N is tow third of the sum of 6%
of M and 8% of N. What is the ratio of M and N?
Solution: 5M/100 + 4N/100=2/3(6M/100+8N/100)
=>5M+4N=(12M+16N)/3
=>15M+12N=12M+16N
=>15M-12M=16N-12N
=>M/N=4/3
=>M:N=4:3ANS
Q15: A box contains 2 white balls,3 black balls and 4 red balls. In how many ways can 3 balls be drawn
from the box, if at least one black ball is to be included in the draw?
Solution: We may have (1 black and 2 non-black) or (2 black and 1 non-black) or (3 black).
Required number of ways = (3C1 x 6C2) + (3C2 x 6C1) + (3C3)
=45+18+1
=64 ANS
