The subject of the studies is to build a prevention program from a rural Hawaiian

community based to the youth and community programmes. The core and based of this
studies is using photovoice technique to the children 12 to 18 years old. Every photos have
been divided into 7 themes and it is formulate by SHOWED ( See, happening, our, why,
empower and do )
I am very agree with this studies because this are very interesting and important to
help the researcher to build dynamics programs of prevention especially in rural areas. At
least not in Hawaii, but it should be tested to rural of Peninsular Malaysia and also in Sabah
and Sarawak. It also makes the kids to have greater thinking skills and also boost their great
confident in daily life without effects their own cultural.
The themes in the studies are dividing by 8 themes. The first theme is about values,
beliefs, practises and ways. The second themes consists the supportive of culture, talk to the
older resembles, the third theme while the strengths and resources in our community are in
the fourth themes. The fifth theme includes the topics of family resolve conflict while Native
Hawaiian model of drug is in the sixth theme. Theme seventh consists of thinking on what
does spiritual power can help the youth to prevent a substance of drug abuse.
The studies have a group of 10 participants from the ages of 12 to 18 years old. 6 of
them are girls and 4 are boys. The group samples had their own cameras to capture pictures
based on the themes which were given. Facilitators will guide the samples to abide the rules
and ethics in capturing pictures while running the program.
After they completed their work, they discussed with facilitator about their picture
and explaining the meaning of the picture. For my opinion, this a very good activities to make
sure the activity they have done have an objectives to archive. All the discussion will be
record and the participant nor the facilitator can review their information. The example of the
pictures taken are Pono, Hihia, Kupuna, Language and Kalo, Ukelele, Kukui leaves, Banana
and Mana
In my opinion, the subject or sampling should be more than 10 participants or more
than a one groups. The studies also can be divide by two categorize of gender for example for
male and female. This purpose are to determine a difference of perspective picture and will
be gain more challengers and creativity to build prevention programs in rural areas in gender
categorize.
This article doesnt have a systematically data to measure the improvement of the
study. In my opinion, the research should make a descriptive questions in likert scale to find
the percentage of improvement of the studies. The questionnaire should be done in the
beginning and in the end of the sessions such as pre and post test.
The conclusion of this review, the topic represented by the author is an good ideas
were can be adapt in Malaysia to make a module of prevention in substance abuse. The
specialist must be exploring the cultural in community before implementing the module. The
activities in this research very unique because the participants took a picture themselves

about similar themes and elaborate their finding in group discussion. But, the limitations of
the research should be the cost of the programs such as the need of camera and the picture
printer.
The review also can help the researcher to more understandings about cultural,
religion and tradition of village and community.
