GREETINGS!
"Rejoice in the Lord always; and again

I say rejoice." Philippians 4:4.

Dearly beloved in Christ,
and all that you are doing, and have done
He has an

swered your prayers and my health is

slowly beginning to improve. It has taken
the doctors quite sometime to finally agree
that I almost had a nervous break-down,

which was caused by a circulatory collapse

"low blood pressure. The doctors felt a

large part of the problem was due to being
on the road too much. Lord willing, I will
be taking over my ministerial duties in Jan
uary. The whole situation has taught me
the love of God, or given me a better

understanding of His love. His people, and

the abundant grace which He bestows upon
each one of us if we will but let Him. I
want to thank one and all for the beautiful

get-well cards.

Debbie is learning to play the piano. She

hopes to play several songs for us at Christ
mas time ~ Christmas carols, of course!

Thank you for your prayers, concern

on behalf of His work here.

Debbie just had her 12th birthday, on

December 8. She and Janice wish to pass
along their greetings and thanks to all.

She has played for one German church

service so far, and will. Lord willing, be
playing for many more in the near future.
The past year has gone by quickly for us,

and we praise the Lord, and thank Him for

each step forward. We are looking forward
to a grand and blessed Christmas and we
want to thank you for making this possible.
We would like to take this opportunity to
wish you the best Christmas and New Year
you have ever had. We pray that the Holi
day Season will bring many rewards, spirit
ually, and opportunities for serving Christ
in your own special way.
Your co-laborers in Christ,
Alva, Janice and Debbie Phillips

situations which appear to be bad, and can

turn them into blessings. It is just as it says
in Romans 8:28, "All things work together
for good to them that love God, to those
that are called according to His purpose." I
say this, because it was during my illness,
that the American congregation in Gechingen, W. Germany, where we live, caught a

vision. The Lord caused them to realize for

The PhjUips family

the first time, that they could spread His

Word, even when the minister wasn't up to
helping them.
They began preaching,
teaching and witnessing on their own and
God is truly blessing their efforts. They
now have their own meeting place and are
engaged in a calling-witnessing program.
They also have a minister for the time

being. Brother Art Thomas is filling the

pulpit at the present time. It thrills us that

their home, hearts and means, to see that

Art has accepted the position to minister to

them a special blessing for all the sacrifices

which they made on His behalf. We met in

the group. He is from Tubingen, W. Ger

many. The group really likes him; he has
had military experience and therefore,
seems to know the inroads to reaching

them and their needs. God has big plans

for this congregation. Will you join us in
prayer for them and their spiritual growth?

His Word was proclaimed. May God ^ve

their home for over a year. This group is
now meeting in Chaplin Selkey's home. It
thrills us to see the number grow with each

meeting, presently running around 15-20

young adults. The spiritual growth is also

very inspiring. Each time we journey down

to Augsburg to have services with them, it
is a red shot in the spiritual arm for us. We
often come away ~ having received the
richest blessings, we are sure. The journey
there and back takes about 5 hours and is

approximately 200 miles in distance. Per

haps you ask, "Why? Why go there?" Be

cause these people love the Lord and it

won't be long before a church can be
grounded there for Christ. Presently, they

have adopted me as their "Missionary Min

ister". They will be needing a full time
minister soon, and it looks like the Lord is
already working on this need. We will try

|to keep you filled in on their progress. All

Echterdingen group

;of these services are conducted in English.

A part of the group which meets in Boe-

blingen, W. Germany, comes from the

Stuttgart Air Field, Stuttgart, W. Germany.

They have a prayer m^^etiug-Bible study

each Monday evening. Recently, the possi
bility presented itself to start a Coffee
House Ministry on the Base. The group,

though rather small in number, have been

meeting together for over a year. They
have a real love for the Lord. They are

looking forward to taking an active part in

the Coffee House Ministry. Your prayers

are requested on their behalf, that they will

continue to grow in the love of the Lord,

and continue to reach out to the lost souls

around them there.

There is no regular

chaplain on the Base there. This also makes

things difficult for the fellows, spiritually.

Many of them are harrassed quite unjustly

by their officers - for their spiritual stand.
And only our faithful prayers backing them
up, will carry them through.
Our Lord is wonderful.

He works in

mysterious ways, His wonders to perform.

Our first acquaintace with this group came
about through the Richard Deightons and
Bill McGinnises. The McGinnises opened

Because of the enthusiasm among the
Americans and their spiritual progress, the
German Christians are starting to see what
they can do, too. They now want to get

that his desires to be immersed into Christ

will become a reality. He wants to do all to

the Lord's honor and glory. Also, PLEASE

the daily prayer time ~ that they too will

soon go all the way with Christ. It may be

work done. This past fall, the short Evan

gelistic Meeting which Brother Hopfel from

Munich, held for the Germans, seems to

have been a real "Eye Opener" for them.
Here again, the Lord used my illness to

challenge the Germans to do the inviting,

and the the bringing in of outsiders. Some

of the people were afraid we were leaving

Germany, and asked us to reconsider. If
we would stay on, they would help us get
an active work going. They are striving at

the present time to do just that. The Lord

is answering our prayers and yours. It is

thrilling to hear that spiritual progress is

being made among our summer camper^.

Two weeks ago, our hearts were filled to
overflowing, as we received word that one

of the young girls who attended camp last

summer, desired to be baptized. However,

my joy was short lived as I attended the
"So-called baptismal service". The sermon,
which was presented, came strictly from

the Scriptures, but neither baptism nor the

celebration, which followed, came from

God's Word.
Despite this, the Lord
brought me from the valley, back to the
mountain top, as a young man, who at
tended the services, came to me and said,

"Mr. Phillips, this isn't Scriptural, is it? I

believe that one should be baptized by im

mersion for the forgiveness of sins. It is
also my conviction that these celebrations
are from the world and sinful. Mr. Phillips,

Not only has the Lord blessed us in the
ways already mention, but He has also
opened up new doors of service. Brother
Jay Enck, who is a part of the Echterdingen-Stuttgart Air Field Group, has been
and is a great help to us in many ways. He
attended the Christian Retreat in Lugano

this past summer with us. He has been a

real boost to both my wife and I. He has
been helping in a new outreach in the area

of printing. Through the Lord's help, and

yours, we now have a good table model, A.

B. Dick press, and the basic equipment
needed to run the press.
We have had the joy of printing a tract
for Rick Deighton (1,000 copies, 12 pages
long), materials for the Mid-Winter Rally,
invitations to the English services, and ad-

vertisment or publicity for the missionaries.

as well as song books. Jay seems to be the

one to pick up the "mess" and work things
out. After "many"failures made by Janice
on the Mid-Winter Rally bulletin, Jay came
to our rescue, and did a beautiful job of
printing them. He is an "all-around" handiman. We can always use a handi-man. He
leads the Bible study group at Echterdingen

helps pick up people for services, who have

no transpo^tion available each Lord's

Day. As we said before, we need his help
and appreciate it beyond words. By the
way, the press does a beautiful job,and we
hope to able to supply each of the mission
aries, printing needs, as they arise. Isn't

UNNOTICED HEROES IN GOD'S WORK

How often we hear of this or that great

missionary and the work which he is doing;

and this is great. However, I would like to
take this opportunity to talk to you about
some of the unnoticed heroes. These are

the ones who stay in the background, carry

the burdens and do many tedious and unre
warding tasks. It may be such things as
sorting materials, cleaning a printing press,
changing diapers or washing clothes. After
this person must spend hours alone, or at
times, be ready to depart at a moment's
notice. Naturally, she is to do all of this in
a loving and ^ood-natured-way. She is a
person who is expected to run her house
hold with great effeciency; and a person in
whom her husband can place trust, to take

care of things, while he witnesses to those

in the countey where they are living. After
they have spent several years on the field,
and finally do arrive back in the States, the
churches go all out to welcome him back
and to praise and encourage him, for a job
well done. Dearly beloved - haven't we
forgotten that there are two people in
volved in this great task of evangelism? We
often say that behind every great man there
is a woman. I think it is time we began to

practice what we preach. When you have a

moment, take the time and drop a line to
some missionary's wife or family and tell_
the wife how much you appreciate what
she is doing on Christ's behalf. God will re
ward you for doing so.

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Our Lord has given us another reason to rejoice-recently the Lord

led Martin Binkele to be baptized into Christ and Christ added him unto

His kingdom. He is the only one of his family who has been immersed into
Christ. Martin has two brothers who have children. It was on his brother's

farm that we had Christian Service Camp for about six years. Please re
member the Binkele family inyour prayers. Sister Huber has been in the

hospital for testing and is now home recuperating. Sister Julie Eberle
too has been in the hospital with a slight heart attack. She is now home
resting and slowly recovering. Please pray that the Lord's will be done
in the life of each sister.

A door of personal evangelism has opened for us to teach Erika Feiler

the plan of salvation. She has taken an active part in the youth work and
in the Children's Bible Hour over the past four years. Remember Erika and

her family in your prayers. We thank all of you for your prayers on behalf
of our family and of the Lord's work here. We are happy to say we are in
good health, God has made it possible for the youth groups to begin
again. The Lord is using the doctor to help me get back on a full schedule
of ministerial duties.

We don't like to cry wolf, but we do need workers. Unless the Lord

sends workers before the Summer, we will not be able to have campfor
the first time in seven years. This shortage is due to the fact that most
of the Missionaries who usually help us will be on furlough. We have
written to several bible college students but have not had any positive
replies. If no workers are available by camp time we will be able to take
the youth only for a three day trip. Please let us know of anyone who
might be interested, and please add this need to your prayer list.
We have been thrilled by the growth of the Lord's work among the

military with whom we work near Stuttgart and in Augsburg, Germany. There
are some in each group who will step out on Christ's behalf and help bear
the load. The group in Augsburg is growing and now numbers 15-20. They are
being trained and are training themselves to minister to their fellow

servicemen. They need your prayers as they face many difficulties in their
stand for Christ.

God heard and answered our prayers concerning the need for a press.
He provided us with a fine printer, Jay Enck. Jay's time in the service is

getting short and we are praying the Lord will see fit to keep this need

filled. Due to printing expenses, the Mission is in dio^e^^d-of,$30Q. more

.a month of pledged support. It is in the red now due tJ^Sele-'added'exp
Youf prayers and consideration concerning these matters will be greatlv
appreciated.

May His eternal love be showered upon you as you serve Him each day.

CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER

1976

Dear Ones in Christ,

At this time of year the world seems to turn toward Christ for
a few days. But we Christians taice Him with us daily. I know that I
would never want to face a single day without Him. Oh, how very much
do the lost souls of this world miss out simpdy because they refuse to

accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. Things are not setting well in
the world scene here in Germany because the German people have no room
for Christ. Daily I shake my head and ask the Lord hew much longer this
sin sick world can go on without killing itself. My prayer is that God

will stir up within His children such a yearning for these lost souls
around each one of us that we will do everything we can to show them to
Christ. The world needs Christ more now than ever before. Let us show

them Christ in His fullness and glory especially during this season
when they do make a small effort to turn in His direction. Let us live
Christ before the world and shower it with His love so that no one can

say to us "why didn't you show me Christ?" We wish each of you a Christ
centered New Year and that each day will be one spent in God's love.
It looks as though the family doctor was right-Alva has low blood
pressure, weak nerves and a busy schedule. This implies a rough time for
him and a slow return te recovery. Alva finds it hard to relax but he is

trying. Debbie's piano lessons are coming along fine-as long as her home
work doesn't take up all her practice time. She enjoys playing Baci^,
Schumann and Mozart. She really enjoys school and her music. Debbie is
so German now she seems to enjoy only German food. We are very proud of
our daughter and her love for her Lord.
Our sincere thanks to all of you wno made the purchase of the

press possible. It has been installed and works fine \inder the direction
of Jay Enck. Janice is still learning to operate the press and soon will
have it mastered. The Lord provided us with plenty of printing to do.
This is why the press was purchased and why we stressed the urgent need.
Your prayers and support in this area are needed. May God's work go
forth to the people through the printing done on the press. To win the
world to Christ should be our only goal. Put your whole self into the
effort and it will be wonderful to see what the Lord can and will do

in and through you. He is so great, let us not limit Him to our meager
efforts.

Thank you for your faithful support during the past year. You
have made His work here possible. Praise His Holy Name!
Yours and His,

WEST GERMANY

Alva Allen Phillips was born on January4, 1939 in Brownville, Indiana.

His parents, Benjamin Harrison and Emma Lock Phillips died of cancer in
1943,

Being the youngest in the family of 10 children, Alva was raised

by Bennie and Henry Phillips, two of his older brothers.

He graduated

from Brownville, Ind. High School and went on to Johnson Bible College
for four (4) years and graduated fromthere in 1961.

By this time he

had decided to go into missionary work and went on to Eastern Christian

College in Bel Aire, Md, for a year's study in German and Greek.

During

this time, while he studied he ministered to a small congregation, the

Christian Church in Freindsville, Md, for 9 months.

Following his schooling at Eastern Christian College, he begain raising

funds to go to Germany.

During a presentation at the Garrett Church of

Christ Mission's Round=Up, he met Janice Elaine Snyder and with Minnie
Coble's help, set out to take her to Germany as his wife,

Janice Elaine Snyder, oldest daughter of Myron Robert and Mary Fern
Snyder (who have 8 children) was born on Nov. 6, 1940 in^Woodburn, Ind.

She graduated from high school in Coldwater, Michigan.

Janice became a

Christian at the age of lOyears old and decided at that time to go into
missionary work.

Following graduation from high schoo, Janice entered

Great LakesBible College and spent, for three years, each Summer working
on the Yakama Indian Reservation with John Runyan,, as Bible Teacher, Camp
Cook, Office Secretary and helper in the children's home.

During her

senior year of Bible College, she presented McKinley Indian Mission at

every church possible, and was representing it at the Garrett Mission
Round-Up with the plan in mind of returning to McKinley Indian Mission

full time.

After much persuasion, Janice consented to come to Germany in

Octor of 1963, following her graduation the 8th, of June and their
marriage on June 15, 1963,

The first 9 months in Germany were spent in the Frankfurt area in

FCLU.5^

writing German workbooks for children, in working with Ed Fauz and studying
beginner's German,

In the Fall of 1964 they moved to Stammheim where

Deborah was born on Dec, 8, 1964,

In February, 1965 Janice started the children's Bible House which grew
during the next years.

The childrens work has been our strongest thrust

during the past 13 years.

The Children's Bible Hour was held each Wed,

and averaged 35 to 50 children.

Since nothing was available for >the

children the Phillips drew up their own program.

This led to the

starting of 3 youth groups which required much time and preparation.

The Phillips have had many interns and their efforts have been

spiritually

blessed as two couples from-these interns, stepped out on faith to start

new works.

They were Bill and Lela Rosenett who moved to Landstuhl and

work with the military personnel in the Kaiserslautern area. The other
couple are Rick and Delia Deighton, with Miss Diane Miller, who, after
laboring with us about 6 years moved to Heilbronn area and also worked

with military

pervice people.

Several other interns have gone on to work

with Toronto Christian Mission, in Berlin, in Karlsrauhe and Good News, Inc.

interns.

As close as one can tell, they have helped train approx, 20

To God be the glory for the strength granted to them to carry

on this work.

The Deightons helped Alva & Janice get adult worship

services started in 1971 and this work is now carried on by Alva,

Janice writes up the Children's Bible workbooks and supervises the

writing up of the Teacher's Quarters, This has progressed quite well.

Page 3

Janice is now ready to start on the 4th. quarter.

So far, 3 different

D.V.B.S. series (10 lessons in each series) have been written up and
3 quarterlies (13 lessons each),

The Phillips have purchased a press on which the teaching materials

in German are being printed by Jay Enck.

Jay has served as printer

for the past year and has done an outstanding job.

He is stationed

in the U.S. Army at Echterdingen, W. Germany until October, 1977.

In September of 1976 Alva had his first seizure and on October 14th,
had his second one.

or agree on them.

The doctors have not been able to explain these

This has brought about a real slow down in the

activities presently carried on.

The teaching materials are being

printed, as well as tracts for distribution, the adult services are

led by Alva, but the Children's Bible House has been dropped until

more workers are available.

At present time the Phillips only have

Jay Enck part-time to help share the load.

Janice also tutors English,

which grants wonderful opportunities to witness for Him,

The Lord willing, Janice, Alva and Deborah plan a furlough in 1978,
It is our desire to preach and teach the word of our Lord.

We want

to be found working daily in the vineyard of our Lord, bringing others

to Him.

Please be in prayer for us as we continue to do His will,
