Control Philosophy

Purpose of document
To explain the control philosophy and sequence of operation for primary variable chilled
water pumping system.

IPS-M

Components involved
1.

Pumps - Vertical inline type

2.

VFD- Variable frequency drive for pumps shall be with adequate quantities of I/O points
and with inbuilt PID controller. VFDs with pre-programmed HVAC applications are
preferred. Or alternatively standard VFD and separate preprogrammed variable
pumping controller can be considered.

3.

DPT - Differential pressure transmitter shall be of desired range suitable for installing
across chilled water Supply & return main headers.

4.

Flow meter - Flow meter shall be installed in chilled water supply header after bypass
line and in the main line catering to load. It shall have inbuilt transmitter to generate
proportional analog signal.

5.

Bypass Valve - Bypass valve shall be with modulating type actuator.

Control philosophy
1.

Based on the load variation the Differential pressure shall vary across supply and return
headers. This variation shall be sensed by DPT and it shall transmit the corresponding
signal to VFD controller. To maintain the set Differential pressure the VFD shall be
ramped up/down. In present case the minimum flow shall correspond to 375 GPM. i.e.
Minimum flow required chilled water flow rate for chiller.

2.

Being primary variable pumping system, VFD shall not be ramped down below its set
minimum RPM. This set RPM is dependent on the minimum flow requirement. IN NO
CASE the VFD shall be allowed to ramp down the set minimum RPM despite of any
further load reduction.

3.

Flow meter shall sense the actual chilled water flow to the building. As the chilled water
flow catering the load goes below the minimum Flow requirement of chiller, the
motorized valve on bypass line shall begin to open up proportionately and vice versa.
