Preface
This booklet is explicitly made for the course
Constructing Architecture at the University
of Technology of Eindhoven.
Based on a lecture series, an attempt has been
made to visualize my personal interpretation
of different design approaches from eight
architects of the Dutch and Flemish building
practice. The goal of this exercise is to point
out differences in ways of designing and even
similarities. Also the ways of visualizing and
the (dis-)advantages will be discussed.

The designs of Haiko show a strong
dependency on craftmanship and working
with the materials. Experimentation is the
main means through which a design
concept emerges. There is also a strong
respect regarding nature which shows in
material use.

Caro van de Venne

(BARCODE)

Caro van de Venne (BARCODE)

The buildings designed by Caro and her
team show a strong relation with their
suroundings. Most of the identity of a
building is derived from its context. The
facade is an important means of expression
of this identity. Through testing and
mockups the right tectonic means and
ways of expression are investigated.

Felix gets inspired by other architects such
as Mies van der Rohe and Rem Koolhaas.
This explains his fascination for creating
spaces with clean and precise detailing.
The preparation for the eventual execution
of the design is thorough. The construction
method also greatly influences the design
so it is done in an early stage.

David Gianotten (OMA)

David Gianotten (OMA)

For David, working with multiple teams
across the globe is an everyday practice.
There is a lot of attention for specific needs
of the client and the integration of projects
in different cultural contexts. Conceptual
design that works on a practical level is in
some cases prefered over beautiful
building designs.

Jan Pesman (CEPEZED)

Jan Pesman (CEPEZED)

Building concepts are generated quite
intuitively by Jan. The presence of daylight
in buildings is one of the key elements that
further influences design decisions. Also
the use of technology and innovative
design solutions play an important part in
the design process. The detailing is also
put to the test by making mockups.

Marco Vermeulen (Studio Marco Vermeulen)

The focus for Marco lies on integration of
buildings in their surroundings. Therefore
landscape design is a major activity in his
Studio with special attention for self
sustaining environments. Before any
design decisions are taken, a vast amount
of research and data collecting is done to
map the impact of a design.

Jo Taillieu (Architecten De Vylder Vinck Taillieu)

The way of designing is intuitive in the
sense that Jo documents what he discovers
while he explores and tackles a project.
The (type of) drawings are an important
way of communication in this process. The
designs need time to fully adapt to their
surroundings. After construction the
design comes to life by its ordinary use.

Paul Diederen (DiederenDirrix)

According to Paul, technology, economics
and design are 3 important factors to keep
in mind during a building process. New
BIM technology has allowed for more focus
on the initial design phase, reducing
modification costs. A lot of attention goes
to choosing the materials and their
performance quality, as well as detailing.

Reflection
The circular design of the diagrams is
deliberately chosen to represent the design
process as a non-linear process, because it can
go back and forth and sometimes a huge step
back must be taken to move forward.
The advantage to this type of flow chart
diagram is that it allows for different influences
and external factors to come into the process,
as shown with the arrows. The terms in black
represent actions or products that come into
play at a specific phase of the project.

A possible disadvantage that I found was that

the circle still suggests a kind of completeness
since final design marks the end of the circle.
The circular movement can only be complete if
you take a big step back. It was not my
intention to suggest that a design process can
ever be complete or finished. Even when the
building is completed, the architect still holds
responsibility for the design decisions that
have been made, because it will impact its
users for a long period of time.
