MarcEdit Instructions and Screenshots Galore

MARC Breaker [from StartPage]


1. Click MARC Tools under Frequently Used Tools
2. Browse for Input File (the MARC file)
3. Output file
4. Can select browse & type name in same folder
5. Shortcut: Copy input file & change suffix of output file to .mrk
6. Under Functions, the MarcBreaker radio button should be selected by default
7. Click Execute
8. Will give a message in results box, such as:
9. 306 records were processed in 0.296875 seconds
10. Click Edit Records Button at bottom to open the file into the MarcEditor

Separate MARC records (outside of MarcEditor): Tools Select MARC records [from StartPage]

Will then export records in a temporary .mrk file
Saving will save it back into original file
Save as will save into new file

Splitting Files: Tools MARCSplit [from StartPage]
1. Source file is file you want to separate
2. Will separate files into destination folder
3. Records per file or # of files

Merging Records (Tools Merge Record) [from StartPage]


1. Source File is file that the fields will be merged into
2. Merge File is what the data will be extracted from (and placed with the records in the source file)
3. Save File is what the finished product goes into (unless you check box labeled Merge into Source

1. Server Address: Example: mulibraries.missouri.edu/staff/catalogdept/mospace/mospaceharvesting.htm
2. Set Name: hdl_10355_2475
3. Metadata Type: Select what metadata the repository uses

Using Z39.50: MarcEdit Z39.50/SRU client [under Frequently Used Tools in StartPage])
1. Search: Text string to search on
2. Field: Choose appropriate field
3. Options: Can select database (default is Library of Congress)
