[COMPANYNAME] recognizes the hazards of working with security dogs.

Only competent
employees will be allowed to handle or control security dogs at [COMPANYNAME] worksites.

The handler of a guard dog under [COMPANYNAME] activities shall keep the dog under his
control at all times while it is being used as a guard dog at any premises except
a) while another handler has control over the dog; or
b) while the dog is secured so that it is not at liberty to go freely about the premises.

[COMPANYNAME] shall not use or permit the use of a guard dog at any premises unless a notice
containing a warning that a guard dog is present is clearly exhibited at each entrance to the
premises. The notice should contain the name, address and telephone number of the owner of any
security dogs on the premises.

The [COMPANYNAME] will ensure that all dogs and purchased or hired on behalf of the company
complies with the relevant legal requirements which is the Guard Dogs Act 1975 and with the
relevant British Standard which is BS 8517-1:2009 Security dogs. Code of practice for the use of
general purpose security dogs

It should be the duty of [COMPANYNAME] to ensure adequate boarding facilities are sought for
the dogs, some points that should be taken into consideration when kenneling dogs are as follows;

Kennels should be located away from sources of noise or pollution that could cause injury
or stress to dogs.
Kennels should be sited in areas that protect from excessive damp, heat and draught.
Where dog kennels are constructed outdoors they must protect dogs from rain and wind
and be adequately shaded.
Outdoor kennels must have a fully enclosed section to provide a sheltered sleeping area.
Where kennels are constructed indoors, temperature, humidity and ventilation must be
considered.
Floors of kennels should be made of an imperious material to assist cleaning and drainage.
Sealed concrete is ideal. Wood, brick, unsealed cement block, dirt or grass floors are not
acceptable.
Food and water containers should be preferably non-chewable and non-spillable.
Each dog should have access to a kennel which should be adequate to the size of the dog

Kennel floors should be sloped to enable wastes and water to run off. A collection drain
should be provided.
Dogs must be protected from extremes of temperature.
Kennels must be adequately insulated to provide protection against excessive heat and
cold.
Metal kennels are not acceptable unless adequate insulation and shade over the kennel
are provided.
All kennels must be provided with a raised sleeping area.
Any bedding provided for dogs must be changed frequently and kept clean and dry.

[COMPANY NAME] should seek advice from a registered vet to assess how often each dog needs
a health check, and about the things [COMPANYNAME] can do to protect each dogs health.
Advice regarding routine and preventive healthcare, such as vaccination and treatments to control
parasites (e.g. eas and worms), would be advised.

[COMPANYNAME] dogs are required to wear a collar and identity tag when in a public place.
Collars should be of the correct size and t, and should not cause any pain or discomfort. If using a
microchip as a form of identication, remember to keep the microchip database up to date with any
changes in your contact details.

[COMPANYNAME] should keep adequate records for each dog this should include;
name
sex
breed and type
distinguishing features
dates of vaccination
dates of veterinary checks and the name of the veterinary surgeon
worming medication - type and dates of administration
other medication - type and dates of administration

[COMPANYNAME] should keep adequate records for the placement of each dog this should
include;
business name, address and telephone number of the premises where a dog is placed.
name, address and telephone number of the owner of the premises if different from above

date of placement
date of collection
the dog's condition and preferably weight on placement
the dog's condition and preferably weight on collection
where dogs are housed at guarded premises for more than one week, a weekly record of
the dog's condition and preferably weight
