Strathmore town council proclaimed their support for the relief efforts and the evacuees of
Fort McMurray, where an unforgiving inferno
has claimed the homes of several thousand people and caused the evacuation of approximately
80,000 residents while continuing to spread to
neighbouring communities.
Although various Alberta communities, including Strathmore, have held fundraisers, collected donations, and even travelled north, the
devastating situation prompted council to direct
administration to bring back terms of reference
for a task force, on May 4, and emphasize the
continued need for monetary donations to the
Red Cross.
The current situation thats transpiring up in
Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo is somewhat
troublesome to me, said Councillor Brad Walls,
a former fireman who raised the issue in council
chambers at the regular council meeting.
Obviously the biggest thing that we can do for
these people right now is supply the Red Cross.
They really need funds up there. Being on the
front lines in Carseland a number of years ago,
you really gain the appreciation for what the men
and women in uniform are doing for these people at this time. Its a very serious situation.
Walls further acknowledged the breakneck
evacuation, the other hundreds of fires the province was forced to control, and the work provided by over 200 firefighters.
Other council members echoed the concerns
and suggested taking on an active role to indicate the towns support, not only for the residents of Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo, but
also those who call Strathmore home.
Many of those oilfield workers live here in
Strathmore and work up there, and I think its
going to affect them short-term and long-term
and I would like to give them some sort of support, said Councillor Steve Grajczyk.
I know back when Brooks had trouble with
their slaughter house with all their meat, we did
donate to the Red Cross there and I think because theres a lot of people that pay taxes here
in Strathmore, we should be doing the same
thing for the Red Cross out there.
Theres not only the short-term immediate
program here, theres the long-term of clean up
of everything else. This is a disaster that affects
everyone in the province on a long big scale.

Strathmore local takes Miss Calgary title

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Only a year after 22-year-old Bailee
Simonin decided to break her personal barriers and take to the stage at the
Miss Calgary competition, where she
won first runner-up, the Strathmore
local grasped the title when she was
crowned 2016 Miss Calgary on May 14.
Born and raised in Strathmore, Simonin initially signed on with Patti Falconer Agencies for modeling roughly three
years ago, where she received constant
nudges to partake in pageantry. Embracing the challenge, Simonin decided
to step out of her comfort zone, practiced public speaking, and zipped up
her evening gown to stand beside 65
other contestants - representing their
respective regions - at last years Miss
Universe Canada. While she did not
place within the Top 10, Simonin impressed the judges with her interview
responses, knowledge of Calgary and
technique at the 2015 Miss Calgary
competition, and awarded her the first
runner-up position.
With nothing to lose, Simonin once
again faced off against eight other pageant hopefuls last weekend.
I never originally started out saying I
want to try pageants, said the Calgary
royalty.
Youre stepping out of your comfort

zone and thats when you really start

to grow as a person and you try things
that might scare you, but when you accomplish it you get up on stage and
that wave of relief when youre done
definitely builds your confidence.
The Miss Calgary competition was
Simonins third pageant, and she recognized experience as
a contributing factor
to her recent success.
Knowledge of the process, preparation, and
not memorizing her
answers to the questions beforehand may
also have played a part
in her getting the title,
she said.
Overall,
however,
she noticed the most
change in herself.
I think throughout
the year, Ive really discovered a lot about myself, she added.
When I look back a
couple years ago, did I
think that Id be confident enough to
do it? Maybe not. But now definitely
and it gets better each time that you do
it. Its good for the youth to try things
that not everyone is doing. Dont be
just ordinary, try something out of the
ordinary.

Having been crowned this years Miss

Calgary, Simonin is already becoming
aware of the responsibilities associated with her new position. Although
she is looking forward to making an
appearance and taking part in the Calgary Stampede pancake breakfast, the
Calgary Meals on Wheels Great Pie
Chuck and Chomp, and
the Lilac Festival, her
roots and the last eight
years working at the local Boston Pizza have
her exploring volunteer
work and becoming involved in local events
as well.
She also recently
joined the Strathmore
Ladies Auxiliary - her
grandmother has been
a member of the Strathmore Royal Canadian
Legion Branch 10 for
over 60 years and
hopes to get involved
with the Make a Wish
Foundation, Calgarys
Childrens Hospital and the Canadian
Cancer Society.
Simonin is unable to take part in Miss
Calgary in the future, now that she has
won the title, but is adamant about
competing for the Miss Universe Calgary title again in a few years time.

Do you need Life Insurance?

Canadians may need to rethink

their risk management!
In a recent study conducted by the
Life Insurance and Market Research
Association, it revealed only 38% of
Canadians own personal life
insurance. They also reported that 68%
of Canadians admit to having no
insurance or that they are under
insured. These studies concluded
that Canadians rely heavily on group
benefits for their familys insurance
protections which are often much less
than most peoples insurance needs.

Safe sun-exposure can prevent skin cancer

appearing in the future. Use your sunscreen
whenever you are going out in the sun for prolonged
periods of time. If you normally burn in 10 minutes
without sunscreen, using a sunscreen with a SPF 30,
you will have 300 minutes of protection providing
the lotion is reapplied if you sweat a lot or swim.
Reapplication is very important for good protection.
June is Brain Injury Month in Canada. One of
the important facts Brain Injury Canada wants to
emphasize is that a concussion is a brain injury. The
image of the skull being a container for a lump of
Jello is a very vivid and apt picture to keep in mind
when taking part in risky contact sport activities.
It is really important to protect this lump to avoid
complications that could last a lifetime.
Marinating meat before babecuing seems to
reduce the risk of cancer-causing compounds called
heterocyclic amines. Avoiding heavily charred meat
will reduce this risk as well.
Read carefully those colourful labels pharmacists
put on your prescription bottles. An important one at
this time of year is: You should AVOID prolonged
or excessive exposure to direct and/or artificial
SUNLIGHT while taking this medication. This
means the drug you are taking may cause a skin
rash, itching, burning or stinging sensation when
your skin is exposed to the sun. Our pharmacists
will discuss this with you if your drug is a concern.
We will ensure you get the right information on
each prescription we fill.

Brentwood bids adieu to beloved principal

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

Fun, dedicated and the voice of Brentwood Elementary School are some of the
ways staff and friends use to describe
Laurie Huntley, who at the end of the
school year will retire from an almost
40-year-long career in education.
There came a time, said Huntley,
principal of Brentwood Elementary
School. In the past year I just got two
lovely grandchildren, I just decided to
work less and play more. I think I am
still going to stay connected in various
ways to education.
Huntley began her career teaching
in Rockyford where she found herself
under the mentorship of two teachers,
Ken and Grace Wong. She eventually applied for the associate principal position
at Brentwood in 1989, because of the
advice of one of her mentors, Dr. Gary
McKinnon, then Golden Hills School District Superintendent. In 1998 she became
the principal of the elementary school
and has poured her passion and personality into the school.
She has always put the school and the
students and the staff first before herself, said Shaunna Muenchrath, a secretary for the school who has worked with
Huntley for nearly 14 years.
She is very dedicated to the school.
She ate bugs for the school, she has been
duct-tapped to the wall twice for fundraising for the school and she camped
out on the school roof one night then
woke up in the morning and sprayed the
kids with a water gun.
Her jokes and pranks may be one of
her lasting legacies but so is the care and
dedication she had for the students that
have come through the schools doors.

Laurie Huntley, Brentwood Elementarys lovable

and caring principal, will soon be retiring.

A passion for education and a love for

children got her into the field, but they
have continued to be the force for her to
do all the things she has done to improve
the school and push the students to be
the best they can be. Under her administration, Brentwood and its students have
undergone many changes. These changes are the most exciting parts of Huntleys job, and will be the hardest part to
leave behind. However, she knows that
now it the time for her to move on to the
next phase of her life where she hopes
to indulge in some of the hobbies she
hasnt had much time for, such as playing golf or reading late into the evening.
Yet she hopes to stay involved perhaps
coming back to sub because she misses
the students, or perhaps one day becoming a trustee as she believes this will be
one way she can continue to ensure the
students of Brentwood have the best
possible start for the future.
Laurie Motley, one of the teachers
who worked with Huntley for roughly
30 years and, who has been on the receiving end of many of her pranks said:
We will miss her and there is going to
be a huge gap in our school when she
is gone.

Entrepreneurial camp seeks youths

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Celebrating its 20-year anniversary, the Alberta
Youth Entrepreneurship Camp (AYEC) is offering
60 teenagers from south and central Alberta, including four local individuals, the opportunity to
become business savvy and awaken their entrepreneurial frame of mind.
Every year, the complimentary camp a Community Futures initiative provides those 13 to
15 years of age with a one-week entrepreneurialbased camp to provide the education of business
training with a summer camp environment. Zip
lining and horseback riding aside, the camp challenges the participants to take on a leadership
role, build teamwork, develop a business, and create a product to be sold at a market at the end of
the camp.
The big benefit will be to learn entrepreneurship, economic development, and growing our

rural communities, said Wendy Gerbrandt, community economic development coordinator.

Thats the key point. We want our kids to come
back and start businesses, so the more we can
build that entrepreneurial spirit up, the better we
are.
In the past, the experience required the youths
to build up their capital, devise a product, and collaborate together with mentors participants who
have taken part in the camp in previous years. Last
year, six students applied for the four spots with
Community Futures Wildrose, and Gerbrandt expects to have a good mix in applications of those
new to the camp and those who have visited the
camp before again this year.
Campers will also be exposed to guest speakers and participate in workshops, which will teach
the components of a business plan, advertising,
record keeping, marketing, and cash-flow. After
splitting up into teams to come up with a business
idea, they will meet with suppliers and bankers,

Councillor Denise Peterson agreed
with Councillor Grajczyk on the notion of working together with the
people in our community and inquired about a standing committee or task force for moving forward in
a supportive mode.
According to administration, the
town received a direct request from
Fort McMurray looking for disaster social services assistance for the
80,000 people currently displaced.
The assistance would be directed to
the centres where the residents found
shelter, not Wood Buffalo or Fort McMurray, council was assured.
Currently, two members of administration one of them Deputy CAO
Linda Nelson are already registered
with the Provincial Disaster Social
Services.
To further voice Strathmores support and allegiance, Strathmore mayor Michael Ell made an attempt to
contact the Fort McMurray Mayor Melissa Blake to no avail two weeks ago.
We have an amazing province, a
province that wants to get out there
and make sure that we can help one
another, said Mayor Michael Ell.
There are many people that have
been displaced and I understand
that Suncor and Shell have evacuated
many of their workers that are living
in camps so the citizens of Fort McMurray have a place. There are many
things going on in the province and
if theres any way you can assist
theyre going to need help and assis-

tance and all sorts of things. Keep them in your prayers and
thoughts.
In a combined effort over the weekend, Strathmore and
Brooks were able to raise over $75,000 in cash donations
and deliver 55 pallets of supplies to the devastated area.
Strathmore residents have also housed several Fort McMurray families and gathered clothing and donations that were
then delivered up north.
Council voted in favour of directing administration to bring
back terms of reference for a task force to town council as
soon as possible.

WHY DID JESUS HAVE TO DIE?

A part of the answer lies in the fact
that a just and perfect God could
not simply sweep sin under the
carpet and go on running a perfect
universe. God must deal with the
injustice of sin. Suppose a criminal
should come before a judge and that
judge would simply excuse a crime
of murder, rape, or theft simply because the judge loved the criminal.
What would society think of such a
judge?
The Bible says: Shall not the Judge
of all the earth do right? (Genesis
18:25). Selfishness has a natural
consequence that eventually results
in death to the innocent (Romans.
6:23). Jesus, the Judge, assumed the
consequence of sin on the part of
man, rather than inflict death upon
the sinner. That consequence was
death.
How does Jesus death save us?
Martin Luther said that as God, He
could not die, so He became man
in order to die. On the cross, he
accepted the sin of man against
Himself. As a perfectly innocent man
he accepted the injustice of man
against man.
The death of Christ accomplishes
reconciliation, or reconnecting us
back to God. Romans 3:25 says, ...
whom God set forth to be a propitiation for our sins. Propitiation
literally means something that
appeases a deity.
However, in the Biblical sense it
means much more than this. It can

mean to accept hurt, to forgive,

to show mercy. As sinners we
transgress Gods perfect law and
have no legal right to exist. But God
Himself, who sits as Judge accepts
the hurt, pays the price, forgives, and
offers mercy.
If a husband should say a harsh
word against his wife, and the wife
does not retaliate, but lets the word
fall upon her heart and crush her
spirit; if she forgives and treats her
husband as though he had offered
only words of praise she pays the
price of his sin against him.
It is this way that God pays the price
of our salvation. The Bible does not
say that Jesus paid propitiation, but
that He is a propitiation for our sins
(Rom. 3:25, 1 John 2:2; 4:10). This
means that He, being God, bears
the hurt in order to give mercy and
forgiveness.
Sinners may receive this justification
and become safe to save (Romans
5:17)! Repentance comes as we see
how our sins treated Christ (Acts
5:31). When we confess our sins and
ask Him to remove sin from our lives,
He will give us power to become
safe to save (1 John 1:9, John 3, 1
John 3:9). As we receive this salvation we will seek forgiveness from
those we have wronged and live a
life of love by His power.
May the Lord bless you abundantly!

School Fuel continues to serve

SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Junior Reporter

Since 2009, Hope Community Covenant Churchs
(HCCC) School Fuel has provided a nutritious
breakfast to an estimated 350 children every day.
The local, non-profit program was founded by
HCCCs former Childrens Ministry Director Christin Dewald who asked surrounding schools if there
was a way that the church could serve them. From
their recommendations, School Fuel was formed to
provide breakfast for students who may not receive
breakfast at home or would strongly benefit from
some extra sustenance to aid in a successful school
day.
If they have something in their tummy versus
if theyre hungry, theyre focussing on the fact that
they are hungry and that they dont have anything
to eat and so theyre more preoccupied with their
basic needs not being fulfilled ... it absolutely helps
them improve their attention and their ability to
focus and learn, said an anonymous community
member.
Meredith Goertz, the current orchestrator of
School Fuel, personally understands the true impact of the work the church is doing for Strathmores children and youth.
There were a few years when I was young
where my Mom, a single mother with three girls,
didnt have enough money to feed us, she said.
If I can help another child avoid going to school
hungry, I will gladly spend my time and resources
with a program that does just that.
The project is run by approximately 35 dedicated volunteers who purchase necessary supplies, prepare meals, and serve three elementary
schools, one junior high school, and a kindergarten
to Grade 8 school. Every second Tuesday for two
hours, community members meet at the Strathmore

High School commercial kitchen and bake approximately 2,500 muffins of various flavours.
In addition to muffins, the program also delivers
sliced cheese and apples for students who utilize
the service. In one year, 125 pounds of cheese, 900
pounds of fruit, and 6,000 muffins are prepared
and delivered.
School Fuel is non-profit and so it relies on support from the government and from independent
donors. This year alone, School Fuel has received
generous donations from United Way, Cenovus,
Alberta Culture and Tourism, Cheadle Lions Club,
Strathmore Sobeys, Encana, Bell Tone, United
Church Women, Strathmore Childrens Festival, The
Donald and Linda Murray Foundation, and various
other independent donors who have contributed to
the annual cost of $18,000 dollars.
One way School Fuel has influenced me has
been in seeing how our community gets behind
programs that help improve the wellbeing of children, she said. People have stepped up to help
each year and as the need increases, so does the
number of people needed to be involved.
Recently, School Fuel has seen a major increase in
the amount of students who receive a daily breakfast, which is thought to be a result of the current
economic downturn which has plagued the province. There have been times when finances were
low and I brought it to God, she said. I know not
every project is meant to go on forever so when we
began to see gifts arrive one after another, I knew
we were supposed to continue on.
The churchs current focus is to go deeper and
wider within the community and their faith, but to
continue to serve, additional volunteers and donations are requested.
For children with food scarcity issues, its a tangible way to show them Gods love by being the
hands and feet of Jesus, concluded Goertz.

Strathmore Youth Club continues

to have an impact
SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Junior Reporter

To answer a growing need within our community, The Strathmore Youth Club has been promoting
youth well-being by providing affordable activities
and counselling for kids aged six to 17 throughout
the many hours of the week.
Over the past five years, participation has continued to increase and the club is seeing the effects of
Albertas economic situation on its enrollment, specifically in the usage of its lunch program, Essential Edibles. Wheatland County Food Bank along
with other donors, provide schools, churches, Family Community Support Services (FCSS), and childrens services with lunch vouchers to distribute
to children and youth. Others are able to purchase
a lunch for about four dollars. On May 3rd alone,
40 youth and children were served lunch provided
by the Strathmore Youth Club. Independent of Essential Edibles, the after-school ABC program for
children which has a maximum of 25, sees between
20-25 kids each day, Outreach sessions generally
are at full capacity, and programs for the summer
are quickly filling up, even faster than last year.
The youth club I think is really important to the

town because we have a lot of parents who sometimes struggle with finding things that their kids
can be involved in that are affordable, said Councillor Pat Fule, a board member since 2010.
Now, in 2016, the Strathmore Youth Club is serving more kids and youth than ever with statistics
showing that 48 percent are from rural areas and 52
percent are from urban areas. They now have their
own building and are able to provide transportation for participants with two buses. With these resources and growing number of staff, the club is
able to offer programs such as Junior Chef classes;
field trips to malls, theatres, and sports games; life
skill sessions; free and subsidized lunches; leadership training; and summer camps. The hope is that
the Strathmore Youth Club will be able to enrich
the lives of the children and youth it serves while
ensuring that entertainment and counselling are
within reach and very affordable.
Councillor Fule concluded, its a really necessary
program and it helps kids and it helps youth and it
helps families and the stronger those things can be,
the better the town is in the long run.
Please view the Strathmore Youth Club website
for information on enrollment, programs, and how
to make a donation.

Valley Song sings for valleys of South Africa and Alberta

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Valley Song, a play about a South African granddaughter and grandfather,
will open May 19, on Rosebuds BMO
Studio Stage. Apartheid has just ended,
giving the coming-of-age granddaughter new freedom to pursue her dream
of a singing career, but her grandfather
doesnt want her to leave their small,
rural village. A well-known author, who
wants to leave city life and get back to
the land, witnesses their evolving story.
Its a generational story too, of the
older grandfather and the older author, said director David Snider. They
lived in the old South Africa, and were
now watching them have to adapt to
the new South Africa. It tells the story
of accepting change ... a change towards growth or accepting loss, and
the courage it takes to actually do that.
The granddaughter, Veronica, is
played by Rosebud School of the Arts
graduate Lennette Randall, who also
wrote the melodies for Veronicas
songs.
David LeReaney, whos had a 40-year
acting career in theatre, film and television but is new to Rosebud Theatre this
season, plays both author and grandfather. LeReaney, a well-known dialect
coach, uses two different dialects to
distinguish his roles.
The play itself is simple but deep,
and that has been really rich, Snider
said. One of the things thats richest
is that it will have a lot of the spirit of
Africa and thats a delightful thing to
taste and experience.

But he emphasized that we dont

have to know Africa to appreciate this
story.
Theres a lot of common ground
in southern Albertan rural life to the
world of this small South African village, he said.
As a father, Snider is watching his
teenage sons grow up, and as a Rosebud resident, he knows the village may
also be on the verge of growth. He said
the play urges him to have the courage to listen deeply to my life and to
have the courage to accept change.
A reality in Rosebud is, were likely
to see a surge of new homes and community members. Our village, my life
in this village, is also going to change,
he said. Theres goodness in some
new growth, but a loss of some of the
simple things that I have loved about
living here. And thats part of life.
Valley Song brings to Rosebud even
more of the treasure that this valley
holds, Snider said. Our valley itself
has a song that draws people to come,
and I think this story articulates what
that song means emotionally.
(Valley Song) also echoes the mandate of Rosebud School of the Arts,
which is to cultivate and encourage
new artist voices, he said. This is exactly the story. Young Veronica -- who
is a very talented, passionate, driven
young woman -- wants to live her life
as an artist, for a living, as a vocational
artist.
Valley Song runs at 5 p.m., May 19 to
June 25 on the BMO Studio Stage. Get
tickets at rosebudtheatre.com or 1-800267-7553.

Students show tells of love

and hardship in wartime
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Geordie Cowan, a Rosebud School
of the Arts graduating student, will
perform his Final Project, Letters in
Wartime by Kevin Brown and Stephen
Scriver, May 27-29.
The play is the story of Allan, an
RCAF pilot, and his girlfriend Moira,
during World War II. Allan goes to war,
Moira gets a truck-driving job at home
in Alberta, and they stay
in touch through letters.
Moira writes about home,
while Allan writes about
war: the flights he takes,
the challenges he faces,
the buddies he loses.
Cowan said this performance is a departure
from his usual roles,
which recently included
Dinosaur in Sarah and
the Dinosaur with Fire
Exit Theatre, and Malcolm in Sleeping Beauty
at Rosebud Theatre.
Im a very comedic,
physical actor, he said. Im kind of a
Jim Carey Mr. Bean type.
For this project, he wanted to challenge himself with something different
a Canadian historical romance with a
strong story but he brings his usual
gifts to the role.
Im bringing forth the natural comedy that I have, he said, and its informing me and helping me grow as an
actor.
Cowan is producing this show as well
as performing it, and that also pushes
him to grow.
You have to know all the questions
that your crew that youve hired will
ask, he said. You need to be three
steps ahead, even though youre a student and you have no idea what youre
doing.

He has no doubt itll be worth it.

I will come out of this project with
more knowledge than I have out of any
other project that Ive done about myself, about the world of theatre, about
my peers, he said. And its an exhilarating experience.
Cowans cast and crew support his
growth. Moira is played by Cassandra
Garbutt, who just finished her second
year at RSA.
Shes great. Shes already surpassed
me (in acting skill), Cowan
said.
Paul F. Muir, RSAs education director, is directing the
show.
Hes really been a guiding light and a challenger,
Cowan said. Its been really
encouraging, really helpful.
He hopes Letters in Wartime will help his audience
grow too.
Its really important to
remember what love is
put through and the many
meanings that love has.
Thats a strong theme in this
play, he said. Youll walk away from
this play with an appreciation of what
your grandparents have done and what
has happened and what the world has
done to keep us alive.
If you want to understand a wider
range of life, you should come. If you
want to educate yourself on the journey
of an RCAF pilot through training, then
you should come. If you want to understand love more, you should come.
Letters in Wartime plays in Rosebuds
Akokiniskway Gallery, May 27 at 2 p.m.,
May 28 at 10 p.m., and May 29 at 2 p.m.
and 7:30 p.m. Its recommended for mature audiences. Tickets are $15. To reserve, e-mail capeinthewind@gmail.com
or post a request on the Facebook page,

Did You Know?

Several stories are passed around to show how the
month of May was named. The most widely accepted explanation is that
it was named for Maia, the Roman goddess of spring and growth.
Her name related to a Latin word that means increase or growth.

Food drive for

Fort McMurray
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) usually
has a food drive twice a year, but this
one was a little different.
Donations from this food drive will
go to the Calgary Food Bank to be distributed to the Fort McMurray evacuees
staying in the city.
We wanted to see what we could
do as a school and with our students
to reach out to the people of Fort McMurray who have been affected by these
fires, said Tony Hamilton-Irving, a HCC
teacher involved in the drive. One of
the things we know is that these people are in large part distributed through
three different communities in Alberta,
major centers including Calgary and Edmonton.
The school encouraged all their students to bring a minimum of one item,

mostly non-perishable like a can of soup

or box of Kraft dinner.
The drive ran from May 2 to May 13
and the organizers managed to fill 15
boxes with 442 items.
Hamilton-Irving said it was a good
way for students to connect with those
affected by the fires and offer them aid.
The school decided to dedicate this food
drive to the evacuees after the Calgary
Food Banks website reached out to
people for donations, saying anything
marked for Fort McMurray would be distributed to the centres in Calgary where
they are staying.
The school usually donates their
items from their food drives and clothes
drives to the Strathmore Food Bank or
the Strathmore Community Crisis Shelter. They have been doing this since the
school opened 13 years ago as part of
the charity work Catholic schools are required to do.

Season wrap-up
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Celebrated for its strong
choral tradition and past
success, Brentwood Elementary School commemorated the end of another
triumphant year when all
three choirs received esteemed recognition within
48 hours.
After the Brentwood Senior Choir placed second
for a second consecutive
year with a superior mark
of 91 at provincials, Brentwood music teacher Carolyn Steeves was still on the
bus with her students when
she received an e-mail informing her of the primary
choirs win made up of
Grade 1 students at the
Calgary Performing Arts
Festival where they performed two weeks prior.
Only hours later, the elementary school became
aware that the junior choir
Grade 2 and Grade 3
had also placed second,
competing against nine
choirs and receiving a rating of distinction and a
mark of 88.
This festival year has
been remarkable, because
never ever since Ive been
at this school did all three
choirs win something within 24 hours of each other,
said Steeves. Its an external verification for what
theyre doing and I think
thats important to recog-

nize their hard work. Weve

had choirs in our school
since Ive been here and
we have won at provincials
before and we have won at
the Calgary Performing Arts
Festival before, but just for
them all to win that close
together was fun.
Although work ethic and
a long-standing choral tradition contributed to this
years success, Steeves also
praised the choristers for
recognizing the importance
of a strong musical blend,
understanding
vowels,
phrasing, and breathing,
and using their sound and
face to convey a story and
emotion. While the primary
and senior choir were able
to perform for their awards,
the junior choir was required to submit an audio
recording eliminating the
dimension of influencing
judges and the audiences
through their physical performance.
Brentwood
Elementary
School wrapped up their
festival season for the year.
I think all three choirs
worked really hard as their
own entities and all tried to
pursue excellence and sing
their very best, Steeves
added. The kids have done
well and theyve been recognized and the schools
been recognized for a longterm music program thats
been here and its been a
nice feather in our hat to
end the school year with.

Open house for compost pad issues

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

Bio-cycle, the new owners of the compost pad north of Strathmore, recently
held an open house hoping to talk with
residents living around the pad who
have some issues with the smell and the
expansion of the project.
We have had some people who have
raised some concerns with us and rather
than chatting with them over the phone
we wanted to come and meet them in
person, said Mark Grunert, vice president of operations at Bio-cycle.
Listen to their concerns and let them
know what the plans are for the future,
which include you know some investment in technology, we added a local
supervisor to the mix out there so we
can better manage and monitor our
compost pad as well as relationships
around the area.
The open house had about 50 people come out to voice their concerns,
but the company thought it went quite
well, and said they will try and fix the

issues that the residents brought to the

table.
Opal and Jim Seifert, who live near
the pad brought one of the issues forward.
For 18 years we have had this terrible smell that can come at any time
usually on weekends, said Opal Seifert.
[On a] nice day you open your windows and get hit right in the face with
that smell. It is depreciating our property values.
This sentiment seemed to be the
problem that many of the residents
brought up during the evening according to Grunert.
The smell has been a big issue since
the pad opened up but Bio-cycle, who
took over the pad in the fall of 2015, is
hoping to reduce the problem as well as
the other issues brought up at the open
house, with new technology.
In an effort to reduce the odour, Biocycle plan to use static aeration and improved operations at the business. They
recently acquired some new machinery,
which will help them process the mate-

rial to get down to the bottom of the

pad where they can install their aeration technology. The aeration will allow
for constant airflow through the piles,
which will help reduce the amount of
turning that is required and will reduce
the smell.
Some of the other issues that were
brought up were the road traffic in the
area, as well as the speed that the hauling trucks travelled and the amount of
dust that comes off the road. Grunert
stated communication with one of the
companies that does hauling for them
was established to address driving
slower to increase safety and lower the
dust. They will also be looking into dust
control options for the neighbours who
are being affected.
These changes along with the aeration technology should be in place by
the end of summer when the group will
hold another open house to see how
their neighbours have been affected by
the improvements.
The open house was held at the Travelodge on May 13.

Strathmore local Jaimie Betterton, 18, has moved up in the
lacrosse world and is now playing for the Rockyview Silvertip Junior girls team. Betterton started playing for the Silvertips this year, the teams inaugural year, and has already
proven to be a valuable team member.
It has been great to have the opportunity that I have to
coach her again, said Lesley Hawke, the vice president of
womens field lacrosse who had previously coached Betterton.
She is such a talented athlete and it really doesnt matter
what she does she puts in 110 per cent and you can always
see the improvement with what she does because she works
really hard.
Hawke explained that Bettertons biggest assets were her
speed and drive, which meant she is always engaged when
she is on the floor. Due to such speed, her coaches usually
use the offensive player for power plays and transitions because even when she gets checked she usually comes away
with the ball still in her possession.
My adrenaline goes up very high and thats one of the
things that I like about it the most, said Betterton.
That is one of the things that people dont know, how
hard it is to actually play and be focused. So my favourite
part about when I play [is] just how excited I get and how my
adrenaline goes up so high.
She started playing lacrosse five years ago with the Venom
midget girls and in her second year made it onto Team Alberta. However, she was unable to go to nationals due to a
concussion. She later moved on to playing for the Junior A
Cardinals ladies team, and eventually ended up in Airdrie
playing for the new junior team, which takes in girls from
the surrounding areas, including Strathmore, that dont have
a junior girls team.
Head coach Pat Brown referred to Betterton as a tough and
talented player.
Betterton is not the only girl from Strathmore who plays
for the team. Raegan Burkholder is one of the teams defense
players who Brown said made great strides since joining the
team.
Shes a totally reliable defender out there now, said
Brown.
Im really happy with the way she has come along and
improved herself and she has done wonders.
He further explained that both players are a valuable part
of the team and have made a huge difference in the success
of the team.

Badgers Spring Football Camp in full swing

ANDREA ROBERTS

The Strathmore Community Football
Club (SCFC) began their second week
of spring training camp with players
continuing to improve on their skill development in preparation for the open-

ing of the fall season.

The camp is preparing the players for
try-outs for the peewee, bantam and senior community teams.
We have about 49-50 kids registered
up for the spring, said Carl Seafoot,
president of SCFC. We have a good
bunch at the peewee level and a fairly

good bunch at the bantam level and not

a bad bunch at the senior level.
While Seafoot said the camp is not
full, they do understand that the players
have other athletic commitments.
The focus of the camp is to run drills
and improve skills so no exhibition
games have been planned, as it is hard
to plan such events when the club has
no idea how many players will come
out.

Spartans soccer defeated by Okotoks

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Speed and skill notwithstanding, the Strathmore
Spartans boys soccer team
found themselves staring
down the barrel of defeat
earlier this week when they
faced off against Foothills
Composite High School
(FCHS) a team they triumphed over 4-0 earlier this
month.
With the previous outcome still fresh on the
Strathmore teams minds,
the Okotoks competition
was able to prey on the confidence and settle the score
4-0 in their favour.
This was just a payback
game, unfortunately, we
lost this one, said Spartan
Coach Kaitrin McDonnell.
It was probably because
we smoked these guys before and they were playing
just a little timid and not to
the best of their ability. We
did everything we needed to
do. They played well, they
just werent fast enough and
I think the intensity wasnt
there today. Maybe theyre
tired, maybe it was a case
of the Mondays, but we
werent on our best today.
The Strathmore Grade 10
to Grade 12 students managed to dominate the field
numerous times throughout
the May 16 game, but were
unable to make any completions. While a lack of communication and ball posses-

sion are contributing factors

to this years fluctuating
season, McDonnell said the
players were also unable to
move their feet during the
FCHS match.
As many of the players
are involved in various other school activities causing
scheduling conflicts, Strathmores boys soccer team
has felt the impact on their
performance this year.
Coaching staff suspect
the participation of a majority of the soccer players
in the Countys Track and
Field event earlier that Monday may have had an influence on the outcome of the
game.
Team commitment has
kind of been an issue, because we dont have everyone showing up for practices, so how can we be
better as a team and come
together when not everyone
can show up?, McDonnell
asked.
Our boys are highly involved with our school so
I cant fault them for being
in plays and playing other
sports. Its hard to share, but
we have to because I like to
give as many opportunities
as I can to the kids.
The Strathmore Spartans
boys soccer team will hit the
road to take on Canmore on
May 25, before hosting Holy
Trinity Academy on May 27.
The team is already preparing for zones in Canmore on
June 3-4.

The Strathmore Spartan boys soccer team were

unable to beat Foothills Composite High School
on May 16, when they lost 4-0.

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The Strathmore Spartans
rugby girls team carried forward the momentum of their
Springbank 7s Tournament
win, when they claimed a
significant victory over Bow
Valley High School last week
that paved the way to zones
and requires only one win to
compete at provincials.
The
Strathmore
High
School (SHS) team showed
off their strong backs positions and managed to slow
down several skilled players
on the opposing team on May
12, leading to a 43-5 win.
They played really well today and we worked out a lot
of defensive stuff and we can
start to see it implemented,
said Jerry Flaws, Spartan rugby girls coach.
We still have to keep working on that and we have to

move fast. Thats our biggest

thing now. The hesitation is
slowly going away but we
need everybody to lose the
hesitation and then well do
really well.
Numbers of the SHS girls
rugby players, which consisted of two teams, recently
dwindled, resulting in the
combination of both teams.
While the team has many
Grade 12s with much experience, Flaws said defense and
greater quickness of the line
will become the focus before
heading to zones where the
team will take on Foothills
Composite High School.
Our goal is to win zones
and to do that we need to
play well; its going to be a
tough game, said Flaws.
We have good athletes
in our school and our good
athletes play rugby where a
lot of other schools the good
athletes arent playing rugby

and thats our advantage. Theyll come

out and play where at other schools
they wont.
Furthermore he praised the fast moving backs and their ability to move the
ball well.
Over the past decade, rubys popularity has experienced tremendous growth
in the zone that stretches from Banff, to
Strathmore, to High River and to Olds.
What started out as three girl teams has
escalated to 10 currently, with boys rugby teams totalling 12. At the provincial
level, a third tier was needed to accommodate the number of teams.
According to Flaws, the womens success at the international level has also
become a catalyst in promoting the
sport locally.
Although the season has remained
steady, enduring a few losses while also
claiming several victories, the Strathmore athletes are challenging strong
teams.
Five years ago if I had a team this
strong, I wouldve walked all the way
through to provincials, said Flaws.
Weve won two and lost two. So it
proves how strong our league has gotten over the last few years.
The Strathmore Spartans rugby girls
team is heading to Banff on May 19, before taking on Foothills Composite High
School on May 25.

Swimmers excel in Trinity Christian Academys inaugural program

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Additional funds in the extracurricular
activity budget this year prompted the
creation of a swim team at Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) that created waves
recently when all 10 members were
awarded either a first, second or third
place finish at their very first swim meet
in Three Hills.
The program, the brainchild of Grade
4 teacher Rebecca Hennes and Kindergarten teacher Tricia Hincks, was
launched in January and ran until April
to provide students with another option to get involved in sports other than
those which are team-based.
Although familiarizing the young
swimmers Grade 4 to Grade 9 students with proper strokes and swimming techniques demanded time and
hard work in the pool, the athletes impressed their coaches at the meet on
April 9 when they all shaved at least five
seconds off their personal best times.
We had to do a lot of work with them
to get their strokes up to standard and
to the point where they could actually
swim in a competition and they worked
so hard and they improved so much,
said Hennes.
They improved to the point where
they were able to do very well in their
competition. From the first day we knew
we had a lot of work to do with them
and after the competition they totally
blew us away. They did way more than
we expected.
Hennes has been an aquatics instructor and lifeguard for the past 12 years,
and together with Hincks prepared a
proposal for their administrators, providing details and cost for the program
- $450 to secure two lanes at the Strathmore Aquatic Centre for the season.
With extra funds in the budget to launch
the program the swim team came to fruition. However, the coaches are hesitant
of its continuation next year, with funding reliant on wiggle room in the upcoming budget.
As the season ended on a high note,
Hennes is aware of the opportunity the
swim team offers students.
Not everyone is into team sports and
into team competitions and swimming
is more of an individualized sport where
you go and do your best, she added.
Its your achievement and it doesnt
really matter how the other people
around you are doing. So it was pretty
great for those who arent into competitive sports for them to be able to try
their best and feel their own achievement and find their own success too.
Hennes remains optimistic about being able to offer the swim program next
year and hopes to expand it to a maximum of 20 students.

A rising football star

Football camp

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Strathmore has produced many good
athletes over the years and Reid Jensen
is no exception.
The 14-year-old Holy Cross Collegiate
student previously played for the Strathmore Badgers football team. Despite
only playing for a few years his talent
has already begun to shine.
This is my third year playing football,
said Jensen. When I started I found out
that I was good at football and this is the
first year I have left Strathmore.
Jensen joined up for the Airdrie Raiders football winter camp, which takes
players in Grades 9-11 and teaches
them to further their skills. Jensen who
described himself as a pretty diverse
player acted as quarterback and wide
receiver while he has been playing wide
receiver and safety in Airdrie. He has

shows of his football skills during a game. He
currently plays for the Airdrie Raiders after he
attended a football camp where the coaches
found him to be a great player.

seen improvement in his game and Airdries Coach Steve Kemp attested to this.
He instantly stood out among the
Grade 9s and we liked what we saw,
said Kemp.
As the camp went on he started out

working the senior guys and earning a

spot.
Every week Jensen drives down to
Airdrie for practice but he is thankful
for the opportunity that the team and
coach has given him.
As Jensen continues to play for the
Raiders, Kemp hopes that he will grow
into a leader for the team.
I can definitely see him being a
leader for us moving forward and really
hope he is a leader for us, said Kemp.
I mean if his play keeps growing and
if he becomes more comfortable around
the guys then I think he could be a good
leader for us.
To get such praise from his coach
meant a lot to Jensen who sees himself
as a leader both on and off the field. Jensen would like to take his football career
to the pros perhaps getting a college
scholarship, which will open up more
opportunities for him in the future.

Continued from Page 20

It is also a good way to introduce the
players to their new coaches and to get
used to their training styles.
So there is a few adjustments everybody is shifting around everywhere,
kids are shifting around, coaches are
shifting around and yeah so it is a good
test drive, said Seafoot.
Doug Thiessen is the new head coach
of the peewee team while Sean Seafoot
is the new head coach of the seniors; he
is also the Zone 2 offensive line coach
for the Alberta Summer Games, which
features seven local players on that team.
SCFC is looking forward to carrying
on the success of the last season when
the peewees won their Junior B championship, Bantam went 6-0 and the seniors made it to the playoffs during their
first year in the nine-man league.

billet family with local player
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

When Strathmore local Shane Fraser
went to play hockey for the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, the Graham family became his billet family and opened their
home to him. Now he is returning the
favour as the Grahams are one of the
many families displaced by the Fort McMurray fires.
Fraser stayed with Brian, Kelly and
their son Brandon for about eight months
during the last year, while he played for
the local hockey team. He was grateful to have people he could be close to
well away from home. During that time
they became like a second family to him
and so it only seemed right that he help
them however he could.
To see what was happening in Fort
McMurray I thought it would be perfect

to see them again and bring them to my

house, said Fraser.
I dont know just be a good idea to
bring them in and under the circumstances, I thought it was the right thing
to do as well.
He explained that the family was
thankful for what he and his own family
have done for them in this tough time.
Fraser himself though is thankful for the
help they have received from the community as people have come forward to
help by bringing over food and other
needed goods.
The fire caused about 88,000 Fort McMurray residents to evacuate the town,
and many do not know whether they
will have a home to go back to. Fraser
said that right now for the family it is
a waiting game to see when they can
return home, but until then they have a
place to stay in Strathmore.

Students host golf tournament

for future Wheatland Crossing School
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

A desire to equip the currently under-construction Wheatland Crossing
School with all the bells and whistles
and place it on even keel with schools
in Strathmore and Drumheller has a
large number of students and parents
pulling hours of overtime to organize a
golf-tournament fundraiser in hopes of
inching closer to the $2 million target.
The Friends of East Wheatland Society (FEWS), a group of volunteers that
formed to fundraise for additional enhancements for the new rural school,
and over 40 students from Standard
School are orchestrating the Play for a
Reason Golf Tournament at Speargrass
Golf Course in early June.
While over half of the anticipated 144
golfers are already confirmed and 13
of the 18 sponsors are lined up, more
community involvement is required to
achieve their $30,000 goal.
The money is all for the kids, said
Greg Lendvay, associate principal
at Standard, Rockyford, and Hussar
schools. Its for them, so basically its
an opportunity for them to thank every person that spent $250 to golf that
day. Its very important that the kids can
look them in the eye and shake their
hands and say thank you very much for
helping us achieve our goals and building a better school.
To date, FEWS has raised over $1 million. The basic facility of the stand-alone
K-12 school is provided by the provincial government and will accommodate
students from Rockyford, Hussar, Gleichen, and Standard this September. With
their fundraising ambitions, the society

wants to offer future students Fashion

Design, Drama and Fine Arts, Welding,
Carpentry, a cafeteria, a multi-purpose
space and media room, an Agriculture
program, fitness centre, a gym equipped
with bleachers, and a playground.
To ensure such implementations,
the golf tournament provides a rare
six hole-in-one opportunities, with a
$10,000 prize for each totalling $60,000.
The sponsorship will also allow for
business advertising to be visible from
September to June. The fundraiser will
follow a best ball format with a prime
rib dinner and silent auction to follow
the result of 500 letters sent out by
current students requesting silent auction donations.
According to Lendvay, Encana Corporation became the title sponsor for
$5,000 in addition to the $50,000 that
was previously donated to the cause,
while Richardson Pioneer claimed the
cart sponsorship package for $2,000
and Centaur Products stepped up with
a generous monetary donation.
Its an ongoing thing, Lendvay added. Were working on bleachers right
now and then well move towards a
playground. When you do a golf tournament people interact and support a
cause, but they also get something out
of it. Its not just a straight up cash donation and at the corporate level its an opportunity for the to drive up business.
Golfers can reserve a spot for $250 or
register a team for $1,000. The Play for a
Reason Golf Tournament will take place
on June 7. For more information, on the
various sponsorship packages and for
more information contact Greg Lendvay
at 403-324-4127 or via e-mail (friendsofeastwheatland@gmail.com).

MEMORIAMS

DYLAN BRADLEY PENNA

January 24, 2000 May 23, 2015
Two Worlds One Family
In an instant you vanished.
Left a hole in our hearts so big,
that none of us will ever be the same.
Our hearts shattered irreparably.
In your short fifteen years here
you brought so much to each of us.
So much love, kindness, laughter,
grace, style, joy and courage.
You are an authentic, charismatic, loving son.
I am so proud and honored to be your mom.
You are the best brother a man could ever have.
A cherished grandson, nephew, cousin and friend.
You are everything to us.
You taught us that kindness is never the wrong choice.
That a gentle heart always wins.
You showed us that persistence, patience and practice,
pay big dividends. You will forever be
#11 on the courts - #1 in our hearts.
When you walked into a room,
the entire building lit up, not just the room.
When you left us so suddenly last May,
it felt as though all the lights were turned off,
and everything went dark.
You left us with an enormous gift.
The gift of love, gratitude and a profound
grasp of how truly precious life is.
We miss you fiercely, painfully and
with unapologetic sorrow.
The memory of you, your spirit, your smile,
flood our hearts with love and light.
The darkness of the pain is nothing
compared to the love and colors of you.
As we navigate uncharted waters
we embrace all the signs you send.
We are grateful to have your spirit among us.
Whether it be in the clouds, the butterflies, the feathers,
in the whisper of the wind, or in the warmth of the sun.
We feel all of your love and we love you endlessly.
Youre Unreal #11
