CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLAN

By: Elenita R. Pabellan

I.

Philosophical Statement
I believe Classroom Management is the significant factor in any
educational venue. I also consider that if students are in a safe environment,
learning can take place. This doesnt necessarily mean strenuous behavior
problems but rather a combination of setting the quality and nature in a class,
avoiding behavior complications with stimulating and pleasing curriculums and
meritoriously including all students in the classroom so that their needs are met.
Having the right environment for all students to learn is my principal objective of
realizing good classroom management for without it my students would not be
able to learn and the most important principle a teacher must abide is her
commitment. I believe that meeting the needs of my students is a very crucial
part of my classroom.
I am committed in creating my classroom a safe and interesting
environment and pleasing my students through the curriculum as well as getting
to know them and work together with them one-on-one. I want them to be
comfortable with the other students, as well as me, so that there can be
meaningful discussions and interactions. Talking will be common place in my
classroom, along with group work. I feel that I have a very patient and calm
attitude with my class. I ask students about their life outside of class and feel that
they respond in class even more, knowing that someone is paying attention to
them. I want them to feel comfortable asking questions of me. I think my attitude
towards the students is not overbearing or authoritative. I do not believe in
forcing the students to do anything. I want to encourage all students to participate
in class so that they can learn from each other as well as me. I want to have a
democratic and unbiased classroom so that students can learn. I want to be a fair
and reasonable as I can be, so the students trust me. I want to work with them in
all conditions so that we can achieve together and they dont feel like I am
overindulging or spoon-feeding them with information. I want students to be a
part of their own learning. I want to inspire students to learn and keep their
interest by using appealing curriculum. I want to involve students in rules about
the classroom as well as what curriculum they would like to study. I believe if
students feel they are involved in the activities of the classroom, they will be
more motivated to engage in the class and in turn they learn.

II.

Room Arrangement
Chairs will be arranged in two columns with four rows containing 4 seats. At
the center of the two columns is a pathway where I can freely move to and fro
during their classroom activities. Each column of seats will be divided into 2
groups where they can freely arrange their selves forming a circle every time
there will be an activity or class work. Having the chairs forming circle will
create an environment rich in discussions.
I think it is very important to engage students in discussion to try to draw out
and challenge ideas and let the class learn from each other. No one will be
sitting behind the circle or on the sides of the room; the class enjoys the eye
contact and facial expressions of everyone as they share ideas.
The teachers table will be put near the front door to avoid students from
going outside anytime. Near the teachers table about 1 meter, a cabinet for
the instructional materials will set. Above the cabinet, projector will be put up.
At the rear of the cabinet for IMs, fully loaded hand washing area that has
drinking water, clean drinking glasses will be set. Beside it will be the
separated and gender sensitive Comfort Rooms for boys and girls where the
pupils use them to comfort themselves.
At the front of the pupils chairs will be the blackboard, beside it another IMs
cabinets will be set up for easy taking. Above the blackboard, Projector
screen will be put up. It will be foldable.
Four ceiling fans will be put up equally within the classroom to ventilate the
whole classroom. Two forty watts light bulbs will also be put up inside the
classroom. Colourful curtains will be hanged on the four windows. Thalo blue
paint will be used to enhance the color of the room which will also make the
room cooler.
Reading corner will be set up at the right side of the room where the pupils
can easily grab the newsletters and other reference books and be able to
read. I want supplemental materials for students to have access to for
studying, writing or researching. I will have bookshelves in the corner where
students can research and use resources supplemental to the textbooks.
There will be a few computers for projects, reports and research, as well as
use of applications to present reports to the class.
As you can see by my drawing (see Attachments 1), I want to create an
environment in my classroom that is conducive to discussions and group
work. By arranging the students where they are facing each other, I believe
this leads to a more intimate environment as well as a space where I can get
to every student easily. I like to walk around the room while teaching, rather
than staying in one stationary place in the front. If the chairs are arranged as I
have said earlier, I can walk around, engage more students, and hopefully
create an environment where students can talk and share ideas freely and

comfortably. I intend to use group work as a different instructional technique

to include as many learners as I canusing multiple-ability tasks so that every
level of learner can be an active participant and they can learn from each
other.

Classroom Rules

The best rule that I have got and I would believe to be my outlook towards
classroom rules is that I need a classroom where learning takes place, and
if we can respect each other then we dont need any other "rules." I
absolutely believe in keeping a safe environment where put-downs and
name calling is not allowedthis also falls under respect. If I can have
respect for my students as well as having them respecting each other, I
believe this leads to a safe environment where learning can take place.
I may try to construct a class constitution if behaviors in the class are
conflictingly out of control. I really like the notion of having the students
involved in making their own rules and discussing with each other which
ones to put in the constitution. If the students are involved in making the
rules, I believe they will be more motivated to obey and the consequences
that will be implemented will not be battled against. I would have the
students write the final constitution on a poster board and hang it in the
room. I would also send the constitution home to have the parents sign it

and return it to me so that I can include them in what we are trying to

achieve in the classroom.
In relations to creating a safe environment for all to learn, I want to create an
environment with positive and frequent student-teacher relationships.
Especially in diverse classrooms where many students are from different
trainings and upbringing, I want to create an environment where students do
not feel that they are being treated unfairly. I do not want to label students or
assume their academic ability on the way they look or act. I do not want the
diverse settings to lead to situations where communication is not happening.
I feel this is where behavior problems may arise. I want to create an
environment where teachers accept the students as individuals with unique
and cultural difference; to respect, relate and like them; to listen and
communicate openly; understand and honor their family, culture, language,
and race this is according to Sheets and Gay, 1996.
I believe to succeed in having a classroom like this it is needed to have
great interpersonal skills more than classroom management skills. I want to
create an environment where I can intertwine the curriculum into my
students different lives and experiences. I want them to be able to share
these experiences and relate them to the material we are working with. This
is desirable to a diverse classroom. Where we can have fun with differences
and learn from each other.
If there is a consistent misbehavior problem, I will initially ask the student to
talk to me after class. I will talk to him/her about the positive things they are
doing in class and how I appreciate something they are doing, as in
participating in class for example. I will tell them why their behavior is
interfering in the class and have them meet with me later to make a plan of
how they will be able to stop the behavior.
In class, I will give them a warning and then ask them to move to the back of
the room to work by themselves. I always want to keep consequences in
line with the misbehavior. If the misbehavior continues, I will talk to the
student and make a phone call home. I might also ask the parent to come
into school for a meeting with the student. I think it is very important to
involve the parents. I do not believe in throwing a student out of the room
unless they are being harmful to others or me in the classeither physically
or verbally. I believe that misbehavior should be addressed with the teacher
and student communicating as much as possible.

Classroom Procedures

General classroom procedures include how to walk into the classroom, how
to ask for help, how to participate in class discussions, how to make
transitions between activities and classes, sharpen pencils, ask for a restroom
break, work independently and with others, get materials, address teachers
and other adults, address students, walk in the hall, respond in an emergency
or fire drill, listen to the teacher and follow directions, how to clean up one's
area, and the end of the day routines.
To teach walking into the classroom procedures, I will start on the first day of
school. I will talk about why it is important, list the steps on the board, model
the steps, and then have students practice.
My goal is to teach students to be independent and responsible during these
times. This activity varies, depending on the condition.
At the end of the day procedures will be taught starting on the first day of
school also. We will discuss why this is important. I will list the steps on the
board, model the steps, and have students practice them.
The steps are: 1. when the last class of the day is dismissed, walk into the
room quietly with hands to you. 2. gather homework or other materials from
desk and put things in backpack. 3. sit at assigned seat at big tables. 4. you
may talk quietly. 5. when bell rings, walk to door and walk down the hall to
exit.
In June, I will keep modelling and reinforcing correct procedures, and
emphasize reinforcing successful academic activities. I want them to
understand that successful social behavior will increase academic
performance. During the winter months, I will not continually reinforce correct
procedures. I will expect students to be learning how to manage themselves
and follow procedures automatically.
In July, I will give reinforcement when students are more responsible for their
own choices in following procedures.
During November I will reteach procedures to make sure everyone knows
them, and then reinforce independent behavior.
In January, I will review procedures once a week and reinforce correct
procedures and independent behavior.
In March I will evaluate the performance of students during the year and
review activities that students need practice on.

V.

Conclusion
As I stated earlier, I believe Classroom Management is the key to an
environment where learning can take place and students can feel safe
participating. I hope to create an environment that is conducive to learning and
involves all my students. I believe the most important part of classroom
management is not the behavior problems but creating a good relationship with
the students, encouraging them to succeed and setting high expectations for
them.
