Abstract
It is crystal clear that reading forms the background of education, but this is a big problem
generally in the public schools in Ghana.

This has alerted or prompted the researcher to

investigate the causes of pupils difficulty in word identification at Nanton - Kurugu E/A Primary
School in the northern region and find solutions to it.
The researcher observed that class four pupils could not identify and pronounce words correctly.
The researcher therefore realised that the difficulty of pupils in identifying and pronouncing
words had an influence in their overall academic performance.
The main purpose of the study was looking at the use of word cards to correct and enhance word
identification which will lead to good reading in Nanton - Kurugu E/A Primary School Class
four Pupils
