Introduction
For street lights, factors like remote control, networking and potential energy saving
are becoming increasingly important.
With this in mind, the street lights in a street shall be automatically switched
on and off at sunset and sunrise. In addition, it shall be possible to insert a switchon time for the street lights via SMS, or manually on site.

Solution

the solution:

In the automation solution, the street light is controlled with a LOGO! 8 connected
to a LOGO! CMR.
Setting a manual street light control (user-defined mode) or an automatic control
(astro clock mode) can be performed via SMS or LOGO! TDE.
In astro clock mode, the street light is switched off in the morning and back on at
night using the Astronomical clock function.
In user-defined mode, a user-defined time of day can be entered via LOGO!
display or LOGO! TDE at which the street light shall be switched on, the day after.
The time of day of the LOGO! controller is synchronized with an NTP server using
LOGO! CMR so LOGO! constantly has the correct UTC time.

Mode of Operation

3.1

Switching on the street lights by entering the time

manually (user-defined mode)
Determine manually, via SMS or the LOGO! TDE, at which time of day the street
lights shall be switched on the day after.
The time value is written to function block Set time via variable address VW6
and further processed in the program.
Figure 3-1

A valid format for the time input is the hours as numerals 1-24 and the minutes as
numerals 0-59. If, for example, the user-defined time of day 11:30 h shall be set,
the value 1130 must be entered here via SMS, LOGO! display, or LOGO! TDE.
The correctness of the entered time value is verified in the LOGO! program by
means of analog function blocks (analog comparators, analog MUX, etc.).
If an invalid time format is entered (e.g. 2430), a warning message is output via
SMS, and locally on LOGO! display or LOGO! TDE, and the astro clock mode is
automatically activated.
As soon as a valid time format is inserted, the user-defined mode is automatically
activated again.

3 Mode of Operation
3.2 Function mechanism of the user-defined time of day input
Note

3.2

Please note that for the time of day value 00:00 h, the analog value 2400
must be entered. Entering the value 0000 as analog value prompts a warning
message stating that the time format is wrong.

Function mechanism of the user-defined time of day

input
The time base for setting the switch-on time for the street lights is implemented
with a weekly timer and a wiping relay.
The analog value written to the LOGO! program as time of day input is further
processed as pulse width parameter (TH) via the wiping relay.
For switch-on time 1130, for example, the calculated pulse duration (TH) is 690
minutes. Converting the 690 minutes yields 11 hours and 30 minutes.

Siemens AG 2015 All rights reserved

Figure 3-2

Each day at 00:00 h, the weekly timer sends a pulse for one minute. As soon as
the wiping relay detects this pulse at the Trg input, the pulse width (TH) is
counted down in minutes (690 minutes in this example).
After the pulse width (TH) of the wiping relay has elapsed, the street lights are
switched on.
Note

The pulse of the weekly timer for counting the pulse width is sent at 00:00 h
every day by the wiping relay. When entering a user-defined switch-on time as
an analog value, this value will be counted down as pulse width (TH) by the
wiping relay on the following day. The inserted switch-on time for the street lights
therefore applies to the following day.

Automatic street light control (astro clock mode)

When setting the astro clock mode for controlling the street lights,
street lighting is automatically switched off at sunrise and switched on at sunset.

3.4

Changeover between astro clock mode/ user-defined

mode:
Changing between user-defined and astro clock mode is possible at any time via
SMS and LOGO! TDE.

3.4.1

Mode change via LOGO! TDE

With LOGO! TDE, the mode is changed by pressing the F1 button.

3.4.2

Mode change via SMS

Changing the mode via SMS requires generating a trigger for the pulse relay
(function block B042):

Siemens AG 2015 All rights reserved

Figure 3-3

A random analog value is written to analog network input NAI2 via SMS (at least
value "1"). As soon as the analog value has been entered, the threshold trigger
(function block B007) switches to true and forwards the trigger to the current
pulse relay (function block B042).
Figure 3-4

If at a later point in time, the mode shall be changed again, another value must be
written to analog network input NAI2 to generate a new trigger.

4 Configuration and Settings

4.1 Configuring LOGO! CMR for sending/receiving SMS messages
To enable writing a new value to analog network input NAI2, it must first be reset.
Analog network input NAI2 is reset by analog MUX (function block B015) via output
AQ, to which the same address VW8 has been assigned by address network input
NAI2 via the parameter VM mapping table.
As soon as a new value is written to analog network input NAI2, output AQ is set to
0 after 2 seconds by the analog MUX (function B015). This resets the analog
network input NAI2 automatically back to 0.

4.3

Configuring time-of-day synchronization from LOGO!

CMR via NTP server
LOGO! CMR enables synchronizing the time of day using different methods (GPS,
GSM, NTP server) and forwarding it to LOGO! 8.
The correct UTC time is therefore always set in LOGO! which is very important in
applications where a timer, for example, is used.
In this application example it is ensured by the time-of-day synchronization that
street lighting is controlled at the right time of day via the astronomical clock.

Note

In the completed configuration file for LOGO! CMR, also offered in this
application example for download, the settings for the time-of-day
synchronization of LOGO! CMR via NTP server have already been made.
Further information, on how to load the completed configuration file into LOGO!
CMR is available in Chapter 5.3.2.
The NTP server used in this example is a free to use NTP server. Siemens
does not provide this service.
Alternatively, another NTP server can also be used.
If necessary, check the respective license terms of the NTP server for your
application purpose.

Contactor with auxiliary motor

For this application, it is recommended not to control the street lights directly via
the LOGO! outputs but by using a contactor with auxiliary contact. The contactor is
controlled by means of a LOGO! output. In this application example, LOGO! output
Q1 was used.
Further information on how the contactor must be wired and which setup guidelines
must be observed are available in the Device manual for SIRIUS contactors

installed on your PC and that you are familiar with the basic handling of this
software.

5.3

Commissioning

5.3.1

Assigning IP addresses and subnet masks to devices
