ST PETER & ST PAUL, HOLY APOSTLES

OF

CHRIST 29 JUNE

NOT FOR MATERIAL PROFIT

St Peter & St Paul

Holy Apostles of Christ our Lord
The Epistles of St Peter and St Paul are very different, because these two
great Holy Apostles of Christ our Lord had come from different
backgrounds.
St Peter had been a humble Fisherman, who was not highly educated but
was sincere and spontaneous or even impulsive at times.
He was very forthright in how he wrote which was uncomplicated and
truthful. There was always a specific Purpose to what he wrote.
St Paul was different. He was extremely intelligent and had been highly
educated, which is probably the reason for his writings being rather
complicated and often difficult to understand clearly.
However, there is always great physical and Spiritual Intentions concerning
his admonitions, cautionary words and Divinely Inspired True
Teachings.
Furthermore, his Epistles consist of profound, complex Theology that was
beyond St Peter and there was a Divine Purpose for this because he
had to deal with philosophysing, intelligent Nations, such as the Greeks.
St Peter was like a very wise Grandfather, who had the experience of many
years of life and who imparted his Wisdom and Teachings with Divine
Authority, and Experience.
This was how St Peter wrote, spoke and taught, which was similar to that of
St John the Beloved Apostle, Theologian and Evangelist.
The Epistles of St Peter concern moral admonitions based upon what God
has done for us - what Jesus Christ the Eternal, Only Begotten Word
and Son of God - has done for us.
St Peter generally gives us a moral admonition, reminding us of something
Wonderful, Gracious or Merciful that our Lord God has done for us,
before instructing us what we need to do in order to fulfil our own
Spiritual Commitments.
This is our Life in Christ our Christian Life!
The Epistles of these two great Holy Apostles of Christ more than any of the
other Holy Apostles Epistles or the writings of Holy Scripture have shaped
our Preaching, for this short lifespan is all about attaining Spiritual
Perfection Theosis or regaining our lost Likeness to Christ Who is
Perfect Man.
St Peter gets right to the point of his Teachings, while St Paul provides us
with the groundwork, which is vital for the prevention of heresy and
apostasy.
St Peter teaches us with the Divine Authority bestowed upon him by our
Lord, and his life experiences with Christ.
He begins his first Epistle after the salutation: Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who, according to His Abundant Mercy
had Begotten us again unto a Livelihood by the Resurrection of Christ
Jesus from the dead... ...wherein you greatly rejoiced, although now
for a season, if need be, are in heaviness through manifold
temptations. [1 PETER 1 : 3]
St Peter fully understood the difficulties that confronted his Holy Flock,
especially during periods of persecution.
The fallen, Spiritually Dead world continually persecutes the Christian Faith,
which will continue in varying degrees until the end of time.

ST PETER & ST PAUL, HOLY APOSTLES

OF

CHRIST 29 JUNE

Even if when there is no obvious persecution there are endless difficult

circumstances of daily living.
Nevertheless, we must always remember that God Loves us and that He has
granted us a lasting Hope for He NEVER fails to keep His Divine
Promises!
St Peter asks us to endure, no matter what difficulties confront us:
Receiving the end of your Faith - even the Salvation of your souls.
St Peter eagerly, freely and willingly Laboured as an Apostle of Christ
because of his intense Love for God.
Likewise, we, too, should do everything in this life for that same Holy
Reason.
In the final Resurrection Gospel (i.e. of the 11 Resurrection Gospels that are
read consecutively at each Sunday Matins) our Lord Jesus Christ
restores St Peter by asking him three times: Simon, son of Jonas, Lovest
thou Me?
Our Lord initially used the words Agapas Me? meaning that Divine,
unconditional Love which far exceeds our human love filo with
which St Peter replied.
Agape is the infinite Divine Love that God has for us and that we should
have for God as well as our neighbours.
Agape is the First and greatest Divine Commandment for only by
possessing such unconditional Love of God and our neighbours, will we
be able to exist in His Heavenly Kingdom of Agape Divine Love!
When our Lord asked St Peter using the term Agapas meaning: Do you
Love Me with this Divine, Perfect Love of God? St Peter responded by
saying something similar to ... I have great affection (filis) for Thee,
which is a lower, imperfect, human type of love, but not Perfect, Divine
Love.
The second and the third time, our Lord changed His word to filis.
Although St Peter was grieved that our Lord asked him three times whether
he loved Him, he still did not have courage enough to say that he Loved
God with a Love that God has for us.
Not understanding the subtlety of our Lords question, St Peter replied three
times I have affection for Thee.
At the end of St Peters Life in Christ, when he wrote his Epistles, if our Lord
had asked him this question again, he would emphatically proclaimed:
Yes! Lord, I Love Thee with the Love that Thou hast for me!
St Peter certainly did Lover our Lord Jesus Christ - not with mere affection
nor a great attachment, but with that Perfect, Divine and Absolute Love,
because by then he was Perfected by his Spiritual Experiences and all
his trials and tribulations.
Both these Holy Apostles teach us that there is another side to the difficult
circumstances we must endure with Patience, throughout the days of
this short life, for these Perfect our Faith and grant us Salvation of our
immortal soul.
At the the end of his life St Peter spoke with conviction. His Epistles are
permeated with his great Love for God.
St Johns writings are similar, for they are written with confidence with
Absolute Knowledge of Gods Love, that permeates both their writings.
St Peter wrote: ...Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, and be sober,
and hope to the end for the Grace that is to be brought unto you at the
Revelation of Jesus Christ. [1 Peter 1 :3]
St Peter tells us to prepare ourselves not to fight against anyone but to fight
the Good Fight of Faith the Spiritual Battle against the evil one - for as
our Lord said: ... the Kingdom of Heaven is won by violence... ...as
obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former
ST PETER & ST PAUL, HOLY APOSTLES

OF

C H R I S T 2 9 J U N E 3.

lusts in your ignorance: But as He Who has Called you is Holy, so be

Holy in all manner of conversation (conduct) [1 Peter 1: 12 & 14-15]
These words should resonate for all of us right now because there is
complete breakdown of morality in our society, and it is
happening even in the Church.
How easily people say what is politically correct and believe it with all their
heart, while Holy Scripture recoils against all those things that are in
total opposition to Christs Teachings and Commandments!
In our heart, we all know exactly what is good and what is wicked. We all
know what Christ has clearly taught us but it is our choice whether we
obey His Divine Truth and Teachings or rebel against them.
When we read the Epistles of St Peter and St Paul, we must try to understand
them and to apply their instructions and exhortations to our own lifestyle because they wrote from personal conviction personal Faith and
Knowledge of Divine Truth, as well as personal Experience, which we
also need for our own Spiritual Welfare and Progress.
If all Christians truly strived for and experienced Holiness, they would never
make such foolish and casual statements regarding moral issues and
values because they would understand and know all about Sanctity.
As Orthodox Christians Faithful Disciples of Christ we must fight
ceaselessly against the deceptive and dangerous immorality of this era,
by maintaining a moral Life in Christ humbly Obedient to our Lords
Teachings and Commandments and by living with absolute
conviction absolute Faith in God and His Divine Truth and Reality.
There is no sin that we commit that our All Loving and Merciful Lord will not
forgive (with the exception of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit!)
We must believe without any doubt that only the Things that Almighty God
grants us have meaning and absolute Truth.
We must do this if we are to be Saved, especially in this world now that
regards Righteousness as sin or even mental illness; and sin as
Righteousness.
From now on, when we read the Epistles of the Holy Apostles, let us pay
careful attention to their exhortations, encouragements, teachings and
warnings, for by applying these to our Spiritual Journey towards
Eternity, we will be able to proceed with confidence with absolute
Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and His Divine Truth.
