Abstract. Different groups of people with distinct educational and living backgraounds have different beliefs
and perception in terms of the nature and the level of security provided by the police corps. However, using
statistical methods such as X 2 and heterogeneity X2 it is possible to evaluate, discern and validat estatistically
their perception on the question at hand, and furthemore, establish the existence of different uniform
metagroups or clusters. With the objetive of determinig the perception of people in terms of their confidence
in the police coprs for the security provision, a sample of 690 persons of 12 different groups or walks of life
in the Metropolitan area of Monterrey, Mexico, was analyzed by means of X 2 and heterogeneity X2 ( 0.05)
models. The results indicated that: 1) 9 out of 12 groups investigated did not have confidence in the police
coprs while the remaining 3 groups were undecided in this respect, and 2) these 2 metagroups, indeed
establish 2 statistically ( 0.05) uniform clusters in terms of their perception in the police corps. It is
postulated that these statistical differences stem from the cultural backgrounds, eduation and economic needs
of the people investigated in this study.

Abstract. Fundamentals of sampling are described and explained. The essential requisites of scientific
sampling are detailed. The role of sampling in experimentaion is stressed. Sampling design is described
briefly and the role of data distribution in optimal sample size determination is highlighted. Cross section and
longitudinal samplings in the field of criminology are described and examples for each sampling scheme are
provided.

Abstract. Statistical features of the nested analysis of variance (nested ANOVA) are described. The critical
assumptions, the application and the specific types of objetives and hypothesis for this model are noted and
discussed. The use of the nested ANOVA in the field of criminological is described and explained exmplifying
the mean efficacy comparisson among different judges in several districts.
