When the going gets tough

...We pray! At least thats what were conditioned to do. I remember when
we were in school, my mother made my sister and I light a diya before every
exam. Wed eagerly wait for the bhog every Thursday, so the rest of the week
would go well. A lot of my friends in college fasted for 21 Mondays so theyd
marry well. Its not my place to comment on the worthiness of these actions.
In fact, as superstitions go, Im pretty whimsical myself. Im also a believer
not religious, mind you, but I do believe. I have faith in, well, faith.
Its faith that makes me hold on; go on. Its faith that finds the solution
really, Im the one who does, but my faith makes me. I hold it dear. It makes
me see the signs. It makes the hope float. At the end of the day, thats what
really counts. The hope. When the sun goes down and night comes, I take
joy in it because I know its going to bring me my tomorrow. And tomorrow
is hope.

I like speaking a philosophical parlance with you, once in a while, because

it keeps things in perspective. It makes me appreciate the things I have, the
person I have become, the people I have come to love, the home I have built
around me.
I also hope to rub off some of the faith on you. So you may keep it too.

CELEBRATING CHILDREN

SMALL, BIG IDEAS!

I am not a regular subscriber of GoodHomes but, this months

issue really caught my eye. Its so different from all the other
magazines I have been buying lately to help me do up my home.
In fact, I was delighted with this months Childrens special,
which was really apt and insightful. The April edition came out
in perfect time as I have recently purchased a new apartment
in Mumbai and was planning on doing up my sons room. But, I
simply had no idea where to buy knickknacks for his room from.
GoodHomes, however, had every imaginable solution and was
full of ideas for this. And now, that the room is completely done
up, I have to say that with all the tiny furniture, toys , games,
books and posters, the space looks so good and adorable. He is so
happy and excited with his bright new room, especially with his
new cat table with cat and giraffe chairs where he can sit all day
to draw and colour. This makes me really happy. So thank you
GoodHomes for making this happen, it was worth it!
Sunita Makhija, New Delhi
Thats wonderful news, Sunita. I do hope you will now try out our
subscription. Do keep writing in with your feedback.

Impressed by your April issue, I was eagerly awaiting your May

issue especially since it was going to be a childrens special. Firstly
I must admit for the past few issues, I have been extremely happy
with the magazine and the way it has been experimenting with
different styles. Not that the magazine ever had me disappointed.
But the change and the whole experimental flavour in the
magazine is so refreshing and I love it.
So this month, with all my excitement, I picked up the copy
and was absolutely excited with the cover itself. It has to be the
best childrens special cover there is. It was quirky, fun and just
the sort to get your child to love his or her space. Extremely
captivating and interesting. Even before I could flip through the
magazine, I had already guessed that it was going to be about all
things cute and creative.
Like always, this time around too, it just raised my expectations
even higher. The entire magazine was so well presented and not
even for a while I got distracted when going through it. I never
would have imagined such creative little things to experiment
with for a little ones room. In Pursuit of Happiness presented
a complete package for a fun-filled makeover project. The idea
of getting ones child involved sounded like the best summer
vacation activity, especially if one isnt heading out for the
Summer hols. The idea was superbly executed on paper and very
innovative as well. My niece and nephew have already geared up,
and have started creating some fun things for their rooms. You
are the only magazine that covers such interesting and unusual
topics. Fantastic job guys, I am looking forward to the next issue,
and wonder whats in store next.
Jeenal Chhabra, Mumbai
Thank you, Jeenal, for writing to us. I am delighted and so glad
for this detailed feedback you have given on our magazine. We
hope to live up to your expectations in the future. It feels great
to hear that our efforts to keep your decor style up to date and

As far as wall colours go, opt for

blues or neutrals for a calming
effect or yellows and reds for energy.
Dont forget to add a mirror at the
entrance for last-minute checks.

With foyers, its all about that banging first impression that you need
to make, since it is what your guests will see right away. As far as
decor is concerned, it is also an area of limitless possibilities. For a
high-traffic entryway, it makes sense to include furniture that has
plenty of organisational solutions built in. Add a bit of interest to the
design by bringing in a mix of your best accessories, such as a special
family memorabilia or favourite paintings. If its compact, make an
impact: A slim and sleek shelf topped with a gallery wall of precious
photos. A vignette never goes astray on a side table.

PHOTOGRAPH DMITRY PISTROV /123RF

Lets admit it, we live in our kitchens. It is more than just a space for
eating and cooking. In fact, most of the all the action in the home
takes place right here. For a quick revamp, consider an open and
clean shelving design for your kitchen Shelving in place of upper
cabinets makes the room look lighter and airier. Also, a blend of
hidden and open storage will ensure everythings at hand and easily
available. Ceiling tiles, which imitate the antique look, or laminate
like surfaces which fit the colour scheme you have in mind, work very
well as an instant transformation idea.

THE TRICK WITH COLOUR

Colour is the key to establishing

a sense of harmony in your
living room. Theres a lot going
on in this living room, but the
preponderance of white keeps
all the different elements from
becoming too overwhelming.

KEEP IT FUSS-FREE

A living room makeover project is tonnes of fun. For a pocket-friendly

revamp, we recommend small changes, like mixing old and new
pieces to add energy to the room. Balance heavier pieces with lighter
ones to keep the space from feeling too clunky. The lighter pieces in
this room the coffee and side tables provide a nice counterpoint
to the sofa and dresser. Paired chairs dont have to match try
mixing two pieces from a similar era with different shapes.

TOUCH-FEEL

Texture is crucial. Ensure that

every surface is pleasing to

furnishings and finishes.

There are some things in life that never go out of style and
GoodHomes is a classic in every sense of the word. It is, in
my opinion, of the best design magazines in India, and
I proudly display it in my library. I am a house-proud graphic
designer and love changing the look-and-feel of my abode with
the changing seasons. So, whether its the lounge area, a cosy
reading corner, terrace gardens or even something interesting
for childrens spaces, I admire how the magazine each time,
comes up with ideas that really work and look stunning. And
speaking of childrens spaces, I am waiting in eager anticipation
for the May edition. I know I will be surprised and with the
small makeover Im planning for my toddlers space, I know the
childrens special will leave me with ideas galore.

...and the award for Product Design: Accessories went to

Alex Daviss Indi Store for its impressive range of outdoorgrade stainless steel designs

Feature MEENAKSHI SHANKAR

Our wall art project came to life under the

keen eye of Bengaluru-based artist Nilofer
Suleman for GoodHomes for Art. Over two
weekends, the plain wall of Defence Colony
Park was carefully nurtured to life by the
expert brushstrokes wielded by children with
a keen artistic leaning.
An initiative mentored by Nilofer and
spearheaded by Namrata Mundhra, 70-plus
children between the ages of six years and
16 years, inspired by American pop artist
Keith Haring, created visual poetry in the
community space.
The carnival-like atmosphere was
infectious and the pure joy that came forth

from each child who participated was a sight

to behold. Over tall glasses of lemonade,
sandwiches and mats spread with pots of
paint, parents and children came together to
bring the 100ft wall alive with myriad colours,
to thread a beautiful and colourful story
around the theme of sports.
When we caught up with Nilofer,
she said, We wanted to give back to
the community. The park is a football
ground and the canvas we created with
the children was a celebration of the sport.
Inspired by erstwhile American pop artist,
Keith Haring, this wall is our second
canvas in the city-scape.

Feature MEENAKSHI SHANKAR

Our wall art project came to life under the

keen eye of Bengaluru-based artist Nilofer
Suleman for GoodHomes for Art. Over two
weekends, the plain wall of Defence Colony
Park was carefully nurtured to life by the
expert brushstrokes wielded by children with
a keen artistic leaning.
An initiative mentored by Nilofer and
spearheaded by Namrata Mundhra, 70-plus
children between the ages of six years and
16 years, inspired by American pop artist
Keith Haring, created visual poetry in the
community space.
The carnival-like atmosphere was
infectious and the pure joy that came forth

from each child who participated was a sight

to behold. Over tall glasses of lemonade,
sandwiches and mats spread with pots of
paint, parents and children came together to
bring the 100ft wall alive with myriad colours,
to thread a beautiful and colourful story
around the theme of sports.
When we caught up with Nilofer,
she said, We wanted to give back to
the community. The park is a football
ground and the canvas we created with
the children was a celebration of the sport.
Inspired by erstwhile American pop artist,
Keith Haring, this wall is our second
canvas in the city-scape.

PLANNING

XGet it right: Your first task is

to find someone with relevant
expertise, a pool builder,
if you please! Remember:
Its important to check the
credentials of the contractor to
ensure the job is done well.
XShape it up: Oval, round,
square, rectangular aim
for a pool that is practical
for grown-ups as well as
children. Also, check depth
before deciding shape and
size. Create a checklist and do
your homework well. You can
also plan comfortable seating
options around the pool for a
relaxing ambience.
XChoice of materials: Pick
from concrete, fibreglass or
vinyl. Advantage with concrete
pools is that it can be moulded
into any shape whereas
fibreglass and vinyl contribute
with hassle-free installation.
XMoneywise: The budget
you keep aside for the pool
should include factors like
landscaping, plumbing and
electrical works. Also, whether
you are planning to build a
pool outdoors or indoors will
dictate how much you spend.
Keep in mind that your cost
factor will revolve around
elements like depth in square
feet, shape, size and material

FILTRATION & MAINTENANCE

needs to be working at all the

times. There are drains at the
bottom of the deepest end
of the pool that suck in water
continuously and send it to the
filtration system. There are also
drains at the top edges that
suck the surface water (where
lighter debris floats) and send it
to the filtration system.
XMost filters in apartment
complexes are high-rate sand
filters, which are large tanks
containing a thick bed of
special grade sand. The water
first goes through a strainer
that filters larger debris like dry
leaves, and then goes through
this sand filter where finer dirt
particles are caught. Water is
then fed back into the pool.
XTo dislodge and clean fine
dust settled on the pool floor, a
pool vacuum cleaner is used.
In that, it can be pointed to
the specific dirt-laden areas to
suck the water in and send it
to the filtration system. Pool
vacuuming needs to be done
at least once a week.
XTo get rid of bacteria and
other pathogens that breed
in water, the pool is treated
with chlorine the pool

disinfectant. Chlorine in its

granular for liquid form is
added at the juncture when
filtered water enters the
pool. Chlorine in water forms
hypochlorous acid which kills
bacteria and other pathogens.

MAINTENANCE TIPS
XChemicals are used to
maintain the pH balance of the
pool water. Time and effort
applied during the planning
and commissioning stage
pays real dividends in terms of
long-term enjoyment of your
swimming pool.
XAlternative purification
methods such as the use of
ozonators ensure that modern
pools can be safely sanitised
with fewer harsh chemicals.

In India, pool cleaning

is mainly done
manually when the
pool is not in use.
Sweeping of floors and
walls using suction
sweeper and brushing
of tiles is fairly
effective.

EXPERT SPEAK

I need help with my kitchen design.

Could you give me suggestions for
colours and schemes for this area? Also
please do suggest finishes for the cabinetry,
flooring and placement ideas for the sink,
gas, stove and fridge.
SACHIN, VIA E-MAIL

Thank you Sachin for your question.

The kitchen is like the heart of the
home, feeding all its inmates and ensuring
the wellbeing and well-fed-ness of all who
live there. Statistically people with limited
staff spend much time in the kitchen
and even those that dont like to have a
sparkling bright and cheerful-looking
kitchen space.
THE COLOURS: Ive always said that too
many bright colours could lead to a very
busy and optically smaller kitchen. The
trick is to create the look of colour and

30 GOODHOMES JUNE 2015

cheer without a busy cramped look.

Start with sunshine yellow on the tile
dado and backsplash at the platform and
take it from there. Keep the rest of the
colours resonant with this one theme and
play with mint, sage, lime, lemon and
marry the tones and colours seamlessly.
For the flooring, I suggest you go with
yellow tiles in a muted colour, which
would contrast quite dramatically with
sage or mint on the cabinetry shutters. Id
also suggest that you keep some of your
enamelware and crockery
in a matchy-match
colour scheme. Yellow
also looks chic with
steel grey the
grey allows the
yellow to pop
and giving a cool

DEBENHAMS

panache to the kitchen.

A red and white kitchen has an equable
feel when you downplay the red and
use it sparingly. A red backsplash with
white-high-gloss shutters and cedar wood
flooring gives the kitchen a fashionably
cheerful feel.
Like the bright sun in a clear blue sky,
a flash of yellow on a wall is all you need
to wake up the space, or accents of red.
Or then accents of lime and cobalt blue?
You could contrast daubs of high-intensity
saturated colour with liberal
amounts of white or pastel
mauve. Go for a main
colour that means
something special
to you and your
family and then
work around it

for contrasts or tonal shades that go well

with that main colour.
THE LOOK: For wall finishes, I highly
recommend a semi or high gloss in order to
enable you to wipe off any dirt or cooking
stains. The back-splash, when clad in
tile or granite, adds protection as leaving
it bare or painted makes it vulnerable to
possible oil hits. The decoration and visual
appeal of many kitchens suffer because
of the natural side-effects of cooking.
Ventilation over the cooktop is a must,
so a chimney or vent, a hood or a window
near the cooktop is essential. With a
super-efficient ventilation and extraction
system that eliminates grease, buildup and condensation, you have more
decorative scope. Plenty of light and air
also add to the maintenance and
efficiency of this space.

rod in front of the existing one, and using an
ash rose organza or maybe indigo voile.
Some bright-coloured ribbons around
curtains instead of the now much-used
metal clasps to hold them back are
inexpensive and add to that celebratory
festive feel.

WALLS

Look at this as the

backdrop to your life
at home when you
change the way you
look at walls, your
walls will automatically
change the way your
home looks.

CASES IN
POINT: COLOUR,
TEXTURE,
DESIGN AND
MOTIF
1 COLOUR
Who said you shouldnt play with
colour on your walls? And I dont
just mean a single combination. If
you like colour around you, there are
ways to make it work. You can either
take help from the experts at your
neighbourhood colour store, or then
experiment with a palette of your
choice, on your own.

2 TEXTURE
Textured walls add effect. So, if you
want to enhance a certain dimension
or scheme, go with an appropriate
textured finish for the walls in that
area. In fact, I suggest you check out
the options in leather (clad) wall tiles.

3 DESIGN
Wallpapers are the first thing that
come to mind when you think of
design for walls. You could even try
a combination of paint and paper for
an unusual scheme.

Paint a small patch of wall with

a sample colour and see it at different
times of the day, in different lighting
before making your choice.

4 MOTIF
This one would be the easiest way to
add interest to otherwise flat walls.
You can either use wall decals or then
pick up stencils to bring in quirk.

One of the few things that I have never taken a chance with
in interiors is flooring. Its too spread out an area and too
cumbersome a process for re-dos. So do whatever you have to,
to get it right in the first shot.

FLOORING

To bring that spring back into the

way your home steps up,
your flooring needs to pack a
stunning punch. My advice:
Try something unusual.

CASES IN POINT: COLOUR,

TEXTURE AND PATTERN
1 COLOUR
Most of us choose not to
experiment with colour
on our floors. Blame it on
our conditioning until
very recently, we thought
Italian marble was the
cats whiskers in flooring.
However, Id prefer to look
farther away from the usual
options. If you like stone,
you can pick a tinted granite,
a yellow Jaisalmer slab or
even shaded rustic kota or
kadappa stone.

2 TEXTURE
As much as I like trying out
new things, I wouldnt really
play with too much texture
on the floor. Considering
the high wear-and-tear
quotient, any kind of texture
will attract and retain dirt. I
would, however, bear in mind
the area and look at anti-skid
options. Another quirky area
for trying out texture with
your flooring is the dado
(skirting). For added effect,
opt for a contrasting colour.

3 PATTERN
Like Ive said before, the
options are many, you should
be open to experimenting.
Heavily patterned, vintagelooking floor tiles are making
a smart re-entry into homes.
Within this genre itself, there
are a lot of combinations
that you can play with. You
can even create your own
pattern on the floor with a
combination of stone and
mosaic its also a great way
to bring in a dash of colour.

they do with it makes

CASES IN POINT:
COLOUR, PRINT
AND TEXTURE
Fabric is perhaps the easiest way to
bring about a change in the overall
scheme of things. Theres a vast
range of choice. I like to work with
slip covers for my seating it gives
me the freedom to change the look
around without creating a dent in
my wallet. Add to that, a rug here, a
panel there, and voil! Ive refreshed
my living area for the season.

1 COLOUR
Solids arent something Id take too
much stress over, when it comes
to upholstery and soft furnishings.
If you want to go for a solid colour
somewhere in your living space,
leave that choice for the end, once
youve got your prints and patterns
in place. You could then pick out the
contrasting or complementing solid
colours from them.

PRINT AND
2 TEXTURE
There are no hard and fast rules
when it comes to working with prints.
Just remember, if it works for you, it
works, period. One of the few things
you can play with, in terms of prints,
is layering. Keep an eye on the scale
and layer your scheme from the
largest print in the background to the
smallest in the foreground.

HUSNA RAHAMAN
She is a multi award-winning
designer. Having studied at Parsons
School of Design in New York and
travelled the world extensively,
she knows that the moment of pure
detached creativity is her drug of
choice. Husna says she is a creator,
a procreator, nurturing her projects
and creating spatial poetry, which
redefines motion, emotion and
ideation. Her studio is a laboratory,
wherein design is a magical process,
so no day or project is ever the same.

74 GOODHOMES JUNE 2015

The design here was

curated around a
culturally-inspired canvas,
connecting the owners to
their roots, quite literal.
The couple have used art to infuse sudden
pops of colour within the neutral scheme.
The dining area, for instance, makes for a
captivating corner.

JUNE 2015 GOODHOMES 75

A series of vertical planes

generate a strong rhythmic
geometry. They are perforated to
reduce a sense of heaviness, as
well as to allow the easy passage
of light into the interiors. The
flow of the greenish-grey walls
is punctured with multiple
windows; those eaves are treated
as design elements.
The fishing boats (left) were brought in from
Karwar. They hold pride of place in the Shah
residence today.

heres a sense of joie de

vivre when youre inside the
Shah residence. The space
makes you smile. We find
out why. Owners, Kalpa
and Sanjay Shah had a very simple brief
for their designer, Husna Rahaman. They
desired a contemporary residence, but
one that also included subtle touches of
tradition. And true to its brief, the home
offers an element of surprise in every
corner. Imposing and tall curved walls on
one side; a series of articulated eaves on
windows for another; radial protruding fins
on yet anotherthe list is endless.
Husna adds, The multitude of curved
windows that perforate the curved and
straight sides, facing the East and West,
allow for a remarkable play of light and
shadow in the indoor areas, besides
rendering sight lines through the home to
its landscape setting.
Walking me through every element in
this sprawling home, the award-winning
designer says, The fishing boats, brought
specially from Karwar, were needed to
exemplify that the journey can also be of
essence, as a build-up to the destination.
As for the banyan trees roots in the formal
living room, I wanted to give the Shahs
some space that was culturally inspired
and so these roots were suspended from
the ceiling down, a pair of swings added,
and the area around was then lowered to
allow more definition. The stone-clad
seats are incidental and this area has an
76 GOODHOMES JUNE 2015

informal identity, offering people a chance

to sit around and converse easily.
The master bedroom borrows from
most spaces around and that makes it
the space versus a space. This room is a
great asset to the Shahs as it gives them
a view to the kids room, the kitchen and
the living areas. The guest room is as
rustic as possible. A curved wall to the
side encloses the bath spaces and is clad
in leftover wood strips from the interior
works. The headboard and the foot blocks
are made of locally-available, unpolished
sadarahalli granite. The expansive view of
the landscape adds to the overall charm.
In flooring, black Italian marble with
a white grain, coupled with its high-gloss
reflective quality, lends an almost surreal
effect. The ceiling is a maze of dropped
squares and rectangles, highlighted and
shadowed by sunlight streaming in all day.
And finally, the well-curated
accessories are like the cherry on the
cake. The home assumes magnified
appeal, especially in the evenings with the
assorted choice of striking light designs.

The Mughal Gardens, surrounding

the Rashtrapati Bhavan,are a
group of gardens, the design of
which, borrows heavily from the
Persian architectural style. The
lush and verdant outdoor area
stretches to over a whopping
15 acres and boasts of British
garden art and Mughal-style
canals and terraces at different
levels. Indigenous trees and
shrubs, fountains, water channels
and ponds are incorporated in the
design as embellishments for that
invigorating wave of freshness.

he Rashtrapati Bhavan in the Capital,

the presidential residence of the
largest democracy in the world, is the
last word in splendour. In fact, very
few official residential premises of the
Heads of State in the world will come close to the
vastness and grandeur of this building. Whats
more, the surrounding outdoors and exquisitelylandscaped gardens, befittingly named the Mughal
Gardens, complement the architecture of this
historical monument.
There is a sense of symmetry and organisation
in the overall layout and all the plants have been
methodically arranged. And the roses, theyre
everywhere! In fact, the Mughal Gardens boast
of over a 120 celebrated varieties of roses that are
mainly known to bloom in February-March. We
also had the opportunity to see a few unusual
varieties, namely the Green Rose and Angelique.
The Oklahoma, often referred to as the Black Rose
had us thrilled and completely spellbound. We also
found roses named after a number of important
national and international, political and historical
figures. Interesting, right?
This year we learn, the tulip and cyclamen,
recognised widely for their vibrant colours, served as
key attractions in the garden. A staggering 10,000
tulips bloomed early this year, much to the delight of
the Bhavans residents.
Another interesting area, we find, is the Circular
Garden, which has been embellished with fragrant
and colourful blooms like phlox, marigold, stock,
viola and pansies. A bubble fountain at the centre of
this garden enhances the visual appeal of the place.
The gardens are undoubtedly exhaustive in their
detailing. The serenity is all pervasive with a musical
fountain that bubbles to the tune of the shehnai and
Vande Mataram. Interestingly, 12 fountains have
been designed to create identical water patterns
in sync with light and sound. And finally, the
Biodiversity Park that is home to peacocks, deer,
ducks, turkeys, guinea fowls, turtles, parakeets,
rabbits and migratory birds, is a mystical space youd
never want to leave! What can we say, we came away
with our chests swollen with pride.
