Detailed Course description of the assigned subjects for the program of Bachelor of
Architectural Engineering at University of Aleppo as per academic year and semester.
FIRST YEAR
FIRST SEMESTER
1- Basics of Architecture design & Geometrical Drawing (1):
- Number of hours (weekly) 10 practical hours
- Weighting scoring system: 50 % (sessional work) 2 projects, 25 % 2 interim exams, 25 % final
exam (class covers 2 semesters)
- Course description:
The course aims to provide the basic understanding of the of architecture design fundamentals
and graphic expression tools & techniques in 2D & 3D environment.
Introduction to basic geometrical elements like point, line, plane, solid and void etc.
Graphical expression for 2D environments elements such as: plan, section, elevation.
orthographic projection of design elements to create 3D objects using: one point & 2 points
perspective, axonometric & isometric views
Process of architectural drawings including site layout, plan, section & elevation, details
Introduction to drafting systems (scale, dimensions, codes and symbols, lines, etc.)
Understanding Design principles like Balance, Rhythm, Harmony, Contrast, Symmetry, Scale,
Proportions etc. leading to unity & creativity in design.
Understanding the relationships between architectural spaces, forms & order in terms of function,
beauty & durability.
The importance climatology consideration of the site location, the orientation, materials, etc.
Sessional works include 4 interim exams, plus 4 projects (2 each semester), introduction the
elements of the habitat (Arabic House).
2- Free-hand drawing & Model making (1):

- Number of the weekly actual hours: 4 (practical)
- Weighting scoring system: 50 % sessional work, 50 % final exam.
The course aims to introduce the student to visual arts to understand the principles of design in
abstract.
Techniques of Arts Drawing architecture sculpture painting - models Industrial art.
Sessional work including sketch drawing every class plus assignment with (pencil, charcoal, ink,
china ink and coloring & model making as well).
3- Mathematics, Mechanics and Statics (1):

- Number of weekly actual hours: 2 (theoretical), 2 (practical)
- Weighting scoring system: 20 % interim exam, assignment, 80 % final exam.

Series, number (e), derivative differential applications, definite increments, entire series, definite
and the indefinite integrals, doubled integration, Tri-integration.
Essential notions in deferential equations of the second degree having different forms.
Applications of the differential equations in the solution of some moving problems, the analytic in
the space.
4- Descriptive geometry:
Definition, vertical projection on two perpendicular surfaces (Mauge Method)

Changing of the level, rotation, application, Polly faces, shades, inclined surfaces, lines, planar
geometric projections.

Remedial Grammar skills: main verb form & tenses, negative question and answers, modal verbs,
the passive, passives, modal verbs, nouns & articles, reported speech.
Usage of the oral skills to functional communication with all aspects of daily life through
dialogues.
Improving Listening comprehension, understanding listening process, the barriers, via authentic
materials and exercise on architectural engineering topics.

3- Mathematics, Mechanics and Statics (2):

The fundamental study of the mechanical geometry, the definition of the kinds of vectors (their
sum and their tension), the equilibrium of point and solid bodies, (smooth surfaces, and rough
surfaces) the necessary directive quantities in the mechanics.
4- Perspective and Shade (1):

The course aims to understand the isometric & perspective view and Sociography.
Basic skill of presentation & rendering techniques & rendering by understanding the Scale, 2D3D objects relationship
Understanding object angles and views
Projection theories, Orthographic projection: Projection of straight lines-traces, true length,
planes, solids.
One and two point perspectives of interior and exterior views, isometric and oblique three
dimensional views, conical projections,
Sociography principles of two-dimensional objects in plan and elevation. Sociography of three

Brief explanation of temporary works: excavation, shoring, underpinning, scaffolding
Substructure works: trenches. types of Foundation (Simple split, steeped, combined and
cantilevered footing, RCC footing and raft foundation etc.) types of soils and bearing capacity,
waterproofing types & technology.
Super structure works types of slabs. types of roofs, types of R.C.C frame, scaffolding systems.
Concrete technology, design mix, formwork types & technology for simple & complex structure.
7- Arabic language (1):

Improvement of the Arabic language skills and analytical report writing in Arabic
SECOND YEAR
FIRST SEMESTER
1- Architectural Design Studio (1):

Understanding design methodology processes & operations including: data collection, site
analysis, climate & environment consideration, space program & end-user requirements, area
analysis, bubble diagram, design matrix, evolution of plan, relationship between plan & exterior
form & elevations, application of design theme and unity, application of design by-laws.
Application of the graphical skills and 3-dimensional presentation techniques to express the
totality of design concept.
Sessional works includes 4 interim exams and 4 projects on actual sites (2 each semester),
suggested building types are villa (old Arabic style, Modern style), dispensary, small
administrational center, workshop, Gymnasium, students hostel, motel,etc.
Viva-voce by examiner at the end of each project

Architectural rendering of the facades and perspective,

Study of shadow of 2D and 3D objects with different angles (shadow of line, circle, plain, cubic,
sphere, etc.) in sunlight and artificial light.
5- History of Architecture (2):

The Hellenic architecture and Greek art, the Roman architecture, the Christian architecture in
Syria, the Etrusque architecture, the urban planning in Classical Eras.
6- Building Construction (2):

Masonry Works (walls types and construction technology): cavity panel walls, solid load bearing,
light weight concrete blocks, glass block, Precast panel walls

Sessional work including practical training to use the surveying equipment namely levels,
compass, theodolites, total stations, tachometer, and other instruments.
5- Resistance of Materials:
- Weighting scoring system: 20 % interim exam, Assignment, 80 % final exam.
Power static, the structure beams, (calculation of the reaction) in the assigned structures. The
internal powers in the structures (cutting powers), the forces definition-low of elasticity- the
distribution of forces in the section influenced by the (axial forces) bounding moment, the cutting
force, the tensional moment.

(shafts, tanks, central heater, electric rooms, generator, A/C ducting, )
assigning appropriate structure system as part of architectural form design (concrete, steel, space
frame) innovative structure solutions based on architecture concepts.
Sessional works includes 4 interim exams and 4 projects on actual sits (2 each semester),
suggested building types are school, recreation center, clinic, office building, library, bank etc.
2- Working Design Studio (1):

for various types of buildings

3- Structural Analysis (1):

- Number of weekly actual hours: 2(theoretical), 2 (practical)
Simple Beams, Fixed beams with concentrated load and uniformly distributed load (over
complete span, Categliante theory (Maxwell low), loads theory.
Continuous beams (without settlement) with uniform sections by three moments. Only vertical
load and uniformly distributed load over whole span by theorem of three moments.
4- Theories of Architecture (2):

Foundational theoretical knowledge about Design principles of different types of buildings

including Housing, hospitals, touristic, recreation centers, transportations, Educational,
Commercial and Administrational buildings.
Islamic architecture rules and principles
Contemporary architecture types including: functionalism, organism, cubism, Bauhaus and
international style, Post-modern & deconstruction.
5- Theories & Methods of Construction:

Performance analysis and formal characteristics of building materials.

Comparison of Structure systems (bearing walls, skeleton, box frame, space frame, special

Islamic Arab architecture, Islamic urban planning, Roman architecture in Europe, Gothic
architecture, architecture in the Renaissance period, the architectural influences of Arab on the
Modern European Architecture.
5- Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning:

Definition of basic terms used in air-conditioning system and plants

Air-conditioning and Air-cooling principles & calculations (air-chiller, DX-system, Split System),
the implications on Architectural Forms and details.
Systems & methods and Equipment of Air conditioning
Hot water systems, central heating equipment, boilers systems & calculations.
6- Electrical Installation:
Light: unit of measure, light production and luminous sources, illumination of dwelling places,
business centers, offices, hospitals, factories, gardens, statues and pools, streets, and important
buildings facades.
Sound: Noise definition, protection against noise, sound insulation, measurement of the
insulation, theories of sound conditioning, application of the theories on sound conditioning.
Direct current circuits, alternative current cyclone. Tri phase cycles, voltage degree in cables, the
electrical and technical installation in the buildings.

4- Computer Aided Design

Principals of computer aided design 2D & 3D

5- Reinforced concrete (1):

Mechanical specifications of concrete, steel used in reinforcing concrete, permitted stresses in

concrete and steel, combination of steel and concrete, supposition and principles considered in
study of reinforced concrete,
Concrete design: Rules of thumb, rules for beams, columns, slab for fixing & sectional properties.
Understanding types of joints in steel structures, riveted, welded and bolted joints, types of steel
section and their properties.
Design for Flexure: Introduction, assumption, flexure design of singly reinforced & doubly
reinforced and T- beams by Limit State Methods. IS-Coded provisions, Numerical Problems.
Design for Shear, Bond: Shear failure of beams. Shear reinforcement, Curtailment of
reinforcement and Bond, Anchorage and Development length, IS-Code provisions, Design of a
beam with flexural and shear consideration. Reinforcement Detailing, Numerical Problems.

6- Reinforced concrete (2):

Design of Compression Members: Short and Long Columns, IS-Code Provisions, Design of Short
Columns under Axial compression, Design of Columns under bi-axial bending, use of interaction
diagram for design. Lateral ties. Reinforcement Detailing, Numerical Problems.
Design of Slabs & Stairs: Effective span, rectangular slabs, one way and two way slabs, ribbed
slabs, mushroom slabs. Design of Slabs with various boundary conditions by IS-Code methods.

Improvement of the Arabic language and analytical report writing in Arabic
8- Practical Training:
The practical training is a compulsory requirement, where the student should attend at least 120
Hour of training either at a governmental body or a private sector consultant firm, including
office training on design, and site supervision on an ongoing construction works
Full detailed report and authorized certificate of attendance should be submitted for a Viva-Voce
where the student interviewed and questioned accordingly.
THE FIFTH YEAR

FIRST SEMESTER
- Weighting scoring system: 50 % (sessional work) 2 projects, 25 %, 2 interim exams, 25 % final
exam.

Application of local municipal regulations.
Application of climate data, passive solar system to enhance building performance.
Exposure to post occupancy evaluation and end user satisfaction.
Sessional works includes 4 interim exams and 4 projects on actual sites (2 each semester),
suggested building types are airport, university campus, residential complex, towers, etc.

Climate and weather, atmosphere, seasonal rotation, solar radiation, sun path diagram, Macro to
Micro climate, Mediterranean climate characteristic
Urban planning & EnvironmentOrientation of streets, blocks. Sustainable Planning and Policies,
Creation of Habitable Environment, Impact on built and un-built spaces.
Conservation of Water, Land, Energy its methods. solid & Liquid Waste from Buildings,
treatment of waste degradation of environment
Environmental building design: passive and active methods, Selection of building materials and
orientation, Design of windows and shading devices. Heat flow. cavity walls, cross ventilations,
stack effect, Green buildings
4- Project management, Quantities & specifications:

Introduction to Project management, project life cycle & process, project processes, organization
chart, roles & responsibilities.
Project selection and evaluation process, mathematical methods & economic comparative
methods.
Project scheduling, activities relationships, PERT & CPM methods, numerical problems,
resources optimizing & levelling, reviewing, updating and monitoring.
Project documents, conditions of contract, tendering procedures (Syrian system), general
requirement.
Introduction to Specification, Method of drafting specification, CSI, Syrian reference handbook
MIF, numbering system, international & local standard, reference to contract document.
Explanation about Specs chapters including standards, products, manufacturers & execution for
(site work, concrete, masonry, metal, wood, thermal & moisture protection, doors & windows,
finishes, equipment, specialties, furnishing).
Quantity Surveying, definition and importance, contractual side, calculation methods for QS
Types of Estimates (order of magnitude, budget, definite), contingencies, Current rates in Syria
5- Real estate legislations and Urban Regulations:

Basic principle of real-estate regulations, definition of the real-estate laws and its sub divisions in
Syria, types of land property in Syria and property rights (Amiri, private, public), cooperative

society neighborhoods planning, collusion agreement dependence, (register of real estate

properties).
Basic principles of real-estate feasibility study, calculation of income, calculation of returns, ROI,
IRR, discount rate.
6- Foreign language (5).

The course will run as a seminar with an interactive approach. Getting the students effective
contribution to group discussions, simulations and case studies.
Methods of academic verbal communication such as seminars, conferences, convention, congress,
debates, panel discussions, extempore speeches etc.
Presenting simple, complex, architectural concepts and proposal with the help of text, drawings,
transparencies, slides, video, photographs, models etc.
7- Arabic Language (5).

SECOND SEMESTER
1- Diploma Project/ Graduation project:
- Number of weekly actual hours:18 (practical)
The project should encompass the totality of the academic study in all years, to deal with an
actual architecture problem or society need based on city or country plans.
The project is composed of following stages: data collection, schematic design, pre-final design,
final design, and final presentation. The student work is to be followed by tutor of 3 doctors.
An approval is conducted at the beginning for the selected topic, and then an intermediate review
after schematic design, final presentation is done in the presence of 7 doctors with at least 2
external examiners.
The presentation of Final design should have the following:
a. Architecture proposal (presented in a sufficient number of sheets to explain the design)
b. Construction details/working drawings
c. Urban planning approach in terms of site planning and surrounding zone.
c. appropriate service details for HVAC, firefighting, drainage & water supply, electric light &
power, installation systems.
d. exterior & interior rendered Perspectives shots and Model(s) to explain the design

The student should submit a detailed report containing analysis of the existing problem and the
approach of the design solution with necessary drawings, measurements records, log sheets,
observations, surveying data.
