Detailed Course description of the assigned subjects for the program of Bachelor of
Architectural Engineering at University of Aleppo as per academic year and semester.

FIRST YEAR
FIRST SEMESTER
1- Basics of Architecture design & Geometrical Drawing (1):
- Number of hours (weekly) 10 practical hours
- Weighting scoring system: 50 % (sessional work) 2 projects, 25 % 2 interim exams, 25 % final
exam (class covers 2 semesters)
- Course description:

The course aims to provide the basic understanding of the of architecture design fundamentals
and graphic expression tools & techniques in 2D & 3D environment.
Introduction to basic geometrical elements like point, line, plane, solid and void etc.
Graphical expression for 2D environments elements such as: plan, section, elevation.
orthographic projection of design elements to create 3D objects using: one point & 2 points
perspective, axonometric & isometric views
Process of architectural drawings including site layout, plan, section & elevation, details
Introduction to drafting systems (scale, dimensions, codes and symbols, lines, etc.)
Understanding Design principles like Balance, Rhythm, Harmony, Contrast, Symmetry, Scale,
Proportions etc. leading to unity & creativity in design.
Understanding the relationships between architectural spaces, forms & order in terms of function,
beauty & durability.
The importance climatology consideration of the site location, the orientation, materials, etc.
Sessional works include 4 interim exams, plus 4 projects (2 each semester), introduction the
elements of the habitat (Arabic House).

2- Free-hand drawing & Model making (1):

- Course description:

The course aims to introduce the student to visual arts to understand the principles of design in
abstract.
Techniques of Arts Drawing architecture sculpture painting - models Industrial art.
Sessional work including sketch drawing every class plus assignment with (pencil, charcoal, ink,
china ink and coloring & model making as well).

3- Mathematics, Mechanics and Statics (1):


- Number of weekly actual hours: 2 (theoretical), 2 (practical)
- Weighting scoring system: 20 % interim exam, assignment, 80 % final exam.

Series, number (e), derivative differential applications, definite increments, entire series, definite
and the indefinite integrals, doubled integration, Tri-integration.
Essential notions in deferential equations of the second degree having different forms.
Applications of the differential equations in the solution of some moving problems, the analytic in
the space.

Definition, vertical projection on two perpendicular surfaces (Mauge Method)


Changing of the level, rotation, application, Polly faces, shades, inclined surfaces, lines, planar
geometric projections.

- Course description: English

Remedial Grammar skills: main verb form & tenses, negative question and answers, modal verbs,
the passive, passives, modal verbs, nouns & articles, reported speech.
Usage of the oral skills to functional communication with all aspects of daily life through
dialogues.
Improving Listening comprehension, understanding listening process, the barriers, via authentic
materials and exercise on architectural engineering topics.

- Course description:
Lectures dealing with Arab National ideology

Proportion, Chaos to order & coordinate scale, proximity, balance and rhythm rules (eye-mindhand/perceptual)
Drawing and painting: drawing with both the freehand and geometrical technique shapes, nature
and manmade objects.

3- Mathematics, Mechanics and Statics (2):


- Number of weekly actual hours: 2 (theoretical), 2 (practical)
- Weighting scoring system: 20 % interim exam, assignment, 80 % final exam.
- Course description:

The fundamental study of the mechanical geometry, the definition of the kinds of vectors (their
sum and their tension), the equilibrium of point and solid bodies, (smooth surfaces, and rough
surfaces) the necessary directive quantities in the mechanics.

4- Perspective and Shade (1):

- Weighting scoring system: 50 % sessional work, 50 % final exam.
- Course description:

The course aims to understand the isometric & perspective view and Sociography.
Basic skill of presentation & rendering techniques & rendering by understanding the Scale, 2D3D objects relationship
Understanding object angles and views
Projection theories, Orthographic projection: Projection of straight lines-traces, true length,
planes, solids.
One and two point perspectives of interior and exterior views, isometric and oblique three
dimensional views, conical projections,
Sociography principles of two-dimensional objects in plan and elevation. Sociography of three
dimensional objects (isometric, Axonometric & Perspective)

Pre-historic architecture, old Egyptian architecture, Old oriental architecture.

6- Building Construction (1):

basic notion starting from simple building elements, components, materials and construction
techniques, with exposure to construction sites.
Construction materials properties (clay, Masonry, concrete, metals, glass, wood, plastic, timber &
allied products).
Brief explanation of temporary works: excavation, shoring, underpinning, scaffolding
Substructure works: trenches. types of Foundation (Simple split, steeped, combined and
cantilevered footing, RCC footing and raft foundation etc.) types of soils and bearing capacity,
waterproofing types & technology.
Super structure works types of slabs. types of roofs, types of R.C.C frame, scaffolding systems.
Concrete technology, design mix, formwork types & technology for simple & complex structure.

7- Arabic language (1):

- Course description:
Improvement of the Arabic language skills and analytical report writing in Arabic

SECOND YEAR
FIRST SEMESTER
1- Architectural Design Studio (1):
- Number of weekly actual hours: 10 (practical)
- Weighting scoring system: 50 % (sessional work) 2 projects, 25 % 2 interim exams, 25 % final
exam.
- Course description:

Understanding design methodology processes & operations including: data collection, site
analysis, climate & environment consideration, space program & end-user requirements, area
analysis, bubble diagram, design matrix, evolution of plan, relationship between plan & exterior
form & elevations, application of design theme and unity, application of design by-laws.
Application of the graphical skills and 3-dimensional presentation techniques to express the
totality of design concept.
Sessional works includes 4 interim exams and 4 projects on actual sites (2 each semester),
suggested building types are villa (old Arabic style, Modern style), dispensary, small
administrational center, workshop, Gymnasium, students hostel, motel,etc.
Viva-voce by examiner at the end of each project

Usage of clay, metal scrap, Jute fiber and similar materials to come up with organic forms
Usage of card boards, plywood sheets, acrylic, to come up with geometric forms
Understanding joinery in wooden construction and bonds in masonry

Various components of building and material from foundation up to roof.


Classification & origin of building materials,
natural materials, clay, brick, jointing and pointing
Stone: Classification of rocks, types of test, preservations, cuts and finishes.
Masonry: types of test cavity walls, flooring copings, sills, lintels, corbels, Arches.
Hybrid materials: Concrete, types & tests, reinforcing, ingredients, resistance. Construction
technology, Ceramic, Mortar.
Ferrous materials: Metals types & tests, formation, Mild steel and tor steel reinforcement.
Aluminum, cooper
Glass types & tests, ingredients and manufacture of Glass (tempered, laminated, etc.). Forms &
properties.

4- Perspective and Shade (2):

- Course description:

Architectural rendering of the facades and perspective,


Study of shadow of 2D and 3D objects with different angles (shadow of line, circle, plain, cubic,
sphere, etc.) in sunlight and artificial light.

5- History of Architecture (2):

- Course description:

The Hellenic architecture and Greek art, the Roman architecture, the Christian architecture in
Syria, the Etrusque architecture, the urban planning in Classical Eras.

6- Building Construction (2):

- Weighting scoring system: 30 % sessional work, 80 % final exam.
- Course description:

Masonry Works (walls types and construction technology): cavity panel walls, solid load bearing,
light weight concrete blocks, glass block, Precast panel walls

sketching. life drawing (Rapid sketching of man in action/motion old city)
Creative skills: Sculpture or optics, Media exploration, ideograms and art lettering.

- Course description:

Power static, the structure beams, (calculation of the reaction) in the assigned structures. The
internal powers in the structures (cutting powers), the forces definition-low of elasticity- the
distribution of forces in the section influenced by the (axial forces) bounding moment, the cutting
force, the tensional moment.

Application of totality of design methodology processes & operations.


Introducing elector-mechanical services into building design with suitable spaces & locations
(shafts, tanks, central heater, electric rooms, generator, A/C ducting, )
assigning appropriate structure system as part of architectural form design (concrete, steel, space
frame) innovative structure solutions based on architecture concepts.
Sessional works includes 4 interim exams and 4 projects on actual sits (2 each semester),
suggested building types are school, recreation center, clinic, office building, library, bank etc.
Viva-voce by examiner at the end of each project

2- Working Design Studio (1):

The course aims to understand the working details in construction (from foundations up to roof)
for various types of buildings
Definition of basic principles of executive design & drafting systems in plans, sections and
elevations: (codes, symbols, lettering, axis, levels, materials hatches, cross-referencing, etc.)
Cross sectional Details (transverse and longitudinal sections)
Application of executive design elements on architectural projects.

architecture design studio class

3- Structural Analysis (1):


- Number of weekly actual hours: 2(theoretical), 2 (practical)
- Weighting scoring system: 20 % interim exam, assignment, 80 % final exam.
- Course description:

Simple Beams, Fixed beams with concentrated load and uniformly distributed load (over
complete span, Categliante theory (Maxwell low), loads theory.
Continuous beams (without settlement) with uniform sections by three moments. Only vertical
load and uniformly distributed load over whole span by theorem of three moments.

4- Theories of Architecture (2):

- Course description:

Foundational theoretical knowledge about Design principles of different types of buildings


including Housing, hospitals, touristic, recreation centers, transportations, Educational,
Commercial and Administrational buildings.
Islamic architecture rules and principles
Contemporary architecture types including: functionalism, organism, cubism, Bauhaus and
international style, Post-modern & deconstruction.

5- Theories & Methods of Construction:

- Course description:

Performance analysis and formal characteristics of building materials.


Comparison of Structure systems (bearing walls, skeleton, box frame, space frame, special
Structures: Grids, Domes, shells, folded plates, tensile, concrete & steel structure)
Foundation design and soil types &aspects.
Load bearing and stress solution to design structure sections via different materials.
Tension members compression and shear
Theory of bending Distribution of shearing and bending stress on horizontal section.
Theory of Columns Eulers theory for different support conditions Rankins Formula,
eccentric loading on short column
Analysis of three hinged arches of parabolic and circular shape, Eddys theorem

Contextual vocabulary, and summarizing, note-making, ability to answer factual questions about
the text.

Moment distribution method for symmetrical portal frames with symmetrical load. concentrated
load and uniformly distributed load over whole span.
Understanding and identification of location of forces, bending moment and bending stress in
fixed beam, over hanging beams, continuous beams, Portal frames etc.

1- Diploma Project/ Graduation project:
- Number of weekly actual hours:18 (practical)
- Course description:

The project should encompass the totality of the academic study in all years, to deal with an
actual architecture problem or society need based on city or country plans.
The project is composed of following stages: data collection, schematic design, pre-final design,
final design, and final presentation. The student work is to be followed by tutor of 3 doctors.
An approval is conducted at the beginning for the selected topic, and then an intermediate review
after schematic design, final presentation is done in the presence of 7 doctors with at least 2
external examiners.
The presentation of Final design should have the following:
a. Architecture proposal (presented in a sufficient number of sheets to explain the design)
b. Construction details/working drawings
c. Urban planning approach in terms of site planning and surrounding zone.
c. appropriate service details for HVAC, firefighting, drainage & water supply, electric light &
power, installation systems.
d. exterior & interior rendered Perspectives shots and Model(s) to explain the design
