Good morning sir, how are you doing?

I am fine, thank you.
My name is Gilbert Rodriguez. Whats your name?
My name is Luis.
Ok., Luis, what can I sell you today?
Sell me? That fast?
Well, we have just unloaded twenty new Sunburns from the truck.
They are all fully loaded and the price is unbeatable. Do you want
to take a look at them?
Ok.
What color do you like?
My favorite color is dark green.
You are lucky then. Look at this green beauty. It is already calling
you daddy, ha, ha.
Yes, its nice.
Get inside the car, you cannot appreciate it from the outside, cmon.
Does it have a cd player?
Yes, but it is in the trunk. Look at the instrument cluster. It is very
sporty. And it has all the optionals you could have ever wanted.
Everything power, stereo, six speakers, leather interior, automatic
transmission, air conditioning, sunroof, automatic steering wheel
and drivers seat setup and a powerful engine.
Can I see the engine?
Of course. Pull the hood handle please.
The engine looks impressive.
It is impressive. V6, double overhead cam, four valves per cylinder, self adjusting valves, electronic fuel injection, distributorless
ignition, and more. You wont have to tune up the engine for the
first 100,000 miles
I dont know much about mechanics but it sounds great.
Lets go for a test ride and you will see how smooth it rides. The
engine is so quiet that you will think you are sailing.

How does it feel Luis?
It is incredible. It is very smooth.
You havent seen the best. Push the throttle all the way down.
Ooops! How powerful, it flies!
Now push the brakes all the way down until you get to a complete
stop.
Ok.,............... Uooou!! The brakes are great.
It is equipped with the latest ABS brake system. Safety is number
one in this car. It has both driver and passangers side air bags, as
well as side air bags.
Lets go back to the dealer. Turn around....
Allright, so, should I start the paperwork for the green Sunburn?
Well, I need to think a little bit before doing anything.
It could be too late when you decide. We only have two green
Sunburns, but only one is fully equipped. Plus, the sale ends next
Saturday, and I am not allowed to reserve any vehicles unless the
initial paperwork is started.
Well, I was not planning to buy this so soon...
Today is your opportunity. More clients are expected to come today.
I will have to ask my wife.
Ok., you can use this phone. I will step out for a minute. Do you
want some coffee?
No, thanks.
So, what did she say?
She wasnt there. But I know where she is. She is at the gym. You
know, I am going to pick her up now and bring her immediately
back to the dealer. Give me your card, I will be back.
Oh,oh, okay, did you leave your phone number?
What for?, Ill be back with my wife in a few minutes.
Allright, remember to ask for me!
You bet! Bye!............. Uf, it worked, I didnt know how to get rid of
that guy.

Excuse me. Can you check my blood pressure?
I need your first name, please.
Oh, I am sorry. My name is Laura Kopet.
Thank you. May I help you?
Yes, I have a headache, and I would like to know if you can
check my blood pressure.
Is this an emergency?
Well, no, but I usually have high blood pressure, and I always
worry when I get a headache. I want to make sure it is not
related to the blood pressure.
Ok., you will have to wait for a few minutes. Sit down, please.
Allright, thank you.
Mrs. Kopet!
Yes!
Have you ever been to this hospital before?
No, I havent.
Do you have any health insurance?
I have TravellersPlus health coverage. It covers any medical
costs incurred while I am travelling. Here is my card.
Allright, while I check your insurance with the office, you can
start filling out this form.
What?, that long form just to check my blood pressure?
I am sorry. You will have to fill it out once. Can you read
English?
Of course I can.
Okay, here is a pen.
It is ready. Let me ask you a question. Why do you need to call
the insurance? How much does it cost to check the blood
pressure?
Well, we are not going to check your blood pressure only. We
are going to check your temperature and the doctor might want
to examine you further. Patients with high blood pressure have
to be thoroughly examined to make sure they are ok.

If I had known all this, I wouldnt have driven to this

hospital. I would have had my blood pressure checked at a pharmacy.
I am afraid the pharmacies around here will not check your blood
pressure. They do not want to take the risk of giving you a
wrong figure and then get into trouble.
But in my country.......
I dont know about your country, but in this state, high blood
pressure is not a game. It will take you longer, but you will feel
safer.
I guess you are right.
Your turn, Mrs. Kopet.
Thank you.
Mrs. Kopet?
Hi, Doctor.
My name is Doctor Doe. So.., do you have high blood pres
sure?
Well, no, I have a headache, and I suffer from high blood pressure. I
generally get a headache when my blood pressure is high. I wanted
to check my blood pressure before anything else.
Okay. Ill have the nurse check your temperature and blood
pressure. Then, I will go and see you.
Ok., thank you.
How is my pressure doctor?
Your blood pressure is fine, and you dont have any fever.
Do you still have a headache?
It is going away.
At this time, I dont see anything wrong. You can take a pain
killer if you want. By the way, you have a nice tan, have you
been to the beach lately?
Oh, yes, I have laid on the beach for four hours. The sun was
real strong.
Mrs. Kopet, that could have easily caused the headache. An
extended exposure to the sun rays can give you a headache
and worst of all, can cause skin problems. You shouldnt
expose yourself to the sunrays for a long time.
Thank you very much for the advice, Doctor. I will be more
careful with the sun.

APLYING FOR ADMISSIONS TO AN MBA PROGRAM

ADMISSIONS OFFICER Good morning Mr.Santos. Did you have a good weekend?
YOU
Yes, thank you. Sorry for coming late to the appointment,
but the traffic was heavy.
ADMISSIONS OFFICER I know, the traffic in this city is terrible. It takes me one
hour to get to the school. And I just live fifteen miles
away.
YOU
Did you have a chance to review my application and
resume?
ADMISSIONS OFFICER Yes, I did. And I wanted to discuss with you some of the
pending issues.
YOU
Okay.
ADMISSIONS OFFICER First of all, from your application I can see that your choice
has been the MBA International Business specialization
program.
What made you choose that option?
In your resume there is no stated experience in
international business.
YOU
Well, the reason I selected the international business field
is because I work in a food production company, and
since they knew I was going to take a leave to complete
my postgraduate studies, they encouraged me to
pursue an international business program, so I could work
for their export division. As you can see in my resume,
my position at the company is domestic marketing
manager. They want to use my expertise in marketing
food products for their international market. When I complete the MBA, they will send me to different countries
to do marketing research, direct their marketing efforts,
and establish new opportunities.
ADMISSIONS OFFICER That is a great opportunity for you, you are one of the
few students who already have a job offer .
YOU
I know that, and that is why I want to start as soon as
possible. This program is going to open the doors to a
new career.
9

ADMISSIONS OFFICER And Im going to help you with that. By the way,
there is one more thing pending and it is your official
transcript from your undergraduate degree. We
have received your copy, but we require an official copy.
YOU
I know, but they take a long time to process documentation.
It is a public University, all administrative processes are slow.
ADMISSIONS OFFICER Look, since I know you need to start right away,
and your resume and educational achievements are
satisfactory, I will grant you temporary admission until
you can get me the official documents. The University
will give you three months for that. Do you think it is
enough?
YOU
Three months? I think thats okay. They cannot take more
than that.
ADMISSIONS OFFICER Congratulations then. Consider yourself admitted to the
University of Buttersvilles MBA program.
YOU
Oh, thank you. Thank you very much. So, when can I
start?
ADMISSIONS OFFICER You will be scheduled to start on September 25th. That is
the fall semester.
YOU
Do I need to sign up for any courses now?
ADMISSIONS OFFICER You have time for that. I am going to assign you a counselor, and you can plan your course load with him or her.
The most important thing you need to do now is to fill
out this registration form.
YOU
What about the tuition payment?
ADMISSIONS OFFICER You dont need to pay for the tuition now. You have until
the start date. But you need to pay me for the registration
fee now.
YOU
But, I did not bring the checkbook. I dont even have a
credit card with me.
ADMISSIONS OFFICER Never mind. Lets fill out the registration form now, and then
you will take it home and send it to me by mail with a
check or money order.
YOU
Okay.

Officer, excuse me, I would like to know how to get to LAX airport.
Its easy. Follow this street until you get to a stop sign. Turn right.
Go five blocks and when you hit the traffic light turn left. That will
be Wilshire Boulevard.
Then you will see a sign that says 405 freeway South, right lane.
Take that one. The moment you see the sign, youll have to get to
the right lane so you will be able to drive into the ramp with no
problems.
Allright. So, I will follow this street, stop sign turn right, then left
on Wilshire Blvd. and take 405 south. Then?
Okay, then you will stay on the freeway. You will pass the Santa
Monica freeway interchange, Venice Blvd., Washington Blvd., the
Marina freeway, Florence and Manchester. The next exit after
Manchester is Century Blvd. You will exit Century Blvd. Be
careful to remain on the right lane, because otherwise you can
end on Imperial Hwy. When you exit Century you will have to
turn left to get to Century Blvd. When you reach Century, turn
right, and it will take you straight into the airport. Are you picking
up someone or are you flying?
Oh, no, we are flying to Mexico.
Ok., then make sure to take the ramp that says departures, not
arrivals.
Where is that ramp?
It is at the end of Century Blvd. You cannot miss it.
Ok., I think I got it. Thank you very much officer.
It has been a pleasure to help you. Drive carefully.

ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS II.

YOU

Excuse me sir. Can you explain to me how to get to Yosemite National

Park?

CLERK

Yes, I will be glad. Do you have a map?

YOU

No, I m afraid I dont.

CLERK

I can sell you one if you want. It is good to keep one while you are
travelling through the state.

YOU

Okay.

CLERK

Lets see. From here take the interstate 5 north. Do you see it?

YOU

Yes, I do.

CLERK

Allright. Continue north on 5 until you get to the 99 Highway. You have to
take 99.

YOU

Is that north or south?

CLERK

It only goes north from this point. There are some towns along the 99, like
Bakersfield, which is pretty big. Then you have Mc Farland, Delano, Tulare,
Visalia and Selma. After Selma, around 15 miles, you will arrive at Fresno,
a big city. Watch for the sign that says 41 to Yosemite. Take 41 north.
You will go through Fresno and then the road will take you into the Sierra
Nevada. I would suggest a stop at Oakhurst. Oakhurst is one of the
typical gold rush towns of the Sierras foothills.
After Oakhurst, the road starts to climb the hills, and the scenery is that
of tall pine trees, some sequoias, and high mountains. The road takes
you directly into the national park.

YOU

You know, someone told me that you could enter the park through Highway 120, is it better this way?

CLERK

Well, Highway 120 is better if you are coming from San Francisco. Highway 41 is the fastest way from Los Angeles.

YOU

So we will have to take 120 after we visit the park.

CLERK

Oh, is San Francisco your final destination?

YOU

Yes, we will go to Yosemite, and then to San Francisco. By the way,

could you explain to us how to get to San Francisco from Yosemite?
15

CLERK

Of course. You can take either the 140 or the 120. I prefer the 140,
which has a more impressive scenery, though it will take you an extra
hour. The 120 will lead you into the 580, which takes you to the 880.
Take 880 north to the Bay Bridge, and you will have arrived at San
Francisco. If you take the 140 you will get to the 99. You must take the
99 north, and connect to the 580.

YOU

Thats pretty clear to me. By the way, will there be snow on the road?

CLERK

Snow? No, dont worry. It is summer now. You are lucky if you can get a
sizeble water flow at the falls. It hasnt rained for weeks.

YOU

Ok., then, it will be great for hiking!

CLERK

Yes, but I recommend taking enough water with you. And, of course, a
hat for each one.

YOU

Oh, we forgot the water and the hats!

CLERK

No problem, you can buy them here.

YOU

Ok.,great. What a service!

16

GETTING A TICKET
OFFICER

Your drivers license and registration please.

YOU

Oh,oh, yes.

OFFICER

Do you have any idea of why I am stopping you?

YOU

No, I dont.

OFFICER

Well, you were driving at 65 miles per hour, and the speed limit is 55.
Dont you look at the speedometer?

YOU

I am sorry, I didnt realize I was speeding. But it might have been for a
moment.

OFFICER

Well, I have been following you for five minutes and you were doing
65 all that time. I will have to give you a ticket for speeding.

YOU

I am sorry, but I have been driving for one hundred miles, and the
monotony of the highway can make you unaware of the
speedometer.

OFFICER

Yes, that could happen. May I ask you where you are going to?

YOU

Yes, We were going to Orlando.

OFFICER

Orlando?, you still have some good 150 miles ahead. Why dont you
drive to a parking lot and take a brief rest. I always do that when I am in
a long trip.

YOU

Thats a good suggestion. Plus, we were hungry. Well get something

to eat in that mall.

OFFICER

Let me give you some advice if I may. Try not to eat heavy, because
in about a half hour after a big meal, you might start feeling drousy,
and that is very dangerous. Dont allow all your passengers to fall
asleep. At least one of them should stay awake in case you start
getting tired.

YOU

Thank you for the advice officer.

OFFICER

You are welcome. Sign here please.

YOU

Sure.

OFFICER

Allright. Have a safe trip. Enjoy Orlando.

YOU

Thanks, bye!

RETURNING MERCHANDISE
YOU

Excuse me, where can I return this blender?

CLERK

Merchandise returns are taken care of here, at customer service.

What is the problem with your blender?

YOU

Oh, none. It was a gift for my wife and I didt realize we already
had the same blender in our kitchen.

CLERK

Would you like to exchange it for something else?

YOU

Well, I havent thought about it, because I already bought my wife a new
gift. But now that you are mentioning it, I could buy an electric razor.
Mine has broken yesterday.

CLERK

Great. Why dont you leave the blender here and get the razor? You can
find one down that aisle. Then come back here and Ill process the exchange and refund you the difference. By the way, did you bring the
receipt?

YOU

Yes, I did. But I have paid with a credit card. Can you credit the difference?

CLERK

Dont worry, sir. I will take care of everything.

YOU

Thank you, you are very nice!

Hi!
Good morning, may I help you.
Yes, please. I have had a terrible headache since this morning. I need a
pain reliever now. An effective one.
Ok., here we have a wide variety of them. Do you have any particular
preference?
I dont know anything about drugs. But now , I need a pain reliever, my
head is exploding.
I am sorry sir, but there are so many brands that I am afraid to give you
the wrong one.
Whats the difference? They are all pain killers, arent they?
Yes, but some have aspirin, and you might not take aspirin that well.
Allright, then, give me one without aspirin.
Sir, the others have different drugs, like ibuprofen, but the dosage varies
from 100 milligrams to 500 milligrams. I dont know what will be
effective for you without upseting your stomach.
Look, give me the smaller pills and if they are not strong enough I will
take more.
Allright, sir. Which brand do you prefer? Painlessil, Fastrelief, Strongenol
or HeadachePlus?
I dont know! Please choose for me.
Oh, there is a problem.
What now?!
The brand I like, Fastrelief, is out of stock. We only have Fastrelief Night.
Ok.,then, give me Fastrelief Night.
I am afraid that will not be a good idea. Fastrelief Night is prescribed for
night intake only because it can cause drousiness. You should not take
this one.Why dont you wait here while I ask the pharmacist at the
pharmacy to tell me which one is better, Painlessil, Strongenol or
HeadachePlus?
Never mind. With all this confusion, my headache went away. I wont
need any pain reliever. Thank you.
You are welcome. I am happy that you are feeling better.

put the weight on your legs and arms. Like this.

YOU

Oh, my hand hurts.

JOE

What happened?

YOU

I burned with boiling water.

JOE

Ok., put some ice on it, and then some antibiotic to prevent an
infection.

I cut my finger with a knife.

CHECKING THE OIL

CARLOS

How do you like my new car?

JOSE

Wow, its beautiful. When did you get it?

CARLOS

I brought it home this morning. I finally got rid of that old clunker. It
burned a lot of oil.

JOSE

This one will start smoking too if you dont take good care of it.

CARLOS

I want this beauty to last a long time.

JOSE

Then, you will have to check the oil on a regular basis.

CARLOS

Can you show me how to check it?

JOSE

Sure. Its easy. First make sure the car is parked on a level spot.
Open the hood, and pull the dipstick out of the sleeve.

CARLOS

Okay, then what?

JOSE

Wipe the oil off the dipstick with a clean rag. Stick it all the way back
into the sleeve and pull it out once again.

CARLOS

All right, go on.

JOSE

The oil level should be between the two lines.

If its at the lower line or below, you have to add a quart of oil. Dont
let it get above the upper line.

CARLOS

Is that all there is to it?

JOSE

Also check the oil itself. It must be free of water, gasoline or metal
particles.

CARLOS

Im going to take good care of this baby.

JOSE

Good! Now, lets go for a spin.

YOU NEED A TIRE

MARY

Hi, can you put some air in that rear tire please? Its very low, in
fact, its almost flat.

SERVICEMAN

Of course maam, right away. It looks like it has a slow leak. Do

you want me to check it?

MARY

Oh, I guess so, I dont want to get a flat on the road.

SERVICEMAN

This tire has a gash on the side wall.

Theres no way to repair it. Its very dangerous to drive around
like that.

MARY

Cant you put an inner tube in it?

SERVICEMAN

You cannot use an inner tube on a tubeless tire like this one. We
carry new tires this same size. We also sell used tires which are
quite cheap.

MARY

How long would it take to put one on?

SERVICEMAN

About ten minutes. I can start right away.

MARY

Oh, all right. I suppose I better play it safe. Ill take two new ones.
My husband said its better to buy them in pairs.

SERVICEMAN

Yes, thats a good idea. And you can keep the extra one as a
spare. Well install the two new ones in front.

SERVICEMAN

Ok., its ready. Let me write up the bill.

MARY

Did you check the air pressure on the other tires?

SERVICEMAN

Yes, I did, and they were fine. Youre all set. Heres your receipt.
Save it for the warranty. Thank you very much.

MARY

You are welcome. Have a nice day.
