I) Complexity
Academic text language is relatively more complex than spoken or other forms of
written language. It is lexically denser and has a more varied vocabulary. It uses
more noun-based phrases than verb-based phrases. Academic texts also usually use
more complex sentence structure and use reported speech.
Example :
II) Formality
Academic writing is relatively formal. In general this means that in an essay you
should avoid colloquial words and expressions.
Example :
No contractions (Its conducted It was conducted)
Less common words (difficult complicated)
III) Precision
In academic writing, facts and figures are given precisely.

IV) Objectivity
Academic texts in general are objective rather than personal. These texts therefore
have fewer words that refer to the writer or the reader. This means that the main
emphasis should be on the information that is given and the arguments that the
writer wants to make. For that reason, academic texts tend to use nouns (and
adjectives), rather than verbs (and adverbs).
Example :
V) Explicitness
The language in academic texts is explicit about the relationships in the text.
Furthermore, the writer makes it clear to the reader how the various parts of the
text are related. These connections can be made explicit by the use of different
signaling words.
Examples : Despite, Firstly, On the first hand, On the other hand, However, Because,
In retrospect, In hindsight, former, latter, likewise, furthermore, etc.
VI) Accuracy
Academic texts use vocabulary accurately. Most subjects have words with narrow
specific meanings. Scientific terms may be prevalent.
Example :
Experts believe the findings might lead to a more customized vaccine for
certain patients, which potentially might permit them to come off
antiretrovirals. ()
Experts believe the findings might lead to a more customized vaccine for
certain patients, which potentially might permit them to come off the drugs
used to treat HIV. (X)
VII) Hedging
In any kind of academic texts, the writer makes decisions about his stance on a
particular subject, or the strength of the claims he is making. Different subjects
prefer to do this in different ways.
A technique common in certain kinds of academic writing is known by linguists as a
hedge.
Example :
HPV infection can cause cervical cancer as well as other cancers such as
anal and vulvar cancers (hedged stating that theres a possibility that it
may cause)
HPV infection causes cervical cancer as well as other cancers such as anal
and vulvar cancers (not hedged stating that it definitely causes)
VIII) Responsible
Academic texts are responsible for, and must be able to provide evidence and
justification for, any claims made. The texts are also responsible for demonstrating
an understanding of any source texts used.
Classification Style
The patterns of exposition are really ways to organize thought, to develop ideas in
an
organized fashion so the reader can follow them easily. One common pattern of
exposition is classification and division. This pattern is used for analyzing topics.
When analyzing a subject, you break it down into parts to study or determine
the
relationship among the parts to determine the nature of the parts. For example,
analyzing a human body involves examining the parts to see how they make the
body
function.
would
probably begin by sorting the dreams into categories that share common
characteristics, and by so doing you might learn something about the various kinds
of
dreams. Taking one thing such as the human body and breaking it down into
parts is
analyzing by divisions; taking a large group of things such as animals and
separating
the
group
into
categories
is
analyzing
by
classification.
Since
classification
and division are very similar processes of analysis, and since as patterns of
exposition
they are even more similar, the general rhetorical term classification is used in this
module to refer to the general pattern.
Example
Any number of principles of classification are available for a given subject. To
illustrate, consider the subject food. This subject could be classified according to:

Categories
classification
How many calories the

2. Classify by a single principle. Once you have categories, make sure that
they adhere to the same organising principle. The organising principle is how
you sort the groups. Do not allow a different principle to pop up unexpectedly.
For example, if your unifying principle is "methods of preserving food", don't
bring in another unifying principle midway, such as "reasons for preserving
food," as this would introduce different categories not related to methods of
preserving food.

4. A thesis statement should express only one idea about one topic; if a thesis
statement contains two or more ideas, the essay runs the risk of lacking unity
and coherence.
Living in the city can be stressful, and I have found that staying in a condominium in
the city is the worst experience that contributes to this stress. (X)

several articles on a given topic. Once you have read the articles, you are required
to formulate a thesis statement based on the question. You are not required to
provide your own or new ideas. However, remember that a synthesis is NOT a
paraphrase or a summary. You are to consider what you have read; this means that
you should make connections and draw conclusions about the subject matter. Your
tone should be analytical, not reporting.
Synthesis writing skills will equip you to write good full research or review papers in
the future.
