ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Directions (Qs. 1 10): Read the following passage
carefully and answer the given questions. Certain
words/phrases are given in bold to help you to locate
them while answering some of the questions.
A person who lives near or next to another, as
dictionary defines neighbour. But todays urban society
feel disconnected from their neighbours, while half of
them admit they dont know the names of theirs
neighbours. In Delhi and NCR, one may feel relations in a
precarious balance'; neighbours are hesitant to intrude
even in emergenciesleading one to conclude that we
are less likely than ever to know our neighbours.
Lengthy working days, long commutes and both
parents working have combined with the way we raise
our children, the suburban neighbourhoods are empty
more than half the day, with scarcely a neighbour to
encounter, let alone recognize, trust or befriend. But,
however powerful the economic and social forces behind
the disappearing neighbour, the transformation is
poisoning our lives, our kids and, quite literally, killing
us.
People have so many friends on Facebook. But in the
neighbourhood they dont have many. It indicates how
virtual our real lives are! Increasingly, we live alone,
even while maintaining vibrant social networks with
like-minded souls, especially online.

So why are we so reluctant to let our neighbours into

our lives? Perhaps it is their very proximity that offends
us, at least in urban areas, and the fact that we can hear
the loud music on their late night parties and smell their
burnt shahi paneer.
I suppose we could try to give our neighbours a
chance; they might have the potential to be much more.
Like in the yester years neighbours were occasional
babysitters or used to receive the letters or parcels on
behalf of us, if we were temporarily absent from home.
What brings us closer to people halfway around the
world also makes strangers of those next door. We
willingly abandoned the bad, chafing aspect of our old
neighbourly ties; we have to somehow learn to maintain
the good habits of compromise and personal interaction
they also gave us.
Is something preventing us Delhites to grow a lovely
interactive social life with our immediate neighbours?
Why are we pretentious while crossing paths with a
person who lives next door? If we dont interact with our
neighbours, we wont be able to love ourselves the right
way. We should just ensure a hearty smile with the
family who lives next door, may be they need us, just the
way we need them.
