Kiki Open Scholarship Golf

Tournament returns July 19
Tournament raises funds for LRHSD scholarships in honor
of former superintendent Kereazis Kiki Konstantinos
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Former Lenape Regional High
School District superintendent
Kereazis Kiki Konstantinos was
known by district students and
staff for his dedication to fostering excellence in education.
More than 40,000 students received education under Konstantinos tenure as superintendent

from 1963 through his retirement

in 1993, and the district saw its
schools grow from one to three.
Although Konstantinos passed
away in 2002 at age 74, education
is still promoted in his name to
this day through scholarships
awarded to district students every
year by the K. Kiki Konstantinos
Scholarship Foundation.
However, foundation chair
Steve Zeuli said the group cant

do it alone, so hes once again

inviting members of the public to
attend the foundations 24th annual Kiki Open Scholarship Golf
Tournament fundraiser on Tuesday, July 19 at the Medford Lakes
Country Club in Medford Lakes.
Mr. Konstantinos, Kiki as he
was known, was the architect and

in our opinion

Would legalizing pot be good?

Too many unknowns exist for us to agree to that
he taboo that hovered over
marijuana for years is rapidly
evaporating into a puff of
white smoke. Gone are the Reefer
Madness days with the belief that
marijuana does significant harm to a
persons body. Gone, too, seems to be
the belief that marijuana is a gateway to more serious drugs.
Across the country, marijuana laws
have loosened from legal medical
marijuana in states such as New Jersey to the decriminalization of it in
Philadelphia to the full legalization of
it for recreational use in states such as
Colorado.
Pot is now more of a socially-accepted practice, and its becoming a big
business one that advocates for its
legalization in New Jersey say could
reap $300 million in sales tax revenue
per year.
A joint report released by the New
Jersey United Marijuana Reform and
New Jersey Policy Perspective said almost 370,000 people in New Jersey 21
and older use marijuana illegally on a

monthly basis, according to federal

data. The consumption of 2.53 million
ounces of weed a year, at the street
price of $343 per ounce, nets about
$869 million in sales.
The report estimates that if New
Jersey were to legalize pot, control its
sale like that of alcohol and tax it at 25
percent, that could result in quite the
boost to the states economy.
Representatives from the group and
other weed advocates say its time for
the full legalization. Gov. Christie has
said for a long time that he will not be
the governor to sign such a bill into
law, but he leaves office after next year.
Starting in 2018, then, its at least a
possibility that legalized marijuana
for recreational use will come up for a
vote in the Legislature.

Dan McDonough Jr.

Were glad that discussion is most

likely two years away, because we
dont feel theres enough solid information on the effects of legalized marijuana to say the money is worth it.
At the forefront of this lack of information, for us, is the absence of clear
knowledge of the effect of legalizing
pot on impaired driving. Colorado, for
example, handles stoned driving as
a DUI, no different than being under
the influence of alcohol. But there are
no field tests to see whether a driver is
stoned, and blood tests only say the pot
was in a persons system recently, not
necessarily at the time he or she was
driving.
There are plenty of other concerns,
too, such as the long-term effects of
prolonged use of marijuana, whether
its something we should be promoting
and whether were legalizing it just for
the windfall of cash.
Theres a lot to think about, a lot to
study and a lot to discuss.
Were just glad we wont have to do
that soon.

Prom House a success for Seneca prom-goers

The third annual Prom House 110 Carranza took place on the evening of Friday,
May 20. About 190 students came to Seneca
directly after prom and stayed until 5:30
a.m. The evening began with a breakfast,
including an omelet station. After breakfast, the seniors and their prom dates went
to see a show featuring Chad Juros, the magician. The show ended with the levitation
of a student who had volunteered. The students then moved on to the gym area,
where they had the option to participate in

boardwalk games, a glow room or relax in

a movie. Mrs. Bryan's decorations took the
atmosphere to a new level. The students
then went to see an interactive mind reading show, featuring Larry and Raven.
The last part of the journey ended with
the prize giveaways. Seniors had the opportunity to win a variety of prizes donated by Seneca families, teachers, administrators, advisors, coaches and local businesses. They included gift cards, a variety
of basket donations, Keurigs, 32-inch TVs,

wireless speakers and headphones, Apple

TV, Apple watches, an iPad and keyboard,
luggage, college fridge and more. The
morning ended with a car giveaway. Chris
Stahl won the 2005 Ford Focus donated by
Medford Ford.
The Tabernacle Alliance and Seneca
Goodness are huge contributors to the success of the event. The Seneca Family is sincerely grateful for all the support needed to
keep our students involved in good decisions.

today, Zeuli said. Theres thousands and thousands of students

that have been benefited from his
planning and his enthusiasm and
his instruction.
According Zeuli, rather than
honor Konstantinos with a token
such as a gold watch upon his retirement, a group of community
members chose to establish a
foundation bearing Konstantinos
name to provide scholarships to
senior students.
Zeuli said the scholarship program initially started by offering
one scholarship to one student at
each of the districts three
schools in 1993, but as the years
went on and Seneca High School
was added to the district, the
foundation eventually grew to offering four scholarships to each of
the districts four schools.
The standards used to award
the scholarships are also in-line
with those set by Konstantinos
himself, who during his time as
superintendent saw the district
maintain excellence in academics, sports and student activities.
Scholarship winners exhibit
strength in all three of those
areas, and, according to Zeuli,
with the money collected so far
this year, the foundation has
raised more than $450,000 for its
scholarships since it began.
However, as Zeuli points out,
the annual golf tournament on
July 19 is the foundations one
and only fundraising event for
the entire year, so Zeuli is inviting
all those interested in promoting
education in the district to sign
up.
We have all of these scholarships, one fundraising event,
Zeuli said.
Zeuli said this year the foundation will also be funding one additional scholarship in honor of
former foundation member and
former LRHSD board member
Earl Siegman, who passed away
in August of last year.
He, like Kiki, was a true archi-

tect of many of the things that

went on in this district, Zeuli
said. He was a board member for
many years as well as a great
community servant.
Those interested in supporting
the foundation through the golf
tournament can sign up for a full
day of activities for $210, which
includes the golf outing, a luncheon buffet and the dinner and
awards ceremony. Those looking
to help the foundation but stay off
the green can sign up for just

cocktails and dinner for $95.

For those looking to give more,
multiple sponsorship opportunities ranging from $125 to $5,500
are also available.
Those looking for more information about signing up, donating or sponsorships can call Zeuli
at (856) 768-1985 or visit
www.kikiopen.org.
The foundation asks those interested in playing in the tournament to sign up by July 5 to ensure their reservation.

that I can fill the shoes of Marie

Goodwin and do a great job for
the district, Archer said.
Laura brings with her a
wealth of knowledge from her
years of experience as an assistant school business administrator at the Hopewell Valley School
District. I anticipate a smooth
transition of the position and
look forward to working with
Laura, Superintendent Christine Vespe said.
Archer has a passion for her
community and numbers. Wanting to be involved more with the
community, she sought to work in
her hometown for the Northern
Burlington County Regional
School District. With her love for
numbers, working on the financial end seemed like a great fit.
My first job was in the district
where I went to high school. It
was nice to be a part of that community and school district. Ive
always been interested in numbers and always liked the financial end of it, Archer said.
She worked hard to obtain a
bachelors of arts degree in management from then Stockton College, now Stockton University,
and a masters of science degree
in management with a focus in
school business administration
from then Thomas Edison State
College, now Thomas Edison

State University.
Working in schools since 1999,
Archer held various positions in
schools such as accounts payable
manager, health benefits manager, accountant, controller and
eventually assistant business administrator.
Archer comes from the
Hopewell Valley Regional School
District, where she has been assistant business administrator
for two years. She has learned a
lot from business administrator/board
secretary
Robert
Colavita during her time at
Hopewell Valley Regional School
District and felt it was time for
her to further her career.
It was the next step for my career. Im ready to take on more,
Archer said.
While looking at districts to
apply to, Archer said her interview with Shamong felt very
promising, almost like she was at
home. When the district offered
her the position, she was very
happy and excited.
When I interviewed with Superintendent Christine Vespe and
Marie Goodwin, I got such a great
feeling of welcome and that I
would be able to learn and work
well (at the district). I was very
excited they offered me the position, and I will work very hard for
them, Archer said.
Archer feels STS is the best
size school district for her right
now. Hopewell Valley Regional
School District has 3,797 students,
while Shamong has fewer than
900 students.

Her favorite part of working

for a school district as assistant
business administrator has been
the ever-changing nature of the
job. She said youre working in
various areas from facilities to
transportation to payroll, keeping
everything lively and interesting
each day. Archer feels the hardest
part as a business administrator/board secretary will be in the
beginning, learning how the
schools are run and what the
schools need. However, she said
she is more than willing to take
on the task.
Archer believes her various experiences in the business office,
working in every position and
speaking to many members of
the staff, will make her a great
asset. She plans on relying on current workers for help in the beginning, but eventually running
things herself and putting in her
own input.
When Archer is not at work,
she is a wife, mother and coach.
Archer is married to her husband
David and is a mother of two,
Hunter, 15, and Haylei, 13. She
and her family are lovers of all
things outdoors, from biking to
gardening. She is also a softball
coach for the Jersey Outlaws
Elite Travel Softball Team.
I just feel that being outdoors
is a calming experience, out in nature and enjoying the trees, sky
and sun. I find it to be very calming, Archer said.
Archer will begin her new job
as business administrator/board
secretary for Shamong July 1.

Indian Mills choir sings at Soul game

Special to The Sun

Pictured in the back row are Bridget Werner, Kaylee O'Rourke, Ella
Sharpless, Dolores Mancinelli, Payton Lawless, Brianna Montrose,
Sophia Cino and Samantha Kiraly. Front row: Kimi King, Ella Sawdy,
Brenna Derby, Molly Angelov, Mason Laarkamp and Alexandra Smith.
Kneeling are Megan Thomas, Morgan Gall, Mrs. Styers, Marissa
Tuman and Jazmyn Cruz.

On May 14, the Indian Mills

Memorial Schools choir, under
the direction of Susan Styers,
performed the National Anthem
before the start of the Philadelphia Soul game. Over the years,
the choir has become a mainstay
of the Philadelphia Thanksgiving
Day celebration and a regular at
the Camden Riversharks. Unfortunately, the Riversharks disbanded and the choir was left
looking for another venue.
The Soul public relations department stepped up and the
choir was back in business. This
annual performance at sporting
events supplements the choirs

JUNE 17, 2016 THE SHAMONG SUN 13

St. Mary of the Lakes School

takes part in Day of Service
On April 29, students at St.
Mary of the Lakes School in Medford spent the day participating
in a Diocesan-wide Day of Service.
Children made placemats, centerpieces and delivered lunches to
Cathedral Kitchen in Camden;
collected canned food items for
both Cathedral Kitchen and St.
Vincents; wrote letters to servicemen and servicewomen; decorated cards for the Cards4Kids;
made a banner and cards for a
local childrens hospital; picked
up trash and recycling at Freedom Park; cleaned up the
grounds and trails of Medford
Leas and the Community Center
park at Rancocas Trail; brought
bagged lunches, planted flowers,
and sang songs to the seniors at
Medford Senior Residence Apartments; collected toiletries and
made baskets for seniors; and
participated
in
a
Spring
Cleanup at Camp Ockanickon.
The school community is
proud of its students and their
dedication to service. This Day of
Service was purposely scheduled
near the day the Catholic Church
observes the Memorial of St.
Joseph the Worker. The project is
a way for Catholic school students and other representatives
to give back to their communities
and to put into action the Episcopal motto of their bishop, Most.
Rev. David M. OConnell, C.M.:
To serve and not to be served.
OConnell affirmed the efforts
of all who will play a role in the
Day of Service, and underscored
that acts of service make up an
integral part of the daily experience in Catholic school.
Having a day like this in
which all of our schools participate is so important because it
demonstrates what a significant
difference we can make together,
OConnell said.

Sometimes you want to sell your home quickly,

and without all the fuss. Maybe it''s because of the passing of
a loved one, a divorce, or just the desire to get the job done
without having to fix all that's wrong with your house.
Either way, when you want to sell quickly
and as-is, give 302 Wholesale a call.
WE CAN COME SEE YOUR HOME AND MAKE AN OFFER FAST -AN OFFER THAT IS ALL CASH, AND COMMISSION FREE,
FOR YOUR HOME IN AS-IS CONDITION.
AND OUR CLOSINGS ARE DAYS, NOT WEEKS, AWAY.

Special to The Sun

Students from St. Mary of the Lakes School recently participated in

a Diocesan-wide Day of Service. Some of the activities included picking up trash and recycling, collecting canned goods and planting
flowers.
