Simplified Pizza Menu
Copies of 3 sizes of plain pizza crust and toppings
Pizza game & dice for each group
Tell students that today they will learn how to order pizza in a famous New York Pizzeria. You will learn typical American toppings for pizza
and the typical sizes to order at a pizzeria. This is important , because if you want to eat in another country you need to know how to
order food!
We will determine proficiency in ordering in a role playing exercise where the students will order a pizza with each other.
Explain that in the United States pizza is a staple and enjoyed in every town
Put up the sample menu on the white board. Ask the students if they have ever been to New York. Discuss a
couple of their experiences.
Put up a map of the USA. Point to NYC.
Explain that NYC comprises of many regions that really include three different states. Tell the students about a
time you were in NYC.
Put up the map of NYC, NJ and Connecticut
Pair off the students. Ask the students to use their iPads and the Google Earth app to locate Grimaldis Pizzeria
on the map.
Once located, tell them this is where they are going to pretend to go today and will order a pizza. Explain this is
one of the most famous pizzerias in the United States and NY is known for great pizza. Explain that by the end of
the week each pair or students will demonstrate how to order a pizza by size and topping.
Put the sample menu back up on the white board. Review the vocabulary by repeating it together.

Guided Practice
Part I
Modeling:
Play one round of the pizza game
showing students how to play
Hand out the pizza game and give instructions to play the game.
Roll the di in the front of the class and everyone repeat the number together.
Instruct the students that the person rolling the di can choose a topping.
Once they choose the topping they need to repeat: I would like (topping of choice).
Person to the left then takes his/her turn.
Demonstrate this by choosing a toping and placing it on the number rolled. Then state clearly, I would like peperoni
Ask the students if they have any questions about the game.
Proceed with the play. Give the students 15 minutes to finish the game. Walk around the room and answer questions; help students
if they are stuck on words and reinforce pronunciation. Remind them to repeat the number they roll.
Part II
Assessment
With a notebook and class list, walk around the room with the pairs and assess pronunciation, vocabulary knowledge
and following instructions in target language.
Have them video their experience at a pizzeria ordering a pizza and upload. Play videos in class and critique together.
