Lesson Introduction (2-3 mins approx.) Resources

Lesson phase 1
(Share lesson outcomes with children, introduce key learning point, link to previous learning, set lesson
expectations)
Today boys and girls we are going to talk about our weekends. When we are
telling about what we did we are not going to use and all the time. Can you think
of other things to say? We are going to talk to everyone in big loud voices and
we are going to listen carefully to each other.
Lesson phase 2 (10mins approx.)
(Part of lesson where teacher teaches, new material is outlined, demonstrated and explained)

Children gathered in a circle on the floor.

Have you thought about other words we can use instead of and all the time?
Take some examples and give some to the children.
After that
Next
Then
Before that
Finally.

Teacher begins telling about her weekend using other words as well as and.
On Friday I went to visit some friends and we watcher a DVD. When it was over
I came home and went to bed. Next day I went to Belfast with my friend ad her
baby. We did some shopping then went for lunch. After that we came home
and I did some work for school. On Sunday I went to mass with my brother.
When I came home mammy and I went to get a few things in Ballymena. Finally
I got everything ready to come to school today.

Did I use other words to talk about my weekend as well as and, what words did I
use?
Can you try to use those words too?

Lesson Development (15-20mins approx) Resources
Lesson phase 3
(The key section of the lesson. Children are given the opportunity to make personal sense of the material they
have encountered, information becomes learning. Time needs to be spent on activities and tasks that enable the
learners to manipulate and interrogate information in order to make sense of it.)

Each child in turn talks about its weekend. They are encouraged to use other
words as well as and to tell their peers about their weekend.

Focus of teacher interactions during learning phase

(Plan and describe what the teacher will do or who the teacher will work with once all the children have settled to complete their
tasks)
Teacher will work with the whole class encouraging them to speak out in front of their class and
will encourage them to use some of the words discussed at the beginning of the lesson.

Lesson Conclusion (5-10mins approx.) Resources

Lesson phase 4
(Review, reflect and summarise lesson, ensure children know what they know, cement learning and
understanding and ensure that it is remembered)
What new words did we learn to use today?
Teacher writes them on the blackboard.
What can these words mean the same as? And.

Did everyone have a nice weekend?

What must we remember to do when we are telling everyone else about our
weekends? Talk out loud in a nice clear voice.
