Abstract
Purpose
Todiscussthepresentation,diagnosis,treatment,histopathological
findings,andcomplicationsofpatientswhounderwentthyroidectomyfor
substernalgoiterinoursurgicalclinic.

Methods
Weretrospectivelyanalyzed170patientswithsubsternalgoitersamong
2650patientsundergoingsurgicaltreatmentforvariousthyroiddiseases
between1990and2003.Weevaluatedtheclinicaldata,preoperative
diagnosticfindings,surgicaltreatments,histopathologicalresults,and
postoperativecomplications.

Results
Themostcommonsymptomswereacervicalmass(88%)anddyspnea

(35%),but26%ofthepatientswereasymptomatic.Chestradiography
providedthefirstevidenceofasubsternalgoiterin77%ofthepatients.We
performedtotalorneartotalthyroidectomyandoperatedthroughacervical
incisioninallbut12ofthepatients.Therewasnooperativemortalitybut12
(7%)patientssufferedtemporaryhypoparathyroidismand4suffered
transientvocalcordparalysis(2%).Malignancywasdiagnosedby
histopathologicalexaminationin22(13%)patients.

Conclusion
Wethinkthatthediagnosisofasubsternalgoiterisanindicationfor
thyroidectomy,whichisassociatedwithverylowpostoperativemorbidity.
