The skate park at the Creston and District Community

Complex has been closed permanently due to condition
and safety risks to users, advised the RDCK. The RDCK
is committed to replacing the skate park. Funding has
been allocated in the 2016 budget to begin planning site
selection, preliminary design and cost estimates for a new
facility. The RDCK directors determined that spending
significant money on temporary repairs at the old park
wasnt the best use of resources, said Larry Binks, chair
of the Creston Valley Services Committee. The plan is to
prepare for a new and modern skate park by getting the
community engaged and prepared for funding and partnership opportunities.
The existing park will be demolished and removed from
the Creston and District Community Complex in 2016.
RDCK staff will be working on planning and design for a
new skate park in the next few months.

Theatrical
Production
Audiences of all ages are

invited to this years Homelinks
theatrical production A Spring
Mosaic. This year, the Homelinks students aged 4 15, under
the guidance of program coordinator Catherine Locke, have
split into four equal groups by
age to present their first student
designed shows.
Each group chose their own
story to bring to life, a cast list
was created and actors spent
some time discussing the casting and audition process. The
task was then set for them to cast
themselves.
The actors are excited to have
an audience join them to travel
back in time to visit Captain
Blackbeard in their stage version of The Time Warp Trio: Not
So Jolly Roger, journey through a
wardrobe in a condensed adaptation of C.S. Lewis The Lion,
the Witch and the Wardrobe,
blend comedy, music and dance
in Cinderella Retold and discover the importance of friendship in their take on The Legend
of Cowboy Ninja Bear.
You can catch the performance
of these four theatrical presentations on Thursday, June 2 at 1
pm and 4 pm, at the Covenant
Church, 702 Stanley Street, Nelson. Admission is by donation.

Hugh Walker - Citizen of the Year
Hugh moved to Kaslo in 1991 and immediately became immersed in

Kaslos multifaceted culture. Hugh has never been known to refuse help
to anyone; he is a very kind, caring and generous man. A few of the reasons
Hugh was nominated are (in no particular order):
He has tutored/mentored kids; he has been on the Kaslo Restorative Justice Committee; has
been a volunteer and a proud supporter of Kaslo Community Church. Hugh has been involved
in the monthly mens breakfast for years. He was a director with the Kaslo Housing Society (he
held many garage sales at his home for this society) and was president of the Seniors Group.
He has been involved with the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He was active in the Royal
Art Lodge. Over the years he has provided many, many rides to fellow Kaslovians who needed
a ride, and at 92 years of age he is still driving. He visits many shut-ins at their home.
Hugh served as the chairman and as a director on the Kaslo Victorian Hospital Board and was
a principal player in the hospital expansion years ago. He has volunteered at the Kaslo Extended Health unit for over 500 weeks and every Sunday he can be found helping out at the church
service held there. In fact, if the appointed official doesnt show, Hugh has been known to
conduct the entire service himself. Also, he has volunteered to be the communication person
for the BC Provincial Program if a disaster should ever hit Kaslo.

He has been a participant on Kaslos Official Community Plan committee; was a member of the
Ham Radio Club in Nelson, and with his knowledge of ham radios has repaired many for fellow Kaslovians, at no charge. Hugh is a Service
Officer for the Legion and the Honour Guard contact person for the presentation on Remembrance Day. Always a strong advocate for veterans,
in the summer of 2009, Hugh and another gentleman (Jim Tinkess) discovered that a Kaslo WW1 Veteran, Willam Dunn, had been buried in
an unmarked grave. With the help of a historical researcher, the two of them were able to obtain funds to cover the cost of a beautifully engraved
granite headstone for this veteran.
We could not have a better Kaslo booster. Every chance he gets to promote our village, he sings our praises!
Yes, Hugh Walker has been an amazing volunteer in our town, but to most he has been a loyal friend, and would lend an
ear or a shoulder to lean on to anyone in need. His generosity has shown no limits. Thank you Hugh, for all you have done!

Volunteers For BC Bat Counts

The Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) is seeking volunteers for the annual BC Bat Count. This citizen-science initiative encourages residents to count bats
at local roost sites. Bat counts are a wonderful way for
residents to get involved in collecting important scientific
information says Leigh Anne Isaac, coordinator for the
KCBP. No special skills are needed, kids can be involved
and you can relax in a deck chair while counting.
This year the annual BC Bat Count will help the BC
Ministry of Environment (MoE) collect baseline data on
bat populations before the devastating White Nose Syndrome fungal disease affects bats in the province.
White Nose Syndrome is estimated to have killed more
than six million bats since it was first discovered in eastern North America a decade ago, says Dr. Purnima Govindarajulu, MoE biologist. In March 2016, the disease
was detected just east of Seattle. This has greatly increased
our urgency to understand bat populations in BC. We
need the publics help to census local bat populations. The
summer of 2016 may be our last year to obtain population estimates before White Nose Syndrome causes widespread declines in western North America.
Volunteers wait outside a known roost site, such as a
bat house, barn, bridge or attic and count bats as they fly
out at twilight. They record the final number along with
basic information on weather conditions. Ideally, one-two
counts are done
between June 1
and 21 before
pups are born
and
one-two
more between
July 21 and
August 15 when
pups are flying.
We
know
relatively little
about bats in
the Kootenay
region including basic information on population numbers says Isaac.
This information will be extremely valuable, particularly
if it is collected annually. If people want to get involved
but dont have a roost site on their property, we will try to
match them with a roost site nearby.
Funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and with support of the BC Conservation Foundation, Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund and
the Columbia Basin Trust, the KCBP provides information for people dealing with bat issues on their property or have questions about how to attract bats. To find
