himperformingwithDonCherry.[3]

Records.TogetherwithEricDolphy,HubbardwastheonlysidemanwhoappearedonbothOland
Africa/Brass,Coltrane'sfirstalbumwithImpulse!.Later,inAugust1961,HubbardrecordedReadyfor
Freddie(BlueNote),whichwasalsohisfirstcollaborationwithsaxophonistWayneShorter.Hubbard
joinedShorterlaterin1961whenhereplacedLeeMorganinArtBlakey'sJazzMessengers.Heplayedon
severalBlakeyrecordings,includingCaravan,Ugetsu,Mosaic,andFreeForAll.Inall,duringthe1960s,
herecordedeightstudioalbumsasabandleaderforBlueNote,andmorethantwodozenasasideman.[4]
HubbardremainedwithBlakeyuntil1966,leavingtoformthefirstofseveralsmallgroupsofhisown,
whichfeatured,amongothers,pianistKennyBarronanddrummerLouisHayes.Thisgrouprecordedfor
Atlantic.
Itwasduringthistimethathebegantodevelophisownsound,distancinghimselffromtheearlyinfluences
ofCliffordBrownandMorgan,andwontheDownbeatjazzmagazine"NewStar"awardontrumpet.[5]
Throughoutthe1960sHubbardplayedasasidemanonsomeofthemostimportantalbumsfromthatera,
includingOliverNelson'sTheBluesandtheAbstractTruth,EricDolphy'sOuttoLunch,HerbieHancock's
MaidenVoyage,andWayneShorter'sSpeakNoEvil.[6]Hubbardwasdescribedas"themostbrilliant
trumpeterofagenerationofmusicianswhostandwithonefootin'tonal'jazzandtheotherintheatonal
camp".[7]Thoughheneverfullyembracedthefreejazzofthe1960s,heappearedontwoofitslandmark
albums:Coleman'sFreeJazzandColtrane'sAscension,aswellasonSonnyRollins'1966"NewThing"
track"EastBroadwayRunDown"withElvinJonesandJimmyGarrison.

Hubbardachievedhisgreatestpopularsuccessinthe1970swithaseriesofalbumsforCreedTaylorandhis
recordlabelCTIRecords,overshadowingStanleyTurrentine,HubertLaws,andGeorgeBenson.[8]
Althoughhisearly1970sjazzalbumsRedClay,FirstLight,StraightLife,andSkyDivewereparticularly
wellreceivedandconsideredamonghisbestwork,thealbumsherecordedlaterinthedecadewere
attackedbycriticsfortheircommercialism.FirstLightwona1972GrammyAwardandincludedpianists
HerbieHancockandRichardWyands,guitaristsEricGaleandGeorgeBenson,bassistRonCarter,
drummerJackDeJohnette,andpercussionistAirtoMoreira.[9]In1994,Hubbard,collaboratingwith
Chicagojazzvocalist/cowriterCatherineWhitney,hadlyricssettothemusicofFirstLight.[10]
In1977HubbardjoinedwithHerbieHancock,TonyWilliams,RonCarterandWayneShorter,membersof
themidsixtiesMilesDavisQuintet,foraseriesofperformances.Severalliverecordingsofthisgroupwere
releasedasVSOP,VSOP:TheQuintet,VSOP:TempestintheColosseum(all1977)andVSOP:LiveUnder
theSky(1979).[2]
Hubbard'strumpetplayingwasfeaturedonthetrack"Zanzibar",onthe1978
BillyJoelalbum52ndStreet(the1979GrammyAwardWinnerforBest
Album).ThetrackendswithafadeduringHubbard'sperformance.An
"unfaded"versionwasreleasedonthe2004BillyJoelboxsetMyLives.
Laterlife
Inthe1980sHubbardwasagainleadinghisownjazzgroupthistimewith
BillyChildsandLarryKlein,amongothers,asmembersattractingfavorable
reviews,playingatconcertsandfestivalsintheUSAandEurope,ofteninthe
companyofJoeHenderson,playingarepertoryofhardbopandmodaljazz
HubbardwithHarry
pieces.HubbardplayedattheMontereyJazzFestivalin1980andin1989
Abraham
(withBobbyHutcherson).HeplayedwithWoodyShaw,recordingwithhimin
1985,andtwoyearslaterrecordedStardustwithBennyGolson.In1988he
teameduponcemorewithBlakeyatanengagementintheNetherlands,fromwhichcameFeeltheWind.In
1988,HubbardplayedwithEltonJohn,contributingtrumpetandflugelhornandtrumpetsolosonthetrack
"MonaLisasandMadHatters(PartTwo)"forJohn'sRegStrikesBackalbum.In1990heappearedinJapan
headlininganAmericanJapaneseconcertpackagewhichalsofeaturedElvinJones,SonnyFortune,pianists
GeorgeDukeandBennyGreen,bassplayersRonCarter,andRufusReid,withjazzandvocalistSalena
Jones.HealsoperformedattheWarsawJazzFestival,atwhichLiveattheWarsawJazzFestival(Jazzmen
1992)wasrecorded.[2]
Followingalongsetbackofhealthproblemsandaseriouslipinjuryin1992whereherupturedhisupperlip
andsubsequentlydevelopedaninfection,Hubbardwasagainplayingandrecordingoccasionally,evenif
notatthehighlevelthathesetforhimselfduringhisearliercareer.[11]Hisbestrecordsrankedwiththe
finestinhisfield.[12]
Legacyandhonors
In2006,theNationalEndowmentfortheArtsaccordedHubbarditshighesthonorinjazz,theNEAJazz
MastersAward.[5]
OnDecember29,2008,HubbarddiedinShermanOaks,Californiafromcomplicationscausedbyaheart
attackhesufferedonNovember26.[13]
FreddieHubbardhadclosetiestotheJazzFoundationofAmericainhislateryears.Heisquotedassaying,
"WhenIhadcongestiveheartfailureandcouldn'twork,TheJazzFoundationpaidmymortgageforseveral
monthsandsavedmyhome!ThankGodforthosepeople."[14]TheJazzFoundationofAmerica's
Musicians'EmergencyFundtookcareofhimduringtimesofillness.Afterhisdeath,Hubbard'sestate
requestedthattaxdeductibledonationsbemadeinhisnametotheJazzFoundationofAmerica.[14]
