1 Background

In the early hours of 25 April, 2015 a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in Nepal, the biggest
earthquake in over 80 years. The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including a
magnitude 6.7 earthquake on 4 May 2015 which triggered many areas of the Nepal where towns and
villages have been cut off by the severe damage. In Kirtipur only 43 lives were lost with 3513
residential buildings completely broken down and 4157 buildings were partially damaged.
The historically, culturally and archeologically famous Kirtipur suffered huge human and economic loss.
Almost all temples, patis pauwas and other public buildings are at higher degree of risk in terms of its
serviceability and cultural values. People are worried about extinction of history, architecture and
civilization of Kirtipur. Hence Kirtipur Municipality as the responsible governmental organization it shall
take overall management of such assets in Kirtipur. Till date no major study in terms of technical
evaluation and social evaluation of our nearby public assets has been kept in priority by the
municipality hence early and timely planned maintenance is essential in order to preserve our
architecture and technology and to handover the culture, art and technology to the upcoming
engineers.
The recent earthquake most of the temples are demanding great degree of maintenance and repair
activities as these structures are the edge of its existence. Therefore the municipality should keep its
intention towards the reconstruction of the damaged temples through the sustainable, resilient and
planned manner.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this proposal is to assist municipality in providing the technical assistance in the
preparation of a detail study report of the reconstruction plan of historically, culturally and
archeologically important buildings structures, sites and places damaged due to the devastating
earthquake within Kirtipur Municipality.
Specifically, the objectives are

To record existing conditions of temples, durbars, gumbas and other public structures
systematically

To assess structural integrity of the temples for its safe use

To prepare detail architectural drawings of the temples, durbars gumbas etc

To provide design and drawings of the structural components that need to be repaired / replaced to
make the structure usable;

To prepare a detailed cost estimate for maintenance / repair / rehabilitation works;

Scope of Works:

Reconnaissance survey, Inspection and Recording

We will conduct reconnaissance survey of all the damaged cultural heritages, inventory data and other
related data if any.
Using the standard Inspection forms, complete the appropriate inspection report forms. The condition,
extent and urgency are noted in the form. Also identify the required maintenance items and record in
appropriate forms / sheets.

Conduct brief measurement of the damages

Brief measurement of the damages
Preparation of Detail Architectural Drawings
Existing architectural drawings of the temples and structures shall be prepared and all the nearby
features such as chowks, nearby building patterns, and any other features that has relevance in
undertaking maintenance / safety of the building.
Structure Condition Assessment and Evaluation
The existing conditions of the building shall be assessed in detail to identify any defects / damages in
the building. The building condition shall be evaluated to check its serviceability and safety conditions
for the existing and expected use.
Preparation of Reconstruction, Maintenance Design and Drawings
Based on the building condition assessment and evaluation report, all the building
elements/components/parts requiring maintenance/repair/replacement, design and drawings will be
prepared.
Preparation of Cost Estimate
A preliminary cost estimate of the building maintenance works will be prepared. The DUDBC norms
and specification will be used for the maintenance and repair works.
Preparation of Maintenance Plan
Based on the available budget the maintenance program/ plan will be prepared.
Photographs
Photographic recordings of all the damages on the structures are essential for the future record. As
such photographs of the damages will be taken.
